Recovery: personal, political (U.S. elections but not controversial)
First, a check-in. I am still around and health is improving. Thanks for sticking with me as I continue my slow recovery.
Second, some political advice for people who might have been distraught at the outcome of the U.S. election. Summed up as:
(1) Overexposure to every crumb of news, and the outrage it's supposed to generate, is not healthy. Nor is it useful. That goes for everybody. If it's stressful, it is ok to unplug.
(2) If you're feeling helpless or hopeless, there are very practical things you can do to bring good into the world. Volunteering is a way to reconnect in meaningful ways. If not community, then connecting to help friends and family.

A possible INFJ "Tell"
Просмотров 1792 месяца назад
This one's subtle. But once you see it, you'll pick up the common thread that applies to at least some INFJs. It has to do with a specific communications style. If you or I record a video or have a conversation, we throw a lot of verbal and nonverbal cues that are incidental to what we mean to say. It's "noise" in our intended "signal". But some/many INFJs don't emit that random "noise". There'...
An INFP's Unfiltered Psychedelic Experience

A tough video to make because I want to lead with context and analysis, not events. This video is not truly "unfiltered" because there's no such thing. What I did do, was to try and stick to describing events from a slice of time in the 1980s, without a lot of extra information, at least for the first half of this video. It skips the 'why' of those times and those choices, and how events unfold...

A "tell" for some INxPs (and subscriber update)
You know, as an entp, I love infps', I am a trainee therapist, and I find infps are one type that opens me up.. It's so weird because i try so hard with other types but no success, infp comes, and I literally open up doors .. I think there can be miscommunication, for example. Me with my infp goes to the cinema, she pesters me for a sweet she says no all three times.. to me I'm like why pester me then .. so I offer 3 times to get a scream from her " stop controlling me' , fe vs fi..or last night a infp says I'm off to bed I'm shattered, so I say me too, I have a reply stop copying me..I do find that weird .😮
I have both very fond memories and regrets -- it is a great relationship, loads of fun when it works.
Keeping up with political news constantly will make you become miserable lol
Exactly. Obsessing over each little snippet isn't about being informed, it's about getting little adrenaline and/or dopamine hits as the content plays on the viewer's emotions. That's not healthy.
politics sucks.
Too true.
🙏Glad you are feeling better Dulles. Sending good vibes for a full recovery. 🙏
Thank you Dee! Health headed in the right direction and fingers crossed will stay that way.
Well this is a much-needed community service notice. It really is too much and even here in Australia I've over-consumed to my mental detriment.
Speaking of community service -- the world needs to hear more songs about the noble ISTJ 🙃 I did have a question about the ISTJ song because I used to record music (back in the stone age with a cassette 4-track) -- it seemed like you had some effects, maybe a bit of reverb on the song? Did you add any effects, and how'd you manage it -- after recording the video, taking that part of the clip and working with the audio? Or are the acoustics at Vondelhome epecially good and we're just hearing the natural sound space? (Sorry just curious because the sound quality was much better than I'd ever get with a guitar and a condenser microphone.)
@@dulles1969 ah I love these sorts of questions, the inner ISTJ tech-nerd side of INFP! I didn't do much at all, just some reverb I added in Final Cut (I think it was a medium-size room plugin). But it might also be the condenser mic going into the preamp, which is my usual setup. So yeah, minimal editing!
@vondelpete shockingly good balance and sound quality for something without a lot of (or any) planning. If I'd tried the same the results would be -- shockingly bad.
@ hm well I would still love to see something similar up on this channel one day!
Hey Dulles, Good to see you, and really glad you're on the mend. Sending good energy as much as possible. Appreciate your even-handed elucidation of these current (eternal) matters. I wouldn't anticipate anything other than that from you, my friend. 🙂You said so much of what I've long felt though couldn't quite verbalize. I was fortunate for a few days after the election to be house sitting...indeed, did unplug, and tending to their animals and home was very restorative in the wake of all this. Will definitely be sharing this with some people. Thanks much for this, and continued hope and improved health. -Carm
Thanks so much Carm, and you just manage self-care that came to you naturally -- that's wonderful! This started because unlike you or I who can kinda conceptualize how to deal with things, my wife (ISFP) is taking the political change much more concretely. So she has canceled our house's newspaper and magazine subscriptions, took the radio out of the bathroom and is taking a break from TV news and is cutting back her friend groups in social media. She's sick to tears of politics, and that's understandable.
@@dulles1969 I like your Mrs.' approach too, taking the bull by the horns, so to speak, in a case like this can give one more piece of mind...changing the 'setting' overall. Indeed as you said, more concretely... 🙂
Politicians and news anchors should be forced to wear that detects lies and flashes a red light and sounds like a rattle to alert the general public as to weather there lying or delusional.
I'm really emotional and confused about these things so i won't say much. I do enjoy you talking about planting trees, and it's just nice to see you again 🙂
There are many narratives being weaponized. Most of these are versions of something that was probably inane transformed by paranoia.
I'm so sorry Ingrid -- ultimately ... there was global inflation post-Covid, and U.S. businesses over-compensated, which spiked prices on top of inflation. That caused pent-up anger by people who are falling behind financially, and many people just voted for a party change. I'm looking forward to catching up on more of everyone else's videos, and leaving more comments again.
One just a pot of coffee? That makes for poor fire fuel.

Thank you for this recommendation! I went a-Googling on nootropics and checked out Reddit ... it's intriguing stuff. Maybe I can get into nootropics someday ... but unfortunately right now I'm really limited on what I can ingest. Chemicals are off the table until I get back to remission.
Hi Dulles, Life can be really harsh and for some people they were born in stress and raised in stress.... I'm one of them... This stress can even incapacitate a person before they even have their first job... Sometimes the body is 'screaming' to stop but stoping is not a choice either you continue or you get crushed by life... And obviously at some people you can be crushed by not being able to stop... Hoping you get better soon.
