Heitstrengning Music

Добавлен 1 апр 2022
Hi! I make videos about music despite having below average musical skills.
In a space saturated with incredible talent and musicianship beyond belief, I think there's something to be said for those of us with no natural talent. No innate disposition if you will, but with tremendous passion to still create music.
When it comes to RUclips and social media overall, I can sometimes feel like we have lost a certain.. soul, perhaps? That pure dedicated passion for music, with no regard for likes or views.
On this channel I will release my own original music, as well as share and document the process of making music, writing songs and dealing with the emotional struggle of constantly feeling like I don't deserve to call myself a musician.

THE Most IMPORTANT Part of Music Theory
If I had to name one thing about music theory that really transformed my songwriting it would be learning and memorizing interval patterns for different modes and scales.
In this video I demonstrate why it's so important, and showcase the transcendent power of tweaking an interval or two.

AWESOME SIMPLE HACK to getting what you want out of MUSIC

Understanding Fear Based Procrastination - Stream Theory Ep. 6
Hey just so you know people will always be there for you. You are amazing and have taught me (someone who teaches others music theory) a lot about music theory in the metal and music theory in general.
Thank you Jack! I really appreciate this because that's the side I don't see. And it means so much, and gives me so much energy to hear you say that. I hope your day is going great!
I think understanding the intervals is understanding how the notes interact with each other, a very powerful tool! Great and relaxing vídeo 👏👏
Exactly. I love how it gives you an immediate roadmap for testing ideas.
I was bout to punch the roof because I couldn't find out where the squeaking was coming from and I was trying to pay attention hahahaha
Haha I'm terribly sorry!!
A modern metal dude teaching me about theory.... I'll take it
Thanks for giving me a chance! Hope your day is going well.
@@heitstrengningmusic Thank you. Have a great day :)
A starting chanell l hehe let's watch!
Haha what's the verdict?
So, D-Phrygian is basically just G-Minor with D as the root note, with D as the "Home note"? Same with D-Lydian beeing just A-Major right?
Yes but in my experience it's not that useful to think of them that way when you're playing cause you lose your sense of center. When playing D Phrygian, you should be thinking of D as the center and bringing out the mode's color through its unique intervals. If you're thinking of G Minor, the shape might be familiar, but you don't know what interval is where in relation to D and you start playing mechanically. It's way more useful to think "This is just like a D Minor but with a flat 2".
Yes! That's the thing with modes. They are derived from the major scale in that sense. D Lydian would be the fourth mode of A major for example, but the crucial point is, just like you say, that D is the "home note" in that case, not A. Personally I don't think too much about the relative major of any mode, because I find that it distracts more than it helps. But you are 100% correct.
@@georgetzathas9002 100%! Thanks for the great input.
Awesome Video ❤❤
@@SujilGaming55 Thank you! Have a wonderful day!
Great video. At one point, I paused the video to see if the bird was outside my window or coming from your end. In retrospect, I realised the bird's Swedish accent should have been a dead giveaway.🤣🎸🤘 This truly was a great video. I'm learning guitar in my early 50s, and my UN-spongelike brain struggles with the theory side. How you put it; in a clear, entertaining, and interesting way, helped immensely.
Haha yes those Swedish birds are unmistakenly funny sounding aren't they! Thank you. That means a lot, and it's definitely comments like these that inspire me to keep going with these kinds of videos. I try to explore and explain theory in a way that once resonated with me, as I feel so many people overcomplicate things, especially regarding the modes.
I hope the constant bird call throughout the video adds a pleasant ambience to things. If not, apologies for the inconvenience!
It does add a nice ambiance!
Great video Filip! Helped jog the old memory on some music theory I’ve forgotten over the last year. Thanks!

