How can I purchase a Hermes typewriter?

Great video! I was gifted one of these cool typewriters last year but recently the tension string ripped in two and now it does not advance. Do you know of any videos that show how to do that? I googled it, and there are a few that show how to do it but not on this model. Any help would be greatly appreciated.thank you!

What a great video. I'm really happy to say I own 9 of your top 10. Your insights are spot on. The only one on that list that I don't own in my collection is the Smith Corona. Before I owned one, I really thought the Hermes 3000 was way overpriced and had a touch of the "emperors new cloths" about it. I picked one up for a reasonable price a few months ago. After a good cleaning and set up I now have to confess it lives up the hype. There are two typewriters that I also own and regularly use that I would add to the list. There are the Erika Mod 12, which is my personal number 2 and the Blue Bird Deluxe which is a "snappy" semi portable. Oh and as much as I love all of my machines if I had to choose one "desert island" machine that would meet all of my needs (comfort, reliability, feel, aesthetics and portability) then I would probably go with my humble powder blue Brother De Luxe. The problem is my teenage daughter seems to have permanently "adopted it" :) Great video. Keep up the good work x

Hi, I have just bought the model T and replaced the ribbon. The text is only marking the top part of the letters. Could you identify the problem.

How practical are these to actually type on? Would it make sense to actually get one to travel with and use?

Late to the party. I'll list my favorites according to two categories: 1. My personal, perhaps idiosyncratic tastes 2. My attempt at an objective, emotionless appraisal (NOTE: This list pulls exclusively from the typewriters I own) My personal favorites: 1. Groma Modell T (N) - Harder to find, esp. good condition, but a truly unique machine that makes typing feel like the keys are an organic extension of your arms and fingers. Also the most beautiful machine in my opinion. Damn, those curves! 2. Alpina - Somewhere between an Erika and an Olympia, a nice blend of smoothness and snappiness. Oddly shaped, esp. the ribbon cover, but the light shade of crinkled green is pleasing and calming to the eye. No touch selector, but I've never felt like I needed one when typing on the Alpina. Once you put keys to fingers, you get lost in the page. 3. Erika M - Erikas are generally extremely smooth operators. Maybe not as snappy as the Olympias, but I'd say a more elegant experience. You could say the Olympias punch while the Erikas glide. As demonstrated by my love of Gromas, I have a soft spot for East German machines. Perhaps the West Germans were better mechanics and engineers, but the East Germans were on a quest for functional beauty. Their machines were truly unique, an aesthetic alternative to the mass-manufactured West Germans. An attempt at objective, emotionless appraisal: 1. Olympia SM 9. Undoubtedly, one of the greatest machines ever made. No fuss. No flare. Simple. Functional. Robust. Easy to find. If you're a practical mind and don't like fussiness or bullshit, get an SM 9. 2. Olympia SM 3-4. All the qualities of the SM 9, minus the basket shift. I personally like the look of the 3 and 4 more. Make sure to find one with a soft or new platen. Also, the washers on the carriage get squished over time. Be sure to find one that's been serviced, where the washers have been replaced. 3. Erika 9 Yes, I have a soft spot for Erikas and the East Germans, but they are objectively some of the best typers out there. The 9 is a no-fuss model and represents the pinnacle of the brand. Popular earlier models like the 5 are harder to find in good condition, and later models were made with cheaper materials. I've heard the 10 is also mighty fine, but I don't own one.

I don't have a favorite. I write by hand and then enter the text of my books into the computer for formatting and uploading. That written, I have been thinking of a typewriter as a way to get typed text without staring at a computer screen. Therefore, your list is very helpful. Thank you.

I'd love to see a video about the best desktop standards. I've got a Royal 10 KHM, KMM, HH. 30s L.C. Smith Superspeed, Remington 17.. I have so many of the "greatest" portables, SM 123s 5 series SCs, Olivetti 22 and 32, studio 44, and I still strongly prefer he desktops when space and weight aren't factors. Seems like they get no love. Tbh my Royal HH might be my favorite, and I got it for $15 bucks.. it's so ugly, but god you can fly on it.

Hi! I think considering the time we live in, when judging the typewriters, you should include how they stand on their ability to install usbtypewriter conversion kit.I have an Olivetti with round keys, M44, and although beautiful, since it's not supported by usbtypewriter conversion kit, its practical value in my eyes just plumetted!😢 What's your opinnion on that kit? You can google it to find all about it.

I have a brother deluxe 220 but there isn’t a tension adjustment on the left- am I missing it or could mine just not have one?

I am thankful for your video. A family member just gave me her Olympia Monica but I don't know what SM number it is. How can one tell? there is a numeric code on the underside of 439393971 and it was purchases in the late 1970's

As this video went along, I did a search and tabbed them in my browser. I've got an Underwood Champion (circa 1949) and it feels well built, but I am not "happy" with it. My Smith Corona Electra 120 types much nicer, but it is also electric and I do not always want to plug in to type. I really like the way round keys look, so hopefully I can find a portable older typewriter that doesn't kill my bank account since I am just a hobbyist, and mainly type letters, to-do lists, and notes for family and friends for fun. Good video, I am off to go over all the tabs I have open :) ..

Months ago, I watched this exact video and watched eBay warily (for a time) for an Olivetti suitable for my first typewriting experience. Last weekend, I scored an early Lettera 22 with the unnamed typeface, and fixed it up on my own. Works like an absolute charm! The letters warmly welcome heavy fingers.

I've had a crush on the Graphika for years. If I could keep (or afford) just one manual typewriter alone, it would be the Cassandre-type Graphika. What a gorgeous output, and capacity for expression. If you Google around a bit, you can quickly find that some folks have digitized both the Reiner and Cassandre types as fonts you can install on your PC. Small consolation for not being able to play with the machine, but a consolation.
