Mulch (clean garden straw) around my strawberries brought slugs and pill bugs. It didn't go well :-(
That is unfortunate. I would definitely recommend a different type of mulch. If you have slug pressure try using plastic mulch during the growing season and a frost cloth during the winter. Hope this helps.
You could put a line of crushed eggshells around the bed, it'll deter slugs and snails from crossing.
I have watched several posts about bottom blossom rot. And I coming to a conclusion that many are making it up as they go. I have put in different varieties of tomatoes in same bed and the bottom rot is only occurring in one particular variety, which is the same as the one in this picture eg the heirloom type . 🤷🏽♂️
You are absolutely correct. Heirloom tomatoes in my experience and by some research are more susceptible to BER than hybrid types. The growth habits are and nutrient requirements are slightly different. It all comes down to soil prep and watering as the main cause. I still grow a few heirlooms just for taste and seed saving. What types do you grow?
@ with tomatoes I just keep seeds of store bought tomatoes that I like . I’m in Australia , I think the best ones I grown are Gross Lisse , some Cherry tomatoes and some Romas . The only ones that got some BER were the Heirloom type . All in the same bed .
My cucumbers a having a lot of flowers without fruits what can I do to have fruits
It’s not uncommon. But depends on a couple of factors. What area are you growing in? How old are the plants? A plant (depending on the variety) will throw male flowers early on then start produce female. It gets the pollinators coming to to plant first. Secondly if the air temps are above 90+ They have a tendency to produce only males.
Worse fowl noises I witnessed and I like most fowl but those
They are loud. Luckily they have room to roam.
Me and my brother and dad was just discussing this where can i buy?
They are produced by Bonnie. I think they are only selling in Home Depot and Lowe’s. I’ve only seen them available spring season. You can check Bonnie’s website to see if you can get more info. Good luck. Let me know how it goes.
Did you also build a ladder to reach the top of your trellis?
You took the weight off before it the pressure naturally released??? That’s not safe I noticed other things you did. Not cool!!!!
Great idea! Can’t wait to try these!!!
1- cheap excuse 2- cheap excuse 3- kind of an okay excuse 4- and 5-? I didn't stay that long!!
Very helpful thank you
My cattle panel trellises have been working great for years in my small backyard I tried one like you have there and the wind took care of it, once full grown its like a sail!!
"You wake up and you gave gigant gapeing holes" I think someone stabbed you and there is no slug
What is bt and can I use it on grape plants ?
It is a naturally occurring bacterium that you can find in local nurseries. It is completely organic and disrupts the digestive system. It works in a wide variety of garden pests. Good luck.
And yes. You can use it on grape plants.
Great info
I’m glad you found it helpful.
😂 I have several in my backyard garden that I put up by myself and they work great. They aren't the only trellis system that works but they were cheap and easy to build and are very effective.
Im growing my Cucumber hydroponically on my porch it’s gotten huge but I’ve only seen 2 female flowers a ton of males. It’s eating a lot of nutrients. I’m just learning about gardening thanks for the video.
I’ve never canned tomatoes. I have a late plant here in Wisconsin just bearing fruit. A boxcar Willie (heirloom). Watching it carefully due to our temps getting cooler. Also we’ve had the issue of not enough rain. Thx for the info!
What species of wood for your frames? Cedar so they don’t rot? Or do you just make new every year? Thanks, Tony.
If a flower falls off a female cucumber after pollination will it still grow?
I like to get the skins off.
Nah, your argument that they're hard to move doesn't work, they are very easy to move. In fact easier than your thing. Both sides also get sun, one side in the morning and one side afternoon.
We put our X on the bottom. Seems to work a little better. Also, we blanch 2 mins. Thanks for sharing your video!
Im new to growing cucumbers and I don’t know exactly what to do with them they’re growing slowly, it’s the third month and im supposed to get some harvest from them i guess but this is the first week of them flowering, the problem is all of them are male flowers, also all the leaves started having these yellow specks some turned brown like they’re being eaten by something and some died they browned from the side of the leave , also a couple of the leaves that are green got a pale-ish white vien in them.. i was this close to giving up until i saw this video , you gave me a bit of hope , i need to get me some neem oil !
Those look like my purple Hull peas. My black eyed peas turn yellowish when dry. Would it be the same for Purple Hull and Black eyed peas?
Yes it would.
You call those tomato plants? Nggremore
I am in NE PA, zone 5B. It has been extremely hot all summer. I am growing 2 Black Beauty eggplant from seedlings in 5 gal pails with Miracle-Gro potting mix, M-Gro Plant Food 18-18-21, every 7-10 days. Potted on June 10th.They would be coming due for harvest in few wks. They are on an elevated deck, away from garden soil. The fruit looked great for a while. I had 12 healthy eggplants on each. When they were small, I used Sevin dust to get rid of flea beetles. I don't see signs of insects, I've covered them with garden fabric every night since after using the dust. The fruit have suddenly stopped growing. All the fruit on one has turned pale, but no rotting, no soft spots, or BER. They are all hard as a rock. In the last 2 wks, I've fed both 2x with a liquid high phosphorous fertilizer (Miracle-Gro Quick Start to see if that helps. It doesn't seem to be getting better, but ir's been very hot here, so I started keeping shade cloth on them during the hot days. The other plant's fruit looked like it would make it, they were still deep purple, but now I notice they are also starting to look pale. The majority of the fruit are size of a baseball. One on the healthier plant has turned light brown. I cut it open and it is unripe, light green, but yet healthy looking. The plants are a normal height, about 4.5 feet, and still starting new fruit. Am I missing insect damage? Disease? Is it the heat, maybe too much sun? Has to be sun & heat, right? The stems look perfect. How can I get the fruit's color back and get them to keep growing?- Thanks!!!
