Anker PowerHouse II 800 Troubleshooting and Teardown
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Месяц назад
A bit of an impromptu video here. It poured down rain through an open window onto the top of the PowerHouse II 800 (Anker 545), and then the power station appeared to not function. No script here just opening it up, and trying to figure what might have happened. Troubleshooting, testing, wires....oh my. Here it is! Finally! I mentioned it in the video, and I will say it here again, it may very well be possible that Anker has resolved these issues with iterat...

OK. So after running out of the 6-pack of compressed air that I bought I don't know how many years ago, I decided to give this battery-powered air duster a shot. It works great! There are a few instances where I could see compressed air working better, but not enough for me to purchase more canned air. I also take it apart and test it out, so stick around for that! Ugh this newer APC unit is way harder to swap batteries in than all my older UPS units. All you had to do was pop a cover off, disconnect the terminals and slide the old battery out and the new one in in reverse. 2 minutes and no tools needed. Those also had 12 volt 7.2 aH batteries that had great runtime.

    Yay! The Asus RT-N66U is what I'm currently using! With DD-WRT firmware, and upgraded with long-range 9db antennas. I bought it in a thrift store for $5, but spent around $30 to get a replacement PSU (it uses a really tiny barrel) and the antennas. It's serving as a client (like a "travel router") so I can pick up a distant wifi AP and then plug my PC into the ethernet jacks. I set up the 5Ghz band as the client and the 2.5Ghz band is an AP which relays the network connection, mostly for my phone. The only dissappointments I have with it is HOW HOT it is - I might mod it to add a fan someday, and I can't clone the wireless MAC address and have to use the one identifying it as an Asus product.

    I can recommend GLinet routers! They aren't the highest-end, and the company is small, but they're made by an open source router nerd using a nice proprietary GUI on top of a fork of OpenWRT.

    I got so tired of jump starting my batteries, I got a good, safe but dumb charger that just apply low current without too many "probing" of the battery. It revived nearly all my batteries. I have gradually reduced the use of "smart" high-speed chargers for NiMH and NiCd chemistry batteries. For safety reasons, they build so much "smarts" into those chargers that they are very prone to error.

    Thanks for the deailed review that includes dissection. They may be "pulse charging" if you want to look it up. I don't think that 1 Amp is too high for a AAA cell to handle if they are monitoring the peak. The earliest fancy Nimh charger from Astroflight that I owned recommended 1.2xCapacity charge rate to make the -DeltaV peak more detectable.

    reminds me of lithium batteries in a clear case sold by rolling cart. The things have a fancy little meter readout on the top with volts, and nominal % charge. Whoever the incompetents that assembled it were, there was no sealing between the meter and the plastic case... just cut a slot in the plastic and push it in. The stupid thing isn't even splash proof. Seller accused me of using batteries underwater, when none of these batteries have any water or dust sealing. As vulnerable as a keyboard, but everyone knows you can't spill water on a keyboard! Ahh china.... always quality number 1! (what damage did it do? fritzed BMSs fitted directly under non-waterproof meter on all the batteries, under a verandah after rain shower splash, during strong sidewind)

    It's probably important to note, for those watching in 2024, that the price on Amazon of the Powerowl AAs has stayed steady at ~$24 for 16 AAs while the Eneloops (non-pros) have skyrocketed from $30/16 to $55/16. So sure, you might only get 2000mAh out of the Powerowls (i.e. equivalent to the Eneloop non-pros) but you can have almost 2.5x as many of them for the same price. And Eneloops Pros are now $85 for 16. So $1.50 per battery or $3.50 per ($5.30/ for the pros), that really factors into the decision depending on your use case.

The best way to charge Ni-MH batteries is slow and gentle for long life, like 8 on charge and 8 in use, I charge my batteries at 50Ma, but they take a long time to charge, a good video stay away from this charger!!

    That power gauge is interesting. How many kW can you pull before the ICE comes on?

    • @TheCuriousEngineerChannel
      @TheCuriousEngineerChannel 2 месяца назад

      That's a question that requires kind of a long answer, as it depends on the mode: In the FHEV version that I have, most often it's around 15-20 kW as a consistent draw in EV mode sustained up to like ~2 minutes. In Normal or Sport mode, it will jump up to around 45 kW sustained for at least 30 seconds at WoT. In transition between EV and Hybrid mode where both motors are active (88kW + 35kW), I've seen it peak for 1-2 seconds at around 91kW as the ICE spooled up. The PHEV, as you might expect, has different operating ranges, as it has a much larger battery, but the motors and engine are the same. Thanks for watching!

    • @aspecreviews
      @aspecreviews 2 месяца назад

      @@TheCuriousEngineerChannel wow, that little battery is really able to provide 90kW of power? I'll have to check some specs for the battery in the FHEV Escape and calculate a C rating for that, that sounds pretty extreme. Even the very high-end RC battery packs can only pull about 100C at the most, and their continuous rating is closer to 10-20C.

    • @TheCuriousEngineerChannel
