So nice to hear from you again James!! Yeah totally understandable all your fears and doubts and hopes and anticipation and joy all rolled into one! I remember those feelings of fear for my first 15km, my first 18km, my first 21km, my first 31km, my first marathon, and soon my first 50km which is the day after your 100miler!! I know that none of those even compare to what YOU're about to do but I'm sure you've been through your own progression and have been through it before... it's all relative!!! Just wondering, AFTER your first 100km (not during)... did you ever feel that it's not for you, that you had no desire to achieve even more?? The truth is that just getting to the start line is already a massive achievement and probably more than a younger you ever thought yourself capable of!!! So yeah it will be fun AND horrible too, and certainly everything in between at one point or another. "Pain is inevitable though suffering is optional!" It's taken me many years to understand that quote, and I'm STILL working on it!! 😁💪🏻🏃‍♂💪🏻🙋🏻‍♀

Thanks Bev! So I think the 100k felt like a big achievement but I always knew I would finish before it went dark. So I never had this uncertainty of running for hours through the night on no sleep. That is definitely my biggest nervousness about SDW100. And that's probably the element I'm not sure I will enjoy. But yeah, running 100 miles is a massive bucket list event for me so I'm super excited as well. I've enjoyed all my ultras so far so hopefully I'll just be out there enjoying myself.

Ohhh gosh I must admit that I hadn’t truly thought about the psychological challenge of running thru the night, especially already exhausted… certainly demands a whole other world of mental toughness. My second ever marathon was held with a 100km who were returning as we marathoners were heading out, so we had the opportunity to applaud them within their final 21km … I can’t tell you what inspiration that gave us and put my own pain and suffering into a different perspective!! So next Sunday, I shall remember what you just did the day before James!!! Sending you my very very very best wishes for the big day out!!!!

Fantastic place to run with the quiet roads and the forest tracks and the great weather

Agreed Michael! The first road section is one of the first parts of the South Downs Way coming out of Winchester.

Amazing run yesterday James. I was at the Washington aid station and said hi. We had quite a few drop there, the heat killed the race for tons of people. Brilliant time. Dan

Thanks Dan! Really nice to meet you and thanks for saying hi. I was in a pretty low moment when I arrived. The heat was unbearable. For the two hours after seeing you, I really struggled with stomach issues but had a second wind once it went dark. The support from the aid stations was amazing and made a huge difference so thank you for volunteering! I think I was completely absorbed with keeping moving when I saw you but it definitely improved my mood talking to you.

I have every faith in you James, you've trained hard for this. The main thing is to toe the start line and try to enjoy the experience. Definitely a bucket list item that's for sure so try and remember that when it gets hard, you have put the hard miles in during training, this is your huge victory lap. Enjoy it and really look forward to seeing the video. x

Good luck, James! Sounds like you've put in the hard work. All the best and I look forward to checking out your video. I'm actually travelling from Australia to see family in Devon soon and have managed to find an event called the Tsunami Ocean Trails, which finishes in Bude. I'm doing the 25km event, and am really looking forward to running along the north Devon-Cornish coastline.

Thanks Damean. That looks like a great event. The coast paths down there are beautiful. My sister used to live not far from Bude and spent a lot of time on the coastal path down there. Hope you have a great holiday!
