Complete Guide To Buying A Home Gym Power Rack Part 2
Name suggestion - YAQ pronounced like the animal (yack) - Y'all answer questions
THANK YOU for your pinned comment!!!
Guy is wrong about 2x2 racks. My 11 gauge is rated at 1000lbs. Lots of 2x2 accessories available now. Fits my space and will last forever. I also use a 35lb training bar because it's shorter and fits my space. Most people won't need a 3x3 rack or the several hundred dollar bars. I have 700 lbs of old Marcy grip weight plates that after decades of collecting I have powder coated black just so I don't have to paint every couple years. My PR didn't go up because they are prettier though. I would recommend a functional trainer even if it's plate loaded like mine. Your body won't get stronger because you paid a premium. It gets stronger because you consistently train.
@@fs3994 Glad you found something that works for you! And that consistency point is spot on. Crazy how much of a difference that makes!
How about YAQ for these? Y'all answer questions - pronounced like Yack the animal
great info! thanks! once set up, where to get music to play? spotify or other? been trying to figure out. thanks
@@mary5292 I use Spotify, but any music service works.
@@mary5292 I use Spotify, but any streaming service will work. Then just an adapter cable from your phone or ipad to your stereo
Love the vid, bar looks great. Where’s that C10 video though? lol (telling me it was coming was a massive mistake)
@@RichInDaGarage I want to release it too! Gonna wait until it's in stock and people can actually buy one. Prob another 2 weeks.
My tricks for #3, to combat the desire to buy more fancy gear. - plan where it'll physical go in my (limited) basement space. If I start to feel too crowded, I'll enjoy the space less. - remember how annoyed I'll be if I spend the money and then never use the thing, which has become a piece of stress that I chose to buy and bring into my life. - envision how I won't want to roll it out, set it up, clip in attachments, etc. Extra friction pretty rapidly turns into disuse. - picture the movements I'd do with the gear. What exercises are new on this? Can I replicate that with existing gear (and feel clever at my resourcefulness)? I'll search for "movement X alternatives" to find the dumbbell/resistance band/etc version that's just as effective and maybe even more enjoyable. certainly easy enough to try before I buy... - I do want a lean and minimalist routine and capability for when I travel. Everywhere has dumbbells‚ I want know the core lifts with good form so I can do them anywhere without extra thought. I want an effective resistance workout with just bands. There's some pleasure in running lean and being lean! rawr!
@@cotton10001 Wow, really awesome advice across the board! Love it!
I remember my first setup. I was 12, but looking back it was awful. A 110 lb. set of DP plastic weights, I loved those plates back then, a 1 inch aluminum barbell with a black sleeve to hold the weights at a certain spot, and an aluminum DP adjustable bench with a brown pad. Yeah, it was considered an adjustable bench although the flat position was the only one that worked. I outgrew those weights at 13 and Dad just bought us extra solid iron plates because the plastic plates only came in a set and he was not buying us another whole set until we got strong enough to lift two whole sets. I used that setup all through junior high, until I turned 15 then started lifting at s friends basement. Back then nobody was gonna put a gym inside their garage. The garage was for cars or tools, things sure have changed.
They sure have! My Sears bench was crammed into my bedroom. Sound like a very similar setup.
@@GymCrafterHad mine down Mom and Dads basement which was actually a very nice setup. 500 sqft, 8 ft. Ceilings, HVAC down there too. Honestly I think the stuff we had was the best available back then. I still have the bench & plastic weights, gave them to nephew which he never used but my sister still has them, they are hers now Take Care
cant wait for full video!
Prob 2 weeks or so.
The Bells of Steel Bare Naked power bar was my first "good" barbell. BOS makes great budget bars.
Yeah, they make some great price conscious stuff that's not "cheap".
People I train really like these immediately after a set of flys
That's a solid combo!
What rack did you order?
Iron Bull Strength is sending me a rack. Not a new company, but new to making racks. Built in their own factory in Canada, so not an import and looks pretty solid from what I've seen. They are also offering a lot of custom options on their gear which is different than a lot of other companies. The new rack is going to match the walls in the gym! Can't wait to get it in, but importing from Canada takes forever!
