Stupid And Contagious Podcast
Великобритания
Добавлен 13 фев 2023
Welcome to The Stupid And Contagious podcast, a podcast focused on bringing you interviews with the bands that defined a generation!
That generation grew up in the 90s with the Grebo bands (Senseless Things, PWEI, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Mega City Four, The Wonderstuff and many more) on the UK side of the pond and quickly joined by the grunge bands (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and many more) on the US side of the pond.
We are not limiting ourselves to these genres though, we will chart the guitar bands from all genres throughout the decade that was the 1990s.

Lovely interview! Wish I had 1/4 of Joe and Chris' swagger and vigour!
Very cool interview I’m enjoying everything you guys are doing I’ve been playing catch up on the older videos & I’ve enjoyed every one 🤘
the Freebutt was a legendary venue, I moved to Brighton in 1998 and my first gig at The Freebutt was Leatherface around 2002 and a bit later on Brighton legends The Mutts. In it's original state. then got refubished, The Freebutt was closed around 2010? The Freebutt was essentially the place where bands came to cut the mustard as it were and did their Brighton debuts. Mogwai, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Explosions in the Sky, Caribou and Twilight Sad amogst others made their Brighton debuts there! I remember seeing Dead Meadow ( one of many times I went there to see bands) there about 2009 and was very loud. Some of us who were there say it was their drum Solo that broke the camel's back with the neighbors !
Did not know that’s where they got the name
🤘🏻
I was the guy who updated wikipedia when I noticed Mike Dirnt wearing a China Drum shirt in the 'When I come Around' video. Those were the shirts that were for sale at the Astoria Dookie gig I went to in '94....
Brilliant! Did you get the shirt?
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast Yes, bought one right after their set, been a fan since. Just bought their new album ... sounds good...It was interesting also that the third support on the night in 1994 was a local band (to me) called Joeyfat. The singer of Joeyfat used to work as a barman/staff at the Tunbridge Wells Forum in Kent. One of the early gigs set up by the team that went on to buy the Forum (opened in 1993 I believe) was Green Day. I wonder if inviting Joeyfat on the bill was one way of paying them back for their early support....
Webb Brothers was 2000!
shhhh
I’m really enjoying your channel I’ve just discovered your podcast it’s like a time capsule of my youth, Compulsion were awesome I remember seeing them live at the Newcastle Riverside in 1994 I believe with Possum Dixon as support they played a great set visceral & intense my favourite song is Yancy Dangerfields Delusion
So pleased you found us, tell all your friends! Compulsion were f*cking great!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcastI will spread the word for sure keep up the great work guys 👍

Milo is correct, i was at Reading 92 and Nirvana were definitely the worst of the three headliners.
Nooo! Shattering my teenage years!
@stupidandcontagiouspodcast they weren't bad, it's just that The Stuffies and Public Enemy were incredible.

Love your show !I think i asked if you could get The Smoking Popes on .. but maybe you're not familiar with them ?
I haven’t tbh but I’m looking at them now and will check them out. Don’t think they really reached this side of the pond but maybe I just missed them!? We’re they big stateside?
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast i've been banging on about them , perhaps it was just me and my mates who got into them after they were interviewed on radio London when they were touring the UK .. looks like they didn't have any hits stateside .. ah well they did a great album called "Destination Failure " and before that an EP called "Born to Quit "and according to Wiki,.... In October they began to tour with Morrissey, who said of their earlier album Born To Quit, "[it's] extraordinary, the most lovable thing I'd heard in years." No probs, I'll get me coat !! ... love your show, always great fun x
@@tonybolonixx And we love you! I'm going to do some digging, not a no, just an I don't know!
I'd guess the line about trying to have a father was maybe a dig at how he needed a strong role model and guidance but instead got more of a friend or maybe even a Dad that barely bothered with him. And if Courtney was to have a song written about her vagina, just covering Black Sabbaths Into The Void would have sufficed... lol sorry, not a fan of hers lol Great channel guys, enjoying it.
Thanks for tuning in and I think you’re right about the ‘Dad’ meaning. 🤘🏻
So many great moments on The Word, Terry getting slapped by the girl from Femme 2 Femme, Rod Hull attacking Snoop Dogg with Emu, Oliver Reed singing Wild Thing with Ned's playing the music for him, in terms of EMF they also appeared in '95 doing Perfect Day (not the Lou Reed song) and it was an awesome performance of it, the clip is on RUclips somewhere, the time where Alan Connor, the guy who done outside broadcasts, got held captive in a German swingers club by the gangsters that own it trying to extort him and the crew, all live lol What a legendary show, could go on all day, they need to release a complete box set of all the series for us to buy and relive.
Amazing show! Essential viewing back in the day! 🤘🏻

