  • Claude Pierray, made in Paris in 1709. Beautiful antique instrument. Deep, dark, round tone. Finest of the early French makers, Claude Pierray was a contemporary of Jacques Boquay. Boquay's work was more highly priced during their lifetimes despite Pierray's superiority as a craftsman and his finer materials, but in general their instruments are similar in appearance. Pierray's output, which is sometimes taken for Italian, includes viols, violins and small cellos, and is especially admired by players.
    Approximate value for this maker: €60,000
    Music excerpts played in this video:
    Glazunov Violin Concerto 1st movement; Brahms Violin Concerto 1st movement Cadenza; Bach Chaconne.
    Performed by Emil Lyutfali.

    It has a very distinctive French tone inspite of the shape and arching like the old Italian violins

    What strings you using? How much does this affect the true sound of the violin ?

    • @thestigofviolin
      @thestigofviolin  2 месяца назад +1

      Good question, with no conclusive answer to date. More testing has to be done and I would certainly be interested in taking part and learning more about that myself! So far, my personal feeling is that different tensions and the actual “state” (old vs new) of the strings have more impact on the way an instrument performs than the choice of a brand. New sets will always perform better and sound brighter (after the “break-in” period) than older ones on any instrument. Having said that, it is also personal preference due to habits that each player develops with his/her favourite brand over the years and there may be a case for certain instruments combining better with one brand over another (remains to be seen).
      I will, however, use the same set of strings on all instruments in the future to avoid unnecessary doubts from viewers and to further improve the integrity of these tests. Thanks for bringing it up 👍

    May I ask how you setup the mic for recording with this clarity and rich ambiance sound?

    • @thestigofviolin
      @thestigofviolin  4 месяца назад

      I use a simple setup, hypemic for my iphone (at 3-4 feet distance) with built-in compression and no other effects. The room adds some echo (which doesn’t help), in fact I’m looking for a better studio for future tests. From my experience, the playing is what actually makes the biggest difference in the end. Finding the sound point, intonation (to get the overtones, that ring) and using as much of the bow hair as possible. Hope that helps!

      @@thestigofviolinSure. I have analyzed the sound track of your test and observed that the high-end register of the sound exhibits active vibrations, like those found in master instruments. There is no tangles throughout the entire plot. The lower register displays moderate vibrations, devoid of any aggressiveness or nasal quality, resulting in a delicately tender sound. Utilizing mathematical algorithms, I have compared your 1709 violin with renowned ones and discovered striking similarities to Davinci Gunari. If you are interested, I would share the plots with you.
