I'm sure a lot of people wanted you to watch Monster because of the Germany connection, but it's also just a phenomenally good show, an anime classic. Every reaction channel gets a lot of suggestions to watch this show.
BRO IS WATCHING 2 PEAK SHOWS, you guys, the community are recommending the BEST stuff, thank you! (recently rewatched monster just to show it to my dad, he doesnt watch anime at all and he liked it)
I think I've been waiting for this reaction the most! I like your in-depth psychological thoughts the most! The reason I wanted you to watch this was because of how you thought so in-depth on the psychology of Light, L, Near, and Mello! I really hope you enjoy this!
I really enjoyed the reaction! I really appreciate the thorough commentary even if it isn't everyone's favorite thing, I think it helps us and you get as much as possible from the show! I look forward to seeing the next few episodes because they really push the story in an interesting direction! Hope you enjoy it!
I'm glad the RUclips algorithm is doing its job and showing me this video, even though I watched MONSTER many years ago and it's my favorite anime/manga. I love your reaction analysis and subscribed right away.
I'm not a doctor, but I work with them and have worked in operating rooms. Be it an angioplasty, an orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery or any other operation, most surgeons will stick it out for as long as it takes to finish the procedure. Sometimes things go wrong on their own and sometimes the doctor makes a mistake that makes things worse, but regardless of the reasons why, they are responsible for the patient's condition and well being. If that means they operate for 12 hours, that's what they do. Granted, all other staff in the room can and will change (including anesthesiologists, circulating nurses, scrub nurses, xray techs and so on), but the attending is in it for the long haul
Tenma did the only moral thing. Doctors don't get to choose the importance of a patient. He's the best doctor there. He was starting a very tough, complicated surgery. There was no medical reason for him to change the surgery. Becker should go to the mayor. If it was the other way around, a standard surgery is first, then comes in a patient that needs something complicated, so they move the best doctor to do the complicated surgery and leave the normal one to a normal doctor. At least if it's not forbidden directly according to medical ethics rules for some reasons. Not sure about that. I'm sure what the director wanted was forbidden. That's also why we saw the director instructing Tenma to lie about the order of events with the Turkish man. Yes, from a strictly utilitarian pov maybe saving the mayor would lead to saving more lives. Letting a patient die to use his organs to save 5 patient would also save more lives. I love reactions when people talk a lot. I'll never understand people who want to watch a reaction that has no actual reacting in it. If I wanted to watch just the show, I'd just rewatch the show. If there's anything I don't like in the reaction is your choice to not watch an integral part of the show when it's meant to be seen in the show, the OP and ED, but that's not going to change, so I'm just throwing it out there as some useless feedback. :) Other than that a 9,9/10 reaction. Hope you enjoyed (you finish the show before starting the uploads, right?) this show. :)
I have had bad experiences with ops eds as they have spoiled stuff/mood before. I love going in blind =) But yeah, I would probs choose tenmas route as well, but The director had his point as well and it was more of a "let us see what the future brings as we don't know". I think you could not have faulted any of the decisions morally, but as johan is.. johan, it is even more interesting in hindsight =D
Wow, i love your analysis and review style. I usually am a little annoyed with people pausing in reactions but your insight and analysis is so refreshing that im waiting for you to pause and speak 😂 Love it, keep it coming!
who told you to not watch the outro!? its very important and changes as the episodes go by, you should definitely be checking it out there are no spoilers in it at all. its presented this way as constantly changing for a reason.
he watches a few seconds of it on episode 2 but the lyrics are on english so he skipped it again as he prefers to analyze ops and eds at the end and hoping nothing in them spoils him
Oh boy I’m excited for this! I studied abroad in Germany (I graduated with a degree in psychology and German) so I’m looking forward to your perspective on it as a native. Funny enough my educational psychology professor in the states was German and helped me get research where I studied in Germany. Perfect person for me to watch react/analyze to monster :)
That is so cool! =) If you find that I talk rubbish somewhere, feel free to add your perspective (otherwise as well of course) =) Psychology is such an awesome field, l am so happy that I can teach educational psychology at my department =)
44:41 most people here would operate on the mayor and abide by the director's orders. And most people (those same people 😂)watching this show would say to themselves (and to others by the way) that if it were them, they would operate for the kid😂😂😂
YESS THANK YOU i was one of the people who recommended this anime to you and it’s genuinely one of the BEST anime’s out there of all time can’t wait to sit through this ride with you 😭🙏
Really curious and very interested to hear about personal experience growing up and what you learned about this era of Germany! It’s so SO interesting to learn
oh my god i'm so hyped. truly one of the greatest anime and manga of all time, and absolutely the kind of complex psychological drama that's perfect for you. let's fucking GO
Nice to see more people watching this, one of my all time favorites. On an unrelated note you look similar to Christian Slater. Also, if anyone's looking for another channel that's watching this now TerminuS is another reactor that has some great discussions of a similar length. Love hearing people talk about this show and the concepts in it.
