Good advice for any instrumentalist. I’m a saxophonist, and I once had a key cork fall off a day before a concert. That was a stressful day, but luckily I had a great rapport with my tech, so he squeezed me in last minute.

Another masterclass. It's great to see such experts in their field that are eager to share their knowledge while managing to stay humble and relatable.

I live in South Florida USA and its very hot and humid, I'm lucky I'm down the street from Fiddlershop. Humidity can run as high as 80% and temperatures can hover around 90 F. You can leave a hide glue instrument outside and almost see it come apart. Not a good place for an old wood instrument so people often use electrics.

How often should I get my instrument serviced?
And I would like to watch the "knocking check" video. Would you let me know which one it is?

Hey Olaf! Any chance, one of these days can you make a video with Ray Chen, if he is willing, or even the TwoSet guys and have them play your Olaf Grawert violin versus one of your Salvatore Lombardi violins, so we can hear the difference between a really high quality handmade Chinese "factory" instrument, versus a contemporary artisan crafted instrument.

Hi Olaf, hopefully you notice this comment. Not related to the video, I'd like to know if there's some kind of standard violin brand in orchestra? Or what is the best minimal budget for orchestra violin?
I used to play for 5 years in my church without proper teacher (I still can't even do proper vibrato). But recently, I've been trying to get back to PRACTICE myself and now that I know my violin is under 200$. I think I'd like to have some upgrade.
    Thank you!

There's no rules around that. Often a nicer instrument will have a more beautiful tone, look and feel better and is a whole lot easier to play (if it's well set up)
I would consider a budget of around US $700 to $2,000 for a much nicer forever violin.
I explain a bit about set up in some of my other videos.
Also take a look at my Piere Lomont video to get an idea about that nicer kind of violin 🎻

@@AskOlaftheViolinmaker Hi Olaf! Thank you so much for replying to my message so quickly! Yes, I have checked out your video about violin budgetting from beginner, intermediate, and to professional (that Pierre Lomont sounds beautiful). Unfortunately, most european made-violin were not really common here (I live in Indonesia 😅). Even if it does, the price is still a bit steep, included with custom tax and so on.
But still, after looking at your video, I think you gave me a general idea about what violin I'd look for. In here, Chinese manufacturer like Scott Cao and Samuel Eastman are amongst the best budget and better quality. My first choice was Scott Cao STV-017E (around 700$ USD) or Samuel Eastman VL-100 (430$ USD) , but I guess I'll hang on a bit for Scott Cao STV-600.
Thank you again Olaf for replying my message!

      Yes,
The Scott Cao instruments and Eastman can be nice when they've been well set up.
Definitely a very different economy in Indonesia and US$700 is a lot more expensive for you...
All the best for your violin journey

Great information, Olaf. Although I don't play, this is good
thinking in whatever you do. It can save a lot of time, money,
effort and damage. What can go wrong Will go wrong.
Maybe even something you thought impossible.
P.S.: I know you experiencing summer right now but the crickets
and other chirping things are just about as loud as your voice and
the frequency can, truly, be painful. 10 minutes after the end, my
ears are Still ringing and hurting,
I hope there is something you can do. 😁✌🖖

    Hello olaf,
I have a question. Will it make a difference if a violin uses a bone nut?
    Thanks!

    Olaf,
Things happen, but if you are a paid professional or even a gifted amateur,
and perform regularly, barring unforeseen accidents,
there is no excuse for not having your instrument in solid working condition.
I'm thinking of that violinist you just mentioned whose violin had all those open seams.
    Cheers,
    Rik Spector
