Fantastic update, Tyler. It's really nice to know how your layout operates. I really like the way your track plan is a continuous loop but, because of its design, it looks like trains are going somewhere and coming back. Thanks for sharing your layout with the rest us. ...Roy

Thanks Roy, I appreciate it! I have a lot of fun just running trains. Sometimes I spend a little too much time running trains and not enough time working on the layout haha.

Excellentooking layout. Altoona is my favorite place along with Harrisburg to railfan. If I had the room, I'll do Altoona in the Conrail era. Lots of operations and you need to film some of the sessions! Keep it up and have a great Christmas!- Joey

Thank you! I love standing on the bridge in Altoona that sits right over the east end of the yard, it's a really nice place to railfan. I like the Conrail era too. Something about those blue engines always looked so nice. I hopefully will have some videos of my operating sessions eventually. I won't have any this weekend but probably in the future. Have a Merry Christmas too.

Hello! I found your channel from Roy Smith,I’m super excited to find someone else modeling Altoona & beyond. I’m modeling the curve & Altoona and a representation of the tunnels. I’m more compressed than you are but I was my plan to build a layout depicting my favorite railroading area.

Thanks for checking my channel out! I love Altoona and the Horseshoe Curve area, so that's awesome. You'll have to post a video someday of your layout. I haven't found too many people on RUclips who model the curve.

Saw your video on Roy’s channel and had to look you up.
Fantastic layout in the time you have had to accomplish so much.
I am familiar with your layout area since I live about 7 miles from the Horseshoe Curve.
Will try to view your other videos and monitor your progress.
Looks like you have a nice space, but in the hobby it seems a modeler could always use more.

Thanks! Roy has been a big help to my channel. The layout itself has been a blast to work on. You're definitely right, when I was working on staging I kept thinking "all I need is one or two more feet of space and I could make staging twice as big". Thanks for subscribing.

My trains only derail when friends are over too. That always happens with me!!

I luckily can't have a head to head crash on the mainline the way my layout is designed but on more than one occasion I've had 2 trains quietly become one long one with a mid train DPU.

@@pennsylvaniamodelrailroad lol... now that's a smart railroad. I've had suicide to the floor crashes ( installed railings since) double derails (first mainline derailment caused 2nd main derailment) and head on disasters...all bad but I've learned alot

Very nice Tyler! Always love PA based layouts! (Mine's the Lehigh Valley, Bethlehem to Packerton ... very loosely.)
How much staging do you have? It doesn't look like much. Do you have to physically assemble each train by hand to send it onto the mainline?

    • @pennsylvaniamodelrailroad
      @pennsylvaniamodelrailroad  4 года назад

Thanks! I like the Lehigh Valley too.
I have 2 tracks for upper staging and 2 tracks for lower staging. Since my trains are about 12-15 cars long and I don't have extra rolling stock, I assemble them by hand. Basically I have my drops in the front when I leave staging, so I just pull some cars on to the tail, push them back over the switch and do that 2-3 times to reorder the train to make it seem a little different. Then I pick anywhere from 4-8 cars in the front to be dropped off in Altoona. Generally I pick up about the same number in Altoona. I only have car cards for cars that are being dropped off in the yard since the other 8-10 cars just go staging to staging. That way there's less paperwork. The staging tracks are double ended so I can couple an engine at either end and have a helper engine if I want to.

@@pennsylvaniamodelrailroad I gotcha. I do similar with my thru-cars, just lumped together at the head end of the string of cars. But since mine are in a 4-step car forwarding system, they only spend two of those steps in yard-to-yard transfers, and the other two either going to or coming from a modeled industry, so I still have car cards for them.
As your rolling stock grows and/or the number of trains in a session increases, it may be worth your time to look into something like removable cassettes to have fully ready trains ready to go in staging. A little bit of work making the removable cassettes, but less time assembling the trains during sessions with the ol' 0-5-0 helper. And the cassettes can be stacked on a shelf or cabinet out of the way. If you're pressed for space and don't want larger permanent staging yards, that is.