The University clinics may be prestigious and of course with the state of the art tools, but I had one very bad experience there. The clinic I was stationed in was the "Universitätsklinikum Aachen" and I was there because I had internal bleedings somewhere in my intestines. Right before that I had a surgery that attempted to find the cause to no avail. In the university clinic they put an radioactive solution into my bloodstream, to find the internal wound by seeing where it leaks, but it seemed the wound has closed by itslef. After the test they forgot me downstairs and I was stuck in the corridor for an hour as my mother was waiting. Then several days later, my pain with the fresh wound I had because of the first surgery got worse. The Doctor assured me it is nothing and the pain is normal. What he failed to see was that I got an infection and the pain was from the puss building up pressure in my stomach. I got released home. On the same day my mother took me to her home doctor, because the pain was unbereable and I had fever. The doctor immediatly recognized that I had an infection. But at that moment the wound opened and all the puss leaked out. My mother nearly lost conciousness! Luckily the doctor reacted immediatly, openen and cleaned the wound and I was send to another hospital again... That was 2015 I think. This experience changed my opinion about university clinics forever! Although they are state of the art, the lack of experience there is obvious with the staff there!
wow, that sucks. I do not know how good Aachen is, they are mainly known for engineering, but yeah, mistakes can be made everywhere and I heard a lot of stuff from malpractice (like bad diagnosis etc) as well. I think the system is just collapsing due to personnel shortage.
As far as I know doctors usually see patients in Triage order (the more severe a situation the higher the priority), and then it's arrival order, so you don't really get to choose since it's an obvious conflict of interest (ignoring the corruption part of course).
i am so excited for this, i believe there's a lot of depth and culture in this anime. And after watching your death note reactions, im sure you'll enjoy the most out of every little detail this show has to offer, Enjoy!!
Oh, this show is great. Very unique style for an anime story. Feels more like something that you would typical see being told using live action. One of my favorite anime.
Monster is actually my favorite anime! I love how it captures the atmosphere of 1980s-1990s Germany so realistically. The cities, the culture, even the little details feel so authentic. It’s like you’re actually walking through those streets with the characters. I’m curious what you think about how Germany is portrayed
Another good but underrated anime I recommend because you would enjoy as a physics is : "Orb On the Movements of the Earth" an historical inspired seinen anime about the conflict between church vs heliocentric theory. It has a style similar to Vinland Saga.
I just for home from work. Already bought my meals to end my day and switch on the smarttv for RUclips. And, boom, this appears in my recos. This is going to be phenomenal. @storieswithstyle It had been great. As well as the ones that coincide with your broadcasts for Monster. Your current format and insight has been much appreciated. Thank you.
RE: Japanese Doctors vs Western Doctors - In Japan, there is a wide spectrum of medical practitioners, and there Doctors do not have always have the prestige or wealth as Western Doctors do; so when Tenma says his father is in a small clinic, it's like the father is in a small community medical clinic that may not have access to equipment or may not be well staffed. It also appears that with the laws surrounding defamation, many terrible doctors are still able to practice no0 matter how lazy or incompetent they are. At any rate, the implication is Tenma's family is not wealthy. In contrast, doctors of large hospitals tend to be very well paid. It's my understanding that the Japanese medical field is very strange, due to the way Japanese culture works. The German Medical Health system starting using the Manchester Triage System which was developed in the 90's, with the first formal print in 2006, so back in the 80's it's not certain if they had any adherence to a formal, widespread triage system. This could give inordinate amount of power and control to medical directors. You have to also remember that this is a Japanese interpretation and representation of German Medical Health structures and institutions of the 80's. Monster was published between 1994 and 2001.
You are completely wrong in every aspect. In Japan, doctors who run clinics earn nearly twice as much as those employed in large hospitals. The Japanese medical system is such that you first go to a local clinic, and if the problem cannot be dealt with there, you go to a large general hospital with a letter of referral. Japanese defamation laws do not apply if the information is true and in the public interest.
I've been waiting for this! I think it'll be my 4th time re-watching the show. The OP is indeed spoilery, but you could listen to just the song if you want to. There are no lyrics.
oh! i don't know you, it's my first time seeing you, but i hope you finish this anime, even if it's long! if you say you have psychological backgrounds, this will be a very great anime for you. and i would love to watch the reaction of someone who's both german and has psychological background. sound interesting
One important point to keep In mind, the boy’s surgery is supposed to be difficult. Idk the realities of a surgery like that, but the show does paint the boys surgery as a very difficult surgery through multiple lines of dialogue. The show gives off the messaging that the mayor has a pretty standard procedure needed, where the boy needs a miracle surgery. My assumption is that Tenma figures the mayor should have a high chance of surviving no matter who works on him, but he is the only hope for the boy. The show also let’s us know that Tenma is a rising star surgeon. He substantially better than his peers.