I loved this video. ❤❤❤I have to learn how to prepare tomatoes, to can, and any other ways to preserve my harvest. 😅
I got three 16 foot long cattle panels home no problem with my first generation toyota tacoma. 6 foot long bed. I did not bend them. You can buy these things called roof racks that go on top of the pickup. Something you would need anyway to get that lumber that you are using home. You just have to put a red flag on the load that sticks out (check your states regulations) If you can't pound a steel T-post into the ground you should just not go outside in the first place. I am a 5 foot 7 inch 125 pound human with a crooked back and I have no problem doing this and my soil is trash, full of rocks. treated wood in the ground only lasts 3 or 4 years in my climate. Concrete on soil then treated wood is the only way to go. Digging the hole for the two post would be more work than necessary. my cattle panel designed greenhouse does not need power tools to build. You need a miter saw to cut those 45's and not everyone has a miter saw No reason to be a dick about it. You could have just showed people what you did without the insults. the cordage wont last long. it expands and contracts with moisture levels and with the sun, heat and cold they will go bad in a couple maybe three years. quarter inch galvanized steel panels will last decades. You failed
You and yours are the best ML&R
Miss you guys. Trying to plan a trip down in your area. Let’s get together.
@@bellesbackyard3264 most definitely just let us know would be great to see y'all
When you pick them not quite ripe do you break the stem off?
Yes. Great question! It is best to leave a small part of the stem attached. Especially if you are picking them very early. That part of the stem does play a role in its shelf life and allows it to ripen a little slower making it ripen more evenly.
Thank-you for the video. I am an amateur gardener from New Jersey (zone 6b). Your video addressed my main problem of cucumber plants producing a lot of leaves and flowers, eventually turning yellow and decaying without producing much fruit. I plant Burpee Straight 8. Are there other varieties you suggest? I use miracol grow to feed. Does that supply all the nutrients needed for a successful crop? You mentioned several nutrients. I grow my cukes vertically on a fence. Is it necessary to disinfect the fence after the growing season or will the Northeast winter kill viruses and disease?
Hi. You may want to try a self pollinating climbing cuke like the Beit Alpha and the American slicer. For a non-organic general fertilizer Miracle Grow is fine. I wouldn’t worry about any thing remaining on your fence. Most reoccurring diseases will be in the soil or carried by bugs. Thanks for the comment. Good luck.
lol saw this thumbnail and knew the comments would be epic. 😂 However, you forgot the factor that trumps all potential issues: because my wife really wants an arch.
That does trump everything! Hahaha.
That's a great trellis design. I did not have any of the trouble you mention but I used hog panels. I used 6 hog panels which are more narrow because my 4 beds are 3 foot x 8 foot, in 2 rows. 4 panels in the bed and 2 of the panels span between the beds.
My cucumber has male flowers no females yet and we had tropical storm Debbie and basically kilt off my male plants and the females haven’t even bloom yet wats do I do
Depending on the type of cuke. If it is an open pollinated, your non seedless type, you might be ok. Typically they throw all male flowers at the beginning of growth then throw a mixture of Male and female. You may have some male flowers on the way. Just be patient and see what happens in the next week or so. Good luck!
Is the soil you used in this video also good for tomatoes, okra and beans?
It is. I would only add 1 tbs of soil acidifier to keep the ph around a 6.5-6.7. Good luck!
Thank you!
Wat do I do if the males die off before the female even opens up im in zone 8b and had a lot of rain
Good
Thanks
How to control whitefly without chemical, at large scale
Sorry sir but you are wrong! Cow panel are excellent and I grow same thing in same spot every year!
Of course! Use your advertiser while debunking all other idea😒
I noticed when I watered to much when I was first starting, I got blossom end rot. The moment I stoped watering as much have not had it since. I did a lot of those recommended fixes that you spoke of. Nothing worked. Just watered less…same with damping off. I had a major issue with this when I first started seed starting. I almost gave up because everything was dieing. I figured it couldn’t be a disease. What are those chances? I stopped watering as much and fixed my problems. I was able to save a lot just by putting it in dry soil and stopped watering as much.
What is organic fertilizer made from? What are the ingredients?
Good idea, but how did you get those 2x4x10's home?
I planted bush champion in my garden bed and it got to 3 to 4 feet tall already.
@@mikehill9078 Wow. That’s tall. Are you trellising them? Good luck.
@bellesbackyard3264 yah with just 1 string per stem. I planted 3 and each has 2 suckers almost as tall. Wondering if its a differnt seed in package.
Is the Neem oil a cold press?
I have been growing cucumbers for several years this year the baby cucumbers there like blossom end rot all black not developing I cut them off plant looks great just picked 16 cucumbers but over half of babies are affected any ideals? Loved your video very informative
Heh,,, that's what she said.
not only is it the best parthenocarpic, indeterminant cucumber, it's the best stage name for a male stripper EVER!!!
Had to start harvesting tomatoes shortly before fully ripe - bc they were getting nibbled on by animals at night. (Can't blame them, they're delicious.) I was skeptical, but gotta admit they do ripen beautifully on the window sill!
Surprisingly, I found that the nibbling was actually being done by birds looking for moisture. I placed a bird bath near the garden and it made a big difference.
Not a great argument, I think you should have said is that cattle panels don't work for you! The points about transportation are exaggerated and as the comments demonstrate many people have no issues with getting cattle panels home and installed . When planning a garden you always look at the path of the sun, so why would I install cattle panels in a way that shades my plants? I do like the fact that you are open to counter opinions. Best of luck with your garden.
