Finding Inspiration (Not Envy) On Strava

As a runner, I find myself regularly on Strava, sharing my journey and following other runners and athletes. But recently, I've found myself falling into the hole of comparing myself with other runners. I really resonate with the line "Comparison is the thief of joy" and so I've recently been trying to change my relationship with Strava to use it as a source of running inspiration and running m...

Can 60 Days In The Gym Make Me A Stronger Runner?
Amazing man!
AWESOME!!!
Thanks for the bird's-eye view on your journey, James. Always relatable, inspiring and interesting. Cool stuff 👍🙂
Beautiful. You could get sentimental for less 🥲 Perfect choice of music!
Thanks Kristoffer!
Very informative especially for those new to the sport. Thank you.
This video brought tears to my eyes James. You've been such an inspiration to me in my own running journey. Watching your tips videos, and the races you do - I absolutely love your charisma and love for the sport. Your videos and editing are so well done and expertly crafted. May your journey be one filled with adventure and good health. Keep going James!
Thanks! Really kind of you to say! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Super Inspiring Journey, James. 😊
Thanks Danny!
Love your content James! I am hoping to run my first ultra (probably 60k) in 2025. Partly because of your videos and the motivation I get from them. I hope to run a sub 3.30 Copenhagen Marathon firstly though. Are you running that again? If yes let me know so I can come and say hello ;) I need to cut off 10 minutes of my PB from last year though. Not sure whether it is possible or not but with a lot of MAF leading up to the 16 weeks of specific training, I hope I will ;) Do you upload your training programs anywhere? Cheers and happy new year
Thanks Casper! Good luck with your first ultra! I'm sure you'll love it! I'm not running Copenhagen this year but it's an amazing course for a fast time! I don't upload training plans anywhere but I do post my training on strava. If you're looking for some templates, I would recommend Ben Parkes training plans on his website. Different plans based on your goals and not too expensive.
elite level plodding sir
Cheers Rob!
Thank you for making videos, James! Your videos have always been among my favourite on this platform. Nowadays RUclips is overrun with people trying to make running into a full-time job and their videos reflect that; many people just stick a camera in their face and record themselves rambling. Your videos however, which this video also highlights perfectly, are much more focused on the joy of running in beautiful places, the philosophy behind running, and the connection by sharing the journey with other runners. It gives your videos a feeling of authenticity and inspires to go out and explore rather than merely focusing on pace and time. Best wishes in the coming year(s), and I am looking forward to many more race videos!
Thanks, that means a lot! I've got no plans for this to be my job and the thought of this being my main source of income isn't very appealing. But I'm really enjoying making videos and really want to be able to make higher quality films with better storytelling. So hopefully you continue to enjoy the videos as I experiment and try to improve!
Very cool james 🎉
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing your journey!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Congrats on the achievements, James !
Thanks Simon!
happy days✌🏼
Yeah some great memories!
You are inspiring in your fight for the 100 miler here in Great Britain I think you are doing so well. Inga dk
Well done JAMES, it was awesome to watch you run this race so hard and challenging too. I think you did it the right way, and completing is nearly not to understand, congrates from me. Inga dk.
Maybe really protecting your eyes and maybe ski glasses. inga dk
I will highly sugest that you wear glasses for your next race if you race in Sweden again its a very windy route, Inga dk.
Yes the consequensy of such a brutal race is often this by the imune system and thats just a fact but really nailed it at last and having the two swedish guys to chat with was great for you too. I think you did it great out there in the cold James.... congrates with the ring and the result....Inga dk.
Thanks never thought to use the Garmin pacepro feature will be trying that next time out
Well done on completing a very tough race! I did my first 100k in May this year. First 58 km very lonely - couldn’t get chatting with anyone. At the aid station I wanted to go home but decided to keep going. As I left the aid station I got chatting to a guy called Andy. We walked (he was injured, I was knackered) and chatted for the next 13km and it saved my race
Great recap, already thought that I had already seen the Kullamannen one, but still nice to hear the story after contemplation. I would recommend you to to come to Finland and run NUTS Ylläs Pallas organised in July. The 200 miler is a bit extreme, but the 160km one you'll see the best parts!
Come to Bornholm. Hammeren Ultra will give you challenge and beauty.
Well done for finishing that beast, James. I love running but I'm a fan of being able to see and eat too 😂😅. This one is not on my bucket list...
Haha I totally get that 😅
Absolutely smashed it James. Great reflections. One to avoid I think 😂 Too dark for too long but hats off to you 🏃🏻♂️🏁
Thanks Michael!
Yes, you missed beautiful views. It’s so beautiful on that coastline. Good work 💫
Definitely! Will have to head back some day for a daytime lap of Kullaberg!
Welcome to our home race kullamannen. It's a different kind of race :) and yes the trails are very nice during the day to
Thanks! Yeah, I will have to return for a daytime loop of Kullaberg!
Mental! Maybe try a 5km now 😅
Haha I've got some shorter races planned.
Always interesting to hear your post race reflections!
Thanks Kristoffer! Hope you're well!
@ I'm well thanks, God Jul och Gott nytt år!
