At work one time someone asked me if I had scissors or a knife, I asked what for and they said to cut some string that was holding up some clothesline wire. I let them use my knife but, next I here them getting frustrated and muttering about it not cutting. I went over to find they couldn't reach the string so the tried to cut the clothesline wire with it. Rolled the edge so bad you could see the shine along it from a mile away.

I've had a few of those that I purchased from Marble's of Gladstone when they were in Michigan and have used them in the field for over 25 years. Like you state in your video, certainly not the best edge one could possibly get - but in the field or on the road - they do work. FWIW mine had been used for many many years and still works perfectly. Since I am very good about keeping my blades super sharp (on my Dan's Arkansas Stones) - I use it more for friends knives when Hunting or at their cabin and it truly helps turn their "Butter Knives: into something serviceable. I also don't keep it on my key chain but I always have one in my Hinting Vest and another in my Glove Box. I believe I paid #10 each and have gotten every penny out if them. BTW - the back of the devise is meant to hone the blade after sharpening it between the Carbide.

I once had a small sharpening stone with a small sleeve that fit on a keychain. I kept it in a fishing tackle box and it fit nicely into one of the lure spaces. It was about that same size. Small stone, with a sleeve, for about 1 dollar purchased in the 1980s. It worked wonderfully for sharpening pocket knives up to fishing filet knives. I wish I still had that. I like the idea of a small portable knife tool, though.

It reminds me of my Smith's brand pocket sharpener. If this had a ceramic side it would be my new contender for quick and dirty camp/field sharpening tool. The Smith's also has a rod for serrated blades but the quality is dubious at best on the Smith's. It gets the job done at a cheaper price but they will break under abuse or just heavy use. Nice review, I found it fair and reasonable for what the tool is meant for.

If you are pulling the curly shavings off the edge, you are putting too much pressure on the edge. Using moderate pressure will leave coffee ground looking debris. When you get it where your finger pads "stick" to the edge, change the pressure to light. Using the thumb and forefinger on the scales and the middle finger just supporting the knife pull 15 to 20 times. Use only the weight of the knife. No pressure from your hand. It may take 40 to 80 strokes to get a good "sticky" edge. At that point it is or should be almost hair poping. If there is some leather around finish up with some light following strokes. Taking your time shaving sharp is possible.
My biggest problem starting out with the carbide sharpeners was wanting to do it in a minute or two. It is like using diamond plates. You can bear down and abuse the blade and sharpener. Using a light touch changes things.
I am proficient using water, ceramic and diamond stones. Even have a belt sander set up.
But sharpening with these carbides is a challenge. I can take a thrift store SS table knife and put a tomato shaving edge on it in about 10 minutes using one of these "X" carbide sharpeners.
Is it a reflective mirror edge? Nope. Looks like it came from a factory in China. But something I have learned from sharpening for the public.
THEY DON'T CARE HOW IT LOOKS. For $10 all they want is for it to cut and the edge to last. For my public sharpening I use the belt sander or my Tru Hone. Somebody drops off 10 knives and wants them back in 30 minutes you are not going to use stones, sticks or rods.
Practice with this carbide sharpener and I bet in a month you will change your view toward them. Replace stones? No. But they do work.

A decent set of progressively more fine whetstones and a few old knives with which to practice is the last knife sharpener you'll ever need. Been using the same set of stones for 6 years now and all of my knives can cut paper like it's butter and shave hair with no issues. I've brought back some super high end knives that I found at Goodwill from the dead with a bit of time on the stones and I still use those knives in the kitchen today. Once you learn to sharpen a knife well using stones and oil you can use the same knives for (well, for me it's been 6 years) decades if you keep an edge on them.

I have an old small Gerber branded pull thru sharpener that has ceramic rods on 1 side and something gray on the other. I never got it to work well but I do prefer hair shaving Sharp knives. I have sharpening compound on my leather belt. It works really well for touching up a blade as long as there are no chips or burrs. Maybe your sharpener would work well with a strop.

Not quite as compact but i love my spyderco “double stuff” , i load the leather pouch with some medium compound to strop afterwards and it gives you a really nice edge with a near mirror finish or the harder steels like m390 and 20cv etc like to be left a little toothy but if im at home i use the same process followed by the spyderco 306uf (ultra fine ceramic bench stone full size) ive never used wetstones since as not to risk getting the particles/slurry in the pivot

There are pull through sharpeners that have flexible arms. Those are actually pretty good because they act more like a Chef's steel and hones the edge without taking off a lot of metal. Great for maintaining a good edge but not for a far gone edge. I use the Hunter Honer but the Block sharpener is similar.

I have the same Para 3 and I think that I prefer the Para 2. But, I have been quite happy with a Ganzo F7563 that is less than $25 and robust as heck. The carbide sharpeners are only good for cheap knives and for an emergency after a major amount of edge damage. Otherwise, it’s not useful at all for maintaining an edge that’s adequate. It’s a restoration tool rather than a maintenance tool.

It's not a sharpener i would use often however, in an emergency, heck yeah. I wouldn't hesitate to get that nearly instant sharp edge. At that compact size, i think it great. I've been in situations where carrying a sharpener just wasn't possible and wound up w a nearly unusable knife from dulling the edge. This sharpener would have really come in handy (and I'd probably have at least 1 less scar, lol). Thanks for the heads up. Be Blessed in all good things.

I have always been told to steer clear of those types of sharpeners compared to wet stones. They are good in emergency situations though.

i think it would be good to carry in your tackle box to help keep an edge on your fillet knife, the rockfish on the california coast have some pretty hardy bones and after a few fish my kershaw fillet knife does lose its edge somewhat,

I keep a mini whetstone in my backpack and a small strop I made, it’s more than enough to keep my tools sharp when I’m out.

I use that kind of sharpner in the feild. Extra light pressure many strokes and leather strop. It will be a serviceable edge and shave hair. Most of my knifes are not super steel that might make a diffrence.

    Life after the adventure van:
"When was the last time you used your F-250 pickup?"
Cody: "I used the window the other day to touch up my knife. Does that count?"
Loved the no nonsense video as always. Might not be the best knife sharpener, but it looks like it would fit in any pack or even EDC.

@keith moore haha yeah I was just kidding because in another video he said he barely uses it since he got the van.

I have diamond stones and other sharpening stones. However, my favorite two sharpeners are from Lansky. One is a wood block with holes set at 20 and 25 degrees that hold either diamond encrusted metal sharpening sticks or ceramic sticks. The other is a small pocket sharpener with rough carbide V cutters, ceramic V cutters, plus a diamond and ceramic surfaces for touching up serrated blades. It's not the best sharpener in the world but it will always have a spot in my packs for touching up a blade. Best of all, they are under $10.
Can I do a bit better with other sharpeners? Sure... but it's not always worth the time investment.

I don't even own a stone anymore, for my urban tasks I've done phenomenally with just a coffee cup and strop on Duck pants, especially on anything with that spray cheese soft Victorinox steel. Works just as well with anything high carbon.
