Well done James - brilliant achievement! You must be so pleased with yourself. Really enjoy your channel and looking forward to the next one. Well done - Gav
I completed my first 100 mile ultra marathon in October last year. Your training and goals sound very similar to what I went through, and from what I saw in one of your previous videos, your race times are a little faster than my personal bests. With all that being said, I think you're setting yourself up for success. I was able to complete my entire race in great spirits, dancing and smiling at every aid station, finishing in 22 hours. My biggest suggestion would be to include as much variety as possible in your training run nutrition. It took running a 50 miler for me to find out that the foods I was content with over a slow 20 mile run eventually became completely unappealing. Good luck!
Thanks Michael! Realy useful feedback. I did a 100k last year and had the same experience. Began to get really sick of gels towards the end but luckily had crisps and other more solid options with me.
You will smash it buddy. Look to complete rather than compete and find that nice easy pace from the get-go. Try and get a heap of runs through the night so the body becomes attuned to that glorious 1am to 4am period. Long training runs and the event will be as much an eating contest as a run and that is what will see you to the finish line. Have your plan A and B and C if solid food doesn't work on the day or part way through. Other than that and all the right training you will need a good crew who get you out of aid stations properly refueled and if you are allowed a pacer at the end they will keep you moving. Good luck with the training.
Thanks Shaun! I hadn't thought about training runs through the night. I'll have to see if I can plan some into the training! All my focus is on the 100 now. Back from my holiday now so just need to get the volume back up without developing any injuries.
Good luck with your training! I’m doing the Big Way Round too. Have done one of their events before and they’re always well organised and well sign posted. Enjoy!
Ahh excellent! Hopefully I'll see you there! I'm looking forward to it. I ran the marathon route last year as a training run so looking forward to doing the Ultra loop. Which distance are you doing?
@@jamesday1 Yes the 50K too in prep for the 100K Race to the Stones this summer. Delighted to find a Monday bank holiday race as struggle to make weekend ones.
Great, come and say hi if you see me there! Good luck with RttS. The threshold events look great but they've always clashed with my other races or plans. I would have loved to run Race to the King when it finished in Winchester.
Sound like you have planned things out well. SWD100 is my wish list too and what it to be my 100miler, perhaps next year. Best of luck with the training. Looking forward to more updates.
Looking forward to following your 100 mile journey, I’m hoping to complete my first 100 next year. Out of interest, what camera do you film on whilst out on your run? Thanks
Thanks Richard! Good luck with your first 100. I currently use a GoPro hero 9 and record in 5k. The file sizes are pretty big so I upgraded to a Mac Air to handle the editing but the image is pretty nice for an action camera.
Good luck with the training. I like using the train so that I can do linear runs. If you can’t find a 50 mile race could you get the train to Amberley and run home or vice versa? Just a thought.
Best wishes for the 100 miler! What an epic challenge. I don't know if this applies to you regarding weight loss. But I've been continuously gaining and losing weight the last couple of years and tracking it with myfitnesspal, I've tried to decrease my base calories to see more progress, down to as much as only 1500kcal a day (then adding training calories and steps on top of that), but seen less and less effect from it. Then I decided that I wasn't going to try and lose weight anymore and instead just focus on maximizing training volume, so setting the base calories back to "maintain weight" with about 2100kcal a day plus training and steps, and whaddayaknow now I've started losing weight again. I think there's some science saying that if you're in a deficit for too long the body adapts and down regulates your base calorie need, and so upping the calories along with good training actually makes your body adapt in the opposite way by increasing your base calorie consumption again. Could be worth trying if you're on a deficit and still hitting a weight loss plateau 👍
Thanks Kristoffer! That definitely is the case for me. I haven't been tracking until recently but when I described my diet, the nutritionist said I was underfueling. Then I would get super low energy levels and over-compensate over a day or two by eating junk food. I've dropped down to around 72kgs already so it seems by eating more on a consistent basis, I'm losing weight 🤷♂️😅 made sense once someone explained it to me! I feel like once I get bellow 70kgs, I'll need to re-evaluate as I get through the quick wins.
Interesting insights in your preparation. Are you doing additional cross training like strength straining and cycling? According to your weekly plan there is no rest day. What's your experience with this and how long do you trained according this plan?
Thanks! I do some strength training but probably not enough - a mix of core, weights and mobility. Removing my rest day was a bit thing for me. I'd always had at least 1 day off running per week. I was expecting my body to really struggle without the rest day. I probably ran for 2/3 years with only 1 rest day and when I went to running 7 days per week, I barely noticed the difference. It was pretty surprising how much it didn't affect my recovery.

Thanks Gavin! Yeah, super happy with how it went.
Also doing it as my first 100, James - finishing and enjoying seems like a really sensible A goal! See you out there!
Very cool, hopefully I see you there! Good luck with your first 100!

@@jamesday1 interesting, thank you. If one all year has more or less the same volume the body seems to get adapted after several years of running.
Welcome back 😅
Haha thanks Phil! Really enjoying being back on the trails!