I do not think so necessarily, as the mayor dies. :D But yes, a fair point. It is a really complicated situation that is presented really "easy", though later it becomes even more complicated of course :D
@@storieswithstyle And the mayor might have died even if he had chosen to operate on him instead of the boy. Then you would have a dead mayor and a dead boy.
@@storieswithstyle If you are referring to your commentary on whether it is ethical to give preferential treatment in the pursuit of having the funding to help even more ppl in the future, I agree with you. While it is pretty gross to treat ppl like that, it is the more pragmatic decision. Regarding the mayor's passing. I still believe that it was meant to be implied that he had a high likelihood of survival even though he ultimately didn't survive (it's still just probabilities and survival is not guaranteed). The feeling I get from how everything is setup is that Tenma is making a choice between obeying bureaucracy/politics and someone's life. I don't think the writer intended to make his struggle a choice between saving one person or another person. If Tenma was making a choice between who to save, then I agree, there is nothing logically wrong with choosing the mayor. It is a bit sociopathic of a choice though. The show makes it even more cold blooded by having him already preparing to work on the boy. It's not like Tenma just walked into the hospital and was allowed to decide who he wanted to work on. He is being told to leave the boy that he was mentally and physically prepared to work on.
There is a popular belief in Japan that the spread of VHS videos brought about the unification of Germany. It is said with some plausibility that the people of East Berlin broke down the wall because they wanted to watch West German porn videos. From that context, It is considered that former chancellor Merkel did not understand those subtleties due to being a woman and ended up with an overly idealistic political orientation.
Considering this is episode 1, I can't use the knowledge of future episodes. I don't know if I would've choosen differently, even though I agree with your thoughts. The cries of the mother would shock me! And Tenma is overslept, traumatized and full of guilt, plus his worldview is threatened. If I had his worldview, I think it is naturall that we try to protect it, to shield us from further psychological trauma. So I really don't know if I was in his state of mind.
Oh no, I think I can already kind of see where this is going to start going wrong. I don't like how the girl switched from "Kill me" to "Kill". I also don't like how the bullet went straight through the boy's frontal lobe (higher thought) and maybe even hit his corpus callosum (brain coordination) and cingulate gyrus (emotion and pain).
Funny enough for a long time i thought only berlin was divided in 4 sections, so I was confused and asked my teacher only for them to be like ,,you didn't know this?!!" O_O The fact that no one in class made a snarky remark tells me, I was not the only one who didn't knew O___O
Oh boy you will be in an utter shock when you get to the second episode, then you will understand the reason for the title. And that monster under the bed caricature (what did you call it again in German?), oh man, was among the most disturbing things in my youth when I read the manga. Nom Nom Nom. Btw, in maths, esp in pure maths (and in theoretical physics as well), we just order the authors name alphabetically when publishing papers, and the order doesn't carry extra merits unlike in other academic fields. It is already expected that, when you are collaborating to do research in pure maths, all of the authors were to contribute equally. If one were to simply give a likely fruitful idea without pursuing it into the details and leave the fleshing it out to others, then the person will not qualify as amongst the authors but is simply acknowledged in the acknowledgement of the paper for the fruitful idea. As a matter of fact the whole academic culture in maths is radically different from that of other fields, very casual and flexible in nature. There is also this one influential paper supposedly written by two authors but one of them was long dead before the publication and not even a mathematician! The reason the other author included him because he was his best friend who committed suicide due to depression, but appeared in his dream giving him the utmost important idea he needed to finish his research.
The Butzemann :D Yeah, I was in shock in every ep from 1-4 :D It is just awesome :D Yeah, I mostly do it with my phd students that first author is the one doing most work and then alphabetical order. I like that more. Though some colleagues are really offended by that :D I like the maths approach. There is a lot toxicity in the other ones :( Love the dream thing, that sounds awesome but sad =)
~25:30, on the comment about German police not often drawing their guns Did you miss the comment about 5-6 gunshots being reported? Is it actually common practice to approach scenarios w/o drawing a firearm even when there's an assumed violent crime? Just genuinely curious about how police operate in other countries, watching a Japanese interpretation of German police as soemone from the US. Happy to see you start Monster, I'm loving the bonus insight about Germany you're able to provide :)
I actually think they almost never draw guns afaik. We even had a case in Solingen last year where they did draw guns and did not shoot a person wielding a knife. The are extremely hesitant with guns. =)
i would lough too if i happend to seen blockbuster track too the realism coming back from the story is abit heavier then your everyday anime.. there's a realy interesting story and the writer know suspence very well also monster became a legend by how it create likeable characters in best time (faster and more organic then the usual)
I'm sure a lot of people wanted you to watch Monster because of the Germany connection, but it's also just a phenomenally good show, an anime classic. Every reaction channel gets a lot of suggestions to watch this show.
