A couple new plans for the layout, potentially a new local being added, and surprise surprise I'm tinkering with the yard.
Quick update

I meant to say classification tracks not arrival departure tracks near the end of the video. Next project is working on Hollidaysburg.

HO Scale PRR Layout Episode 44: Layout Overview & Upcoming Operating Session
Просмотров 9044 года назад
In this video I go over the entire layout, explaining how I designed it, how it runs, what I plan on doing next, and my upcoming operating session. I also mention auto reversers. I don't believe I mentioned it but I currently manually switch the polarity so there is no short but I plan on putting in 2 auto reversing modules so I no longer have to throw a switch to change the polarity. I talk ab...

I recorded this video 5 different times and ran out of space on my camera so you're only missing about 20 seconds of footage. The fine ballast didn't take me months, I'm not sure what I was thinking when I said that. It did take a good 2 or 3 weeks though. Probably about a total of 15-20 hours worth of work. Episode 43. I've gotten a nice chunk of scenery done.

I hear ya. Been Eight months here. Work, no work, life/death it happens. It's just a hobby but always appreciate your updates. Thanks much
I tend to work on the layout in spurts too so that adds to the delays at times but I'm glad you like the updates!
Glad to see you still in the MRR game…looking forward to seeing your 2024 progress…Happy New Year
Thanks, I'm looking forward to seeing your 2024 progress as well. Happy New Year!
Looks great buddy happy new year
Thanks, Happy New Year to you too.
Looks great, Happy New Year!
Thanks, Happy New Year to you too!
Great update, thanks. The entire hobby is a compromise, which is nearly impossible when passionate. Keep up the good work.
Wow, that is quite the yard. Well done. Layout looks great.
In the is the concrete floor sealed? That would help with keeping humidity down. Glad to see an update video from you. I hope you keep posting and post more often. Looking forward to watching your layout progress. Model railroad empire build in progress. Stay well. -Wil 👍
It's not sealed and the dehumidifier is in the finished part of the basement so when the dehumidifier died, the door to the train room swelled up so much it wouldn't even shut properly. I should have realized then that I was going to have problems with the layout. Luckily ever since getting a new one there hasn't been any issues. I plan on posting more now that I'm starting to finish the last of the track plan. Thanks for watching and have a Merry Christmas! -Tyler
Great update. Got started on mine. Yeap, its just a hobby but more an exercise in compromise. Merry Christmas!
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too.
Looking forward to seeing more from the Penn MRR…huge yard 👍🏽
'Set Up Running' 😉 some trains will be a motivator for sure. Really looking forward to next update
10:00 Haha, I was right. Counted 18 in your last vid. Yeap, they are beauties.
Is that 18 hoppers behind the M1b? Sure look great. What's the mfg?
Yep, that is correct. The manufacturer for the M1b is Broadway Limited, and the hoppers are all Bowser.
@@pennsylvaniamodelrailroad Thanks. I saw your tip on the H21 hoppers coming from Bowser. So I'll keep an eye out for them.
😮😮that’s a huge rail yard…and more to add
The yard is coming together even if very slowly. I understand how monotonous laying track can be especially if you have a lot of tracks in the yard. I also understand how frustrating it can be when you have to redo it because of some unforeseen event. I'm very interested in your layout and it will be awesome when finished one day so keep the updates coming I enjoy seeing your progress. 👍
Thanks! It became a lot easier to keep at it once I got the main line done again. Half the time when I was stuck on an idea, I'd just run trains around the layout and relax and then something would pop into my mind. I hope to have even more done in the next week or so. Thanks for watching.
Same here. Its really inspiring me as much as it is thoughtful.
Wow that’s a lot of tracks. Wry cool
Bummer the wood shrunk, and messed up the track
I suppose it's good that it happened this early on, since I now know what to do if it happens again in the future when I'm further on in my layout progress. It was easier to fix than I initially thought.
AARGH! Humidity. I live in the south and I know the issue well. You sorely need two portable style dehumidifiers with 1 or 2 HVAC effluent pumps. Two units is crucial because most portables will die in 3-5 years. You nned overlapping protection (but you know that now) ☹️ The ops rolling stock is easier. Bowser makes plenty of PRR rolling stock kits. Decent opened but not assembled kits are all over eBay for $20 including shipping. Easy to slap together, and perfectly good for ops. Load up!
Yeah the dehumidifier I had my family has had for 40 years so it definitely gave everything it had and then some. Hopefully I can find another one that lasts even half as long. Up here in the northeast the humidity isn't too bad besides July and August, but of course that's when I decided to lay the track. I suppose it's a nice problem to have-- needing lots of freight cars. Same with engines. Luckily if I remember correctly Bowser has another dozen of uniquely numbered H21a hoppers coming this spring and some boxcars too, which will help me put a dent in my freight car buying needs. I have a few of the kits, they're really good. In fact I think they run better than some of the RTR by other companies.
@@pennsylvaniamodelrailroad I'm a transplant from SE PA with time on Longuyland and in Ohio before wondering south. Your weather assessment is just like I remember it. :) Not even new $500+ built-in whole house HVAC vented system humidifiers or dehumidifiers last over 7-10 years these days. The less expensive but more versatile (and only choice if you don't have vented HVAC) are ~$250 for about 600-900 sf areas, and might last 5 years. I had an basic portable electric oil radiator heater and two portable dehumidifiers raised over one basic $40 vertical pump for several years. Worked great at 40-45% humidity. The oil rather than electric resistance heater kept things warm w/o drying everything out - the other extreme. When one portable broke down last year, I was in the midst of walling in my PRR layout area and workshop room. With the rooms now cut off, I added a $1500 Mr. Cool 12k self installation heat pump, giving me heat, air conditioning or straight dehumidification on demand. I can turn it on before leaving work and it's perfect by the time I get there. NOT CHEAP, not easy. But a world of difference. PS - Please don't wait on new dehumidification. If initially invisible mold gets into the Masonite, wood or models, which it will, your whole layout and all your models are trash. Now that suck!
