Tips, tricks, and tutorials for voiceover artists and audiobook narrators at any stage in their career.
When I was starting out, and at many points in my career, I spent far too much time, money, and/or stress just trying to figure things out on my own and then wondering if I was on the right track. So here are all of the things I wish I had known sooner, some of my brilliant ideas, my spectacular failures, and everything in between. With any luck, they'll help you out in some small way.
In case you're curious, here's a bit about who I am:
I'm a professional voice-over artist, audiobook narrator, and actor with over 15 years under my belt, six Best Performance of the Year nominations, and quite a bit of training (NYU, MFA Acting). I've also worked with some pretty cool companies, clients, and collaborators like BMW, Netflix, Microsoft, IBM, Samsung, McDonald's, Ragù, Spotify, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Audible, Penguin Random House, and Bayer, among many more.

Narrator v. Dialogue: IMPROVING Your Audiobooks Easily | Subscriber Feedback #51 (ft. Dharma)
Hey Jay! You don’t mention ACX as a place to find jobs. What are your thoughts about ACX as an avenue?
It’s great! Particularly as you’re getting started.
This page aply to Venezuela??
I’m not sure! If you have access to the website then I’d imagine so
2 months later, I'm back at this video because I've been struggling with trying to maintain an open throat and lifted soft palate when inhaling, and your exercise helps with that openness, with no effort required. Thanks!
please excuse my ignorance, but in the end you say you already have a video on regions/markers/the region&marker manager, but what is the video? not sure if this was removed? or is titled under something else?
Sure! Here are a couple for you: -ruclips.net/video/aRALdg7u3eY/видео.html -ruclips.net/video/FbKzxSf2mfo/видео.html -ruclips.net/video/gXECinwcCVw/видео.html
@@jaymyersvoiceover thanks! i would have def gotten to these videos eventually (as i've been binging a lot of your videos), but based on the titles, i would have never guessed to check these videos for the region/marker manager. love your videos
This video is very helpful for me to understand audio compression much better. Thanks a lot for that. But I think you explained the concept of radio wrong. It should be that whenever the volume exceeds the threshold by the set number of dbs, one db gets compressed, not the other way around, as you said in this video.
Yup! Thanks. Other comments have noted that too. I just flipped them in my head mid explanation.
@ Thanks for your reply. These concepts are mind-boggling. You are a wonderful teacher. I have saved several of your videos for convenient review.
:)
Can i use 2 microphone on that?
yup!
I'm going to buy a sE T1 for my voice over career (I'm doing mostly youtube-related works, but with a usb mic). I really like the sound of it. But as a gift, i'll buy myself an RE20, I love how it sounds
Nice!
Oh man, such a big one. I always talk about how I used to do auditions for video games all the time and it was always like "Soldier #3" and I'd have seven takes of them dying in different ways: gunfire, raygun, fire, explosion, etc. And my voice would be toast. Then I ran into John Dimaggio recently and brought this up and he's like "Oh, yeah, I just always said I'd only do those on Friday, if ever."
I know the feeling. 😮💨
This is really helpful. In trying to make my default monotone more "dynamic," I've overcorrected to cartoonishly emphatic. Now I see I need to spend more time with the script consciously choosing what deserves emphasis rather than letting paranoia about droning be my guide. Thank you for generously giving your time to help random strangers on the internet.
Quick question: when it comes to adding style tags on your demos, do you think it's best to use all ten slots? Or only the ones that MOST fit the style of your demo? Just wondering how that affects the voice match system. Like, if a client is looking for "charismatic + funny" and you have those two plus eight others labeled on some demos.... is that going to negatively affect your voice match scoring? Hopefully I'm making sense here!
Great question! It won't hurt your matching at all in my experience or understanding. I would just avoid selecting items arbitrarily or to hit more styles for the sake of it. Always make sure that the things you DO select are at least somewhat represented in your sample, and if you're missing styles make note of it and record a demo for that purpose. :)
Thank you so much I needed this!!! Mr jay.
Any time!
Thank you, Jay! I discovered your channel today and I'm excited to watch all that you are sharing. Have a great day!
He looks like Tom Selleck. 😂
Indeed.
I'm new to your channel but I wanted to take a moment and say thank you for these videos. The information you have provided is invaluable
You betcha!
I kneaded this! Thanks
Haha 😆
Hi, How much gain did you apply on the TLM 102 sounds great!
I don’t recall to be honest. But peaks were around -6 to -12db. 😊
I just booked my first ACX book and I love this so much! I’ve gotten into the breathing anxiety trap. I love the idea of making an audiobook more like a friendly conversation rather than a performance that you have to agonize over. Thank you!!
