Cerax 1010 vs Naniwa 1000
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
Two excellent 1k stones for review. The Cerax is a soaking stone, great value, fast, responsive. The Naniwa is splash and go, come with a base, and just as fast and responsive as the Cerax. Both are great bevel set stones for straight razors!
Jnat to Thuringian
Просмотров 8493 года назад
I took a razor from bevel set through to finishing. Using two jnat stones (Shohansan and Narutaki Iromono) to refine the 1k striations, then finishing on a Thuringian water stone. I used water only on the Thuri, and then finished under running water for the final polish.

Thanks what stones are you using.
Choosera 600 blue and Chosera 1000 in the green
Connecting to the exhaust of shop vac is brilliant! I was trying to rent a smoke blower, I like your solution much better!
Another question if i may. I have a couple main clean outs i could blow smoke into. I also have vent stacks on/thru the roof. Do i need to cover those before blowing smoke in? Thanks
How would you inspect a p trap of a shower in a slab home with NO crawl space? Clearly the p traps of vanities, sinks are all very easy to inspect but how would you do a p trap inspection for a washing machine drain that goes into slab or shower that drains into slab? Thoughts? Incidentally I am having a smoke test tomorrow (cost 300 dollars) and I live in Belleair Fl (boders Clearwater). I must say this sewer smell which seems to happen only at night will need resolved no matter the cost. Finally your condensation line point is well taken. Never thought of that one. Any thoughts on my comment? Best, Dave
As long as there is water in the p trap, no gas will come through. A smoke test as I’ve described will tell you if the p trap is working or not. As an alternative to a shop vac, you can also is a hair dryer. Less force but enough to push smoke through the plumbing system.
@@fishinjunky Did smoke test. House flippers omitted p trap at washer drain so smoke poured through. Rotorooter handled for 1300 plus 400 for smoke test. I have dealt with real estate for some time and I would now tell anyone on an older home get a smoke test done. Inspectors are tremendously lacking in plumbing inspections. And in fact I would say the inspection industry has failed in this regard, utterly.
I have the same stone, what do you think about it after all these years?
Thanks helpful
Thank you Jeff! A very well done video with helpful tips and a great explanation and presentation. We are researching doing a smoke test in our house and your video helps.
Glad it was helpful!
This is 100% correct. I own 3. 2 sharp and sparks and one long handle. When I first got my sharp and spark I took some old knives and sat down and practiced until I got it right. Once you get your technique down you can actually hear it when you are doing it right and also you can hear when the knife is getting sharper the more you go. The sound changes as the knife gets sharper so I know exactly what you mean. And when I say I sat down and practiced it took me about 30-45 minutes to figure it out.
You answered my question spot on…it’s the “sound.” Even with no pressure, if you get it at the correct angle there is a different sound and I thought that was when I had it right. Great video.
Great do-it-yourself fix! Quite creative on your part on the smoke test setup using a shop vac to blow the smoke into the system! Unbelievable that whoever cut the drain line did not install a cap and that the drain line for the heating system tied directly into the sewer system with no trap. Thanks for sharing how you did this.
Thanks! 👍
I have been happy with the scythe version of this stone.
I want to try that but can't find here in Philippines
The only way sewer gas can enter the furnace through a condensation drain line is through the secondary heat exchanger and in to the vent system, this wouldn’t enter the home unless there were a leak in the heat exchanger or possibly if the fresh air intake were drawing combustion air from the room rather then from outside.