Is there another rack similar to this you recommend? Was going to purchase this but how the smith bar wasn’t sturdy at all with weight on it, I think I’ll pass on this. & thanks for the in depth review of this
They threatened me with a lawyer if I posted the final review of this. The Smith machine basically fell apart. Take the amount of play you see in this video and 10x it after just four months of use. Really terrible piece of gear. I'd look at the Force USA G3. If you have to be at the lower price point, the RitFit M1 v2 is prob the most acceptable of the budget priced stuff I've tried.
@ tell them to come onnn with it. Thanks though, will take a better look at the g3.
Appreciate the in depth first look at our bar! We hope it serves you well for the next few months of testing! 💪💪
Always really cool to see you guys actively engage with and listen to community feedback. Recently bought a deadlift Jack with rollers from you guys and I love it!
It's doing great so far!
This Hydra bar looks really Cool to me but Bare Steel won't work down here in NC It would rust badly in our humidity and the weird Rainbow finish is not for me. BOS, from what I've seen does not do colors well. I always think of just plain black equipment when I think of them, maybe that's just me but I feel they need to up their color options to compete with REP but maybe they're not trying to compete with REP and they just want to take Titan's customers, who knows Take Care
Yup, one of their weaknesses is the quality of some of their finishes, especially Cerakote. I like what Kaevon and Bells is doing, though. You are right, they aren't trying to be Rep or Rogue. They are trying to make unique stuff (Kaevon is like a mad garage gym scientist) and do it at reasonable prices. I think the comparison to Titan is fair, but the big difference for me is the people. Bells is a company full of solid people that you can talk to and who are clearly invested in the garage gym community. Titan is a big corporation and honestly kind of cold and faceless. Nothing wrong with that, but I enjoy working with Bells a lot more. That said, Titan's quality has gone through the roof (along with their prices), so I think they are leaving an opening in the market that Bells can step right into.
Tim, I'm sure you are familiar with the Badlands barbell from REP. I'm curious how it compares to the Black Diamond. Looks like the same bar other than the finishes and frankly I prefer the sleeve finish of the Badlands bar over REP's Duracoat. I can't like a sleeve finish that will look very used after the first time I lift with it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on which one to buy as I'm in the market for a New Powerbar. Thnkx Take Care
I have one in the garage! Unboxing will hit at some point. Badlands bar is the same knurl as the double black diamond. If you want the black diamond knurl in the different finish, the only other bar they make with that knurl is the Alpine bar. There's a great comparison from Rep you can see here: instagram.com/p/DAl69_6ylW1/?igsh=ajd2cm93b2M2NGs2&img_index=4
Really cool bar. But since it's manufactured in red China, hard pass.
Not defending Chinese manufacturing but where was the device you used to comment made?
I don't feel the same as I type this response on my MacBook Pro and check my email on an iPhone, but totally respect sticking to your convictions. Has to be hard to live in this country right now and eliminate buying anything made in China (or maybe not hard, but certainly more expensive!)
I wonder if the colors effect how the knurling feels.
It for sure would. Any coating will. I'm guessing it's Cerakote and that's one thing Bells isn't great at, so it would for sure dull the knurl. After having this and using it more, the knurl on the bare steel is really good for powerlifting training.
You don't need barbells - belt squat and hammer strength press only
Awesome that you've found something that works for you! Terrible advice for other people, though.
seems awesome to have all the knurling cues for keeping everything centered. also agree about the color not being attractive haha but could see it being useful for just having some quick additional placement cues. nice review!
Thanks! It's working out great so far. I think the colored option is cool, I just didn't like the actual colors.
Barbell videos? Sign me up!
Me too! My wallet doesn't agree, but who's listening, right?😅
smith was/is good for when i'm injured or sore or tired but want to lift. i prefer everything else but it's nice to have as a backup IMO plus i enjoy using it for leg press since i don't have room
Lots of feedback on this one! I'm recording a dedicated Smith machine episode soon.
Are the Rep 5200 2.0 and Blackwing slippery on hardwood? I had a Fb-5000 and it was super slippery on hardwood, but my Rogue utility bench and AB2 sticks in place on the hardwood
I honestly don't know. I've always had rubber flooring in my gyms for exactly this reason. I have an FB5000 and it weighs a lot less, but I couldn't tell you honestly how it would compare on that type of floor.
I see a Mini Leg Press in the back (sled press), are you making a review on it?
