  • For those of you that don't know, I am working at getting my soil to the point where it can grow veggies well. I have extremely hard packed soil with lots of rocks. While it's nutrient dense clay, it is too compact right now for the roots of veggies to access these nutrients. So I am tilling, removing rocks, and growing cover crops. This bed has now gotten to the point where it will be able to grow some veggies. This corn is growing well, and is the best round of corn I have grown so far. Adding nutrients and compost also helped give this corn a kick start. I am super excited to see how well this round grows. Alternating between deep rooted crops and shallow rooted crops will be the key to building this soil. My next crop I will grow is going to be buckwheat which is shallow rooted and produces heavy amount of vegetation which I can then chop and drop and hopefully build the soil with organic material. Anyway, in just 1 month, this corn has grown more than knee high, and I am excited to see where it will end up. Hopefully the poor native soil doesn't stunt its growth. I will keep you all updated.
