  • Claude Pierray, made in Paris in 1709. Beautiful antique instrument. Deep, dark, round tone. Finest of the early French makers, Claude Pierray was a contemporary of Jacques Boquay. Boquay's work was more highly priced during their lifetimes despite Pierray's superiority as a craftsman and his finer materials, but in general their instruments are similar in appearance. Pierray's output, which is sometimes taken for Italian, includes viols, violins and small cellos, and is especially admired by players.
Approximate value for this maker: €60,000
Music excerpt played in this video:
    Ysaye Sonata n4 "Allemande"
    Performed by Emil Lyutfali

Amazing sounding instrument. Especially in the lower register. Such growl! May I ask what is the G string?