That's the Force USA compact leg press/hack squat and I love it! I did a video on it already that I posted a week or two ago when I was at their HQ. I will be posting another with more detail soon. I also used a similar one today from Body Solid that has a higher weight capacity, but no conversion to hack squat which was really good too. If you have any questions, let me know, I'm happy to answer them!
@GymCrafter thanks for the reply, I just watched the video! I am about to order a leg sled and Im between the Force USA compact leg press and thr ATX compact leg press 3.0 (I live in Europe). The build quality of the ATX looks better with the new roller design (Samsfitness has a good review on it!) while the Force USA can be adjusted into a hack squat and they are priced the same, tough one!
@@IlirKasa For what it's worth, if ATX was in the US, I'd own a ton of their stuff! I saw them at Home Gym Con and every single piece was sooooo good! If you don't need the hack squat function (and if there's a big enough foot plate on the ATX to move your feet forward to focus on quads, you may not need it), I'd probably go with the ATX. I haven't used this ATX piece, but wow was all their stuff good!
Funny, I went to full body training in my 40's. I keep it simple. Monday, Wednesday and Friday = squat, dead lift, bench, t-bar row. The run three miles on Tuesday, Sat and Sunday. Works great for me.
Sounds like a solid routine! Clean, simple, effective.
Funny, for years I've been telling myself "today some crappy stuff will happen". Yeah, it helps when the crappy stuff happens.
It's weird, but it works!
Dang I didn't know they were in Draper
Beautiful area. I'm from Colorado. Made me miss the mountains.
@GymCrafter Yeah, the mountains here are gorgeous. Also, I have been lucky enough to pick up American barbells training bar and safety squat bar on the used market. They really do make great bars.
Funny thing is, I find my back extension attachment for my Ironmaster bench is one of the best purchases I have made. But this setup would seem to work for anybody. Thanks for the tip.
Having something for this move is a game changer. I do this movement at least 2 days a week. I've got a Nordic Hyper Pro on the way and am really looking forward to having a proper back extension in the gym as I've never owned one before!
My only cerakote barbell is a blue Texas Deadlift Bar, so it is used on a dedicated deadlift platform, so no chance of banging into the rack or anything else. All other barbells (not counting specialty) are stainless.
Good call!
Don’t trash other channels, poor form. Garage gym reviews has done so much for this community. And they have an entire team to eval stuff. Overall good review though, thanks.
This is very very helpful, thank you for doing this. I ran into a problem that you don’t mention here and it is simply not addressed in the Major Fitness manual or video. In Step 2, the rear pillar tube (part C) has a definite front and back. It is not indicated anywhere that the larger holes in the tube MUST be facing the rear, smaller holes in the front. You won’t realize this mistake until Step 14 when you try to install part Y, load bearing tubes. Fortunately, I took your advice and did not tighten down the bolts, but it was still a major annoyance to correct.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw this on SportsCenter. They said look it’s Shaq with his new girlfriend.
Shhhh, don't tell Shaq I stole his girlfriend!
Very true also one arm standing dumbell one at a time also you can lift one leg while standing and rest it on a dumbell rack to take off back pressure.
Awesome tip! I love using a kettlebell for that too, there's something about how the weight sits below your hand that's good for the shoulders
my 5 reasons. 5. krispy creme delivers. 4. so does pizza hut. 3. cant miss oprah. 2. diary queen is just around the corner. and the number one reason im not getting results. i dont have any equipment... paul shaffer take it away
Love it! I miss when Late Night was actually funny, great reference for the old guys!
how does the Amstaff Fitness machines compare to Force USA?
Never heard of Amstaff, so can't say for sure, but this is what I am comfortable saying... Amstaff doesn't have a website that I could find. Huge red flag. Only sold on Amazon and one fitness dealer, another huge red flag. They racks are identical to ones you see on alibaba, a third red flag. I would be wary of them for several reasons, not the least of which is lack of customer service. Who do you contact with a problem? Warranty issue? Lots of companies out there drop shipping from alibaba with their own name on stuff and I'd stay away from all of it. Force USA designs their own stuff and have been doing all in ones longer than any other company. Based in Utah with awesome warranties and real people you can call if there's a problem.
