  • WOW have things changed since my May garden tour, just 4 weeks ago! This is a full tour of my backyard, organic, polyculture edible spaces.
I live in Chicagoland, and we have had an incredible heat wave in June, like much of the country. I've watered a lot, added shade cloth and just helped my plants make it through. Most days we've been driven inside by 11am. In spite of the heat, things are ticking along nicely.
Thanks for stopping by for a watch, and please leave me a comment as I really love hearing from you.
TY for the seeds my friends:
    Steve @digwellgreenfingers
    Ali @myrustygarden
    Will @theflyinggardener
TY for the awesome bungee support idea: Nick @ Nickthegardener

It’s September 1 2024 happy Sunday i’ve been on your RUclips channel all day and I must say you’re giving a great education on how to grow from home. I’m truly inspired from everything that I’m seeing. Thank you so much for sharing it❤ the nets that you have around everything are truly genius from the regular gardening nets to the laundry nets absolutely genius Ty 👍🏽

Hi Robin, they are Alpine strawberries, so nice that after 7 years I am growing them again. Nice update and hopefully the rabbits will go elsewhere so you can take down the protection.
    ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.

TY. Good to know the name of those strawberries. I'm going to plant some seeds I've been saving.
Well the bunnies have just not let up. I'm wired and caged to the hilt!

Hi Robin. I really enjoyed the tour. Your beds are gorgeous. Your anti- bunny measures don’t look too in your face, on camera anyway. Your weather looks toasty. I’m sitting here at the end of June looking out the window and I can’t see the hills as the clouds are so low, it’s been raining and it is barely 15c. 🥺. Goodness knows when I will see my first tomato. I spotted one of your gargoyles - fab 😬. I love your snapdragons - the doubles look amazing. Your fruit is really giving a great harvest. The cherries looked fab. I’m going to net my raspberries today as they are being pinched by the birds and I keep finding half eaten ripe raspberries still on the plant. I look forward to your non-edible tour. All the best. Mags

I should do a tour of the garden gargoyles. too bad we can't go halves on the weather patterns. We'd really have the best of both. Just got the electric bill........yikes. We don't even keep it as cool as some folks do.
I'm glad the chicken wire doesn't look too bad, now that I got the green coated one.
I'm a snapdragon lover for sure and it's the first time trying doubles...so far I'm impressed. Too bad they are an F1....think I'll try saving seeds anyway.🥰

Thanks for the tour, lovely to see. I didn't know kohlrabi might not bulb up. I ate the leaves too on the one I already harvested, but that isn't the main reason to grow them.
I have those alpine strawberries too, might not be the same variety but the berries have the same shape. They produced into October last year, when the first frost hit. And they don't have runners, which makes them so much easier to keep and look after. They self seeded though so I have several tiny plants going.

I'm definitely planting seeds from them! Good to know that you ate the leaves...at least I''ll get some kind of harvest.

How do you deal with wartering in summer it is a huge issue here. It’s 31c today and no rain in sight 🤦‍♀️. Aren’t alliums the most excellent seed heads both the edible ones and decorative varieties. WOW your beans are huge mine are ok but no where as big. My tomato plants are finally getting going. Your garden always looks so tidy and pretty. Oh yikes cabbage whites are here now too 😢😢. Oh well we can on,y do so much. Have a wonderful week guys and keep cool, ali 🥵🌞🇨🇦

Al and I divide and conquer the watering. He does the front and I do the back. He forgets to tell me about things...like my Ali poppies are blooming...they are short lived so I'd want to see that LOL. We were so hot and dry for most of June then this week we got 3 rains: 1/4', 2" and 1 1/4". We got a break from the watering....and dang the plants have leapt. But the weeds have leapt too.
All but 2 of the 12 toms have baby toms formed...even in this heat.
I may yank a couple things I'm letting go to seed for the seed library...with all the rain I need airflow.
Any tips on the delphiniums...they are stalled.🥰🤔

I find if I weed anything I see as I'm walking around the raised bed gardens, I just never end up having to do a big weed session that nobody wants to do. That being said, the in ground beds do have a tendency to get more weedy .....so I try to tackle them once every 7-10 days. But once everything gets full the weeding is minimal because they out compete the weeds.
      TY for watching🥰

@@RobinGardens Best approach! I have small metal bins hidden around the garden so that I can do the same and just pop the weeds in there. Well that's the idea anyway, still end up with more weeds than I'd like!
