Player Piano Revival Episode 16: Realizing the Vision
Sir I take my hat off to you. You appear to be a pretty young guy and it blows me away that you have obtained so much knowledge and experience already. What a craftsman you are!! I have really enjoyed this series. I learned to play on a player piano when I was young. The player part never worked and as a young kid I used to explore and play with the various bellows and other moving parts wishing I could somehow make them work. The work you do and this video series has made me so happy and brought back so many great memories. I thank you so much for that. If there’s anything I can do to help support your continued work please let me know.
Wow, I didn't realize that you have to take that much off a player piano to repair them. I have a 1906 Sterling Player Piano. I was thinking on having my grandson repair it. He is a mechanic & feels he can repair it. Of course, it does need a thorough cleaning & blowing out of the dust. I know I will need some replacement parts which can be ordered which he pointed out. I really think we can do this. I am watching your video for the first time. Questions: Is it necessary to remove everything? Is there a site we can go to that gives step by step instructions? Do you have any recommendations? I sure would appreciate it if you have time. I paid a guy in 2022 to tune the piano. He never came, so I lost $640.00 and can't afford to pay again.
Woaw... its like synthesizer but old school...
This beats modern karaoke by a mile. Thanks!
I love it! ❤
Glad to see you post this. It seems gems like this one that are rarely found go to new homes and are never seen again.
Judging by the lyrics on the roll, this predates karaoke.
Jazz!
I love this!
The thing I don't understand most about piano rolls is why they designed them to scroll backwards.
My grandparents had an old Foster & Co player piano in their basement (which still works!). Once the extension on our house is finished, I'm planning to have it refurbished and moved into that new space. Part of me was thinking about trying to refurbish it myself, but this series really set me straight 😂
This sounded awesome Nate - not sure how you mic'd it but the tone on this player is superb, with rich base. Nice one !!
Nice to see its still around!
Nice music, I dont know why but youtube has ben hiding you from me. I finally spotting this video and dinged the bell icon to get notifications. 👍
You're fine! I just posted this less than an hour ago.
Nifty! I'm still working on my 1916 Pianista - I hope it sounds as good as your 1917 one day!
What kind of glue did you use on the pneumatics?
I have had two players, one rubbish and one that was really great quality. The latter was a joy to pump. I wish your videos were available when i had the first one as i think i would have risen to the challenge of restoring it. A cousin of mine had one and completely overhauled it. He did a ver good job too. This was about fifty years ago. Thank you for reminding me of the fun i had.😊🇬🇧
Hi natte I have a question do you Sell player piano parts 😊
Hal Roach talked about making this, and they'd destroyed the wrong house
I saw this picture years ago and loved it then. You're music and timing are superb. Loved every minute of this.
What a delightful experience! Totally fasciNATEing content!
Heh! Thank you!
I look at that home they drive up to and realize....back then, that was a new neighborhood!
The bubble jar stuff is kind of fascinating.
That was a wonderful video to watch! My grandfather was a movie theater piano player during the silent film era in Montreal, Canada. Though he had passed away long before I was born my father often talked about his father working at the theater and as a young boy he would get free passes to go in while his father was working. Lovely to see and hear! Thank you so much.
Yoooo I recently was given a 3 rank style 109 Wurlitzer so we good lol
they're as funny without being heard🤣
Ivory replacement can be so hard sometimes due to the grain, color, thickness, and shape of the chunk
Great fun. Thanks.
Bravo! I'm a theatre organist who accompanies silent films. This is brilliant but I don't work quite as hard as you do. Excellent job! Keep the history going! Thank you!
What I lack in skill I make up for in effort. Thank you!
Those guys were, and still are, amazing talent.
There's nothing quite like 'em!
Great work! The music and effects fit the film very well.
I can't imagine where you even found a Fotoplayer to restore. I've only seen one other. But my exposure to them has been limited to RUclips.
They're still out there. I'm very lucky to have come across this one.
That’s the first time I have seen the full Big Business short. Earlier this year I had a few old family 8mm movies digitized. To my surprise, right in the middle of our vintage weddings and Christmas celebrations, was 3 minute reel of Laurel & Hardy’s Big Business! I have to think it was a favorite of my grandfather, but even my dad can't remember. 😂
As a fan of silent comedies and just moving pictures in general, this is the most delightful and fascinating thing I've ever seen. Thanks!
That's very kind of you, thanks! I enjoy sharing it with others.
Thanks so much for the video. Really enjoy it. Wishing you the best in 2025❤ you in Michigan 🎊🎉
"Someone used a door frame to remove it" haha you're funny bro
Under the C haha that's a good one
When Stan is tossing the chair out the window, it has a price of it on the bottom, $40.00, as well as the item number! I can't believe the amount of ceramics trashed in this movie! But when Oliver hit the officers foot....
Excellent restoration and a great treat. Nice to see James Finlayson in an early Laurel & Hardy short like this.
This was ridiculously, completely insane! And I laughed heartily! Merry Christmas to you too Nate!
lovely work .
I'll forever be a huge L&H fan. This was real treat! Thank you.
Great job Loved it. Happy new year
A masterful performance, very well planned, demonstrating the capacity of the Photoplayer to enhance silent film - and a much more appropriate and enjoyable accompanyment than that issued on the DVD restoration
"Big Business" has always been my favorite L&H short. Watching how you performed the score was amazing! As much as I have always loved player pianos, I never realized that the Fotoplayer had 2 readers so you could switch between rolls! How cool is that! And I thought that the projectionist, with the 2 projector change over system, was kept busy! You are a true talent!
Well done a lovely few minutes entertainment. Thank you for your passion and skill.. Have a good New Year.
That was great. Changing the volume when it showed the officer in his car was absolutely golden. Excellent restoration and film!
It's fun to push the limits of the machine (and my timing). Thanks!
Love your vids Nate. Happy new year, keep them coming 👍🥳
I don't comemnt as much as I'd like to. Or even respond to Facebook messages... :/ But I have to tell you this is awesome. I'll be honest, I've never had the attention span to watch silent movies. I did give this a try tho. I have to assume you know this film. You're already aware of what's gonna happen. Like the tree hitting them in the head. That said, this took some time and dedication and that I can appreciate very much. Well done my friend and best to you in '25.
Hey there! I'm new to the film, but put together and practiced this routine a handful of times before showing it to an audience. By the time of this filming I had run it about a dozen times. Even still my performance is never the same twice. I'm really glad this got your attention!
Wow Nate, that was something else. This side of the pond we don't see Fotoplayers, so nice to see one in action. Here's wishing you & yours a very happy new year.
