    Regarding Charles Dance's pronunciation of, Magdeline: In each of the English Universities of Oxford and Cambridge you will find a Magdeline College. One is pronounced similarly to the way you pronounced it; the other is pronounced as Charles Dance pronounced it, "Maudline". In common usage your pronunciation is always used. "Maudline" is ONLY used for the old College. I guess the pronunciation is used in the show simply to sound antiquated, but it could be associating him with the College, I suppose, though I think that's less likely.

    The meaning of the name Tenma depends on which kanji are used to write it. When used as a name, Tenma usually means something like Heavenly Horse. Tenma is a flying horse similar to the Greek Pegasus, which was the name of the flying horse that sprung from the open wound left by Perseus decapitating Medusa. Tenma is also, as you intimated, the name of a demon who tempted Buddha. Tenma’s job is to prevent good works being completed. The kanji are different, of course, so we’d have to see Dr. Tenma’s name written down to know which meaning should apply, but heavenly horse is usual for a family name.

    33:25 yes chaos theory does say that but homeostasis tries to balance it out as per the episode name. When the tried the Lotto 6, changes (though very small) were there but homeostasis made it so that they couldn't win the lottery even if it was a human error

    My understanding is that Dr. Tenma was head of surgery. The Director of the hospital may have instructed him to operate on the mayor instead of the boy but that was over the phone; he hadn't seen the patients personally. Dr. Tenma is well within his rights to ignore the director on surgical matters. He had personally seen the boy and the X-rays and knew what the operation entailed. He judged himself to have the best chance of saving the boy so he did the right thing. Remember also, when Dr. Tenma was ending his phone call with the director, the mayor had just landed on the helipad and was being taken to the MRI or something. The extent of his surgical requirements was not yet known. It might have been a simple thing a first year student could perform or it could have been more taxing. The point is it was unknown, whereas the boy's surgical needs had already been assessed. As the director said, the success of the surgery depends greatly on trust between those involved. If the director can't trust the head of surgery to make a call like that, then what was he thinking when he appointed him? I understand what you are saying about the extra funding allowing them to save more lives but there's no reason to think they would lose that with the mayor's life. His successor might even be grateful to the hospital for opening up the job for them and give them more funding lol. The point is that losing funding is not a certainty. If the extra funding had been announced it would be very difficult for the new mayor to change that decision without a lot of people asking questions and making things awkward for him. All the hospital needs to do is to rename the operating room in honour of the mayor who died in it and the new mayor kinda has his hands bound. I can play politics, too lol.

    Tenma made a decision as an individual and it is his responsibility. The institution is there to diffuse responsibility and be arguably inhumane if it needs to be. He has to take on board both the good and the bad of his decision because it's just that, his decision as an individual. If he had acted merely as a member of the institution, whether or not it's the right call is ultimately not his problem. Were it a matter of merely another individual demanding he save the mayor, that would be different, and his decision could be argued to be a moral one. The institution itself, everybody knows, needs to triage and resource allocate. It is an expected function of the institution. It is not a decision for individuals to make. Where the decisions of the institution are questionable, there are likely proper channels he could have gone through, though they may well not have worked at all, but nonetheless. To disobey the institution and take it upon yourself as an individual to disobey them, I would argue there would need to be a clear immorality in play with the decision rather than merely a dubious and contestable one. "Boss tells you to kill this guy" vs "Boss tells you to focus on saving X rather than Y". Two very different orders. The latter is always going to be contestable to some extent, even if you can adopt a view that says it is immoral, as you yourself noted, you can also adopt a view that sees it as the best outcome. Deciding between those conflicting moral views is the function of the institution to prevent an anarchy of individuals each acting according to their own moral compass. Because the order wasn't flagrantly immoral and/or illegal, it was not his place to disobey the institution and usurp its function. "No matter how you look at it, this is wrong, I will not do it." v "I think this is wrong, but a reasonable person could disagree. I must obey.".

    I think it is Tenma's call since the director is corrupt af. I think he did the morally correct thing. A healthcare system where you prioritise donors sounds dangerous and ripe for corruption. You shouldn't treat people because of the value they are perceived to hold. You should treat people because they are people. Tenma stood up to the director who was blinded by money and greed.

    Chromosomal sex of the baby is determined at fertilisation, are they attempting to have the mother consume more vegetables prior to conception? As altering anything pre-conception would almost certainly change the baby, it would not be the same Ruka, unless time travel wise, Ruka has to exist.

    32:44 well, there's a really good explanation as to why it actually is a thing and their microwave works. It's explained more in the VN and even more in manga and drama CDs side materials. The anime only drops 1 line on the subject later but it's so general and under the rug, you won't connect the dots.

