You know by God, I believe you have actually learned from my videos. You are doing a very good job. If I were to tweek your work a bit I would say to learn to use the Sharp-N-Spark pinched between your thumb and index finger. It is a little easier., and faster. Please don't get me wrong, you do very well. A great representation of how it works. Please remember at the very end you must flip the knife over from side to side ( each stroke )--full length, about 20 time using lighter and lighter pressure as you go. The last 3 or 4 on each side should be as light as you can touch the blade and that should be at 90 deg. to the blade length ways. You are doing a very honest presentation. And that is all I ask from any one. Brad
Brad Buckner I have a 3 stage Chef’s Choice model 200-3, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. For one, it does not lock in the blade angle, which definitely matters! Another drawback is that it’s not smooth. The RPMs are not high enough which causes excessive vibrations. The 3rd stage is a manual polishing stage which really doesn’t do much. So, when I have some extra cash, I’m going to buy one of Brads knife sharpeners. I need this primarily for my kitchen knives. I have a Santoku knife that I was desperate to sharpen, so I used the Chef’s Choice. It no longer has a Japanese style cutting edge LOL. Another knife I have is a 14” meat slicing knife for slicing BBQ roasts cooked on my Weber Smokey Mountain. This is one of those knives that has a big round tip that you see BBQ pitmasters using. Mine is very dull and it has been from the beginning. I got mine from GFS (Gordon Food Services).
@@TheDabbinDave Sharpens best does a good job of realigning the blade. As you use a knife, the apex of the edge becomes damaged, rolled etc. The 90 degree corner can help to realign the apex. So its nice for touch ups. The V notch will peel away steel. Since making these vids, I've become more adept at hand sharpening, which is my preferred method now.
I really appreciate your Sharpens Best product reviews. They are the only independent ones I can find on RUclips. I'd love to see you do updates after 6 months or so to see what you then think of the ease of use, your results and the amount of metal removed by the sharpeners. Thanks again for sharing with the RUclips viewers.
+Joe P Thanks Joe. I still like the sharpener very much. I've since spent about $10.00 on thrift store knives, including some nice ones like a Henkels kitchen knife. The sharpener works well, and I've used it on all my kitchen knives after I felt comfortable with it. The sharpener removes very little metal, even when you apply heavy pressure to very dull knives. All that said, I still see value in a good wet stone in order to put a really nice edge on a knife. I've yet to purchase a wet stone, and am giving it consideration. The sharpensbest sharpeners I think are good once you get used to using it, and are portable, which is great in a pinch.
@@fishinjunky Do you still use your wet stones or do you just use the Sharpen's Best sharpener? I ask because I am new to using the Sharpen's Best Sharpener and it seems so much easier setup as well as sharpening session then using wet stones.
I’ve had mine for about 8 months now. I have 2 sharp and sparks on both sets of my keys and a long handle I have at the house. I use them all the time. For a quick job to get your knife as sharp as you need it you can’t beat it. I’d recommend it to anybody. Just make sure you use an old knife and practice on it first to get your technique down but like he said. Look, listen and feel. You’ll be able to look at the angle you need to use, you’ll be able to listen to the sharpener change sounds as the knife gets sharper and you’ll also feel it. Really easy to use.
Thanks @@Drewski423 over the last 3 days I sharpened all my knives (EDC/Chef), then sharpened my buddies knifes, as well as for a restaurant in my area. So I am working on getting some experience with it.
Thank you for making these videos. After watching Brad's videos, I ordered a long handle and went to town. I got the knives to a certain sharpness but could not cut paper without sawing. I spent hours trying to figure out on cheap kitchen knives and at a certain point, I decided to give up as I could not find the technique that is needed to sharpen. I rewatched Brad's videos, but still didn't figure it out. After watching your videos today and getting the rhythm to be about the same speed as you, I was able to get my knifes to cut paper. Now I want to get myself a poker chip sharpener!
I also came looking for an idependent review... ty. Im scratching my head wondering why on earth he isnt sending them out to some of the many survivalist channel owners on youtube to review. Since lightweight, fast and portable is its main feature.