Thank you, and I wish your situation wasn't so similar -- that you could have some time free of the yoke of stress and obligation. So my hope would be, if you are under constant stress, that here and there, you have the small gaps that are in between, small moments where you can still experience things that are joyful and carefree, and that hint something better lies beyond the pressures that you've been under for so long.
You are welcome. Thanks for your words. The problem I feel there are no gaps or they are too short and even these are usually not joyful if not more stressing hence they don't seem to hint that the end of tunnel is near nor if really something good lies beyond...
Good commentary Dulles and totally agree having been there until recently. My motivation was 2 ltr Pepsi daily tho. I liken the situation to pressing the gas pedal on a car all the way with the car being in park. At some point the engine's going to blow. Same with people. Hard lesson to learn but in the past couple of years I"ve learned to listen to my body. Hope you feel better soon and can slow down a lot for your health. The world wouldn't be the same w/o your insights in it. 🙏
Thank you as always Dee, you're inspirational and I should be stronger than this. I liked to hear about your harder years, bringing up three kids and holding down a stressful job -- talk about pressure! That took extraordinary strength, and you just did it. I'm gonna pull out of the hole eventually. Being sick because of stress. Getting stressed because I'm sick. What a dumb loop to get stuck in.
hi...what do you do for work now if i may ask...what do you take to combat it , any supplements etc?
Without getting too specific, I work in a role that's a bit like, say, a McKinsey. But not so prestigious. I don't have a fancy degree. To get back on the right track, historically, takes rest/sleep, daily routine, lower stress, and an extremely restricted diet. (minimize processed foods, sugars, preservatives. Remove artificial sweeteners, alcohol, caffeine. Then there's a big list of individual foods that are out. No fun.) I also take a natural, mild immune system regulator... but not consistently. I have to hold this pattern until something changes -- could be weeks, months, or maybe this time not at all. It's worked in the past.
@@dulles1969 Yeah that's a tried and true method typically. The body has less patience and tolerance as you get older to things it would take in the past, there is a mental component to that as well I believe.
Hi, yes thanks for the reminder. Unfortunately it seems like we cannot avoid huge amounts of stress in this post modern capitalist landscape. So yeah it sucks 😅
Capitalism isn't set up to care about human factors. But it's up to me to see if I can make changes. I just don't really know where to start. The ancient concept of the sabbatical -- one year pause for reflection and recovery for every seven years of work -- sounds like a good idea!
Dulles, good topic and one rarely discussed. I believe for many of us, particularly those of us on the spectrum, we learn at an early age to motivate ourselves through stress and angst. In some ways, for myself at least, it served as a much needed performance enhancer. Also (for myself), as someone that struggled with a need for approval and validation, stress motivated high performance became integrated with my sense of identity. It was a feature of my mask and my mask enabled me to survive. I felt the need to achieve and prove myself at ever higher standards and I became an ever harsher critic of myself. I could never really meet my own approval and there also remained the specter of disapproval from key characters forever haunting my past (cringe). The strategy that once served me to some degree also led to breakdowns, both physical and psychological that have been challenging to recover from. Physical health is something that we can usually address through some combination of the basics; diet, exercise, good daily practices and sufficient sleep. Psychological health is a more slippery subject. One strategy that I do believe helps is the practice of awareness and to consciously rewire motivation away from stress and towards joy. The goal is a subtle internal shift from motivation through angst to a sense of reward through joy and satisfaction. It may be the exact same tasks that need to accomplish but joy and satisfaction are a healthier source of motivation than stress and angst. Again for myself, it's hard to address the physical without addressing the psychological. I wish you well in your recovery.
Thank you Jonmars!! You're hitting on one of my worries, after RadishRaven decided to get a diagnosis I am ... wondering whether I should get tested. But at this age, there's not much to be changed >>In some ways, for myself at least, it served as a much needed performance enhancer. Yes, that's it exactly! Deadlines are very motivating, but it has to hit a certain stress threshold before it's acted on. When there are many projects that all need to be juggled to different deadlines, then it's just constant pressure. That worked, until it didn't, and know I'm in the intersection of physical and psychological: Psychosomatic disorders, at the intersection of psychology and physiology. >>I felt the need to achieve and prove myself at ever higher standards and I became an ever harsher critic of myself. Arguably, this is part of the [socionics] Delta Quadra's description as "Aristocratic" in nature. The concept is that NFPs and STJs tend to hold themselves to a higher standard than everyone else, maybe as a sort of moral mandate. In past conversations it's been twisted back on me with the accusation that INFPs are arrogant (because INFPs hold themselves to a higher standard than they expect from others). That's not exactly wrong, but... sigh.
In a way, it's a new kind of cautionary tale - the long term issue, managing by trying to reduce stress in order to keep going. Like it tricks us into thinking maybe we're taking care of ourselves. That could be an INFP thing, very much 'Si child' - just keep going, keep doing the routine, while doing just enough to keep going and take care of ourselves. My unemployment over the past three years, which is very worrying, makes me also wonder if I've extended my life by a few decades, ha. Who knows, might be the opposite. Anyway thanks for sharing and take care Dulles.
These are two very different sources of stress, with the same possible result... and that's where stress is more of a state of mind, because one could fret over debt and finances, bills to pay and a someday-far-away retirement. Funny how one could be blissful or panic-frayed over either of these situations. Three years' unemployment -- it might be time to start thinking about doing something again, someday. Maybe we can job share -- you can take the travel parts. ;) Thank you as always for your thoughts Vondelpete!
