I've had mine for around 15 years. I learned about it from a professional saddle maker. I bought a used Ryobi grinder, and reversed the base so the switch is in front, but the wheel turns away from you. That really is a game changer, and much safer. I sharpen everything with it. I even re-sharpen my utility knife blades because it is faster to re-sharpen them than to replace them! I would advise reading the instructions once.

I live in New Jersey. That is East Coast. Someone from Ohio or anywhere in the Midwest are just that: Midwesterners, not from the East Coast. In fact, those whose state does not border the Atlantic Ocean are not from the East Coast.
I'd like to see an ax and lawn mower blades sharpened. They are such heavy iron, not like a knife blade. I would seem like they would be more than the grinder wheels could handle.

I’m an east coast guy I guess and from Florida. But west Florida and almost Alabama. We like to hunt, fish, hike, camp, shoot and sharpen knives. Love that sharpener. In a seconds I can have a sharp enough edge to cut anything and spend a little more time on it and you can shave with almost anything. Mine is on the bench all the time so I can sharpen my edc that I use daily every day when I get home as I just walk past it. The add the new grit you have to remove the old grit. I use a sandpaper wheel on my angle grinder to get it all removed. Just run the sharpener and run the angle grinder over it. Put paper under the wheel, run some elmers glue on the wheel. Then sprinkle the new grit on the glue as you rotate the wheel. Use the paper to save the grit. Wait 24 hours and your good to go. Also unscrew the base and flip it around you the power switch is in the front but now the wheel is spinning away from you. Much better! Enjoy

I bought an old used grinder for like 35€ just for this and made the wheel myself out of an old mdf board I was able to get for free. I had like a 5 or 6 mm thick board, I cut 3 cyrcles out and than sanded them on the grinder so they are flat and applied fine hardware store compound, goes from dull knife to razor in like 90 seconds, one of the best and cheapest systems in my opinion and it is surprisingly easy to use, highly reccomended.

I've been using the MDF system for years, everything from my fine wood carving tools to my axe. Now I make my own by roughing out rounds on my band saw and then refining them on the lathe. BEST SYSTEM EVER. I know you purest will bash this but nothing beats the simplicity and quality.

Whett stones, either oil or water, are the best for professional's but I tried a Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition sharpener and I have to tell you it works great! Even if you're a beginner it works well and is easy. The draw back is it is a little expensive for some people. But so are quality whett stones.

I made this system myself, cut the wheels using a bandsaw. After mounting them I turned 'em like I would on a lathe, works just fine. My shop has low humidity, but instead of MDF I'm sure you could use any kind layered wood, as long as the glue between the layers is waterproof.

  • @brichter4669
    @brichter4669 4 года назад

Turn your grinder around so the paper wheels spin away from you, not toward you. The direction you have the blades spinning can be very dangerous. The knife blade can catch the wheel, and it will throw the knife out of your hand and who knows where it will go. I had a knife that chucked the wheel, it ripped the knife out of my hand and it flew up against the wall. Fortunately, I was not injured. Angle does matter because you don't want to over sharpen the knife edge and make it too thin. Most knife manufacturers provide the angle that is best for their product and purpose. Last tip, draw the blade across the wheel closer to the top of the wheel with the blade up, not down, but not directly on top. Doing this gives you better control of the knife and is safer. I only use paper wheels to sharpen my knives now. It is fast, easy and reliable.

My dad used these wheels (home made) and polishing wheels to sharpen knives my entire life, and I'm 45 now. In fact, he also used plywood he cut in to disks for the grinder. Earliest memory of him sharpening a Buck hunting knife with these when I was about 8 years old.

Fits right in the palm of your hand. Carry in your pocket no problem. I keep them also in the kitchen to keep knives really sharp for making life simple. I found Smiths in Ace stores. I've had a set of these for a couple of years. Definitely do flip the grinder around 180, it's far easier (and safer) with the wheel rotating away from you. Unless a knife is really dull I don't use the carbide wheel, because the carbide comes off pretty easily and putting it back on is annoying. To get me started on angles I printed out protractors on paper and glued them to the wheels, but once I got a feel for it I stopped looking at those.

  • @scdub

I have this system and it’s great/fast. My one bit of advice is to start off with knives that you aren’t worried about re: cosmetics. I use it more on yard tools than kitchen/field/folding knives. It’ll work for those, but without a jig or something I don’t think most people will be able to get “perfect” results. Also - no affiliation - the $8 Baryonyx American Mutt bench stone will take away steel ALMOST as fast but with much more control imho... Ok, a third bit of advice - if you flip that grinder around so the wheel spins away from you it’ll feel a lot less awkward... 👍

What I always tell people is that consistency is the most important factor in having a sharp tool. Overtime you can figure out roughly a good enough angle depending on what the tool is used for and the judge the quality of the steel is with use. Just take an educated guess and run with it with consistency. Don't put the angle of an axe on a straight razor and vice versa.

This system works great for sharpening, but the coarse wheel will immediately remove the temper from higher end knives. Also, it creates a convex edge, making it difficult to hone the edge with a steel. If the wheel could spin slowly, it would be a better system

I use whetstones, a skill past down in my family dating back to Germany. I also make professional grade throwing knives that I heat treat here myself. I do not like anything mechanical on a finished blade the creates friction which creates heat. Heat causes tempering which softens carbon steels. The more times you do it the lower the Rockwell (hardness scale number) becomes and the less edge retention you will get from which in the beginning was probably a good knife if it was made in USA, Germany or Japan

    And a pen knife
    And two stones
    One rough
    One smooth
    That's it.
    Rough at home
    Smooth in the bag
That smooth needs to feel and love that edge.

Very good review. Like how you did real life sharpening. I'm with you don't care about the angel just want it sharp.

Mason Dixon line runs East to West separating the North from South over to New Mexico so West of the Mason Dixon is habitable but this guys obviously lives in the Atlantic Ocean. I don’t think he knows it though.

Turn the grinder around so it is turning away from you.

I really don't see the point it takes 30 seconds to re-sharpen a knife, (it doesn't have to be perfect)
i always have 2 stones on the bench ready, with a bit of water, one is really rough, like 120 grit, the other is more like 800-1000, combining both you get a fast grind and a fast "polish" of the blade,
it is fast and easy, sharpening doesn't have to be super precise (most of the time)

This is a copy of an amateur guy who made his own from a sheet of MDF a few years ago here in the UK and coated it with polishing compound

I'm not an Internet Safety Nazi, I promise, but...
You scare me using the top half of the wheel like that. If the blade catches the knife gets pulled out of your hand and goes flying toward your gut. If you use the bottom half of the wheel, it's a little more awkward, but at least the knife gets pulled down or behind the grinder if it catches and rips it out of your hand. Be careful, sir...I want to enjoy future videos.