  • @kysfggt
    @kysfggt 5 часов назад

    6:02 it didn't change the worldline because there was no change of outcome. Daru still lost, so nothing needed to be changed. Now, you might ask, why doesn't Daru remember receiving the message. It's because of how the world works. I'm trying to not give spoilers here and use only the info you have right now. As others said in past comments, it's not that Okabe "remembers" the other worldline. It's that everyone's memories change to fit this new worldline that gets reconstructed as a result of changed actions. Okabe's memory doesn't change when there's a worldline shift (and yes, there's an explanation as to why, but that's in A;C game) There was no worldline change here because Daru still lost. If there isn't a worldline change, memories don't get rewritten. Now, if you ask yourself why the hell does it work like this, I got the answers to that too, but it's not part of Steins;Gate, it's Anonymous;Code :))

    The reason why ruka wants to change gender is pretty obvious he is very much into okabe but neither him or okabe are gay, so he feels if he was a girl, he could confess his feelings to okabe. VN cut content no spoilers in VN ruka said his father and older sister forced him to wear girls clothing because "he is too cute to be a boy" and ruka (jokingly) calls them abusive. why ruka ia in love with okarin ? okarin saves ruka when a bunch of cameraman's were harassing him and making fun of him for crossdressing , then he takes ruka to weapon shop and buys a sword for him and keeps coming back to the shrine to spend time with ruka and trains with him.

    I always think that some events from my past indeed shaped me, but not all of them, I am who I am despite the fact that some things happen, not because some things happen. But that does not mean I'd actually change anything I guess, it mainly depends how I perceive the final outcome, and final outcome for now is today. And it is good enough to not try to fix it. Especially when I do not know the new outcome.

    Dr. Stone reaction when

  • @2DTL
    @2DTL 8 часов назад

    8:56 - "Would you change anything?" - I would. By knowing the outcome, I'd tell myself to stress less - because the outcome will be good, so I would stop losing my mind and procrastinate, or if the outcome is bad, I'd do something to prepare for it. Basically, just a bit of care for myself of the past. 19:46 - (About Yuri) "Yuri" - Yuri is a genre of Japanese media focusing on intimate relationships between female characters. While lesbian relationships are a commonly associated theme, the genre is also inclusive of works depicting emotional and spiritual relationships between women that are not necessarily romantic or sexual in nature. 23:45 - (About cosplay) It usually works like that, yes, but it's also not unusual for people to cosplay characters that are just super popular for the sake of social clout (popularity - more followers, likes and etc.). For example: Rem from Re:Zero, Asuna from Sword Art Online, Zero-Two from Darling in the Franxx - these are one of the most popular characters, and I doubt that everyone who cosplayed them, know / like the character. 25:52 - (About Ruka's gender and subtitles) It's the subs mistake. Japanese language doesn't have He/She (Er / Sie), they simply use names, but English language has. In Japanese, correct me if I'm wrong, people use different endings to portrait they gender and/or social status. For example, in Death Note Ep. 1 or 2, when Light and L says "I'm justice" you can hear, that they say it differently, and while Light's version is "the male version", L's is more "gender neutral" to hide his gender, because he's so secretive, iirc // In AOT, original manga, Hanji Zoe is never confirmed to be male or female - "The manga is careful to never address Hange with a gendered pronoun, as per author request", so in original, it's up to viewers/readers head-cannon to think of Hanji as a male or female // in Overlord, Shaltear ends her sentences with "Arinsu" which was used by high-end prostitutes or geishas (also, can be used in another meaning. It's super archaic word though). So, even if Ruka addresses to himself as masculine / neutral, basing on the endings of the words, subs decided to address him as a girl, because he's feminine and wants to be a girl. 31:00 - (About pagers) My parents had pagers. // As of the end of 1996 some 10 million units were in use in Japan, and if Ruka was born in 1993, it's possible that his mother had a pager at this point. 34:45 - (About how much time-jump changes the world line) Everytime Okabe changes the past, a timer / clock shows up - that's the reality he's in (world's line) or how much is changed, don't really remember that. But as it was stated, it won't have MASSIVE consequences, unless it's bigger than 1.

    • @2DTL

    About "Steiner" and "Steins" et cetera, and what does it means. Apparently, it is very not obvious for someone speaking Deutch natively, but for those who doesn't it's very obviously that it is just a Maddo Scientisto Okabe chuny allusion to the Maddo Scientisto Albert "my-theory-technichly-does-not-forbid-time-trevel" Ein"Stein", the only meaning of which is to sound cool and maddo-sciensey.