Hey Dulles, Am wishing you the best in improved health, and that you're able to find more of a "work/life balance", if there truly is such a thing (an ongoing process to be sure here too). I'll have to correspond more with you further personally on this, as our situations have some parallels even with our differing vocational paths...Yes though, the seemingly perpetual expenditure of the energy we don't always quite have...it's a big one! Take good care. -Carm
Thank you Carm! I hope all's going smooth with your work and workplace. It would be a good idea to adopt slow living practices -- but I see now the unhealthy addiction to corporate stress and control (and the money that comes with it -- and generous health insurance. There are ugly thoughts here that I have the coverage policies to go down expensive medical rabbit holes and fill up on pharmaceuticals to conceal, instead of resolve, the root causes.)
hey was the food incredible in china?
I'd lived in Hong Kong for a time, so yeah, I am a fan of dim sum but didn't have time to get to a yum cha (tea house) in Southern China. So it was Szechuan and northern Chinese cooking, which is fine. Got to try sea cucumber, which I couldn't find here at home (it's just ok). I brought back a bunch of moon cakes -- a seasonal thing -- and saw with satisfaction when they went through the X-Ray machine, it looked like a bunch of little cannonballs. They didn't ask any questions, they're probably used to seeing packs of moon cakes in peoples' luggage.
Hey Dulles, Welcome back! Glad it was a good trip though understand and feel the exhaustion of these travels just from hearing about them. I'd have basked in the parks among the dragonflies as well, finding solace and a respite from the topsy-turvyness of it all. I cherish those moments when on break at work downtown getting to take in the river if nearby, or watching seagulls....every little bit helps. Thanks for sharing as always. 🐉🪰-Carm
Hi Carm, it is really good to be home. I rather like our domestic dragonflies. While I mostly know downtown Chicago, that has plenty of beautiful spaces -- and the turning of the seasons into fall is in a lot of ways my favorite time of year. Well, except for the endless list of house and garden chores to prepare for winter, all that adult stuff. ;)
Thanks for recounting your travels, wow i love magnolias and dragonflies! 😊 travel always wears me out but like you i have beautiful impressions in my memories from the travels 😊
It seems like on a trip some little things end up mattering. The big plans happen by their own momentum. I've been wrapped up following your diagnosis and post-diagnosis and wanted to say some things -- lots of things -- but then I just didn't have the energy and wasn't sure I'd express it right. I am glad for you if you are glad, and relieved for you, that you have clarity. But it sounds like there is no guidance whatsoever for what to do next, and no local resources. So, nothing got easier for you and I am sorry you found that out. I hope you can make/get some practical changes over time, that are useful for work and at home -- fingers crossed.
"Where there are dragonflies, there are dragons." Thank you for sharing, I'm pretty fascinated by this travelling that you do, and I can't believe I've never been to China actually and I really should some time. Hope you're recovering quickly and yes, I can imagine all this travelling is taking it out of you over all this time...
Thank you!! I've been keeping an eye on videos when I couldn't (or sometimes when I should) sleep but stayed quiet. Foreign social media is generally blocked in China in favor of their domestic apps, so I was cut off for much of the time there. If you've been to Japan and like it, I'd recommend that for tourism. Mainland China is more geared for business. Maybe Hong Kong and/or Macao would be worth a stop-by even though they're sort of backward compared to the most advanced mainland cities. Then there's Taiwan and Korea, neither of which I've been to aside from passing through an airport. Upcoming travel is domestic, to Texas. That's more bearable, say, Sydney to Perth for comparison.
@@dulles1969 I often wonder if I should do a social media detox one day by spending time over in China. Hm yeah I've been only to Hong Kong, over ten years ago - which I very much enjoyed and I guess that could be a little taste. Taiwan and Korea also sorely neglected by me as well.
Hi yes this is what i noticed too about infjs, both on youtube and the INFJs i know. They seem very stiff and formal as they would only use hand gestures very deliberately and rarely stutter or use filler words. The INFJ friend i knew told me he would always think about what he was going to say and how he was going to convey it before opening his mouth to say it, something that never happens to me 😂 i am always saying things and understanding possibly what i mean to say as i am forming/after forming the words 😅 it is fascinating and amazing to witness, but also a little disconcerting.
I'd guess we probably both fascinate and frustrate each other. With my INFJ colleague, I try to focus every so often on getting him to talk about his well-being, because he seems always to be so focused on everyone else.
HES FIGURED US OUT!!!!!!!
Nah, I'm afraid you're always going to be something of a mystery...
@@dulles1969 Yup
I think what you’re hearing is years and years of taking social clues from Fe and constantly learning how to talk to people in order to get the appropriate response so it comes out kind of rehearsed, and it is haha so maybe that’s it. Also, when it comes to Ni, we usually are very focused on our current “wheelhouse” of information, which is also chewed up like a cud in our minds constantly. I actually do teach university lectures in my head and those lessons are taught continuously on loop until I find the perfect way to teach the class. I also will think about future conversations and how those will play out. So you are, again, hearing rehearsed material. Everything in our heads is played and replayed over and over. So it does cut down on the “noise” because it’s barely human haha. A lot of that natural, organic conversation material is removed like chaff with Ni.
Thank you for this insight Michelle! To connect outside observer vs. what's actually happening. It all makes sense. INFJ dwelling on topics until they are so well polished -- and I don't know how INFJs can do it. By contrast I've got many open ideas at any given time and tinker with each in turn. No discipline ever to complete anything, but I do have an endless supply of half-baked ideas. 😉
@@dulles1969 haha I wish I could be free of it sometimes. Very interesting observation though. I’ve never noticed it myself…maybe would be impossible for me to notice if not pointed out. But now I am really interested in getting a feel for how it sounds with the INFJs around me. Thanks Dulles!
💙 I realize beneath the surface warmth, INFJs are (a surprise to some) cold and analytical. Then beneath that layer, I've found them kind and generous. Y'all are complicated. I've only ever found one in real life and interacted with a few online. It's been a privilege to trade ideas and share experiences over the years.