I chose tunes that were more personal memories of 90's summers gone by for me. The people i hung out with and the experiences i had, even some gigs I went to! There were so many tunes that soundtracked our summers and alot we've forgotten too!
Give us some examples! 🤘🏻
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast Examples of other tracks? or Memories conected to certain tracks? :)
@@mattjammy9884 Both!
Some of the summers of the 1990s were hazey the later the decade got on, Tho my favourite summers from that Decade were from 1990 - 1993 hands down despite 1992 being a wash out at Reading Tho that summer had a memorable Sountrack. That part of the 1990s so much happened and to make a soundtrack for those summers I'd be here all year lol! It was my coming of age, experiencing lots of stuff for the first time, for example my first gig in 1990 when I 15 and then my first Reading Festival in 1991 at 16 ( bought ticket as a result of selling two paintings i sold to my friends neighbours over a hedge in the village I grew up) A couple of memories strike me currently, I remember being in the last year at secondary school the summer of 1990, was a hot day and I was in a maths lesson in one the huts we had there. I heard A track that totally took hold of me. at that moment teacher had to go somewhere. i sneaked out to find out what the song was....went to a workers van outside and put my head in the drawn down window, the music was coming out of the stereo in the van .....It was the first time I heard The Only One I Know. Same with There She Goes by The La's. I used to do a milk round all round the Chiltern area including Whipsnade area before going to school, We had a radio of sorts in our little Honda mini Tipper.....our milk waggon lol. For a while everytime we got the radio on The La's would be playing.
I was big into De La Soul, Dream Warriors, Gangstar and of course, Public Enemy.
NIce! Really early 90s Hip Hop then?
East coast for me.

Dave is in Midsomer Murders. The Lemonheads It’s a Shame About Ray was a massive summer record for me.
MIdsummer Murders, that's it! That's his vibe! Shame About Ray, what an album!
Nobody mentioned massive attack, big summer vibes for me.
Oooh good one, of course! 🤘🏻
The verve Lucky man was dropped by the DJ at cafe del mar as the sun went down in Ibiza.
Oooh, nice! 🤘🏻🌅
Terrible shame to see Luke relishing in the extreme violence of the left! 😢
Don’t think he was relishing and also don’t think it was the left, let’s just leave it at that, political conversations rarely end well 🤘🏻
Neil - It's pronounced Cicciolina ;-)
😂
I never did get it right!
'Summer' - Buffalo Tom 'Summer's gone a summer song, you wasted every day' I see Luke mentioned Elephant 6 collective, does he agree with me and a lot of nerds and a lot of people that Neutral Milk Hotel's 'In the Aeroplane over the Sea' is the greatest album of all time??
I will ask him and get back to you!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast im sure he knows all about it!! lol! it's a glorious weird psychedelic folk album that came out in 97 and slowly became a massive cult internet hit over the years.
Let us know your favourite 90s summer jams! 🤟🏻
1990 was more or less obliterated for me with Ecstasy and dance music.
Sounds like you had a most excellent 1990!
Im with you Neil, Cast were waaaaay better than the La’s

Love Eight Legged and Hup, and also like the Cow song. Great interview.
The cow song! 😂 Thanks so much for tuning in, glad you enjoyed it!

Really surprised to see Jeremy uses an iphone! Great interview. What an inspirational chap! Blown away he made that doc with zero experience! I bought it when it came out on DVD and rewatched it last week. Absolutely loved S*M*A*S*H, but then I was 28 by the end of 94 and I spose S*M*A*S*H had that added depth!
Love that he went and just did it! Have you heard Ed Borrie's recent stuff? Still kicks balls!
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast no, will check it out. Is it just under his own name?
@@4th_Lensman_of_the_apocalypse It is!
Lukes a feminist and a Nirvana fan right. Kurt lost his virginity by taking advantage of a girl with learning difficulties (that means r ped lets face it). Not very pro feminist right….😢 I always did think it was a case of he doth protest too much. Imagine the faux outrage by Nirvana fans had this been about Axl!
I saw Nirvana twice and left both times. They were absolutely appalling live so I'll have to agree with Miles. The only gig worse was a pissed up Shane MacGowan and the Popes! I loved the interview, I dig the podcast! See if you can get David Gedge on!
We are working on David Gedge! Another vote for Nirvana being crap live, that’s interesting? I never got the chance to see them live unfortunately but always assumed they killed it live?

Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it
Ruddy legend
Agreed 🤘🏻
Morgan’s bass playing is pretty special anyone who steps into Jon Entwistle’s shoes is top tier.
Very true!
I never really liked the Wonder stuff much, I think it must be that Waterboys influence that Miles mentions several times. 😂 Never saw them live. Groove Machine was OK but it's all a bit 'meh' to me. Acoustic guitar and violins was not my bag at the time, so they lost me quite early on.
That’s fair enough, to each their own! The beauty of music 🤘🏻
Was really looking forward to this episode and it didn't dissapoint, Awesome interview and very interesting, I think Miles has grown older gracefully these days, to me their best work is still the first two albums. Last time I saw Miles was the Love from Stourbridge part two gig in 2019 when he opened up the preceedings for Poppies and Ned's with a solo accoustic set of Stuffies classics and it was amazing to be fair....Well done guys again! keep up the good work!
He’s a legend for sure much like yourself! 🤘🏻
That was great..I’d forgotten about The Wonder Stuff. One of those that goes under the radar. We used to watch the Channel 4 chart show and it would show the indie chart and that’s where I discovered them. Miles always did a really good version of The Jams “That’s Entertainment “ and good to see him on here, looking well and smoking . There was another quintessential British band around the same time called “Boys Wonder” ( check out the track “Goodbye Jimmy Dean”. ) long time ago.. I would like to see ya catch up with “The 60ft Dolls “ band we used to go and see in the midd 90s. The best times.. Funny how you doing these interviews breaks into the memory bank. Excellent stuff.
60ft Dolls is on the list! We all love a bit of 90s nostalgia 🤘🏻
Couldn’t wait to watch this! Wonder stuff started my musical journey. Proud it was my first gig in Poole for the construction tour. Couple of years ago I saw miles solo at shiine. I was lucky to have a chat with him afterwards. I had seen him outside and he was a gent. I however reverted to a starstruck 14 year old! Great interview thanks so much!!
We were a bit starstruck too tbh, we usually are! Thans for watching dude!
Someone's butthurt that something better came along and did for his career, lol. WS were crap and deserved being thrown into the (Ned's Atomic) dustbin of musical history.
Bit harsh? I like the dustbin joke though, my sort of humour
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast What he said about "grunge" was harsh. But his motivations are clear, so...
@@RunOfTheHind True, It's all subjective. I loved grunge and still do, it'd be boring if we all liked the same thing

Great interview really enjoyed it
Glad ypou enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
I can remember 89,90 going to hmv or virgin records in Leeds and loads of stone roses or depeche mode t shirts on sale and other bands
That was probably the heyday of Ts up untill late 90s?
The difference with the t-shirt thing was they existed before but they weren't the massive fashion statement they became. It's true that punks wore t-shirts, but they also wore button shirts, DIY zip, shirts with ties and all that stuff too. People also did wear Smiths shirts but many smiths fans were more into emulating the clothes that Morrisey would wear. The difference with the t-shirt bands is that they wore each others shirts, the bands themselves made wearing band shirts popular. The fans dressed like the bands, which made the demand for the shirts a lot larger, ..... Beatles fans wore suits, like the Beatles.... that's why didn't sell hundreds of shirts at gigs, it wasn't the fashion.
That just put a funny image in my head of The Beatles on stage.... George wearing a long sleeve Kinks shirt, Ringo bashing away with his Who t-shirt on. 😂
It's also not that long ago that t-shirts were still regarded as underwear or extremely scruffy .... My Dad is only 22 years older than me and he never went out of the house without a collared shirt on, he grew up in the 60's and unless you were a biker or a pretty rebellious type of some kind.. you wore a 'proper' shirt.
That's a good explanantion. The 'T Shirt bnads' made it part of their identity, like you say wearing other bands Ts
🤟🏻
Also true, we've become scruffy bastards!