    I'm glad you are digging the show, it perhaps has got a bit more hand-waving when it comes to time travel theory than other shows but it has a lot of heart. I think that's what makes me appreciate the story even when I feel like there's something like a plot hole itch to scratch- I want to create a reason to go with it, as you are clearly doing in this episode. No lie, the Ruka becoming a girl stuff was the weakest part of the show for me, and talking about divergence or why they are all in the same room after all the drama of sending back a message to a pager makes me feel less alone in thinking that while it was motivated by character it was a bridge too far for plot. I can understand a fetus being xxy or something like that but not because of the mom eating vegetables. In something of a defense of the show though don't forget that 90's Japan was the tech envy of the world and they were definitely using pagers quite a bit. I grew up in NYC then and while we had pagers there was still a gap with Japan. In a sad way they have still held on to old tech like fax machines for a long time after.

    I agree that letting Moeka send a message without checking it is crazy. Despite the whole John Titor exchange, I don't think the risks and potential of it all has properly sunk in for Okabe, and the other members haven't gotten to experience the world line shifts themselves so it doesn't feel real to them.

    Ruka's gender is a bit of a hot button topic and i don't wish to spoil anything that is coming, but what i will say is that Ruka is naturally feminine and not deliberately trying to appear as a girl. He was pretty clearly not comfortable wearing the cosplay for Mayuri and even in the case of his usual shrine maiden outfit, this is something has father had him start wearing and not his idea (i don't believe the anime properly establishes this, so not a spoiler). The distinction thus here is that he feels like he should have been born as a girl and not necessarily that the male him actively wishes to become one.

    Yeah, I still love it, but the whole situation is definitely a product of it's time. Ruka just got done explaining to them that they basically feel uncomfortable with the discrepancy between their sex and how they look.... and the first thing that happens is possibly the worst thing someone could do to confirm that discomfort.

    Why do you assume that slight changes will butterfly into chaos? Wouldnt that mean that among near infinite possible universes we just so happen to be in one where everything just so happened to not mess everything? And besides, small actions have a limit on what they can change. If someone decides to breathe a bit faster that wont make the moon speed up.

    31:50 They didn't worry because they didn't think Ruka's message would actually change anything. They talked about it just a few minutes prior. They just wanted to give Ruka the peace of mind that they at least tried. But Okabe, Kurisu and Daru didn't actually believe that eating some vegetables during pregnancy could change the child's gender. Also, as for the reason why not much changed even though the message was sent 17 years into the past... I think it's because Ruka himself did not change much. Yes, he's a different gender now, but he was already very girly before and was treated like a girl by almost everyone, so when he actually turned into a girl, the timeline was barely affected because it didn't really change the way people saw him/her.

      Even if an insignificant thing was changed, if it was many many years ago, there is a high chance that something big can get affected by it. The ripple effect. For example, had that guy who discovered bacteria with magnifying glass didn't love quality gems and diamonds, it can ripples uncontrobally. The invention of microscope may come a tat bit too late, preventing humanity from discovering antibiotics fast enough to save a key inventor of other technology, e.g., the computer engineering tech. As a result, the rapid progress of communication technology of the 21st would have never happened, and many people who was born due to the globalization would never have existed.

      his friend group and how he interacts with other people would be different though as girl, why wouldnt Ruka personality and shyness from being a girly boy change? His parents could sent him to a girls only school now and everything would be different. That reason is too stretchy for me, I think the world lines being closer to each other makes sense somewhat more.

    This ennourmous text doesnt have any spoilers, they are explanations about what you asked this episode So, you asked about ruka gender and all, and that's a really complicated topic Ruka is, biologically, a man, but mentally a woman, she is trans, but there are a lot of problems about her representation on this series (for me is by far the worst thing in the series). Okay, i understand, it was made in 2009, but that doesn't change these problems. All characters in the story reffers to her as him, as a man, including herself, because this is a common in anime culture, about a character that is man but act as a woman and vice versa. This could be easily fixed with a little of respect for her character by everyone, but not. Because it need to be funny right? Everytime okabe talk about her, he needs to put "but he's a guy" in the end of the sentence, and need to have a scene of someone touching her parts to know for sure. Theres a really weird background that was cut off the anime about her father being really weirdo and pervert, as much as Daru. Japanese culture, there's nothing we can do Also, okabe uses rukako to talk about her because ruka is a feminine name, and adding the -ko makes a more masculine name. The thing about the pagers is that they were very common in japan in that time, pagers entered japan in the 80's and japan was a country that took a while to enter in all os this globalization thing, most of the cellphones and pagers were all produced in japan, thats why they still using flip phones in 2010, the big explosion of smartphones came in late 2010-2011 with the launch of iphone 4, so it makes sense that ruka mother has a pager on that period. Sorry about any typo on my explanation, english not my first language, love your reaction, seeing you talk about physics is relly fun, it would be extremely cool to see a reaction of Dr. Stone, its a anime full focused on recreating all of science history by hand. Loves from brazil 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 ❤❤️

