With much respect Steve. A little word about sanding Abalone. Wear a mask. Once in a while fine, but if someone is going to do this often the dust is a silicate and over time might cause lung problems. Great series though, learning a lot.
I use those hole saws a lot to make holes in fixtures to press in bearings , straight out the package they make the holes usually a few thousands oversize which makes for a sloppy fit . I mount them in the drill press and at the lowest speed setting I use a file and barely take a bit of material off the outer edge of the teeth and that makes the bearings fit much more secure in the bore . Maybe doing that for that 12th fret hole saw would make for a really snug fit , I did notice in the video it moved around a little .
You know...that is a great point. I own three of that size hole saws...and they are all different. Honestly, I was showing how to think outside the box more than anything...as I generally now use a CNC to cut my rings. I appreciate your input...that is a great addition to out of the box thinking.
I came up with a design while on "vacation"...you can see it on the Coming Soon page of the website. There is even the ability to pre-order there at maximumguitarworks.com
@@maximumguitarworks just checked it out on the website, very cool. I noticed the radius hold down jig as well, almost think you could incorporate both designs into one jig…

I really appreciate your altruism and empathetic sacrifice to demonstrate the use of a lighted magnifying visor. In the world of smart phones, people say "I've got an app for that." In the lutherie world, you say "I've got a jig for that." A couple questions, if you don't mind sharing. Do you use Aspire for making your radius blocks? Do you get your bulk dots from Rescue, and just regular shell blanks for your 12th fret rings? Great video AGAIN!
Thanks Ira...you are using some big words...but you are correct! I have used Aspire before...but now I am pretty exclusively using Rhino and RhinoCAM. I like the options, precision, and ease of use (once you learn how to use it). As far as the dots go...I buy them where ever I can find them. I have to make my own 12th fret markers from raw material. I'm still trying to find what I like best for the material. I really like the synthetic opal that I have used...but it is expensive and I have to order larger quantities. Making my own 12th fret is not too bad.
Wondering if doing side dots with your jig first then using the side dot location to measure and mark for top markers using a square would be easier. Would that not make sure everything is aligned?
Thanks Steve, another excellent video. Please put my name on your list for a fret marker jig and a 10"-16" sanding beam. No rush, as I'm sure I'll have something new to add as you get ready to ship. Thanks again, its a pleasure learning from you.
Thanks Randy. Only need 9 more people interested in that new and improved version of the side dot drilling jig...almost there. I'll send an invoice for the sanding beam...for whenever you are ready...no rush.
$75 plus shipping for any radius. Email me at info@maximumguitarworks.com I can send you a PayPal invoice. Working on a click to buy system right now...hopefully that that up and running soon.
Those Abalone inlays are sexy as hell. Full color looks great. I might have missed it. But is the 10-16 block a 24 or 18 inch? Also.. what are "styles" of templates do you have? Have you done any Ibanez style?? IE" wizard necks etc??
Yeah, you probably missed it. I talk too fast sometimes...but it would be a longer video if I talked slow! I make the compound radius blocks 20"...to just fully cover the fretboard for a short 1" sanding stroke. Although I can make any radius and any size (up to 24")...but 20" makes sense for a compound radius sanding jig. Forgot to mention in the video...but 20" also makes a great clamping caul!
@@maximumguitarworks Actually the speed that you do this at is fine. I was a bit distracted by my granddaughter while I was trying to watch this. I should have watched it again. So thanks for clarifying. You didn't say if you do/do not do/have? Anything in templates outside of fender style guitars?
whoops.. I have several variations of Strat and Tele style guitar templates. I do custom ones for people too...with all the same safety features on my standard templates. Recently I did a tele neck with an Ibanez JS1000 headstock for a gentleman. A full special request guitar template set would take me several weeks to produce. I like to do the work...look at it again several more times...maybe even some test cuts...just to make sure everything is correct. I just need access to the blueprints or specs to make them if trying to make them similar to an existing guitar. Feel free to email or call (info found on maximumguitarworks.com) if you would like to discuss a specific idea. Thanks.
I feel terrible. I love your videos and I would love to buy all your templates and jigs but they are prohibitively expensive for me and I live in Ireland, so thats a double whammy. The reason I feel bad is that I have had to steal your ideas to make my own templates and jigs. The only thing I really need that I haven't done yet is your compound radiusing block from this video. I feel like I am in the confessional here, I hope you can forgive me!

Great episode.
Thanks Wolfgang...I appreciate you.
Steve, you do impeccable work my friend. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Saubere Arbeit👍👍👍
Thanks Frank. I had to look up that translation...for a second I thought you were cursing me. ;-)
Once again, excellent! The sanding blocks are amazing! Thanks for making the block of my dreams!!
Thanks Mike....my pleasure!

I’d definitely be interested in the side dot jig Steve…count me as one of the 10
I have you on the list Rich. I'm going to work on a design later this month...see how it goes.
@@maximumguitarworks Please put me on that list as well

I ordered 2 of these sanding blocks. They are perfect in every way and they smell like Rosemary and Lemon!
ahhh...I should be talking about the smell...it is very nice. Only the best for you Todd!
I’d be. Interested in buying one Steve .

Are you talking to me about the headlamp? I have a set of those! They are crucial for the blind among us! Like me
If the magnification headlamp fits.... ;-)
I need the side dot jig. count me in.
Right on Ross. That is 4 people...I'll probably start working on an improved design this month.

great video, what is the standard radius on a Strat? - cheers from Canada
“Modern” is 9.5…which has moved to 10 in the last decade.
How can I buy one of your compound radius blocks please
how much for the 24" sanding beam?

Topologically, a ring with any sort of thickness is the same thing as a coffee cup. So no, a ring is not a circle.
Thank you. But is a cube square? So many questions...so little time.
A ring can be considered to be a circle.. but a circle cannot be considered a ring.. hahahahaaaaa..
Thank you Robert...I had a real dilemma on camera! ;-)