Of course the naniwa professional is harder. You are comparing an aluminum oxide to a ceramic stone. One soaking and one slash and go
Did the smoke have any smell that stuck around. Thank you
Not at all
What is “draw” on a strop? What does it do and what is good for razors? Thanks
The Naniwa is extremely hard, decently friable, SNG, with a very nice and even but also finer 1k finish. Cuts well, but it is one of the more friable chosera stones. As evident by the big green mess it makes in use. Unlike say the green 400 grit which cuts extremely well, leaves a great finish, very even, and also seems finer than 400. That thing is hard, minimally friable and cuts amazing. The cerax is a soaker. It's extremely friable. Not as hard or dense. Cuts really well. But the finish it leaves is nothing like a SNG. It's for wider bevels. More friable muddy so you can use less pressure and or get wider bevels.. the finish it leaves is nothing like SNG stones, it's a matte sandblast looking finish that looks more like 400 chosera than the 1k. But even then. Both have their place but they are nothing alike. I would really suggest either. Unless you have a need for it. I like the 700 and 6k cerax. The 6k cerax is more like a 1k chosera. Grit ratings are very arbitrary and only relative to the product line. Also not the whole story because how hard and friable a stone is, including the binder, which is what makes it hard/soft and friable or not, determines how those abrasives regardless of their coarseness or fineness actually cut into the steel. This is why the 1k cerax leaves scratrches on steel that look NOTHING like the scratches the 1k chosera makes on steel. The chosera line.. the 1k is okay. The 400 is where it's at. The 600 is good but also more friable. The 800 is a really good one. The 10k I also really like. I think combos like 400 + 1k is most common. Idk man. Stones are such a weird thing. Like pokemon. The benefit of the chosera over say like shapton glass, which is actually very similar to chosera in terms of like.. hardness and friability and whatnot, kind of made to compete with it... the chosera leaves nicer scratches at every level, even though the glass cuts better in most cases and like in the higher grits the difference is idk man. The 500 glass cuts at least as well as the 400 chosera if not faster but I just like 400 chosera more. I'd likely take the 1k, 2k, 3k, glass over the chosera. The polishing stones like the 5k and 10k chosera and the 6k and beyond glass, is idk.. I guess they're basically the same same. im gonna stfu.
You proved you only made a little improvement!
Nobody would use this knife for anything! Pointless video
OK, well thanks for watching
Ebbi43 Do the world a favor and go lay down on some railroad tracks and wait for the train whistle. Go to hell.
Wtf, it's a fillet knife, so that's what people would use it for. Also, it's pretty much the same way you would sharpen any other knife, but I like and use wet stones, they're the best
I love this.
Actually, it's Rozsutec (pronounced something like: Rozsutets), but it doesn't matter that much. It's named after a mountain in Slovakia, close to the place the stone is from.
These are baked from a sand mix
Hi I might have some Thurigians and etchers in my collections but also slates but all without labels, what are the difference between etcher and Thurigian I seen in one comment you sent a comment to RUclips that Thurigian have a certain smell could you describe in the best way what the smell should be different from normal piece of slate,
All Eschers are Thuringians. Meaning they all came from mines in Thruingia Germany. However, not all Thuringians are Eschers. What separates them is the label really. Escher mined stones, and labeled them. If the label exists, it proves provenance. No label, no guarantee the stone is an Escher, but it could be a Thuringian. Regarding the smell, IMO Eschers/Thuringians do have a smell that is different from other slates. When slurried, they have a muddy, earthy odor.
@@fishinjunky Interesting, cheers for your input to my question,
I live this video. I’ve just found this product and Brad seems like a straight shooter. This will require practice but what a great sharpener
Ouch...I had to turn my head when ya scraped off that edge...ergh
He makes fabulous strops. Mine is a 3" Fast bridle strop from nearly ten years ago. It's a great product and a very good price.
Hi! What is that device, that you use on the stone, before you sharp the blade? Is it some sort of planer?
That is a diamond lapping plate. Mine has 2 sides with different grits. One side is a 400 grit, the other is a 1000 grit. It can be used for sharpening knives or for removing chips in a straight razor as well. The main purpose that I use it for is to flatten my stones, or to raise a slurry to increase cutting power of my stones. I hope this helps.
Can you explain how you did it with she shop vac? Did you put it in the smoke bomb in the bucket and then shot out the smoke?
I had to do this exercise once again as I smelled more sewage in my basement. This time I used a hair dryer instead of a shop vac. I poked holes in an empty can of corn that fit semi-snugly around the hair dryer. Once I lit the bomb, I dropped it in the can, quickly duct taped it around the dryer, and stuck the dryer in the pipe. I had a towel handy to stuff around the gaps between the dryer and the pipe. The dryer is much softer than the shop vac. It provided just the right amount of air pressure to not blow out water from my traps, or blow out the bomb itself. Give the hair dryer truck a try
@JeffT what was the issue this time??
@@prentfaiyaz Using the hair dryer trick, I found an air admittance valve under my utility sink that was not functioning properly.
Great video brother.... Thanks. Very helpful!
I have yet to see these sharpeners go up against something like 15v steel, or even m390. That's what I want to see, the high vanadium content in those steels is hard to shave off.