Have enjoyed your videos for quite a while. The Decapod is a really nice addition. I'm hoping to have my own Pennsy layout operating before too much longer. Like yours, it will be primarily steam with some 1st gen diesels. I'm not going to try to model a specific locale, however. If all goes well, there will be a video series inspired by you and other RUclipsrs. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep it going!
Looking forward to the changes. Please don’t make us wait another 10 months. Lol. 314 subscribers now.
I haven't touched the layout since this video but I have to relay half the yard because the dehumidifier died in the summer and the homasote got so swollen that once it shrunk, it pulled the rails together so badly there's kinks every foot or so. Got so humid the wood door wouldn't even shut. So that's probably where I'll start, it should take me about a week and then I'll at least have a video of trains running. Since I still have some work to do.
Sorry to hear about the swelling. I know you don’t want to hear this during the problem but have you considered cork? Cork is more stable and doesn’t take up water. It might help if god forbid the next dehumidifier takes a crap in the future.
@@derekalexander4030 I use cork where I have the mainline, but since the homasote is just compressed paper it can swell a lot and then shrink. In the past I've mainly only laid track in the winter time and I didn't run into many issues. Now that's it dry once I re-lay it it should be fine. It might also be how I lay track. I put spikes outside the rails, if I just put them down the middle it would allow the ties and rails to flex more rather than being pulled together when the homasote shrunk. Luckily the first 5 tracks have no issues. Just the next 4-5 I have to re-lay.
8:30 ref. for my fave.
Very cool! Wahooo, new decapod! I love me some Pennsy hippos. Hope to get one myself some day. Been looking for your next installment, so thanks.
You could stick staging levels underneath the coal mine and tyrone. That's what Ken McCrory did and it worked out pretty well
I thought about it but in order to keep a 2% max grade it would take 8' to get the track down under Tyrone which would cut into the scenery in Tyrone a lot. The upper level I'm just sneaking behind the coal mine lead, which doesn't take much space luckily.
Nice! Hope you post more often and show what you're doing. I'm like you, I've always liked steam more than diesel but I like 1st and some second generation diesels just as much. Steam locomotives are by far my favorite type of locomotives though. The expansion you've done and are going to be doing looks and sounds awesome. I've never been a fan of Pennsylvania Railroad but they had a lot of interesting models of locomotives both steam and diesel and I find I'm more and more interested in that aspect of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Southern Railroad is my favorite I guess because I live in the southeast and my first experiences with trains was a Southern Railroad steam locomotive. Keep the updates coming. Stay safe. -Wil 👍
I like first and second generation diesels too. I like most 4 axel diesels but GP-9s are probably my favorite along with F units. I like the Southern Railroad color scheme a lot. Thanks and stay safe yourself -- Tyler
Nice to see you back….converting all the way to steam, wow…that 2-10 sounded great…how’s the pulling power of steam engines up and around horseshoe curve? That’s gonna be awesome yard when completed
Thanks! Yeah I always liked both - steam and diesel - but I thought I would never have a big enough radius to really do steam or the roundhouse to do it justice. Now that I changed the yard I have plenty of room, and I bumped the minimum radius up to 22 on the whole layout which let's me run almost any steam engine. The pulling power seems really good, the engine has the rubber wheels for traction and it's pretty heavy. I haven't tested it pulling much yet but the m1b can pull 15 or so freight cars up the curve and that one doesn't have any rubber wheels so I'd imagine the 2-10-0 can pull 20+. I'm tempted to speed match them and run double headers up the curve, both with the smoke units running. I can't wait to do that, it will probably push me to get scenery done on the curve.
@@pennsylvaniamodelrailroad We have the same aspirations but you are so so far ahead. I've wanted to recreate the 'ore train' with four decs. Apparently so have many others. I'm sure you've seen all the vids. Looking forward to your Steam on Horseshoe Curve series.
@@gonebamboo4116 I may be a little ahead but I'm probably not too far ahead haha. I still have 50+ pieces of track to buy and half a dozen switches so it will be quite awhile before I have all the track laid. When it comes to scenery, I'm even slower. But I enjoy it and I'm glad you like my videos.
I thought you quit RUclips! The new yard is a real improvement. And looks better too. I received my hippo a bit over a week ago - short tender. There's a warning not to run the smoke burner w/o fluid. And on mine, the switch is underneath on one side near the front. Apparently there's a CV too.
Thanks! I had gone back and forth with how I wanted everything to work, so it took me all summer to figure things out. I hope to buy a short tender hippo at some point too. I just recently heard about the warning, I just have to find where the switch is.
@@pennsylvaniamodelrailroad It should be underneath near the front of the loco.
@@frankhellman6879 thanks, I'll be sure to check it out. It's probably my favorite engine overall. I love the sounds especially.
Very much like the scenery around Horseshoe Curve. I think you captured the general look of the mountains around the Curve very nicely.

