Simply incredible, thankyou so much for sharing all this information. I am building my first guitar, I have minimumal woodworking expereience, and very high expectations (bad combo). I've spent months planning and figuring out how to appraoch it. I recently got access to a laser cutter, and now I've 3D modeled the guitar I'm building using most of the techniques you've demo'd in your videos. I'm trying to make my first build as straight forward as possible, and templates are the key.

Great review! Had me sold... Jim passed away last year, but thankfully his wife has decided to continue with limited production of Jim's creations. Just plunked down for one of the Luthier versions, even though I plan on using this machine for thickness sanding more accurate sheet thicknesses for my model train and model ship building projects.

Fantastic alternative to the rope-style jigs I've seen used. I haven't yet glued up a top of my own, however in the building class I've joined previously I've seen students use the rope jig. It seems cumbersome and some students have struggled getting it to work properly.

Shoulda used a longer shank insert tool and used the drill press as a straight guide and hand turn the chuck

interested in the saw. I am using a big table saw, and would prefer to ditch it. it is only used for fret slotting.

Suggestion: I use threaded insets for all kinds of stuff, and I tap the coarse external threads. For your necks, you could tap the neck threads using your drill press manually ( just to keep the tap perfectly plumb/square w the surface. I use a few drops of CA glue when inserting the insert. This all allows for just an xtra .001” or so around the insert - it’ll still be very solid but you avoid the risk of the inserts cracking the butt of the neck w seasonal humidity changes. I had that happen a cpl times so I started tapping them first. The coarse tap you’ll need is not common but wherever you get your inserts should be able to fix you up. I got mine from both Grainger and McFeely at one time or another. Try it - it also makes the insert go in like butter, no chance of a slip that could damage the neck.

That would have been nice to have a month ago as I was burning up boards on a disc sander. Do you have any brick and mortar( I'm in Denver area) or just online?

When I put steel grommets into guitar necks, I just put the insert bit into my drill press and (obviously with the power off) use the perfectly vertical pressure from the press and I turn the chuck with my bare hand. The other fantastic feature of the steel grommets are if you use four recessed neck ferrules instead of a plate, it's much easier to find metric bolts of various lengths, or even cut a longer bolt down. It's much more difficult to find the short wood screws necessary for a tapered neck heel to keep the bolts from poking all the way through.

The adjustable pocket template can be accomplished with three pieces of mdf taped to the blank around the heel of your neck lined up to the center line to the line drawn for the scale length. The route (tweaked with tape) will match that particular neck. I use a cheap laser to line the neck up with the blank's center line.

great job! i need to do this to my strat with striped wood screws.... anyway you could ditch the nut driver and chuck your home made driver into the drill press, spin the chuck by hand while putting small amount of pressure on handle for leverage.... a little wax and they go in dead straight every time...

I very, very much appreciate these videos for their expertise, however, anybody contemplating their very first guitar build would likely never set foot on that path having watched this series. Sometimes, you just have to have at it, and be damned with all the jigs. You just have to give it a go and learn from your mistakes.

At 22:00 Steve could use the special tool he says he doesn't like by setting it into the chuck of his drill press - the perfect perpendicularity of the alignment is still assured from drilling the original holes! - and then start turning the chuck by hand while gently pressing down on the plunge handle of the press. Most drill presses are designed to allow such hand-turning of the chuck...

Question regarding planing the neck blank down to the desired thickness - I don't have a planer, but I do have a jointer. Would that also work to get it down to the thickness I want?

I just did a belly cut and forearm bevel with an orbital sander Works really well

You don't really need perpendicular holes. You need co-linear holes. So drill a smaller pilot hole thru both the body and neck. Then drill at the needed diameters

Great to see decent engineering principles being applied to an age old problem. I think Leo himself would've approved. Would be interesting to see if unplugged resonance could even result for the couch surfers amongst us.

What would be the best way to round over the edge after you make the cut? Would it done by hand?

I like the clean-ness and uniformity of your templates. Mine all look terrible, (either baltic birch or MDF) but still work, but would be nice to have some of these. Great job
