Friday on the Farm | GOOD FOOD, digging trenches, and BUILDING WALLS | Unscripted Vlog #2
A hot, sunny day on the homestead getting everything done. A bit of work in the garden, and a peak at how things are growing (our first pineapple is starting!), lots of work on the house site, good food, and all the bits and pieces that keep this place moving forward.

What if there was NO WINTER? | Learning to thrive WITHOUT SEASONS | Chewing the Cud Episode 1
Просмотров 1997 часов назад
What would it be like if you didn't have a winter to contend with? What if the seasons blended together, gentle ebbs and flows of rain and sun, so that there was no anxious preparations for the next season? We talk about this, from the perspective of a couple who grew up and homesteaded with seasonality, and now are learning the intricacies of living without such a cyclical mindset. We also div...

    Cold weather climate foods like Virginia Ham, pickles sauerkraut, etc are not here. I have found some pickles, but difficult to find. I found one brand of sauerkraut in an Ambato supermaxi. Some trees seem to have a seasonal cycle. I planted reina Claudia's (plumb) and apples in April, several months later, they all lost their leaves. I was worried they had died. But now, the leaves are coming back. Capuli (black cherry) grows wild here (10,500ft). They don't totally lose their leaves, but they lose some and others look kind of miserable. The berries are ripe in late February and March. Now, it's terribly dry and windy and a little colder. Your discussion is one I have thought of many times. It's so different here compared to a winter culture. It's so interesting how climate affects culture. Yes, butting in line really common here. I agree it's odd because ecuadorians are generally polite except when driving.

    I remember the first time I saw a nine foot tall tomato “tree” I never really thought about it before that they could just keep on growing and producing and the Ecuadorian time has always bugged me too I have softened to it but the not showing up thing still drives me nuts. My in-laws have been trying to get their refrigerator fix for a month now. As far as the seasons go I always tell people that in Ecuador you have to travel to the seasons they don’t come to you. If you want summer you go to the coast if you want late fall early spring you go to Cuenca or somewhere higher up if you want winter you go to the top of a volcano. If you want late spring you go to the orient. On my property I have a bunch of guayacan trees and they all flower at different times which I find odd seeing how close they are to each other, I’m sure there is a reason but you would think they would happen at the same time it’s wild. With the weather being the same all the time it’s nice to just wear tee shirts my Duluth dry on the fly flex fit cargo pants all the time.

    I love the clips and the end of your videos so much!! Bloopers are amazing ❤ I love the real moments and goofy joy in them. The idea of no winter is a lot to think about. But also no blistering hot summers. A couple years back most of our garden failed because we had a week over 100°F. So much was essentially cooked and several of the perennials didn't come back. The next year it didn't warm up until April so the season was too short. Losing the extremes would be so weird and pretty fantastic! Then again, our house has pretty much no insulation so both extremes are pretty brutal. Our cats have favorite rooms for different seasons based on which is warmer. We can pretend it's because they want to spend more time with us, but it's just that we're a heat source. I think the fairly steady temp would be great for those with arthritis. The idea that plants just keep going blows my mind. The pepper tree sounds so cool!!

    The environment definitely has an impact on people's behavior, and that also determines how society develops. From the 16th to the 18th century, the majority of the population lived in the Andes because of the good climate (that's why I think more natives settled there many centuries before the Incas), while the coast and the Amazon were almost uninhabited (of course, ancestral cultures existed, but not as numerous as in the Andes). In the 19th century, internal migrations to the coast began, and in the 20th century to the Amazon due to the beginning of new economic activities.

    Generally speaking, December to May (rainy), June to November (dry), and there are also variations according to the region, coast, mountains, Amazon, Galapagos. In the Andes and the Amazon it rains for longer than on the coast, the Andes are also different if it is in the north near Colombia where it rains more than in the south of the Andes near Peru where it rains less. There are also phenomena caused by the Humboldt current that comes from the south, I am talking about the phenomena of El Niño and La Niña.

    • @tinyhandsbigdreams

      There is more variation in the weather and 'seasons' in the country than we first expected. It's rather interesting, really.

  • @jdsantibanez
    @jdsantibanez 3 дня назад

    Ecuador's two only seasons: In winter, from December to May, the weather is warm and rainy. In summer, from June to November, is the dry season, with cooler temperatures.

    • @tinyhandsbigdreams
      @tinyhandsbigdreams 10 часов назад

      That's interesting, I wonder how regional that is? Where we are, our 'dry' season right now is HOT and dry, and the rainy season is cooler with the rain. There is probably some differences in different regions.
