How to Prep for planting Beans
The weather has been extremely hot the past few weeks, and there is really nothing that grows well in 100+ degrees. But beans actually do quite well in hotter temps. So it is time to start the beans in my garden. I chose Kentucky wonder and Kentucky blue verieties to plant. I also planted some southern peas in the bed adjacent to the bean bed. Southern peas are another type of legume that likes the heat. It took only a couple days for the first sprouts to pop up, and I have about one week until I will start to see some runners going up the trellis I constructed. By the way, that trellis is super easy to create. Just take a cattle panel, and cut it in 6' lengths, then use the spikes create...

Harvesting and pruning Peppers

It has been over 100 for the past couple weeks, and looks to continue this heat spell for the next couple weeks at least. But the pe...

Harvesting and Drying Oregano

So it’s much better to grow in a pot which I have done here. This oregano has grown quite large and it’s time to cut ...

This variety of sweet pepper is called Gypsy hybrid and it seems to grow well in this heat. As for habanero, I like spice but my family does not. I used to love very spicy foods, would order the spiciest plates at Indian restaurants, and would try to find the spiciest hot sauces. Now that I’m older, my body doesn’t agree with it as much anymore and I just can’t go super spicy anymore. Haha! The best way to hatch all eggs is to collect them first marking them until the hen starts brooding. I only put 12, the last 12 eggs and eat the rest old eggs has little chance to hatch. Once I have the last 12 eggs I let the hen sit on them that way all eggs will hatch at the same time.

    • @Escapingthedailygrind
      @Escapingthedailygrind 10 дней назад

      So collect them, keep them inside on the counter, then put them out with momma? How do you know when she wants to go broody?

  • @cheryldahl9192
    @cheryldahl9192 11 дней назад

    Mom will take care of them to a point. Once she stops taking care of them, the bigger ones will beat them up to maintain their rank in the chicken rank system. This could be okay, but generally it makes the young pullets terrified of everything being beat up so hard. They always have a 'victim' complex of fear even when they are mature. I prefer to put them in their own run when mom stops protecting them until they are full grown. Then you still have to 'introduce' them to the flock, but this way, they are on equal grounds.

    • @Escapingthedailygrind
      @Escapingthedailygrind 11 дней назад

      Well 1st I don’t have a 2nd run. But another problem is, when I introduced the ones I hatched into the flock, it took until week 14 or so before the others would try and kill them. Even then they got beat up. So I’m not sure that’s the best way either. Heck, some full grown hens I’ve introduced get beat up a little in the beginning. It’s the pecking order; how nature is.

    • @cheryldahl9192
      @cheryldahl9192 10 дней назад

      @@Escapingthedailygrind Yeah, the pecking order is not nice. I just like them to be the same size when I put them together to make it as 'fair' as possible, but I don't think there is a 'wrong' way necessarily. Do whatever works for you 😋 and your chickens.

    • @Escapingthedailygrind
      @Escapingthedailygrind 10 дней назад

      Yes the pecking order for sure isn’t nice. But I mean don’t they continually do that throughout their whole lives? I could be wrong. But it seems like they are always trying to find their own dominance in the flocks. The ones I added at 14 weeks got pecked a bit, and were also a bit smaller than the other hens, but settled in after keeping their distance. Now some of them are right in the middle of the pecking order, while some still are low. I respect the way you do it also, I just don’t have a second run currently, or have the money to get one.

    • @cheryldahl9192
      @cheryldahl9192 10 дней назад

      @@Escapingthedailygrind In my experience, if I add them as pullets (or smaller than the mature ones), they will always be picked on and under them even when they are the same size. I assume it must be similar with humans. If you're picked on by someone bigger as a kid, you suffer from a traumatic response or PTSD, and always cower to the bully, regardless of your size. If I let them get together at different sizes, the small ones always have that PTSD response to the others. Now this is just for the hens. The males will eventually realize they are stronger than the hens who beat them down, but they seem more aggressive as adults if they were picked on in their youth. I can't tell you if this always happens or if their are other factors involved, that I have not noticed, but I have kept chickens most of my life, and this has been my personal experience. I don't always have a second run either. Sometimes there is no other way than to put them together. I totally understand, and I'm glad some of your 14 weekers have found some middle ground in their pecking order. I'm sure there are other factors, like breed, and individual personality's of the birds, and other stuff. I have done it both ways too. Money is tight for me as well. It sounds like your chickens are doing great either way! 😁

    • @Escapingthedailygrind
      @Escapingthedailygrind Месяц назад

      I have raised beds, raised beds cost lots of money on large scale. I just tilled up a 20x30 section where I can basically get 7 beds in that are 3x20. Most raised beds are 3x6 or 4x8. Would require 3 at least to equal the square footage of one of these beds in ground. That’s 21 total to equal the growing footage of this plot. At $100+ each metal raised bed on Amazon, that’s $2100 in just the beds, then the soil to fill them. That’s even more expensive. That’s about $2500 for raised bed soil to fill 12” deep. So a little under $5k? Naw I’m good with just tilling. Haha!

My rooster was raised in a brooder and introduced last year and it took about a year of squabbles and fights before he earned his rank above the dominant hens. Of course his spurs are gigantic spears now too so he's definitely alpha cock; he'll draw blood if you don't have a stick or something to hold him back and keep your eye on him.

      @Escapingthedailygrind Месяц назад

      It is really silly for sure. So Texas as a whole has been a bit strict in the past because they say you’re stealing from their aquifer. But if your using it, then your using less from the city water which is from the aquifer. But it’s about money and not really how much usage. It is really silly. Luckily the HOA is fine with the water collection. And they allow chickens, but that’s it. I sure wish I could get goats!

      @@Escapingthedailygrind What hubris that they claim that they own all the water but yeah they really just want that water to pass through their meter so they get their cut because obviously the world would come to an end without taxes! It's the same reason we don't have Tesla's tower technology to transmit and receive electrical power wirelessly which can't be metered to individual houses and the energy is right in the air so there's no one to pay to generate it. That was Tesla's intent that you could power your homestead with a one time cost to pull electricity directly out of the air like you can tap into a well to get water. Now we have all these ugly wires running all over the place so we can all have a hamster-wheel meter to pay their rigged rates on every kWh thanks to JP Morgan.