I thought of the clarification conundrum presumptively, that is what I call, the 🤔 hesitation for accuracy either towards how I mean things or the accuracy of conveyed message perception by others. 😮💨
My INFJ co-worker and I have a talent to fill up meeting time going in friendly circles around each other, and nothing gets done. Each is trying to satisfy the other. The INFJ wants to understand what I want. What I want is to deliver what the INFJ needs. We've had many interesting (if unproductive) conversations.
It's certainly a common thread with a lot of INFJs I know, and the INFJs I've been closest with, and those RUclipsrs you mentioned. And yes, that possibly intimidating thing that they sometimes do, in those silences. Which I naturally quite enjoy as an INFP. But as always, the exceptions are interesting too, there are occasionally some strangely scattered ones I've met - they're nearly always a lot younger.
•.• 🤔, •.•, ☺️, long pause, of course the fi first would notice the machine behind the human.
That reminds me of my former boss/CEO (perhaps an ESTJ?) who wielded conversational pauses as a sort of weapon -- control the pacing, control the conversation. That sort of backfired: I found the pace very relaxing, to assemble the correctness and show the consistency of my answers. He actually was a really swell boss in the end. Anyway, I rather like INFJs as people, and on the whole I think they're as authentic and well-meaning as any of the types. I also think we're sort of a mystery to each other because we share the same temperament but no common functions. So I think INFJs have every right to see INFPs as a little odd...
@@dulles1969 I really hope that former boss was an ESTJ, I do like how INFPs can often checkmate those types. I agree about INFJs, and they'd be very correct to see INFPs as a bit odd, we're more than a bit odd, really...
Hey Dulles, Wow quite some vivid memories and experiences! It's reminding me of what Terrence Mckenna used to say about ingesting sufficient amounts of something-or-other: "You get elves...everybody does." 🙂 Yeah though, am a lightweight myself...Some fleeting experiences with cannabis in my 20's was all I can handle. Nothing I regret, though could have done without it all the same. It seemed redundant too, as I was once told "If you were any more naturally laid-back you'd be going in reverse." Ha. Cool pic of your younger self by the way. Very much like my own 19 year old self...right down to the tie-dye. ☺Thanks for the share as always -Carm
Hi Carm! Fortunately, I did not ever deal with "entities" -- you know you've gone too far when.... It's good to be laid back.... to focus on the things that bring joy in life. This is one of the blessings of an INFP, to find comfort and gratitude in the little things. A good album, comfy sofa, a book, some furry frenz and a cup of tea... heaven on earth. Psychedelic (mis)adventures are so -- unnecessary.
@@dulles1969 Amen to that all, good sir. Reminds me also of a favorite line from Robert Creeley... "If it isn't fun, don't do it. You'll have to do enough that isn't..."
Aw is that a young Dulles on the thumbnail? 😊 i have never taken any drugs and likely never will because i am so sensitive, so it's interesting to hear other people's stories. Also as a doctor i only get to see when things go really wrong. Also lol i was taken aback at you being 2 meter haha, glad i read the description 😂
Yes, that is a young Dulles... we are both lightweights, sensitive to drugs. Last year I took two Ibuprofen (and learned not to do that again). And my big oops on metric vs. English measures... no I am not a 6'6" giant... but a conventional height string bean.
I love the point you made. You said it differently but here is your point in my words: to validate someone is to invalidate somebody else. To affirm a content creator in their mistype is to potentially hurt someone else who is that type and is seeking understanding. Speaking from my perspective as an INFJ who runs my own channel speaking to other INFJ, I see time and time again in the comment sections how affirming it feels to discover that said commenter is a thing … that there is not something wrong with them, that finding out about INFJ was helpful beyond words. I have heard the same from my Ni dominant friends, the INTJs. And it’s not just INFJ/INTJ or even INxx. It hurts us all when we miss out on not only understanding self but understanding others as well. In a perfect world, all types would be represented here for all of us to learn. Since we do not live in this perfect place, we must all do the best with what we have and with our current understanding. Thank you so much for this video. I wish more people would listen ❤
My cognition is up for discussion?! I suppose you could make observations and statements about it, but I was not aware people were interested in scrutinizing me, and can I trust people for a consistent analysis? Your too timid for isfj but that opinion isn't exhaustively supported.
Ya got me -- I have to caveat, to limit the scope. Discussing cognition in this context starts with someone voluntarily going on public display as an example of type. If I make a video claiming to be an ENTJ ... while wearing an old baseball cap and baggy sweats, publishing a 30 minute monologue that reprises in fine detail a bunch of my experiences as an ENTJ, and ramble about things I like or hate as a representative of type ... then I think it's fair for you to comment on what you saw -- it just happens to take cognitive function notation -- this is what Fi looks like, and it's not what Si blind spot looks like. An unusual ENTJ. Totally agree there are different interpretations of the functions, some fundamentally different. So you get one person talking Pi vs. Ji, another Fi vs. Fe, another Progression or Concrete. The common thread is that they're talking in one way or another about what's observable. Civility and good taste are in play, too. In my comments, I asked the content creator please to delete them if they were objectionable/inappropriate. I ended up deleting my comments. Because I didn't play it straight from the start, and that was wrong. Final thought: Dunno if it was in this video, but I don't have the talent or the stomach to be Type Police. By the time I pick up on something being 'off', it's got to be really far out of line, beat-me-over-the-head obvious.
@@dulles1969 , I intuitively If I am to respond I will share experience, there is an app about meeting people with the theme being typology, these individuals are not likely to be that type, but very likely have attributes associated with the typology, it’s not a fair requirement of a person when the theory itself has terms that are not derived from constants as evidently present as gravitation. Furthermore the controlling of f confounding variables makes for more uncertainty in real world conditions. An esfp who would test intp on a ‘short form’ test because of valuing or being coerced to pursue academics.