I thought there were 4 tracks?
There were, I just didn't have the space for 4.
Pardon me for a question if you don't mind. What is a good source for detailed info on BLI locos? Ex. Markers light on K-4s but not I-1sa both in Paragon 3 form. I have a L-1s on order. Have seen reports very as to wether they are jewel or lit. Just getting into ho from SE Asia
I have no idea actually. I think the only BLI locos I have are the M1s, and they were built in the early 2000s I think, so I don't even have a very good instruction manual for them. I got them from 2 people who were both getting rid of their layouts because they had to move. A model railroading forum like cs.trains might be able to help. I'm kind of in the same boat when it comes to my locos. I'm still trying to figure out how to get a replacement air horn for one of my F units.
@@pennsylvaniamodelrailroad Okay, thanks much. I'll keep admiring your layout from afar.
Now if BLI will just upgrade their hippos a bit and do another run. I'm saving up for all I can get. You've inspired me.
Thanks! I really appreciate it. I'd love some hippos too, but I unfortunately don't have a wide enough radius for them. I used to have a J1 but had to swap it for an M1b since the J1 was a little too big as well.
@@pennsylvaniamodelrailroad Yea, I saw that M1 sitting there, was imagining it chugging around on fully decd. layout. I'm really encouraged by your post, thanks much.
Absolutely Awesome! I was smiling and grinning the whole time I watched this. You must be even more excited. Thanks for posting and looking forward to all that come.

I was thinking of who I hadn’t seen a video in a while from...your channel came to mind and I realized I didn’t get a notification of your last two videos. How’s the expansion coming along and the mountain scenery around horseshoe curve? Anthony
I ended up getting burnt out when it comes to model trains, because I spent pretty much every week of 2019 working on the layout. I've had a bunch of non-train hobbies that have been eating up most of my time this year, but I have them to where I want them so hopefully I'll get the itch to work on trains again this next month. Thanks for checking in.
PENNSYLVANIA MODEL RAILROAD I understand that....I went about 6mos not working on mind before...it’s a hobby and your building the layout for your enjoyment. Will be on the watch for return.