      Sorry but you've completely missed the mark on Ruka, no he is not a trans, his problem isn't gender dysphoria and in this episode he doesn't wish to become a girl because of trans-related issue. It's genuinely a problem you and too many people have where you see a guy acting girly or a girl acting boyish and immediately pushes them as trans. That being said if you do find the "he's cute, but he's a guy" joke of bad taste, I can understand, but he's still not a trans. Ruka's problem is that he's in love with Okabe but by being a guy he's never going to get a chance, which explain the end of his arc (of course not going into the specifics here)

    • @eirei0789

      One small thing, I don't think adding "ko" make a Japanese name more masculine. It's the reverse, it makes the name more feminine. A lot of girl's names have "ko" in them, sometimes added behind a name that's masculine. A simple example being "Hiro" and "Hiroko". With this in mind, "Rukako" is a cute nickname that Okabe uses to address Ruka, perhaps indulging Ruka's desire to be seen as more girly. You might have mixed up "ko" and "hiko". Names with "hiko" are indeed typically masculine names (Hirohiko).

      In one world line Ruka is a homosexual man,. In another world line a heterosexual woman. There is no trans. Stop forcing modern western gender theory onto 2000's Japanese media.

    • @freili11
      @freili11 11 часов назад

      You are right that they're not respecting Ruka's identity as a woman, but they're very rarely using gendered pronouns because pronouns are usually omitted or replaced with names in Japanese. The translation is using "he" to match their disregard for her gender in other areas. The only example of a gendered pronoun I could find in this episode was Kurisu calling her "kanojo" (she) when reacting to Okabe saying Ruka's a guy. Not that any of that matters when Okabe is saying "you've made a crucial mistake, he's a guy, not a girl" right after Ruka expresses she wants to be a girl. Honestly, I've never lived in Japan but I do understand the language and from what I've seen on the internet and in their media, it's really not just a 2009 thing. Japan still doesn't take transgender identities seriously. There's no serious religious taboo or anything around it so there hasn't been as much discourse on the topic compared to western culture, and it's stuck being treated as a hobby or fetish that people dismiss with a "to each their own, as long as they're not harming anyone" kind of mindset. Trying to force the issue and get more respect or rights is seen as a western trend that most people don't really understand. And it seems as if transmasculine people don't exist in the minds of the Japanese public. But in that environment queer people have developed different ways of expressing and describing themselves which makes it difficult to judge from an outside perspective. Japanese trans people often use terminology to describe themselves that would be seen as insulting and degrading in North America, and we can't really decide for them what's offensive.

      There's a problem about "her" representation only because there is no "her" to represent. You have made up in your own head what the certain character supposed to be based on your own personal stereotypes and biases instead of what is actually shown and stated in title itself and now somehow backwards unhappy that the character shown in the title isn't the one you've made up in your head. There is nowhere in the show stated that Ruka (from original timeline) is a "mentally woman". So as nowhere stated or shown that he ever has any problem with being referred as man. Quite the opposite: His decision to ask of sending D-mail changing his sex comes from inadequacy of feeling himself a man, but rarely being seen and treated as one by others. Because he doesn't actually referred by "he" at all (surprise, that's not how japanese language works!) And being referred as "Ruka-ko" by Okabe, as rightfully pointed by other comment, means exactly opposite of what you wrote: it turns his normal gender neutral name into an explicitly girlish nickname. He treated by Mayuri as a dressing doll for girl's clothes right in this episode, and clearly not much comfortable with it. And not protesting against all of it only due to his soft nature and overpolitnes. So he naturally wonders, if he was actually a girl all along, then maybe there never would've be this dissonance between how he feels inside and how he is seen and treated by outside. And you easily can see that as a metaphor for gender dysphoria. It does make a perfect sense (except you've taken it the wrong way around). But it's only a metaphor. Cause he never express any desire or even interest of changing his gender as of now, outside the context of time machine, that is suppose to change his very nature and not just a box of funny pills to grow boobs. And you aren't suppose to treat metaphors literally, they are metaphors, and in actual story (in original timeline) - "he is a boy though" (what, btw, if you unable to read it, is not a joke on Ruka but a gay joke on Okabe).

    Used to cosplay in the past. Cosplay has too wide of a range between amateur to professional that I'd argue it's almost pointless to try to pinpoint what entails as cosplay. Therr are those who just feels like donning the outfit because it looks good/attractive, there are those who want to EMBODY the character. Then there are those who can't care less what the character is, they were either forced, paid or convinced into donning the costume. (Like Ruka here) It's alright to be confused, but the subject itself is rather pointless to pin down.