Hey! I've missed you in the comments lately. Hope you're doing well! And thank you kindly for the very nice words, and for the support. I appreciate it a bunch.
Hey Filip, it’s been a while! It’s Ami, previously known as Oscar from Needs More Cowbell. I’ve been gone for some time, I’ve been through an awful lot in the last 9 months, my transition affected my life an awful lot, and as I grappled with my new life I really struggled, and I ended up purging most of my presence from the internet in an attempt to gain some semblance of control, which I immediately regretted, although I do have all my old videos backed up. Several times I’ve thought about commenting on your channel again but the regret and pain was overwhelming. I’m definitely still battling through it all but tonight I took the first steps to healing by reuploading my album to Spotify and have begun writing and editing again. I don’t know if I’ll return to the internet in the same way, but I’m working on it. I thought of you and am so pleased to come back to your channel and see how well it is doing. I can’t wait to hear your new album, and I’m sorry for keeping you in the dark for so long. I truly wish you all the best with the record and will happily be in your comment section again, if you’ll have me. Your old friend, Ami
Hi Ami! Thank you for the nice words, and for returning to the channel. I wondered many times what happened and how you were doing. I'm sorry to hear you made decisions that you immediately regretted, and I can only imagine how difficult things must have been. You are of course welcome here any time, and I'd be happy to have you. Do you still play music?
@@heitstrengningmusic I haven’t played music in a while, but I’m slowly getting back to repairing my relationship with music. Trying to listen to the music I used to love and watching videos and films about music that inspire me. I’ll pickup my bass again when I’m ready, no doubt. I hope you’ve been well these past 9 months?
@@AmiQ99 I hope so. There's so much healing power in music, as you're well aware of course. But it sounds wise to let things take their time and not force anything either. I've been well, thank you. It's the usual struggle of finding enough time to keep momentum going here.
Honestly thank you so much for making this video. I really appreciate you. These are concepts I wanted to learn but I couldn't find a god teacher.
Thank you for saying that. I appreciate you, for being here and letting me know. I hope you have a fantastic day!
This is a real sweet video, with some of your coolest musical examples. There's a variation of the dead stop which is kind of like a musical anti jumpscare, where instead of introducing a new idea after the stop you introduce the same idea, but maybe with a slight difference, like a different drum beat. For me it helps me get more mileage out of one idea, but hopefully keeps the listener onboard with that feeling of getting hit with something different, but very familiar at the same time.
Thank you! I truly appreciate you saying that since the video took a long time and completely tanked haha. Yes! That's a great example. I use that on at least one of the remaining songs for the album. Maybe both.
I'm a big fan of the deadstop. One thing you can add in certain circumstances is a short fade-in of the chord from the next part, it can make it even more impactful when used at the right time. As for feedback, for dummies like me it would be helpful to add some simple audio illustrations to your explanations as you speak (or in between sentences), for example at 03:40. And during the example you give at 04:27 maybe add some text overlay like you do at the end of the video. Maybe it's just me but I struggle with identifying exactly what you're calling attention to and when. Other than that the video is very well put together as always, and an enjoyable watch 🤘
Yes! Great suggestion! I actually do this a lot as well. Or I would sometimes also repeat the root note of the upcoming chord over and over and make it go from really quiet to louder. I think that builds nicely too. This is super valuable feedback. I will try to be a lot more clear on what I call attention to and when. I've actually noticed this before in older videos that I struggle with it too haha! It's so obvious to me in the moment, and I have the whole part/song clear in my head visually when I make these videos.. but then that fades with time, and I approach it with a fresh perspective, and can feel a little lost. So, I'm really glad you pointed that out, it's very helpful.
@@heitstrengningmusic Yeah it's a very common thing to have something obvious in your mind while working on it, but not so much when you get back to it later! I've experienced it too :) It can help having someone watch your video before release, if you don't wish to wait several days to "test" it yourself
@@sloenmusic Just having you bring it up is already a huge help! So, thanks again.

It definitely has a strong, creepy vibe. I like it. It reminds me of a scene from Twilight (but in a good way!).
Sure does! The potential is amazing. Haha, "but in a good way." Are there no good scenes in Twilight?! I think the first movie at least has some nice pacific northwestian atmosphere to enjoy! But yeah, that's pretty much it I guess.
@@heitstrengningmusic Lots of people like to hate on Twilight and I get it because the writing is not great but I honestly enjoyed the first one, especially the visual shots of the forests and the creepy soundtrack

Sly & The Family Stones - Everyday People is only one chord. Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax, Two Tribes and Welcome To the Pleasuredome are all just E.
I'll have to listen to those! Thank you!
@@heitstrengningmusic The Frankie tunes actually might cheat a little and have either bridges or intros that veer off E, but it's amazing what they can do with 90% of the song in one chord. And they turned them into huge hits.
hello from Siberia! good luck with your album, looking forward to listening to it
Hello there! Thank you so much for watching, and for the kind words! I hope you'll still be here for the release, it's about halfway completed, but most songs are (almost) written. Have a wonderful day!
@@heitstrengningmusic btw, I like how you made a list of features describing the music you were going to write; well, maybe it's a common practice, but the way you did it - I literally recognized myself, because I would do that for my visual art. I find it fascinating - describing something that is not brought to this world yet
@@8w6good8 I don't know if it's common actually. We discussed this a little on the Discord recently, as I was talking about a song idea I had and how I had the whole song in my head, and what I wanted all the different sections to be like, but I didn't have anything written yet. I got the impression there that this wasn't very common, at least among them. But I love that. I love how everyone's process is so different. So, I'm with you completely. It's very fascinating. I have a very clear picture of what I want to bring into this world usually, and the challenge is to get it as close as possible. Which is hard! Where can I see some of your visual art btw?
@@heitstrengningmusic replied you by email
Dude, randomly came across the channel (algorithm is working). Two thoughts for your consideration. 1. No one is doing philosophy of music - can you make something graat out that those two talents (music and philosophy)? 2. You can chill on the video effects. Rick Beato, Marty Swartz and many other great music RUclipsrs add slim to none effects. Find an interesting niche, develop interesting content, present it with good quality audio and video sans effects, and they will come. Advice from a non RUclipsr - but i am a geezer and a music fiend. So maybe some cred. 😀
Hi John! Thank you for your thoughts! I appreciate the input and that you took the time to share your thoughts. I would assume most RUclips viewers are non RUclipsrs anyway so there's definitely cred in your position as that, and as a music fiend haha. I'd like to think I've come some ways since this video, and I've been working on the things you've mentioned. The biggest struggle is by far having enough time between work and family to put out enough quality videos. I hope your day is going great, and it's always wonderful to see the RUclips algorithm do its thing (when it works)!

Haha! I also love its Opeth-esque quality.
This was excellent! First.....you're just damn good at editing and storytelling and building a narrative and whatnot. But also there's a self awareness to what you're doing that makes it compelling....like I'm in on it all. And yes, the thing u kept playing was indeed catchy and cool. The final bar...with that low bass note, THAT is what sold it for me, personally. Just subbed. :)
Thank you so much for this! Finding enough time between work and family to keep making videos can be so hard. Comments like these give so much energy to keep going. And I'm pretty sure I'm speaking for all small RUclipsrs. Have an awesome day!