Really interesting and relatable - thank you. There seemed to be a load of road running (or at least hard-packed trail). What type of shoes work for this? I didn't get the impression you were crewed, and you didn't mention foot issues, or drop bags (with shoe change options). I am generally fine with the mental side, but (for example) the first half of the SDW100 hurt my feet, and I could see this going the same way!
Thanks. There was quite a lot of hard packed trail but this is very weather dependent. We had an unusually dry year, but the forecast a week out did have snow and rain forecast. Last year they had a lot of rain so the route was super muddy. I went with Nike Kiger's which would have been my choice even if it was more muddy. I had spare shoes but didn't use them. I've never been crewed and prefer the idea of not having a crew. I did have foot issues in the last 20km with the downhills but luckily it was the end of the race so I could just battle through.
Very inspiring
Thanks!
The eye thing is crazy, Courtney Dauwalter had the problem where like 90% of her eye sight went
Agreed. I don't understand how you could run with it in both eyes. I spoke to a few people who had to drop out for exactly this reason.
Got something big in mind? Like a UTMB or Bayswater?
I'm starting to think about longer term goals but not sure I'm ready for the elevation of a race like UTMB yet. Definitely want to do more 100 milers but need to decide on which events.
That eye problem must have scared the 💩 out of you. Glad to hear it recovered OK. Can safely say I won't be signing up for this race but I enjoyed your videos about it 👍
Haha yeah I don't think I'll be returning to run it again but glad I survived!
Keep it up! Big inspiration for me!
Thanks Emil!
Bit of a silly question, but where is your red/orange hat from? Looks really cosy and I'm looking for just that for a winter race 🙏
It's a old Vans beanie that I've probably had for like 20 years. It's definitely seen better days but I'm a big fan of using gear until it completely falls apart.
@jamesday1 nice, thanks for letting me know and good luck with your next adventure! Hopefully it will be a bit gentler 🤣
Pretty insane to have no food on offer for 7 hours of race (longer for the slower runners), especially given it's a loop section aaaand they had food later on.
Yeah agreed. I think the event are pretty up front about this but it's definitely something I missed when reading the instructions.
fair comments that reflect my experience too. what it lacks in vert it makes up for in other ways. being happy running trails at night with a head torch is a big advantage. it is clearly stated in the race guide that most aid stations are liquid only. come over to Sörmlands 100 next year for a more Centurion experience.
Yeah the night time running is a big one. Totally agree that the event are up front about the liquid only aid stations but it's something that I missed. Luckily I planned to use only my own nutrition but I saw others who hadn't properly prepared for it. I just had a look at the Sörmlands route and it looks like a great point to point. Is the terrain similar to Ultravasan?
Quite similar actually. A lot of roots and rocks in the foresta which you hit at night making it slow going. There was a little too much gravel/road but they are planning to change that which would make it even better. I'm planning on going back.
Enjoyed your videos alot, cheers. Trying your luck for utmb?
Thanks. I would like to do UTMB at some point but probably want to build up to an event like that. I definitely don't have the leg strength right now.
Great breakdown. Sounded like absolute hell 😂
Thanks! Yeah it was definitely a challenge 😂
Hey mate, what hilll that are big enough did you train on?
What an incredibly well put together video. You’ve condensed the equivalent of a thorough book on the topic into a half an hour! Well done 👏🏻
I have never been so proud of some one i have never met! Inspiring stuff, thank you for documenting!!
Love your content man, ive been a casual runner for the last couple of years. But decided I want to get into ultra. Got my first Marathon in Brighton next year, then hope to do a 50/75k in-between that and taking part in this 100km in 2026! Your content is really motivational & .inspiring! Thanks.
Congrats!! Also, red carpet finish -- fancy! 😄
This was excellent. Signed up to my first marathon in May and want to progress to an ultra in the years to come.
It’s amazing you still have the energy for making content during this gruelling race. Well done
Hi James...GREAT video..👍👍 I ran the race as well and barely managed to finish the race in 31 hours struggeling with just reaching the cut-off times...🙃 First +50K was very tuff due to weather condtions so really great that we did not have to struggle with strong wind durning second half of the race. Turning 60 next week it's a hard fact of live that you loose power each year once passing your prime but if the joy of running remains it's definately a race to consider..🥳 Regarding fuelling at the aid stations Kullamannen/UTMB Organizers must be able to improve. Simply not good enough that they state Näak products are available and when you turn up it's not the case. Because of similar experience @Kullamannen last year I brought plenty of extra gels this time around but talked to several other runners struggeling due to lack of fuelling. Should be obvious that it's equally important for 'cutt-off runners' to be able to obtain proper fuelling. Merry x-mas to all runners and hopefully we can look forward to some great running in 2025..😎
Very good advice, especially for beginners
as a beginner, i wish i did do research and spend money on some good shoes. i recommend maybe $100 to $150. you don't have to go buy alphaflys as a beginner, but you should learn your feet. do not just go out there without researching, and in cheap shoes, that will result in a bunch of shin splints and other injuries. get a gps watch, not an apple watch. compression shorts, vaseline, headphones, phone, heart rate monitor, shades.
