The Rises and Falls Of Midway Airlines: The First Deregulation Airline
As the first airline to make a name for itself once regulations dropped in 1978, Midway Airlines set a goal for itself to provide low-cost air services out of Chicago's Midway Airport. Little did they know that their aggressive expansion plans would catch up to them twice when the world plunges into financially devastating global events out of their control.

The Downfall Of PEOPLExpress: Introducing Flying To A New Generation Of Travelers
Просмотров 89 тыс.4 года назад
People Express was born from the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 with the former aviation experience of Donald Burr. They started off in 1981 with just three second-hand 737s flying to vacation destinations from Newark (EWR). Price was the main driving force of the airline's customer base, with the carrier offering extremely cheap tickets compared to other airlines. Their tickets were so cheap...

PSA was best known for its smiles and its sense of humor for 39 years. They're regarded as America's first low-cost airline and the unofficial flag carrier of California during its time in operation. ATA: The Story of America's Largest Defunct Charter and Low Cost Carrier
Просмотров 75 тыс.4 года назад
American Trans Air, also known as "ATA Airlines", was the USA's largest charter airline in the 1980s through the 2000s, and was a strong competitor in the Low Cost Carrier air service market. ATA flew millions of passengers to their holiday destinations, and transported the most military troops overseas compared to any other US airline for over 35 years (1973-2008). Let’s not forget that Braniff was one of the airlines (along with Continental and Trans-Texas in the beginning) that kept Southwest Airlines in court from its inception in 1967. Southwest wouldn’t make its first flight until June 1971 as a result, and today, Southwest is the only one of the three still flying.
Just a correction… that aircraft is a BAe (as in British Aerospace) 146… not BEA. Otherwise great video.
PSA was also known for having attractive FA's unlike the sky hags you see on AA these days
My Dad got his start in commercial aviation with PSA in 1987 after his 23 year Navy career. I miss PSA
Popular airlines....when Midway Airlines went out of business, the CEO of Southwest Airlines (Herb), stepped in and opened a hub in Chicago, employed Midway Airlines staff, so they wouldn't lose their job. Herb was a great example of leadership.....RIP Herb❤
Sully Sullenberger started his airline career on PSA!
Well psa is still around in a different form…. Most respected 😂😂😂
I don't remember larger airlines offering the same price as People's Express to compete
I don't think they called it economy class back then
I was a flight attendant for Eastern in 1985. Too bad it's days were numbered 😢
I am sorry I made a mistake about the amount of time my grandfather and his brother worked there I am pretty sure they were there from start to finish
Still have all my grandfathers tools eastern airlines tooling etc. Its a damn shame this happened shame
My grandfather and his brother Salvatore Sammy Dilavore and his brother my uncle Johnny Dilavore worked there over 30 years grandfather sheet metal supervisor and Johnny ran the tool room both busted their tails for all that time and got screwed on their retirement
Thanks I flew from BRU to Newark in the mid 80th paying onbord, the return flight had a female captain at that time not common, What a splendid business idea We have south west and Ryan air now flying low cost, the flag carrier struggels with constant huge losses like SAS, but SW and Fr are making money, they have grown into huge airlines, unfortuantly Fank is gone. Now we have online booking ticketing so Peoples business model would work much better today. Some one should start this now, also the fuel consumption is much less.

I flew them several times. Very nice seats and friendly flight attendants. Those cookies were a great companion to the coffee.