I am actually prepping for my double black diamond review now
That's cool! I'm looking forward to it as we train so differently. I'm guessing you''ll like it more than I did (not that I didn't like it, but I'm just a huge fan of how AB does aggressive vs. this sharp stuff). What color did you get?
In 2024 things have changed. I'm between the Titan X3 and the Rep PR4000. Both I'm purchasing the latpull down attachment. Both similar size and attachments. Theres only a $155 difference because Titan's pricing went way up the last few years. I think with the $155 difference I think I'm going with Rep.
for sure they have! Easy choice now, you'll love the Rep.
As far as asking people to like, comment, and subscribe... You're more likely to get people to engage if you ask them to then if you don't. Most people are not going to fault you for asking if you're being genuine and not beating them over the head with it since they realize it's part of a content creators job to at least ask. A good example intro would be like "this percent of you are subscribed, it helps out the channel if more of you are subscribed and lets us reach more people so if you're not please consider it." As it both gives people a call to action (subscribe) and shows them the progress of the channel with the subscribe percentage (in theory) getting higher over time and encourages regulars that are not subscribed to help you get that percent higher.
Good points and I think there is a middle ground. I like how Nerdrotic does it, which is a lot like how you describe. CTAs are a necessary evil for sure. I just don't like sounding like a "RUclipsr" more than anything else.
I'd never put anything over my head in this manner, though
Why?
I appreciate you and your channel Tim, but you'll pry my push, pull, legs split from my cold dead hands. 🙃 I'm not saying you're wrong, I just like my current regimen to the point where it would be difficult for me to be as consistent if I switch things up that much. Couldn't agree more with what you said about time frames. In the last 2 years I've lost 40 pounds, and doubled most of my lifts. Getting enough sleep has been vital. Can't recommend it enough. 😴
😂I feel you! I work a split myself and wouldn't trade it. If you can be consistent, they work great. I've just found most people aren't and full body works better for them. Awesome results, btw!
@@GymCrafter Thanks!
BTW, Arnold and the guys had cables at Golds gym in Pumping Iron. They had a cable crossover machine, a cable row machine, and a lat pulldown machine and they used them a lot, just saying. Love your advice for most people but let me play devil's advocate and then I'd like you to give me your opinion on what I say. Full body workouts are good for beginners and old people who are just trying to stay fit but for intermediate and advanced lifters full body programs fall short. The volume is so low for each body part per workout that advanced or even intermediate lifters cannot make the gains that they can make on a split routine. A full body workout means you're only doing 3 sets for each body part at the most because there are so many body parts. You also cannot go anywhere close to failure on any sets or you wont be able to get through the 8 or 9 bodyparts. That is my thoughts against full body for mid or high level lifters. Do you agree with my thinking or do you think I'm wrong??? Take Care
Correct, but that was all accessory work. They did the brunt of their lifting with the bar and dumbbells. And I have trained a lot of intermediate lifters who get better results 3x a week full body than trying to do a split just because they can't stick to a split. Keep in mind, I was talking about people not being able to train 6 days, or skipping entire body parts because they miss a workout. For busy people with lives outside the gym, a split is a really hard thing to be consistent with. That said, I train 6-7 days a week and have been training a split for a long time now. I shift to full body if my schedule gets nuts or I go on vacation. I would say part of what makes and "advanced" lifter is the discipline to not skip and to be in the gym 4-6 days consistently, so splits work well for them.
Also in Arnold’s day they were puking in the gym.
@@apuz13 Ah! Maybe that's why I'm not all swole like they were! 😂 Yeah, Arnold and CrossFit can keep their puke buckets for sure!
@ 🤣
@@GymCrafter Okay, I see now, agree with everything you said. I don't know the effectiveness of full body as me or my boys never did it so I am curious about it and needed some teaching and you taught me. Very Nice Job!!!!
Tim, got the ultimate answer for sticking to your diet and it works if you can do it. Sadly, I never could do it so it never helped me but it really, really works. Ready, here goes, the answer is Find a partner, find someone who is trying to lose fat also, they don't even need to be on the same plan or program, as humans we just need someone who will keep us in line and two people on the same journey will increase the odds of success by 50%. BTW, I say losing fat instead of losing weight because I want to keep all my weight except the fat. People hire coaches and trainers to keep them in line but that does not compare to having a person going through the same torture that a diet becomes. Interestingly, I've found the longer you stick to your diet the easier it is. Your taste buds actually change to where a piece of grilled chicken can be as tasty as a filet mignon after a while. A bad truth is it's hard to find a partner as most people don't want a partner because they don't want someone to keep them in line and they usually fail. Good luck with your fat loss program!!!!!