@@jeremiahfix5529 Oof, navigating MBTI themed meetups, nevermind dating/buddy apps must be an interesting, and probably confounding, experience. On the bright side, it's a mutual starting conversation topic for a meetup? Next time I'll try the kayak group... 😉 Your example scenario doesn't meet the criteria for public figures, or for people holding themselves up as exemplars of type. But (at least from my point of view), they are all interesting to think about as aspects of what ways one value (accuracy/correctness/truth) can collide and conflict with another value (kindness/validation/support). Which goes back to the conclusion that not saying anything is best. But then there is no discussion, no exchange of ideas. I don't just wanna sit in an echo chamber being validated (with an understanding that other people feel very differently about having their thoughts/ideas questioned). So I'm grateful for the discussion we're having. Thank you.
I’ve never heard of people choosing their type. So people are making a differentiation (or separation rather) between the four letter name of the type and the cognitive function stack? That’s interesting if I’m understanding right, I would have probably never thought of that. I can sort of see why you would say that it’s generally not right to question what someone identifies as but I would respectfully disagree and say that this is different. In a way, Mbti types are titles to identify with, but in another way Mbti types (specifically the four letter names each type has) is more of a word to use instead of saying the cognitive function stack. So like the name of the type is synonymous with the stack is what I’m trying to say. Adding onto this, I see cognitive functions as ways of processing and as something observable and that taking more information in about Mbti leading to the person choosing a different type, has no effect in changing their actual function stack, aka their type. There’s no right way to do Mbti so it’s not like I’m saying these are facts. This is just my understanding 🤷♂️. Thought provoking video!
And thank you for your thoughtful comment! ... here's an illustrative example how it's possible MBTI vs. JCF are separate: Let's say I take the official MBTI test administered by a certified practitioner. It returns an ESTJ result. I am now an ESTJ -- officially certified. Now if I go back and re-take the official test, and instead I get an INTJ result -- I have changed, just as officially, to an INTJ. But my cognitive preferences didn't ever change (which might be, e.g., SiTeFiNe). Yes this situation makes for Bizarro World, I agree. In this frame, one can be a FiNeSiTe INFP, or a FeSiNeTi INFP, or a SiTeFiNe INFP... The way cognitive functions manifest is (sometimes, sort of) observable. That makes it easier to point out, e.g., the trappings of Fe vs. Fi and saying someone appears a Fe users ... where it's harder to qualify someone to be a specific type, like ISFJ. Up until now, I leaned into this approach to try and keep people happy. But reflecting on it now ... it's just bad implementation, to try and split the difference in a way... to let someone stay an INFP even as the person shows pretty clearly that they are a Fe user, not Fi.
Oh ok, yeah I think I see what you mean, thanks for the long reply
This is quite the confession! I guess this whole thing is a minefield and I agree. There must be so many mistyped people out there but then again, I guess we also know that we've been accused of mistyping ourselves so it's a good policy to mainly keep these thoughts to ourselves. When I began this channel I was wanting to talk about celebrity types and so on, it's one of those blackholes I think about a lot, but I've changed my mind on my initial typings of so many people that I am very wary. I don't know what the solution is though because we should be discussing and debating these things in order to have progress, surely. Are high Se users the best types for making content on MBTI? Now there's a great question. I do find being an INFP MBTI content creator is a handicap - I suspect all INFPs are similar here, where I can't bring myself to make a proper slick MBTI channel that brings in the views, partially due to my own limitations but also the 'idea' of being that sort of RUclipsr doesn't feel right for me, where I constantly feel the need to bring something new or unique or personal to what I make.
I kinda liked the discussions that used to pop up about my being mistyped, and conjecture on what type I really was. I'm a little soft in the head. People generally don't like it. As for celebrity typing (or typing at all), LoL, even people I've known life long -- I only have about half my family sorted. We've the same challenges. I'll settle on a person's type and then change my mind. That doesn't work very well. What I didn't say about the high Se/high Fe users is that successful MBTI RUclipsrs are doing well with shorts formats. RUclips is pushing them hard these days, and that's really good for people who distill nuggets through the Se/Ni axis. I'll celebrate a video that comes in under 10 minutes. 😉 On a completely different note I was in Amsterdam not long ago and they've got a massive beautiful public garden called "Vondelpark"... which got me curious whether there was any chance of catching a Vondelpete there. Should've packed a butterfly net.
@@dulles1969 Ah yes the beautiful Vondelpark, from which I took my channel name 😅 You certainly could have caught one in mid-July 2007 as he spoke to a tree while under the careful watch of an ISTP who was using me as a guinea pig of sorts for certain natural but semi-legal substances...
@@vondelpete That is a precious image. You emerged no worse for wear, and perhaps better for the experience. I've had ... some experiences and it never occurred to me to talk about them. Some people might actually find those old stories entertaining!
@@dulles1969 I definitely emerged...quiet and reflective for a few days after that. Hm I certainly would find it entertaining, I'm sure most would!
Hi, yeah i find that i dont type people on the internet ever since questioning certain content creators type in a video (Melissa Speaks or Frank James). I find though that in my mind people do have mbti types but that we don't need to point it out if we think people are wrong, because we don't know their lives. I would say celebrities can be typed in my view but we have to be ok with it being completely wrong. I love ESFP content but i think you're giving INFPs too little credit. I love INFP creators 😊
I agree, I think there's a little community of people who do like INFP content creators. They like the long form and the reflection. But that makes us not natural entertainers. RUclips is tilting toward a TikTok or Instagram format. It's promoting little bite-sized entertainment over long-form videos. And people with higher Se and Fe are better at that format.
I should mention on the front of long-form vs. quick clips, the first version of this video was almost 30 minutes long. That was too dull even for me. 😆
@@dulles1969 your channel is less about entertainment and more about education, which is great! I would watch a half hour of Dulles 😊 who really cares about the algorithm?