Nice video, thanks. I was a regular PSA pax in the 70's when we lived in San Diego, GREAT AIRLINE. I was 15, 16, 17 years old and fell in LOVE with every flight attendant on every flight. Because of PSA I started taking flying lessons and got my license when in high school, later became an Air Traffic Controller. Still a pilot and aircraft owner 52 years later.
I flew on PSA a lot. $19 each way OAK to LAX in late 70s. Super hip and really fun. Really miss them.
Is flying from hong kong to Brisbane on a350 of Cathay Pacific economy a good experience? I am a little uncomfortable of the closed spaces and sometimes panic due to the feeling of being trapped. Please advise me.
Make no mistake, the union killed Eastern Airlines. We would suck up the money Eastern lost every time they went on strike. It was gravy. I’m for collective bargaining, but you got to know when back off. It does your family no good to have to start all over again when they should caring about school and the like.
ATA was one of my best customers and of all the carriers that I dealt with, ATA people were among the very best.
So sad, Braniff was a forward looking airline, great promotions, colors, and those fun stewardesses.
You also got to keep your cups and silverware.
3:45 I didn’t know MidWay went to my airport :O (JAX)
Ironically, airlines in the USA are still failing today. Recently, Hawaiian Airlines was bought out by Alaskan Airlines, because its only other option was going bankrupt and shutting down. Now in addition, Spirit is in severe financial trouble. The failed merger with JetBlue may be the end of the airline within the next year unless someone else tries to buy it out like Frontier - but it is not doing particularly well either.
My dad flew in a eastern L1011
They grew aggressively fast,,their own fault
Seems a bit odd, he hasn’t noticed his nails were not cut yet and looked a bit grubby as he reached out pointing towards the overhead nozzles and lighting switches. Plus a tiny wart too on his finger … an interesting report but awfully typical of that backpacking trip experience for the flight. It’s informative for that year, aside all else said.
Hold on! AirTran was never defunct! The y were absorbed by one of the most successful airlines in history, Southwest Airlines….
It's easy to blame it all on Lorenzo. The Unions were destroying the company and Texas Air was primarily interested in acquiring System One computer. Naturally, the assets were being moved to Continental, a solvent and growing concern. When the unions struck, Eastern management was given the choice by Lorenzo to liquidate or rebuild. They chose the latter. Assets were moved back from Continental in the efforts to resurrect the airline. A number of factors, including soaring fuel costs and recession finally gave the unions their wish. Borman had been hated as well. The old timers would say, "Same hate, different Frank." I know this comment will stir up some hate from those who were duped by the unions. Always does.
Did you seriously say Marine Corpse???
Food and flight from a soy boy point of view. Kid you need some more testosterone in your blood, to get some man bass in your voice. Seriously. When we were 16=17 we had more bass in our voice as young men. Get to a gym, and eat more grass fed beef.
Eastern did not "save" Airbus. That's absurd.
They sure had style though ..... those liveries, colors (colours), Calder art, Pucci uniforms, Halston, etc.
$99.00 from SFO to HNL.
I've heard of a Boeing -707 but i guarantee that i have never heard of a Boeing-720 but maybe you meant Boeing-727.I loved ATA because after my ATA took off from Honolulu the nice flight attendant invited me up to first class cause they needed me to translate a different language to a passenger.
As a kid, I remember hearing the nickname for the 146: "Bring Another Engine" AC
I'm older than Jesus on the Cross, and have been an Airline Pig since I was knee-high high to a grasshopper and never heard of this airline before.
Braniff was just another victim of the deregulated aviation market. This is why under capitalism, the strongest win and the weaker die out.
ATA was just another victim of the unregulated aviation market.
I used to fly em as a baby
Just because you share a name with a much loved legacy airline, doesn't ensure success. The original Western, was one of the pioneer airlines in the U.S. and people had affection for these airlines. Their exemplary service, the family like feeling between the employees and knowing that you were a part of history and something spectacular, goes a long way towards building a successful company of ANY kind. Many people who try to start airlines with a legacy carrier's name, think that the name and sentimentality will bring them success and money. It doesn't work that way. An airline requires a major investment in time and money and you must LOVE the airline business. This is a service industry above all else and your employees, as well as your passengers, can tell rather quickly, that you don't have their best interests, safety and comfort in mind. Speak to the former employees of any airline that fell victim to greed and mismanagement. Especially the airlines that were once "powerhouses"; Pan Am, Eastern, TWA, Continental, Northwest and Frontier. A name alone, will not give you the "Midas touch"..😞
L1011s are beautiful airplanes
These types of videos are bittersweet because they remind us of a time when aviation was exciting, glamorous and enjoyable. De-regulation messed it all up. These airlines were fun and made flying an adventure...we need them back.😞😒
Big Orange
thanks for educating me about PSA more thoroughly! i'm a SoCal kid but not old enough to have experience with them... although I've loved their livery & interior palettes for a long time. just curious why the image at 8:20 is very obviously LAX while talking about game-changing departures from SD & Oakland to destinations in Nevada
We unite!! I used to be a flight attendant for ATA. The best years of my life and visited wonderful countries with great hospitality. No other airline will allow you to experience what we had. 😢
