Using Your Harvest - Carrot Fennel Soup DELICIOUS - Episode 32
In this episode we continue to harvest. It's been a great garden season here in my organic Chicagoland garden. I have a little glut of carrots and needed to do something different. So I looked a several Carrot and Fennel soups online and came up with something that sounded yummy. Boy, did it turn out yummy. I don't have an exact recipe as my goal was just to use up the garden glut, but here's the ingredients used:
~~~ Roasted with avocado oil, salt, pepper and paprika:
~Carrots
~Fennel bulbs
~Bunching onions, very mature
~Sweet Peppers (Habanada, Sweet Ingrid, Jimmy Nardello)
~Chicken broth
~More Salt, Pepper and Paprika to taste
~~~ I served this topped with:

Coucou 👋🏻 👋🏻 Encore une agréable vidéo 😊 A bientôt
THANKS for watching, appreciate your stopping by. Looks like the cool loving plants will be ok through the end of October....unless the weather forecast changes.
@@RobinGardensde rien
Wow Robin, you still have so much colour going on. Your chrysanthemums look beautiful. Lovely harvest of chilli peppers, your tomatoes did so much better than mine. Your garden looks fab, take care 😍
Oh I did have an amazing tomato year. Peppers have been good too. Over all a very weird growing season, but muddled through just fine. 🥰
What is the chance of getting an invite for dinner.
High if you're in the Chicagoland area my friend. It's crazy how much I'm harvesting right now. The freezers are packed. Tonight and tomorrow night are frost territory temp-wise then about 10 days of good weather. Hopefully the peppers make it (we've covered them but it has rained- ugh).
Hori hori - celeriac beast: 0-1. 😅 If you made an exact recipe, it would be hard to replicate anyhow. And it's the idea of using what you have that's important. The only really proper meal I made from my crops last year was a soup. Almost everything grown on my balcony or foraged. This year I, I didn't grow many soup ingredients, more things I would eat during the season, and more flowers. We've had a few frosts, and it's been chilly for weeks, nothing is as green and lush as yours. Season is pretty much over. Still got a few carrots to harvest and one kohlrabi. Might have to try and make a soup out of that. I have my inside ginger and frozen herbs too and can buy some more ingredients.
Fingers crossed that you find that property so you can grow more! My second round of ginger that's inside is also doing well.
I find it amazing how many things you still have going. The peppers will ripen inside if it gets too cold. We have loads of rain here at the moment which gives me time to catch up on videos 😂. Fennel smells so good I have 1 plant in the vacated carrot box. 6:28 can you over winter the cabbages? Some great looking carrots 🥕 Robin and I bet the soup made the kitchen smell lovely. Have a fab week from cold wet Canada 🇨🇦
Sometimes kale roots hold over through the winter, they give a few leaves, then they bolt. Might leave it in......but still deciding where to plant the garlic. Bumming about the root knot nematodes.
Can’t beat homemade roasted vegetable soup. We did the same at the weekend ❤ Allie & Tricia xx
I thought 2 large bulbs of fennel might over power it, but the result was amazing.
@@RobinGardens we managed to eat 2 fennel but the rest bolted x
@@TheRightPearPlot I always have spring planted fennel bolt on me. This round was planted after the summer solstice. My reading showed that doing this would help. I also tried an F1 called "dragon" that was meant to be bolt resistant as insurance. Well it worked out perfectly. The Black swallowtail butterflies approved as well.🥰
@@RobinGardens I’ve purchased an f1 variant so fingers crossed for next year x
Sounds like heaven to me
🥰
Ahh well done!
Loving the late abundance. All to soon there will be snow...yuck.
Nice sharing looking for ward seeing your seed start set up. Thanks
TY for watching. I'm ready for a little break, but I'll be itching to seed start come mid January.😃
Love it roasted and raw.
Hi Robin 👋 Gosh you've been really busy. Your garden is so lovely 😻 Really interesting insects where you live. What a fantastic tomato harvest 👍👏👏👏😍 Thank you for joining in with my sunflower challenge, your sunflowers are huge and look absolutely gorgeous, I love them ❤ x
Well the very next day all the sunflowers were broken over by the climbing squirrels. I was sad but it was serendipitous that I got the film shot the day before. My neighbor gave me 2 strawberry hanging pots she was not going to keep over winter. Not the tastiest, but still nice and I thought the birds got at them.....no, I see the squirrel swinging from the pot munching away on the ripe berries....another reason I have no love for the stinkers.