@dulles1969 me, who wants to be an entertainer and my worst functions are Fe and Se: *[sad noises]*
@@_lil_lil There's hope -- there are INFPs in entertainment, so it is possible. But they all -- seem so offbeat. I think of Heath Ledger or David Bowie, or Florence Welch. Seems to be some persona-building, and then they use it as a front to engage with an audience. Yikes, what's involved with that is asking a lot.
Really inspiring💙 So building a story, gathering peaces together.. sounds like data analysis, am I right?
Yes -- it starts with solving a business problem. To get there takes pleading, cajoling, sometimes threats against a mob of unruly datasets to give guidance for answers.
You talk (and formulate) like I do! I feel better about being an INFP already! Grüße aus München!
War gerade vor zwei Wochen in Landshut! 👋 Und nicht überraschend, dass nach all diesen Jahren es immernoch Streit über den Münchner Flughafen gibt...
I feel American society is so hard on infps because they value results & the status quo & politics over connection, humanity & love.
Since INFP’s usually (not always) try very hard to see the best in you, it is so painful to let them down and see the dissapointment almost in their soul. Luckily an apology from the heart goes a long way in restoring the status quo (it needs to be heartfelt). Seeing the best in people is maybe naive from one point of view, but it also feels so nice to have someone in this world see the best in you! And I really think that it brings out the best in people. And I dont think inspiring others to be their best selves is naive in the least😊 Question: Why do not INFP’s seem to see the best in their own selves, like they do others? To me they seem to judge themselves on a different wavelength than they do other people. But maybe this is not what is really going on. I dont know. Just an impression I have made. Many seem to me to be tortured souls that can give other people wings. Well, I for one, just want to see an INFP fly for once!
I have a take on that question, summed up as: "With awareness comes responsibility." It's an issue to figure out the right thing to do, and then fail to do it. (That said, while I have zero evidence to back it, I'd guess that INFPs on the whole are happier than they might sometimes seem).😊
@@dulles1969Ah. That is good to know that there is happiness in there. And for INFP maybe happiness is not ”the goal” per se. It is however a truly lovely spectacle when it comes out of hiding :)
Interpersonal disagreements and arguments are inevitable no matter what personality pairing
True, but our combination fell into toxic patterns that I could've avoided. What seemed to me acts of shockingly bad intent ... was just a blind spot. And ultimately I'm to blame for ending it. I've been with another Fi dom for a long time now. While we clash and it's cringe, we're both aware to avoid doing harm. Conflicts become discussions.
@@dulles1969 never saw it that way. Thanks for the input
I think an issue is that words are slippery and we all view and decide the meanings through our own lenses. You could call it 4D in a way because the words perceived through your own lens fit your own type, and then the words perceived through another lens can in ways fit that type. From my own view of it, I see that ISFJ's will connect with others in regard to feelings and morals in a way that easily adopts the other person's feeling about things, and the INFP does it in a way that easily adopts the other person's perspective from the feeling pallet of the INFP. The ISFJ can't adopt the perspective in the same way and achieves a "good enough" element of that through the feelings of the other person. The INFP won't adopt the feelings but does it "good enough" through an adoption of the perspective.
I toyed with whether you'd be ok including your channel in the description, for people to check out an ISFJ RUclipsr, but then wasn't sure if you'd be ok with what I said in the video (and erred on the side of caution). I don't want to obligate, but if you'd be ok with it, I'd like to add a link to Realities of Typology? From my own biased lens, it seems like ISFJs gracefully connect with others on a feelings and morals basis. INFP "connection" ... erm, awkward. I did want to make a point of it that the Si-Ti stack is an intellectual and academic stack. Add Fe and it's so versatile, from education to scientific to management & business.
@@dulles1969 Well, I'm fine with it, but the hard part to it is that I'm not really connecting to anyone in the videos. I find my own work to be somewhat hit or miss, and I've realized that the more difficult the people I spoke with became, the more difficult it was to talk to an audience I didn't really know through a microphone. I don't think I've really played to my strengths in regard to youtube, but I think it's important to have done it. The issue is, to have one's own thoughts, I suppose it has to be that way. It's helped me but I don't think it's generally indicative of what people would see of even myself if they spoke with me in person. In short, I'm fine with it, but I also think it was more of a "behind the mask" view, which was hard to do, and I'm sure with most ISFJ's would be rather hard to get. I suppose through this, it's become very easy to talk with others about difficult topics meaningfully, as I understand the difficulties from a better angle. I'm pretty sure of my type, and by that logic, anything I do would fit the type, but I'm not honestly sure how I would place myself as a presentation at this point.
Hey Dulles, Good to catch up with you on this. I do remember your prior comparable video and glad you followed up with this. Well one of my dearest friends in the world (met through YT over 10 years ago, used to make music appreciation videos too and inspired me in part to start my own channel) is ISFJ and indeed....is "whip smart", multiple degrees and all, highly logical, yet the most compassionate, soft-hearted, generous person I've met (at least not officially in person yet... :-) But yes, your assessment sounds quite accurate from what I can gather. 🙂Shall catch up further soon. Thanks for this. -Carm
Thank you Carm! I have a similar experience... at my job, the person with whom I work most often and trust most is an ISFJ. The balance between accrued knowledge, critical thinking skills and people skills... absolutely formidable. I hope you will have the chance to meet your ISFJ inspiration someday -- that would be a treat!
Hmm interesting it makes a lot of sense, i will have to rewatch this. Me and my ISFJ friend are both doctors but are natural at different things. My friend is much better at the practical helping and being of service to the community and I'm much more of a person on the periphery of things. I think the way they are so helpful and personable can hide the depth their inner world and soundness of logic. My friend gets sad sometimes thinking he is boring, when actually he is so far from it! 😊 The one thing you got "wrong" was that actually i gave my ISFJ friend the 16 personality test and he was amazed at how accurate the description was. The nurse picture was literally him he said 😂 though i think he identified mostly with the "guardian" title.