After several years, and learning more about sharpening, these "sharpeners" are more like honing tools. Very similar to the round knife honing sticks common to kitchen knife sets. Sharpens Best will re-align an edge, making it useful again. And it does a pretty good job of that. If your knife needs a new bevel set, remove chips etc., nothing beats good whetstone sharpening techniques.
Very helpful. Tried this tonight and it really worked well.
Thank you so much for sharing your findings with others.
Thanks for that video. I need a dovo refinished I killed the finish with peroxide! Can you help?

Awesome information! I have a unit with a wierd smell and I am thinking it could be the cat box, but the smoke test you describe could help eliminate variables. Thanks
you're welcome. Good luck figuring it out! I know how frustrating it can be.
Condensate lines should not be drained into sewer. Either put a condensation pump on and drain to utility tub or drain to a sump pump.
Right. I was thinking that too
Exactly
Why
Yes then it is not sealed into a drain connected directly into the sewer line it would then drip above the sewer trap in the laundry sink.
Yeah that’s very smart to clean up the stone as your working to insure that’s it’s flat and have fresh abrasive
I agree. thanks for watching!
A lot of people respect gold dollars because they are hard to hone and that’s what a lot of guys including myself learned on. I still have 2 in my den
I had adjustments done by Anthony and Dr Matt and dr Matt’s by far was better. The heel looks & feels so smooth
I heard these are trash. My first strop was the naked armor blue eel strop. That was junk too
I have the same diamond plate, pretty affordable
It seems that you Touch the stone with your edge every time you Flip the knife
The razor is flipped on its spine every time, and then the edge is laid down to make contact with the stone. Light forward torque is applied toward the edge to ensure contact is being made between the stone and the edge. I do not touch the stone with the edge of the razor. Rather, the spine touches the stone as I flip the razor. Alternatively, you could lift the spine off the stone, then lay the razor down. It is your choice.
This is the chaotic good solution we all needed.
First of all this is a great video. Very thorough explanation of the issue and resolution. I'd like to add a couple observations. 1. All condensation lines from HVAC units should have a trap due to the static pressure inside the ductwork. You can check out videos that explain the issue on RUclips. 2. Condensate lines should have an air gap between the discharge point and the intake point i.e. floor drain, washtub etc. You DON'T want a sewage backup going into your furnace. 3. Here's something I've observed with these rectorseal p-traps. The manufacturer requires that you glue with PVC cement the clear tube to the white connectors. The clear tube is made of PVC. The reason it's shipped unglued is to give you flexibility on installation. For some reason people think that's supposed to be a water tight fit without glue. 4. This bring me to my question. Why do you have green tape on your p-trap? Did you glue it or is the tape how you sealed it?
Thanks for the comments! I did actually use PVC glue to connect the clear tube to the hard plastic p trap. The green tape I just had in my tool box, and figured it couldn't hurt. But to your point, it was not necessary.
Do you need an air gap if there is a condensate pump? Don’t those have one way valves?
Nice video I recently got a Nakayama Asagi and a Ozuku Asagi. I go from 5k Naniwa to the Nakayama Asagi and finish on the Ozuku. Been getting some lovely edges and the easiest hanging hair tests that I have done. I have also used Welsh slate and my ILR. I have just been experimenting. Welsh slate is underrated imo. Very best regards Gordon 👍
nice video
best wishes, dapper shaves
One of my buddies on the Facebook groups was recommending one of these, but I just got a replacement leather from RazorEmporium gonna have to wait a while
Nice! I ordered the 400grit Naniwa. Same color and would that one be good for damaged blades to set the bevel quick?
Yes. 400 grit will be very aggressive. Good for heavy metal removal. You’ll set a bevel quickly with that. Just be careful not to over do it. 1000 grit will follow and refine that 400 grit stone. Good luck.
@@fishinjunky ok thanks for your input.

C-rex's the better choice although the Nanaw is a nice Stone but it's been known to dry up and crack. Although for straight edge razors I prefer shapton glass stones or straight up Arkansas I have all these Stones I've mentioned
I do like my Cerax as well. I reach for it all the time. The Chosera is equally as nice, is splash and go, and might polish just a bit more. But I think I like the feedback of the Cerax. Toss - up. Both are great stones....
