When I’m circulating in an area waiting to catch a subject I frequently check my wrist watch then look around as though I’m searching for someone I’m intending to meet. Add a frustrated look as though they are late and that usually puts people at ease.

Good tips, but I think it all depends on your goals and the specific situation that can vary scene to scene. So your method needs to be adapted in real time to your goals. For example, I prefer getting up close and personal, even doing street portraits. This skill set is radically different than being an invisible creep lurking in the shadows. When I’ve engaged people personally, the camera size really hasn’t mattered at all from a GR3 to a Canon with a 24-70. And I can get the same non-personal shots with any camera as long as I’m not walking by them and shoving a camera in their face or taking pictures of their kids. I’m not saying never be discreet, just think there is too much unnecessary paranoia being spread across RUclips with how to do street.

Am Ende dieses Videos kam mir dann der Gedanke, dass ein unauffälliges Verhalten recht schnell auch mal zu einem äuußerst auffällig unauffälligen Verhalten geraten kann, sollte man dabei beobachtet werden. Vor allem, wenn man sich krampfhaft darauf konzentriert und sich in all das Mittel- und Unmittelbare, das man am Körper mit sich herumträgt, verheddert ;-). My favourite methods for street are the no finder (not even the tilt screen, as I find peple notice it as well), and the Garry Winogrand thing, looking like figuring out something with camera, often checking the focus ring (use mf lenses the most) back and forth turning the camera at me in between the shots

How to be invisible while obviously taking photographs: bring a "model" with you. On the surface, it looks like hou are shooting the model but you are really photographing unsuspecting subjects. It also catches attention and subjects will look right at you as you photograph them. More often than not, people will approach and become willing subjects for street portraits. Works like a charm.

I love and have used MANY of these techniques, but I hadn't done that lately, so I like it. I'll add one more. Have you ever seen how Garry Winogrand did it? He looked like he was having trouble with his camera and fumbling with it, and all jiggly in his hands without even looking through the viewfinder, snapping away. That's one I use sometimes. Just looking incapable. ;)

My photography has always been all over the place for almost 20 years I just don’t care if I’m invisible or not when my revolving door of photography gets a itch for street photography for a few months.

Matt Stuart, a famous street photographer, makes no attempt to be invisible: he obviously takes a shot, but when he does he then looks at the top plate of the camera with a baffled expression on his face, shakes his head, and just keeps walking.

This approach to vintage digital equipment is really cool. In this video you indirectly mentioned several reasons why some photographers have chosen to experiment with shooting with old digicams nowadays. I am one of those who loves shooting with compact cameras from the 2000s.

Thanks for a great video Oliver. Subscribed. I agree with your point about the need to socialize with other photographers. Two years back, I moved to Singapore. In the first year, I spent time on the streets alone and I really enjoyed that time, most likely due to the novelty of being in a new country. Then the yearning for conversation with like-minded photography enthusiasts kicked in and now I am a regular member of a local photography group.

I really like your saying that having a good time even if you didn’t take a great picture. I consider street photography a relaxing and stress-relieving activity that allows me to escape my stressful job for a moment. I truly enjoy the moment rather than focusing on getting a good picture when I am doing street photography. Of course, it’s pleasant to also get a good photo, but I won’t pursue it.

Great tips! I tend to just go out with the intention of capturing whatever catches my eye. It's been a bad strategy for many years now. Often times I won't come back with anything. Instead, if you head out with a theme or idea, then you are bound to be more aware and capturing great images.

You are right about concentrating on one genre at a time. Photographing everything usually leads nowhere when it comes to progress. On the other hand if photographing everything gives joy then why not?

Nice one. Its great when you capture and create a great photo.... but its not greater than capturing it. There lies the fun, the challenge, the experience, the act of photography. I love it. Everything else is secondary. An athlete enjoys every mile of his training as part of an end goal of perhaps one day a medal.

I don't see anyone else on the street taking photos.

I totally agree with the point of what matches YOUR needs. I have the Sony A7iii and it takes amazing photos. Is it fun? Well, it doesn't scratch the same itch as my Fujifilm X-T5. Why? Because I fiddle with all the dials on the X-T5. On the Sony, it's tricky enough that I fall back into SOME version of auto, and for ONLY my point of view (not the world), I'm out there to interact with the device. But that's me.

Thank you for sharing this in-depth experience. I've enjoyed taking pictures with many cameras for a long time. I loved the Ricoh GRD, GR series, but seeing the current Ricoh and Fujifilm craze and crazy price gouging, I started seeing alternatives. I immediately signed up for a subscription. It's beneficial and enjoyable to watch and listen to videos.

Well done for creating such a good presentation - it will benefit Turin and us street photographers. I would like more cities to see photographers on their streets as a real plus.

IMO, it's not just city marketing that benefits from giving a sense of location. Myabe, I am slowly mutating away from street photography into a travel photographer, but generic street photos that could have been taken anywhere become boring very quickly. I mean, how many silhoutes stepping and people stepping into lightpockets can we actually find interesting?