Haha, that's where I had to stop and backtrack because you have it exactly right, there are ISFJs like your friend who will totally identify with the nurse archetype. And ISFJs are altruistic and empathetic in a way that INFPs -- are not. And I like the way you described being "at the periphery"... I think that's very accurate. Thank you for these thoughts Ingrid!
“Smarmy”. I like that word haha I can’t say I can understand the concepts you're putting out there in their entirety because I’m not an Fi user. I like to keep concepts like this “in my back pocket” to watch out for and understand more fully later on. I really like that you are advocating for Fi users to extrovert their feelings or “what’s in their heart”. It really is a gift even if it’s awkward, it’s SO wonderful. Actually, as an Fe user myself, I would say the cringier the better to be honest hahaha.
oh my god i do that 💀 today ive been questioning whether i’m si-fi or fi-si (or smth else)… i do this all the time. a billion times worse if i’m talking to myself alone w all the time in the world to ramble, anyway thanks for the vids
I forgot about CSJ and that whole 'buy INFPs a coffee to butter them up' thing 😂 It would surely take a lot more than that. I suppose there is some truth in it, at least when I was younger and accepted all sorts of ENTP gifts, thinking there weren't strings attached 😅
That insight, and a cup of coffee, will buy you an INFP! 😉 CSJ, at least the old version before he started going really weird, had an ability to start with a kernel of truth and then draw a bunch of wrong conclusions. But what do I know, I'm an ISFJ under his system.
@@dulles1969 Yeah it's funny, the old videos still have elements which really ring true and was actually refreshing compared to the other INFP information I could find at the time. But as he himself admitted, he lies all the time, which he explains he does by starting with a grain of truth and going from there. Although yeah, now he's got his own strange issues going on (with the most entertaining comment section I've ever seen)
@@vondelpete That's what drew me to CSJ too, initially. Someone willing to critique not just praise. Which would be great -- if it were at all accurate. And the comments section? Truly. bizarre. I'm glad it's not just me.
I just want to clarify that synesthesia is not always correlated to whether i like or dislike a person. I appreciate Fe users and their sincere acts of love but i don't appreciate when they judge me and force me to do things their way or i am "wrong" and "selfish" for not really knowing how to respond the correct way to social cues. But yes i think that with time i have gotten better at being open minded and compassionate. It isn't always easy for others to see into our world if we are unwilling to put ourselves in their shoes.
Totally agree, your video on synesthesia was the kernel of the idea, but this video was a completely separate leap. It started with my thinking: "well, I don't associate people with colors. But do I associate people with anything. Wait -- feelings?" And considered how tangible those feelings are. It all went from there. And yes, Fe users that try to manipulate through implicit social contracts, yuck... there's the assumption that we're starting from a place of mutual goodwill. Thank you for these thoughts!!
To mesh it in a bit with Si, especially in regard to the idea of synesthesia (and I feel keeping this less detailed leaves a lot of room for optimism in directions I don't initially see so I'll try to let people make this their own), Fe and Te are like a field on the outside of a person that if they are in the right situation and put forth the right effort can expand inward enough that it seems like Fi or Ti. Fi and Ti are a field inside of a person that if they were to really exert the stress to do it, it can expand outside to seem like Fe or Te. But really Fi and Ti have their own space within a person that they are comfortable with, and thus Fi users may seem to communicate more through Ne or Se, and even through Te as proxies for their Fi, and Ti users may use Ne, Se, or Fe in the same way to bridge the gap. I'm not really advocating for anyone to push their Fi or Ti on the outside, or use Fe or Te to explore their inside. But I believe that the unconscious is truly hard to reach, and the Fe of an INFP for example shows up more through their Ne than any natural exhibition of Fe (just my view). What this ends up showing is that outside of a distorted view of making say a Te user's Ti "come out" (I don't believe in this), I find that the Te user's actual internal compass is Fi based. So they will have a good intention, many of them see logical ways of implementing it ,but lack an understanding of some negative implications that could be looped back, but are often painful because Ti users have Fe, and then act as if the internal feelings of the Te user are wrong. What is more accurate is that I have to care for them, keep and acknowledge the good intentions they have, and help them to form those in such a way that the negative possibilities that I saw are eliminated. I think we all mature beyond any given model, but this view has given me the kindness not to judge another as if they were me, because they all work differently, and just like anyone else that realizes these differences, I would want the same kindness in turn. To be fair going the other way, as I don't want to make it as if Ti or Fi is always correct, I'll point out that in my experience, I have used Ti to be too prohibitive of Te users in a way that stopped them from achieving something important because of concerns that may or may not happen. They were very bothered by "possibilities" preventing necessities at that time, and they were more than a bit right. I don't want the view given that Ti is always right and that it's a one way street, the same is true of Fi and Fe.
This is an excellent observation and (if I'm not misrepresenting your point) so very correct... certain function pairs can look like other functions. So, like Si+Fe can look like Fi, and Si+Te can look like Ti. But it's imperfect. And those internal judging functions can lock down hard (Fi famously, but Ti ain't innocent). Once a person assumes their internal evaluations backed by Si/Ni perceptions are correct and its part of their reality ... good luck changing their mind. It can be done, but only by reaching the person the right way. For your wisdom to work from a place where we're all different and approach those differences with kindness, expecting the same in return -- you deserve to reap the kindness you sow, and more! 😊 And on the topic of judging, there are times I've tried peoples' patience by asking question, and prying and prying about some position they hold. It's just because I'd like to understand and map it out -- it's all input. And then I realize I've really overdone it. When I do that, I now try to remember to end by thanking people for their patience in dealing with my questions...