@RobinGardens Awww there's a shame Robin about both plants but great that you have the footage of your fabulous sunflowers 🌻 ❤️ x
Wow awesome Robin you have so many things still growing. Most 🤔 no all my beds are empty and getting manure. The only things still in are the sprouts and cabbage. I have radish and spring onions on the go but I hold no hope for huge harvests 😂. I think most root veg are nicer after a bit of a chill. WOW lucid gem purple colour is awesome. The colour of those peppers is amazing ❤. Shame about the strawberries 🍓 they should be quite sweet if they are a pineberry version. A fab walk around Robin have a super week, Ali ☔️🥶🌞🇨🇦
Yes those Lucid Gems are so different now. Plus I've had a really splitting around the top too. A few on the Good Dr.W. split as well ....they all et handled the same way....crazy.
Nice! I have just about picked all my tomatoes now but the rest keeps on giving. A great year for beans, if nothing else! Sweet Garleek time soon, sat here praying for them to bulk up a bit LOL
Per usual I'm growing too many leeks....and you contributed to that !!!!!
@@RobinGardens LOL I'm still picking leeks here! Easy to freeze though.
It's about that time, isn't it? I had to yank my pumpkin vines a couple of weeks ago but I need to get serious about starting my fall clean-up. 😭 My flowers did okay this year but I feel like everything else struggled a bit. Oh well. There is always next year! Glad to see your tomatoes still seem to be going strong!
It's been an odd year but overall it worked well especially the very mild September.
Hey Robin, loved seeing what you still have going on!! I listened in while I worked this evening. Dr Whyches Yellow ❤❤❤❤
We've been working the garden each day to clear the tenders. Tonight the temp dips but not frost level and Friday we start night time lows unfavorable for toms. So we've got 2 cherries (well stripped down) and a single huge tom on the Mr. Tarter's German trying to get it to blush left. I need to figure out what to do for the peppers as I have so many still on the vines. Otherwise the rest can take the cold. Not liking the earlier sunsets, and not ready for the season to end full stop. I envy that you can still grow lots of things through the winter.
Hi Robin. Looking forward to seeing your seed start set up next year.
I plan to up my winter sowing game directly in my raised beds. That worked out soooo nicely this year.
@@RobinGardens Thats intersting I did not expect that.Will watch closely.
Ooo, air fryer celeriac chips was a great idea. Not that I'm growing celeriac, just gathering tips for the future. Your garden looks so lush still, great fennel bulbs! It's been below 40 F here a couple of nights, but I'm not giving up on the tomatoes. I pick those who have a slight blush.
Just picked all toms except 1 Mr.Tarters German as it's huge and we just need it to blush a little by Friday. Are the last of your toms in the zipper greenhouse? If so that will work. I've used incandescent Christmas lights in mine to add a bit of warmth at night.
@@RobinGardens One cherry tomato in the greenhouse, the rest are outside. Hardly any sun on the greenhouse as the sun is lower every day. We're nearly on the same latitude as Anchorage, and I'm on the north side of a mountain and on the east side of the house I live in. It's challenging.😅 I have this mystery tomato in my pallet collar bed that I really want to get ripe, at least one. Guess I just need to face the hard facts and clear up. Need the greenhouse as a wood shed anyway now. I got several tomato seeds from a colleague today, I just need a bigger and better setup on a sunnier spot. Future plans and dreams are just growing. ☺
Hi Robin, your garden looks great, well done. I'm still preparing my allotment for next year, which will be my second year. Looking forward to your future videos ( Just to get great tips) 😊
TY. I sure hope I can pass on a few helpful tips. I often think about my start and going to the library to check out books. Imagine how much faster I'd have learned things if I had RUclips back then LOL!
Hi Robin. Just watched half your video so far (need to get back to work) but wow! Your tomatoes are great, the celery is fantastic and the fennel is awesome. And as for your flowers - very nice indeed. Will watch the other half later. I'm sure that will wow me just as much as the first. :)
TY Mags. Just finished pulling out my toms. Temps are dipping down at night this week. I need a plan for my peppers as they are still coming on...decent daytime temps and sun for the next couple weeks.
hi maam im new here nice garden have a great day
Thanks so much, and thanks for watching!
Definitely thick soup weather ❤
Leaves are starting to turn here. No denying it anymore fall has arrived. I do keep trying to deny it though.
Seed saving 👍👍👍👍
Nice harvest 🍅🍅🍅🌝👍
TY for watching. Been an odd but great season...especially for toms and peppers.
Spotted!!!
Coucou 👋🏻 Excellente récolte bravo 😊 A bientôt
Love how we all have different tastes - I highly rate the Reistetomate LOL Most of my tomatoes on the plot are going over now so they'll be ripped out very soon. Why not take the ripening tomatoes off the vine, Robin? Once they turn a greeny pink (for red ones) the plant does nothing to aid in ripening. The little "ball shaped" thing above the calyx has healed up and there is no movement of nutrients etc from the plant to the fruit. Plus, they don't need the sun to ripen, in fact the sun can ruin them. Radicchio and its cousins are too bitter for me.