For sure! Accountability partners work really well!
No review?
You have good timing! I just shot it this week. As soon as it's edited, it will get scheduled to post. Short version is... Don't use over about 5-600 lbs on it and don't buy it if you are over 6' tall. Calf raises aren't great either. Outside of that, it's not bad, especially for the size.
@@GymCrafter i was curious because the deal they are running sounds too good to be true. Thanks for the response!
One of the things I have learned over the last 10+ of garage lifting is that efficiency is key. A big complicated machine of “gym hack” may be a great idea, but the longer it takes to set up and take down, the less you will use it.
I couldn't agree more! It's why I hated even a small setup like a plate loaded cable machine. I look at some of this stuff coming out and just know it would sit in a corner unused just because I didn't want to set it up.
This sounds like the making of the next podcast. Maybe showcase some great ideas that take too long to execute vs basic ideas that could be replacements
About soliciting, You said it Perfectly, No on could have or has said it better You just gained Cool with all your viewers and I never remember to hit the like button but I will hit it always on your videos because you don't beg me to. All other channels should follow your lead!!
I moved from strict press to this landmine press to help build a better base and full range of motion. I've had shoulder mobility issues, and so I feel better doing this for now. I also incorporate resistance band training to work on different shoulder planes of movement.
Gotta do everything we can to keep those shoulders healthy! It's one of the first joints people have problems with and it's kind of important that it works well!
The modern approach to training is going lighter in compromised positions. There is no inherently dangerous movement as long as you load responsibly and use good and stable form.
While in theory you are 1000% right, I realized a long time ago that adding the caveat of "as long as you use perfect form" is not good training advice. If I am training someone and I can use an exercise that forces proper form instead of relying on them to do it themselves, I'm picking the former every single time. Not to mention, everyone training at home who have never used a trainer probably couldn't identify perfect form if they had to. When I work with people who have never been shown how to lift safely (even those who have watched countless hours of RUclips), they are virtually never using even close to proper form, let alone stable. In fact, most of them don't even know how to brace properly for any lift. So when I can share a variation like this, I do. All that said, you are spot on, especially with the lighter weight. I'm a huge fan of stripping weight off and going slower and for higher reps to create stress instead of slapping on as much weight as possible.
@@GymCrafter I totally agree! I use the same basic press but from a seated position. That slight forward lean feels so much better on my beat up shoulders! It is hard to mess it up!
@@mikejensen1473 Good tip! I think too many trainers or online folks force people into a standing military press way before their body can handle it. It's a great movement, but you really have to earn it and regressions like this work great to get you there. I just choose never to work past these regressions as I don't think it's worth the risk!
@ 60, started back up @58 , went back to a cheap amazon bench, dumbells, and an olympic weight set on sale at Dicks sporting goods, rode a cheap magnetic bike, 4 days a week 2hrs after work, read up on dieting, and controlled food intake, after years arms are @ 17" , my mobility is back! I'm not tired anymore, also do basic exercises, squats push ups sit ups!
I love hearing that and thanks for posting this comment! Resistance training is so underrated, but once people start feeling the benefits, it's hard to stop!
I’m purely commenting because you told me to
Nothing pure than this
😂
I've been thinking about switching to a full body program. I tried Mind Pump Aesthetic last year, but found the volume per session to just be way too much. There were days where you'd do close to 50 total working sets, including several heavy compound lifts. The lowest volume days are still 30+ sets. I found the sessions to be too long and too fatiguing. I haven't tried their Anabolic program, so maybe that's more practical.
Aesthetic is way too much volume for most people. I love the program, but don't see myself doing that again any time soon. That much volume combined with full body training is brutal and unsustainable for most people. I'll be running MAPS split in January and while that's about the same volume, it's much more manageable because it's a body part split. Trying to do high volume accessory work after deadlifts and/or squats is no fun at all, and that's exactly what they ask you to do in Aesthetic. While that used to be one of my favorite programs from them, if I had to rank all of them (I've done most of them at least once and many of them multiple times), I wouldn't rank it even in the top half I don't think