@@dulles1969 Well, I do find a general flow of thought in people to be that you can emulate a shadow function (or something along those lines). I have seen many interesting views that showed me different things, but this is the most popular one. What I see directly is that for an INFP, their Ni is linked to their Fi as a foundational basis, and so Ni will occur naturally in certain ways in an INFP's Fi, but the Ni won't directly violate Ne or Fi. So then issues that affect an INFP's Fi, when it's kind of acting wonky are probably issues more in the space of Ni. The problem there is that if you consider information elements, Ni operates and is concerned in a different space from Fi, so I see every type doing this, but for an INFP, they'll be trying to move in the spaces and ways Fi can move to resolve an issue that Ni could solve that sometimes Fi cannot solve. I like to take theories like this seriously, but also I think the models are never fully perfect, and I switch back and forth. This theory to me seems the most accurate at the moment, and maybe that simply means that it's the most meaningful and fun to live in for now. Perhaps later on, I'll be a firm believer for a while in the idea that an ISFJ's Si and Fe together can emulate Fi (but then how is Se emulated? What differentiates these functions from being emulated varies from theorist to theorist that subscribes to this. Some theories also link a part of Se emulation to Te that then I wouldn't ever have in my emulation unless I was emulating Te too). Also, in terms of Fi and Ti locking, I feel like both can be reasonable, or overly lock on in unfair ways. My favorite situation is the meta where people realize this, and then they are being unfair, but want to give the aesthetic of being reasonable. It feels like it would be a great Key & Peele sketch. The only big difference to me is that Ti locks onto actions that logically link to things (i.e. if a person is running out of a store, they MUST have stolen something!!!.. it can't be that they're late to something). I think there are times that Fi is correct to approach something, and times that Ti is, and when it's the wrong function for the job, there can be a bit of spill over into other areas because the function tries to be more powerful to reach what it needs to reach. As far as CSJ goes, at least he wants to buy you a coffee. I wonder if he's editted it out but he used to brag about how much punishment ISFJ's can take, and say that to ego hack them, "just don't give them any information". Buy someone a coffee vs leaving them in the dark with important matters...
This is so important for the mbti community. I’m glad you said it. The tests are just measuring in whatever way they can, but it's not ideal, you're right. I’m Canadian and we had commercials when I was a kid about Canadian heritage called “Heritage Minutes”. There was one about “the medium is the message”. I can’t pretend that I fully understand the theory haha so sorry if it’s a bit patchy. The theory is that, say, a television has a message that it sends out to its viewers…but what's more important is how the television itself is changing the world in a hundred different ways…therefore “the medium is the message”. It’s interesting how you’ve come to a similar conclusion here. It’s not about what a person’s message is (what they’re doing or saying)…it’s the medium that sets up how you see and process that world, and how that changes our own little worlds we all live in. Or something like that haha I don’t know. Very interesting.
"The medium is the message" was coined by fellow Canadian Marshall McLuhan -- I'm impressed you heard about that! A great catch for a great phrase, and still very relevant. The collection of media streams that we engage with nowadays are novel -- it's reshaping us, in a way. Whether that's good or bad is a separate question (open discussion at 11:00 😉). It came in part from watching folks on Reddit asking about their type. There was one person recently who was so obviously high Ne ... that person would confront what looked like a straightforward question ... then ponder, then struggle over what the question actually meant and how to answer it. Very obvious not by what they said, but by how they expressed themselves, that this was someone highly intuitive. It was a sight to see.
@@dulles1969 Oh thank you! :) Those little commercials came in handy haha That’s so true! I can see what you’re saying. For instance if the question is “are you an organised person who likes to take care of yourself?”...I don’t know!! I’m organised in some ways…I don’t “like” to take care of myself…but I do it or at least try…so I don’t know how to answer that…because saying “yes” feels like a lie and saying “no" also feels like a lie... Haha, that's very interesting that you observed that…it makes a lot of sense. I know it does for me at least
This is something I used to try to explain to people at social events back when I was known as the 'MBTI' guy haha, trying to explain that it's not really about behaviour but more a wiring and framing. But I get the feeling it's hard to understand - I guess even for myself, how wildly different people of the same personality 'type' can be, while still having the same cognitive functions. And yet I still think someone's 'type' is very meaningful.
Just the wiring diagram, yet helpful to understand that the pattern you (or I) resort to: "sift through possibilities, no matter how long it takes, to find the greatest benefit/least harm." As opposed to: "take in what is real, use it to sort out what is true." And yes, sometimes people of the same type have mannerisms that are really similar, even when they have a completely different look and feel. I'm still an amateur here who gets lots of it wrong, even after all this time...!
Yeah, I can convince myself of anything given the right particular information. -I don’t really want to be an INFJ, keep coming to the epiphany I am- Thank You Dulles what you said is familiar to me as I try to analyze myself.
I think (hope) everyone has a road to typing themselves. I have the good fortune of knowing two INFJs well. It's eerie: they've never met, don't know each other, different genders, cultures, backgrounds ... yet they are almost identical in the way they express themselves. Not that they're cookie-cutter, but it's wild. Fingers crossed on your self-exploration... from what little I know, INFJ is a tough journey.
This is one of the best pieces of career advice I have seen for INFPs. Thank you. I myself am a blend INFP and INTP. They might seem like quite different types but I resonate with both and always get one or the other on personality tests. Something I have found with career advice for these types, particularly for INFP, is to stick to more human centered fields - counselling, writing, teaching, etc. And this is fine. However something that is often missed (and it's something you capture in this video) is that INFPs are excellent analysts. INFPs are able to tell the human story found in the cold hard data. This is an invaluable skill and in high demand across multiple fields. INFPs are also excellent negotiators. They can negotiate good rates while maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders (given how naturally approachable they are, INFPs are excellent are building authentic relationships). So, fellow INFPs of the world - never feel discouraged or that there is no place for you in the labour market. We're a unique personality and our skills are needed in a whole host of different jobs.
Thank you ever so much for this kind comment... I actually needed this reassurance just now. I've had a rough week at work (but a good one, week 3 of treading a narrow path between competing interests). It now looks like a win/sorta win situation, so fingers crossed. 😋