This is 100% correct. I own 3. 2 sharp and sparks and one long handle. When I first got my sharp and spark I took some old knives and sat down and practiced until I got it right. Once you get your technique down you can actually hear it when you are doing it right and also you can hear when the knife is getting sharper the more you go. The sound changes as the knife gets sharper so I know exactly what you mean. And when I say I sat down and practiced it took me about 30-45 minutes to figure it out.
Thanks for putting this out there. I've watched all of Brad's videos and I use the poker chip on my cheap knives but I feel I need something else for my good ones. It's just like you said, it's all technique, and he makes it look so easy and fast it's hard to copy it. I wish he would put some written instructions on his site in addition to the videos, so you could understand what his philosophy is with these things. But you have done a really nice job of showing how to get a good edge with it. Very nice.
Hello, I watched the videos regarding this product and decided to buy the Pocket Pack, Longhandle, Rectangle & the pocked chip. It was delivered to me in the UK in double quick time and I was surprised and pleased at such speedy service. Before using I watched your videos and copied the technique as closely as possible. After hours of practice I could not get a smooth, sharp edge with the Long or the Rectangle device, but the poker chip was superb, giving me a keen edge on my Victorinox pocket knives. I became suspicious so I checked the carbide blade on the first two...I discovered both the Long & Rectangle blades are chipped which I can easily see with a small magnifying glass. I'll put the poker chip on my key ring, the other two can stay in my tool box. I'll stick with my DC4 and small leather strop when out and about. I'm rather disappointed and would not recommend the Sharpensbest. Kindest regards.
I find myself using my poker chip more often, and seem to like it equally as well as the sharp n spark. If your carbide is chipped, I would recommend contacting Brad Buckner and express your issue with the carbide. No reason that they should be chipped, and I can only imagine those chips are causing issues to arise with their performance. I would be disappointed as well.... I can tell you that Brad has treated me well in the customer service department. My first shipment that he sent me came damaged - the contents were missing. He quickly sent me new ones. If your carbide is damaged, he may want to see those for quality control purposes. Thank you for watching my videos. I hope they help you.
+jdt1130 jdt1130 Thank you for your advice jdt1130, but I live in the UK and it hardly seems worth the effort, I'll chalk the loss up to experience. Take care.
Clips, I am just now reading your post. I have had some people say there carbides are chipped. When you look with a magnifying glass you will see the GRIND marks from the grinding wheel that ground the carbide. I do take back sharpeners that people say this about and have never seen one yet that did not work fine. Did you contact sharpensbest about this problem at the time. Talk to me.
I do the same thing with my bayite. Feral rod striker it has a 90° Angle and its 65 rockwell I was watching his video and I said what the hell I picked it up easy within 10 minutes I was shaving my arm with three of my dull Knives
I have found the Green Beetle review of the Sharpens Best product. It is quite negative, but I think the GB user might not have the technique down as Buckner instructs in his videos. On the other hand I wonder just how easy it is to get that technique down.
+Joe P I agree. I've seen that video, and he didn't really have the technique down. It didn't give the viewer a good perception on the effectiveness of the sharpens best by using poor technique. I tend to overcomplicate/over think things sometimes, so it took me several hours to understand how to use this sharpener. I wouldn't say that it is "easy" to learn how to use this sharpener. It takes some time, and like learning any skill requires persistence. I tried to demonstrate how to use this sharpener to the best of my ability. Perhaps I'll do another video to assist others on how to reduce the learning curve. Thanks for your comments! I really appreciate it.
+Joe P Hello, this is Brad. Thank you for watching. Green Beetle says some things that are true and a lot that almost seem like he enjoys running it down for what ever reason. I don't think he spent much time learning before sharpening. He just acts a little dumb. I see some people at my table at a show that get it and do well in only about 10 minutes. Many people purchase on Sat. and come back in on Sun., , hold the sharpener up, smile, and say---- this damn thing actually works. I smile and say how do you know. After several years, and learning more about sharpening, these "sharpeners" are more like honing tools. Very similar to the round knife honing sticks common to kitchen knife sets. Sharpens Best will re-align an edge, making it useful again. And it does a pretty good job of that. If your knife needs a new bevel set, remove chips etc., nothing beats good whetstone sharpening techniques.