Congrats!! That’s great. Happy recording!
Great advice here! A+ tips. Thanks so much.
You betcha. 😊
I understand that you want to monetize, but there are way too many commercials.
Thanks for the note! Generally I try not to let mid-roll ads happen because I hate them too, but RUclips tosses those in automatically if I’m not careful. I’ll see what I can do about getting them to tone it down. 😊

@@jaymyersvoiceover Thank you.
Any advice on characters that are yelling? I have a scene aboard a ship during a heavy storm. The story, by the way, is for a video I am making. I plan on adding audio behind the story, lightning, wind, rain, etc. Should I actually yell or talk loudly by backing off the mic, or should I use a sort of fake yelling (I can't really put into words what I mean exactly.) You're not really yelling but speaking in a way that suggests yelling.
here ya go! ruclips.net/video/BB6KSyj3ijQ/видео.html
@@jaymyersvoiceover Dang dude! That was quick. Thanks much. Watching right now.
Of all the voice-over videos i've watched on YT, this is by far the most impactful and useful. What you've given here is pure gold!! Thank you for gifting your knowledge!
I would recommend taking off (unchecking) your fade in and out. That’s going to be affecting your RMS levels, especially on the short headers. You only have .5 second of tone at the head, and 1 second at the tail, and that’s the same value you put for your fade.
Thanks for the note! Yes, with short headers turning fades off would help RMS for sure. Alternatively, changing the fade to a steeper curve would also help as a compromise if you wanted to keep them. That said, if folks still wanted to use them for longer chapters, there won't be a practical difference to the RMS values with fades on or off.
Tip #4 about handling voice change throughout the day. I was concerned about that very thing because my voice variations are extreme. Thanks. Your advice about handling that is helpful.
Glad to hear! 😊
Thanks Mr. Myers.😊
👍
For longform voiceover, I’d probably go A, D, C then B
Nice!
I've gotten to meet Mike! Hes great at audio production. Got see him and several other vas during a nosleep podcast live performance
Nice! I bet the live performance was great.
I have the Rode NT1 5th Gen, Focusrite Solo 4th Gen, Monster XLR dual shielded cable and my noise floor is around -60db. I started with the Audiotechnica ATR2100x, didn't realize when I first started that it had so much more noise than I thought it would.
Nice!
Can you somehow increase the playback speed so that you can make faster progress when editing?
Yup! In the main "Transport" there's TEMPO. By default it's set at 120, and you can simply change that to 200 for example to increase the speed of playback. Just be sure to set it back to 120 before you render or record anything ;)
@@jaymyersvoiceover ooh so simple is that ? :D thanks :D
The TLM grates your ears over time, Shure has a far superior high end. Owned the TLM for years and had to give it up because of that tizzy high end.
😉
Hi Jay Myers! Jenn Meyer here! We just bought a house and after considering a lot of options I’m looking into getting a studio bricks one plus booth non VO edition. They come with the bass traps now. Wondering if you had any issues with the floors & creaking and have any floor related recommendations. Thanks! 🙏
Haha look at that! Pleasure to meet you Jenn Meyer! Good to know they come loaded with bass traps! If you mean the floor of the booth, I haven’t noticed any issues. If you mean the floor of your living space, I live in a building where the structure is primarily concrete I believe, so no creaking, though reverberations tend to travel well. The booth does a good job isolating those for the most part, but a heavy foot or door slam can make its way thru. Hope that helps!
@ thank you! That helps. It’s going over vinyl plank in a pretty level home that’s on a concrete slab. I heard from some people they needed additional foam for creaking so glad to hear you haven’t had that issue!
The hand measuring trick is awesome. I'm going to make sure I use everytime before I begin a recording. Thank you for sharing your tips!
🫡😊
You have a very pleasant voice mister... Being a visual person I always thought I would never find a narrator who could make me enjoy an audiobook, now I would have to rethink
Very kind of you to say :)
Sorry that I'm late to finding this video. Thanks for the shout out. Reaper is the best.
Late? Nah. And thank YOU! You helped me find my feet in this whole VO gig in many, many ways-truly and sincerely. I send folks your way whenever I can, but if anything else pops up where I can help you out, just let me know.
Wow, this is amazing. I hope you do 1 million more of these.❤
Very enjoyable read!
😊
Hi Jay! I've heard a lot of contrasting opinions on whether it's okay to make a demo with brand names if we weren't actually the voice for that brand. I've also heard to not make a demo with past work. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks!