I've tried toms it both ways, and if they ripen most of the way on the vine, the taste is definitely better. The end of the season ones I will bring in and ripen and those taste better than store bought🥰 Our friend that I gave a reistetomate pocketbook plant to....it's his favorite. For us it was just OK. I actually love the purple hearting type radicchio, slight bitterness but tasty. This never hearted or turned purple like the picture on the pack LOL.
Hi Robin. I love the gargoyle in front of the circular bed at 6.02. He is wonderful. I’m waiting to harvest my Greek gigante. Loads of pods at varying sizes so it will be staggered.
That gargoyle is a particular favorite....who am I kidding they all are. We are definitely gargoyle fans, and have them peeking throughout the gardens.
So good to see you and your beautiful garden. Love love love the swallowtail caterpillars❤
TY. We're so blessed to have them every year. I plant extra for them. We're getting rain at last tonight, so I hope you get some in the next couple days. This dry heat is sucking the life out of the plants and trees. 92f here today and it wasn't even uncomfortable to sit in the shade because humidity was like 26%...crazy.
Wow Robin, some amazing and colourful harvests over the past few weeks. Your peppers looked amazing! I have some habaneros too. Was debating making chilli powder with them but I suspect they’ll be too hot. Sorry the squirrels and beetles have been so pesky. Those Dr Wyches look amazing. Allie, from The Right Pear Plot has sent me some seeds for next year ❤❤
TY. You'll love the good Dr. W. they are mighty tasty and HUGE. I've never grown so many HUGE toms ever (and I've been at this a minute). These habanadas are the heatless ones. I finally tasted one today. Good but the Jimmy Nardello's are more favorable. But it's just one, and I need to taste more of them. If you want to try Lucid Gem too (my top fav) message me your address.
Dang squiŕrels! Take a big bite and leave the rest to rot. Have gotten every strawberry and pepper and most tomatoes this year....
The net bags help, but are not perfect as the stinkers are smart.
Hello Robin, I just came across your videos recently. I love your beautiful garden. Thank you for sharing it with everyone. I grow Habanada every year and they are delicious when they are fully ripe and bright orange. Yours looked perfectly ripe. Happy Gardening from a new subscriber in Wisconsin. 🍅🫑🌶️🫛🦋🌼
Welcome Leslie and TY. I need to take a bite of those habanadas and check them out. Have you ever dehydrated them? I'm thinking of doing a load when I do the alma paprika's. Bet a sprinkle on a lot of foods, would take it up a notch. What part of the state are you in? We have a place up in Door County, but actually like being up there in the fall/winter mostly as there are no tourists. 🥰
@@RobinGardens I’ve never dehydrated them. If you do, let us know how they turn out.🙂 I live in North East Wisconsin, a town south of Green Bay by about 30 mins. It’s called Menasha. I do love visiting Door County, it’s beautiful. Especially Baileys Harbor. I would love to retire there someday.🙂
Hi Robin, great video. You harvested a range of beautiful colours there. 🤩 Have you tasted the habanadas yet? I've grown habaneros for two seasons now (same plants - took them in over winter), and the they are just so easy to deal with, and quite prolific, even now with temperatures around 10 C/50 F at nights, and they don't seem to mind over- or under-watering, anything goes. I dry and make powder of some, but give away most, they are too hot for me, and I'm thinking there is no point in keeping them another winter, even if I really like the plants. If the habanadas aren't tasty, no point in growing them. I harvested four carrots, some kale, lovage, parsley, thyme, beans and bunching onions for dinner today, so things are still growing even though the season is ending. I still have lots of flowers, cosmos are wonderful and the poppies decided to take off as well. I still snack on a few alpine strawberries every day too. I'm thinking my outside cherry tomato is dying before ripening the last fruit, but the one in the greenhouse looks healthier. The cilantro I sowed over a month ago have not bolted, but they are super tiny and might not get to anything. Average first frost is in the beginning of November, but I'm on the east side of the house and hardly get any sun and the days don't get warm either. Chervil is doing great though and have self seeded and new sprouts are coming. I have some self seeded pea sprouts as well, and put some mung beans in my pallet collar bed. I don't think they'd grow good even in season, but I'm thinking a few sprouts is good as a cover crop. Better than weeds. Also, I've put a lot of garden waste in that large bed, somewhere for bugs to overwinter maybe and it will eventually break down.
I just tried the habanada pepper. Nice flavor, but I'd give the flavor nod to the Jimmy Nardello's I'm also growing. But it's only the first time trying them so I would need to check out a couple more. Cilantro will do OK in lower light. I have some thriving in a space that gets about 5 hours of sunlight. I grew Chervil a couple years, but never figured out how to use it in cooking. What do you like it in?
