The Rises and Falls Of Midway Airlines: The First Deregulation Airline
As the first airline to make a name for itself once regulations dropped in 1978, Midway Airlines set a goal for itself to provide low-cost air services out of Chicago's Midway Airport. Little did they know that their aggressive expansion plans would catch up to them twice when the world plunges into financially devastating global events out of their control.

Eastern was a victim of deregulation in 1979. They were never able to overcome the influx of new carriers in the late 80s, and didn’t adapt to new era of competition. Frank Lorenzo was the reason for Eastern, Texas international, Frontier, people Express, and continental to fail. Only continental survived. Frontier was restarted in the late 90s as a separate entity. continental ended up merging with United. They were a victim of deregulation which they didn’t adapt to.

Eastern's downfall can be attributed to 1 man....Frank Lorenzo !! In the days of merger mania, Frank Lorenzo, Ed Acker from Pan Am, Carl Icahn at TWA and Alfred Checci at Northwest, destroyed the airline industry.😡

While there is certainly more than one variable in the equation, by FAR the biggest factor in Eastern's demise was Lorenzo. Possibly the most despised person in the history of U.S. airlines...and for good reasons. JMO but the Caribbean Blue over Ionosphere Blue hockey stick livery (Eastern's final livery) was the sharpest livery of any airline to date...edging out TWA's final, short lived livery!

I was hired as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines at Love Field on the same day Braniff ceased operations. Love Field was a zoo! It was a Wednesday and I couldn't get back home to S. Texas on a company pass because every flight was packed full. By Friday, I was eventually put on the aft jumpseat with the B flight attendant in order to get back home to the Rio Grande Valley and return to Dallas by Monday to start my flight attendant training. A couple of years on, Southwest leased 6 ex-Braniff Boeing 727's and I found some cool Braniff items still stuffed away in the galley and lavatory compartments. I flew for 16 years and was one of the first male flight attendants hired by Southwest after they were sued for not having any. It was certainly the best of times!

Your time lines are off and your facts are also off. Frank Lorenzo was the reason there is no Eastern. It's that simple. Deregulation gave Frank Lorenzo a way to bankrupt four airlines and walk away with all the money. Eastern was the last one. He is the only person that is banned ( by law ) to never have any ownership of an airline. He should be in jail for what he did.

They still even paint the following planes in PSA livery A319-111 & A321-231s. Also could have been seen on a 777 builder plate B777-323/ER. Can you do some on the East Asian airlines. Some of them have a known livery like the Cucumber sandwich paint which is what most people think of Cathay Pacific (🇹🇼🇭🇰 spelling 國泰航空) back in the time of PSA 1970s-1980s

I worked for the original Midway Airlines in Kansas City. I was a veteran of the industry having worked for several airlines and working my way up the management ladder. The reason for not sticking with one employer was due to layoffs and bankruptcies. My experience with Midway was that the bureaucracy of the airline and numerous reporting procedures after each flight made the company make the Federal Government look like a well oiled machine in comparison. When they announced their plans to make Philadelphia a second hub I decided that they were asking for trouble long term and began looking for a new job outside of the airline industry. I was fortunate to find one close to my house that offered a reasonable salary, a regular Monday thru Friday workweek, and a less stressful work environment. It's too bad that Midway didn't survive because they were a good airline and had an extremely dedicated staff.

Flew ATA back in 1995 from MDW to LAX back when they had scheduled services. Both aircraft were Boeing 757s. Excellent service on both flights, dare I say BETTER than what is experienced today on most airlines. The way that airline ceased operations still saddens me to this day. It didn’t help that when ATA changed its business model from focusing from being a vacation airline to promoting business travel, plus adding the 737-800s and 757-300s to the fleet (at high lease rates) which in turn increased the airline’s debt load. The fallout from 9/11 exacerbated the problems.

In 1970 I flew Braniff from Colorado Springs to Dallas Tx via Denver. It was a 727 and I was the only passenger on the plane. The pilot came back to the passenger section. looked at me and said, "Looks like you've got the plane all to yourself." I flew standby and was the only passenger in coach. The first-class stewardess came back to the coach and moved me up to first class, I guess because she was lonely. We sat beside each other in first class and just talked for the whole flight. She kept offering to bring me all these beverages, food, and stuff but I kept deferring, so we just talked. She told me all the places she had been, including Vietnam. I'll never forget that flight and I bet no one else has ever flown a flight like that since.

I had heard ATA was losing money hand over fist in Midway but hung on to it way too long. They also failed to recognize the brand loyalty they had in Indy and thought they had to be the absolute cheapest for anyone to fly them. As a result, they priced their tickets so low that it would take over a 100% load to break even. Northwest Airlines exploited ATA's inability to control themselves and just priced the company into financial ruin. NW added flight after flight in Indy as ATA was trying to expand. You could do incredible mileage runs on NW for extremely cheap. I wish ATA would have priced more responsibly. People loved them in Indy.