Good call! and eh, it depends. My thoughts in a nutshell: 1) If you're worried about it, you can simply change the brand name, or just not use the spot or name. 2) As long as the ad has already aired and isn't under NDA protections, you're probably fine. 3) For demos in my experience folks don't mind what the text is more often than not. Once your career is a bit more established, you could shift to spots you've actually voiced to demo your work if you wish. I'm not the presiding authority on this, but that's my take. :)
@jaymyersvoiceover I appreciate it! There's so many people that say you can't do this or can't do that, it gets overwhelming as someone that's mostly starting out. Appreciate your answer!
@@isabelleb826 I hear ya. Speaking from experience, a VAST majority of the time nobody cares as much as we think they will, so even if worst case scenario we make a mistake or breach some 'taboo' it rarely something to get tied in knots over. ;)
Thanks Jay, good callouts, and Carries' performance was really excellent!
great vid Jay! really enjoyed it
hi Jay great tips, but I'm a bit disappointed as I was hoping you will actually recommend a few brands and models. So I'd like to ask directly for your advice. I do voice over recordings with some music mixing. My best monitoring headphones ever - Sennheiser HD202 - are slowly falling apart, so couple of years ago I bought what I was told is "the next level"- Sennheiser 200 PRO that replaced the discontinued HD202 - and got a rude shock as they are full of so many frequency holes and have a shorter range to the point of being UNUSABLE for my critically trained ears. What have they done?? I have since tried several other brands and models - nothing even comes even close to the crisp, clear, natural and centered sound of my HD202. Another issue is that anything with impedance higher than 16 ohms is frying my super sensitive brain (stronger EM as they pull more power), so I'm stuck. Are you able to recommend any brand/model that meets my criteria? Grateful for your reply :-)
Hey there! I’ve got a few of the models I like in the description of the video, though 16ohms is a fairly limiting spec in terms of recommendations I can give. I’d recommend reaching out to Sweetwater if you’re in the US and explaining what you’re looking for and they should be able to help you out better than myself to get EXACTLY what you need. :) Good luck and let me know what you end up going with!
@@jaymyersvoiceover Thanks! Yes, I'm considering DT770 32 ohms - I would need to try it for few days to see if I can use them at all. I am in Australia and unfortunately, here, once you have opened the box and used the headphones, you can't return them unless they are faulty. I'll keep searching. thanks!
@@quantumliving88 Gotcha. Those are a great pick either way! Hope they work out for you. :)
Wow, I finally understand after 5 years with my compressor, you taught to use my output wave form on my transmitter and how to properly set up my compressors. Cant thank you enough
How do you leave a marker for a certain voice? Thank you
Depends on the software you're using, but usually it's just the hotkey "M" on your keyboard.
Amazing advice, Jay! I'll get to work on my on slider!
I am gonna record an audiobook in a semi truck on a macbook pro and I don't have much space to store equipment. got any advice?
Don't record while driving. ;) You'll probably want to use a dynamic mic like the Shure SM7b or Rode Podcaster. If you want hyper specific recomendations for your budget/environment/goals, I'd hit up Sweetwater directly and chat with one of their reps--they're awesome.
what about if you are recording a audiobook that is over 125 hrs long?
1 hour or 125 hours, it's all the same.
I've watched a handful of other videos that meet the guidelines by adding effects and compression and a bunch of stuff I'm still trying to understand. You have a completely different approach that looks way simpler, just putting in the numbers on the render window. Do you ever mess with the effects and plugins to meet the specs or is this the best way? Also, if you need to get your noise gate down some, do you do that through a noise gate prior to rendering or do you have another trick when you're rendering out the file? Also, you are a wonderful teacher, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks so much for the kind words! The short answer is this is the simplest way, but not necessarily the best. Using plugins like compression, EQ, expanders/gates, etc. will likely yield a better overall recording, but those can require lots of training to get right and are very situationally dependent-so the video is mainly in the interest of offering a simpler and more universal solution where folks can dial in their processing individually.
Sir I am using audacity.please acx setting that daw
ACX actually has a plugin available that helps hit ACX specs! forum.audacityteam.org/t/solved-where-can-i-find-the-acx-plugin-to-download/63513
great video. i wish someone would do that for recording on garageband in ipad.
Ah. I'd help you out if I was more familiar with GB. :/
Nice. I love Reaper. I have been using it for the last 7 years or so, and have never been back to other applications.
Yeah, it's great!
Great video as always Jay. When you listen back to your recording, do you do it chapter by chapter? Or do you record the entire audiobook first, and then listen back to the whole thing for mistakes/sound issues?
I record the entire book first to keep a flow, but either is great 😊
