- It's episode 47 and we are chatting to Jason Applin from 90s Indie Rockers Bennet! They had a huge hit with 'Mum's Gone To Iceland' but not only that Jason has some great stories & a revelation near the end that will blow your minds!
Welcome to The Stupid And Contagious podcast, a podcast focused on bringing you interviews with the bands that defined a generation!
That generation grew up in the 90s with the Grebo bands (Senseless Things, PWEI, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Mega City Four, The Wonderstuff and many more) on the UK side of the pond and quickly joined by the grunge bands (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and many more) on the US side of the pond.
We are not limiting ourselves to these genres though, we will chart the guitar bands from all genres throughout the decade that was the 1990s.
If you are into 1990s guitar music or just a music lover in general then this is the podcast for you!

COMMENT BELOW your favourite Bennet tracks or if you saw them live? 🤘🏻
Thank you for having me. I'm sorry I rambled on so much.
Don't be silly, we loved having you on! There you go, apologising again!🤣
Another Fun n Lovely Interview, Jason is so down to earth. Never caught Bennet live and will have to check out their gig with Miget in Brighton!
That will be a good one, I'm going to try to get along to it too!
I had totally forgotten this band but when I went and listened to the songs on YT I remembered them all! ... such a weird feeling, a bit like having Déjà vu because I didn't think I'd heard them before but they were so familiar. I may have seen them supporting Echobelly, but honestly, I don't know. Maybe I just remember hearing the songs in indie clubs?
Love that you’ve rediscovered them through this, that’s our aim 🤘🏻
Great fun show Guys, thanks .I'll be checking out Bennet.I saw Radiohead in 94 and they wouldn't play "Creep" On the subject on inverse car size, Syd Barrett had a bike !And, I'm going to see Smoking Popes next month, they're on a rare UK visit .Dunno, if you were into them , they're one of my all time faves and i'd love it if you got them on the show x
Smoking Popes? Love the name, I’m sure Luke will be aware of them but I’ll check them out for sure! Yeah, Radiohead not playing Creep is just annoying surely
@@stupidandcontagiouspodcast they started as a hardcore band ( brand new haircut) and later did an EP " Born to quit" and the album "Destination Failure" ..some beautiful poetry on there, heartbreaking and funny( Let's hear it for Love) ..opening line on "Megan". .I'm butter on a summer's day ,when she's around" and " Pretty Pathetic" is poingnant and has a funny twist at the end! Yeah, the Destination Failure LP is one of my 90's faves..I came across them when they were interviewed by Rob Elms ,on Radio London mid90's x
I saw Lou Reed once and he didn't play anything that anyone (or lets say 95% of the audience) knew, just a load a experimental stuff that he was doing at the time that sounded like it was fully improvised on the night. It was pretty interesting but I think everyone wanted to hear 'walk on the wild side' or 'perfect day' or .some velvets ... or something that was familiar at least
You’ve got to give the paying punters some of what they want 🤘🏻
I’d heard the Bros thing before just assumed it was bullshit, what a great story. I saw bennet at the Southampton joiners back in the day, someone always gets there first was a great tune.
It's a great story right? LOVE The Joiners!