@@RobinGardens Actually, I loved chervil with icecream - or "nicecream" - frozen banana mixed with whatever taste you like - since I'm vegan. It's not commonly used in Norwegian cooking either, but other places in Europe they use it with fish, pasta, potatoes etc. I've got tons of seeds now, and it has self seeded and still flowers, so I will try it in lots of different things next year.
Hi Robin.Nice video looking forward to growing those Dr. Wyches tomatos that you introduced me to.
John where are you located?
@@RobinGardens Hello Robin I live in Greenwich South East London and my garden looks a mess compared to yours.
Cute but deadly 😂😂 no Al not you. Those beetles 🪲 yikes there is one for ever plant. Definitely gonna give sugar baby again. Isn’t it funny that beans do that I had more black and purple than white beans. Yep roisentte off the list 😢. Oh no poor plant pot Robin. Loving nets for seed saving. You have so many beautiful flowers still about. I agree coloured beans should stay coloured. Mums the word at this time isn’t it. We are now in “fall” temps but it’s fine by me. Great job on the sunflower 🌻. Your harvests are amazing and apparently the caterpillars 🐛 agree. Have an amazing weekend guys, Ali ❤
I might take a year off melons. We'll see what the weather prediction for next season is before I decide. We love the flavor of all the varieties of beans you sent us. The net bags are handy, but I need them for squirrel defense mostly. Last day of the super hot temps today. So we'll get some of the sweaty garden jobs done now. 1" of rain predicted for tomorrow Hope your weekend is a good one too! 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
@@RobinGardens ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Those Dr. Wyche’s Yellow are delicious.
❤
Yes they are!
Some get huge. I had quite a few over 1 1/2 lbs. and a couple over 2 lbs.. Definitely the largest I've ever grown.
Wow what a beauty 😍
Last year one formed the cocoon on a leek so we saw the whole process.
❤🐛🦋
Nice one Robin. I was going to do a similar "panel" review but no one was available LOL PS this just popped up as a new one from you!
How interesting as it's been out over 3 weeks. Really screwed up with the umbrella pole in my face in the middle. I did a lot of editing work to try and save it. I'll fly over next year to sit on the panel🥰
@@RobinGardens Yes, I was surprised too - 3 weeks! This is the problem with the tiny screens on cameras and phones, you can't really see what is going on from a distance as you film LOL Your ticket is in the post ✈
@@DigwellGreenfingers 🥰
Ugh why not one of the less tasty varieties?
I’m trying a few of these next year. I’m not a tomato lovely myself but looking at the different varieties growing does make me happy. Dr Wyches Yellow keeps featuring on favourite lists for people
Oh I think a couple of these could convert you to a lover.
Lucid Gem and Dr Wyches Yellow are both superb, and I agree with you all, as LG is such a complex and excellent-tasting tomato. Thanks for the mention, too, you're a star 🌟
Your welcome. I've really loved your tomato tasting series. Hubby and I have been discussing what will have a return visit in the garden and what we need more than 1 plant of.
Hi Robin you have grown some amazing tomatoes, they look awesome.😁👌👍
TY Nick. It's been a good year. I've still not tasted a ripe Atomic Fusion.

Hi Robin, I've just subscribed for two reasons. Firstly I think your garden is absolutely amazing. Secondly I love your calm layed back attitude. Looking forward to your next video. Thankyou for taking me along. Warm greatings from Greece.
How very kind. TY for subscribing and I hope you continue to enjoy. I do love sharing my garden.🥰

It’s September 1 2024 happy Sunday i’ve been on your RUclips channel all day and I must say you’re giving a great education on how to grow from home. I’m truly inspired from everything that I’m seeing. TY very appreciated. I really enjoy growing alliums. Those red ruby onions have a great flavor.
Great video. Those were some good looking tomatoes. Only determinates and cherry tomatoes in my current growing area, look forward to growing more exciting varieties later.
Wishing you good luck on your new place with more garden space!
Some interesting varieties.i am trying some new varieties next year I may try some of these 👍
Oh! Thank you for sharing this tomato tasting with us, Robin! My tomatoes are just barely starting to ripen. I’ve always heard great things about Dr. Wyche’s Yellow. That seems like a very well-loved heirloom tomato. My tomatoes are all slicers and one cherry this year, but I’m hoping to do some cooking tomatoes next year.
Mr. Tarter's German, Britains Breakfast and Costaluto Genevese have all roasted well for salsa and sauce. Once it cools a bit this evening (96f today) I'm going to roast a batch for tomato soup for the freezer. I still need to taste the Atomic Fusion which has been slow to ripen.🥰