I see why, it is a really good show :D

Monster have one of, if not, the best psychological themes, you're so gonna love watching this one
Yeah, it has really good psychological writing, only saw it like this in arcane s1 before =)
Yes! I can't wait to hear about your thoughts on this wonderful series! ~ 💫 One of my favourite anime. I love Johan lol.
I think Johann will be interesting indeed :D
You finally started my most favorite anime of all time(personal bias)
I've been waiting for this! I think it'll be my 4th time re-watching the show. The OP is indeed spoilery, but you could listen to just the song if you want to. There are no lyrics.
I will react to it afterwards, I always do =)
finally yes I've been waiting for him to react to monster is a masterpiece.
Omg, I was one of the people who recommended this after Death Note, so excited!
This is a fantastic drama for adults. It's pretty slow burn tho'. But I always liked the irl accuracy and I'll be glad to see your opinions on it
Curerntly it is even a bit too quick :D

Thank you! =)
FINALMENTE, ¡VAMOOOOS!

And is that always bad? 🤔
OH SHIT HERE WE GOOOOOOOO! LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOO!
Here we gooooo Monster!
AHHHHHH im so happy!!!! one of my favourite anime
Omg I'm very glad you have started this
me too :D
Warning you just entered the true Peak legend Anime
Yes, that is how it feels like =)
You are actually supposed to see the ending credits as the episodes progress( the visuals change somewhat)
they are symbolically relevant
Considering this is episode 1, I can't use the knowledge of future episodes.
I don't know if I would've choosen differently, even though I agree with your thoughts. The cries of the mother would shock me!
And Tenma is overslept, traumatized and full of guilt, plus his worldview is threatened. If I had his worldview, I think it is naturall that we try to protect it, to shield us from further psychological trauma.
So I really don't know if I was in his state of mind.
Yeah, it is hard. In his state of mind I would have done the same. But sitting back it is really complicated and I love it. =)
The opening Bible quote is from Revelation 13. The whole book of Revelation has some wild shit in it.
Yeah, i think it has the wheel angels :D
💥WE GOIN TO THE SHOWERS WITH THIS ONE BOYS 💥
Possibly :D
Im gonna love this so much
I hope you will! =)
Now way I was just searching for reactions to this and then you dropped this video 😂
Monster is my fav anime this is so exciting!!! ❤
I already understand why :D
oh god
You're in for a ride
Yes, I think so too! =)
you will LOVE this show
Already am =P
Oh man I've never seen this before. Should be a fun react.
@@EntitySteel she didn't say kill me, she only muttered the word kill.
You're about to have a wonderful time!
You can totally watch the opening btw.
FINALLY !!!!!!! ENJOY THE BEST PIECE OF FICTION IN THE WORLD
It is definitely a masterclass already! =)
Funny enough for a long time i thought only berlin was divided in 4 sections, so I was confused and asked my teacher only for them to be like ,,you didn't know this?!!" O_O
The fact that no one in class made a snarky remark tells me, I was not the only one who didn't knew O___O
I was confused about that as well, but my primary school teacher taught us a lot of history, so he explained that well :D
Monster deaht note code geass my 3 favorite anime
You keep watching bangers
Indeed =)
Thanks Kyle
omg, perfect series to watch. Enjoy it
It is indeed aweosme =)
There is a lot toxicity in the other ones :( Love the dream thing, that sounds awesome but sad =)
ah, the masterpiece.
I love your reactions, please watch the opening at least once before completing it though. :)
I watch OPs and EDs ater they are done to not spoil stuff =)
~25:30, on the comment about German police not often drawing their guns
Did you miss the comment about 5-6 gunshots being reported? Is it actually common practice to approach scenarios w/o drawing a firearm even when there's an assumed violent crime? Just genuinely curious about how police operate in other countries, watching a Japanese interpretation of German police as soemone from the US.
Happy to see you start Monster, I'm loving the bonus insight about Germany you're able to provide :)
I actually think they almost never draw guns afaik. We even had a case in Solingen last year where they did draw guns and did not shoot a person wielding a knife. The are extremely hesitant with guns. =)
i would lough too if i happend to seen blockbuster track too
the realism coming back from the story is abit heavier then your everyday anime.. there's a realy interesting story and the writer know suspence very well
also monster became a legend by how it create likeable characters in best time (faster and more organic then the usual)
Yeah, it is really real
i see someone reacting to Monster, i sub
Already mindblowingly good show!
i suggest watching Orb: The movements of earth anime. Its fairly new and its very good
I might do it later this year when I have more time =)
