My Happy Place has been Jeopardized - Episode 17 - GARDEN PESTS

  • This week in the garden has been challenging. Just when I thought I'd out smarted the garden pests, they prove me very wrong. The solution does not make me happy. Fences spoil the view of the garden, but it's the only thing that will save the harvests to come. Thankfully, I discovered the issue and took action before all was lost.
    Garlic Scape Pesto
    ------------------------------
    ~Garlic scapes
    ~Parmesan Cheese
    ~Olive Oil
    ~Macadamia Nuts, Roasted and Salted
    ~Lemondrop basil
    ~Genovese basil
    ~Black Pepper
I never measure when making pesto, as I've done it for years. Best thing is to just blend up all the ingredients and taste until you get it to your personal liking. We had this coating pasta with turkey meatballs, but it's just as yummy as a baked topping for salmon.

In the words of Elmer Fudd, “Those pesky wabbits!” Oh, the trials and tribulations of gardening. We get moles tunneling under rows of root veggies, slugs nibbling young plants and cabbage white butterflies laying their eggs on all brassicas if we don’t net them. It’s a pain. Still, we garden because we love it.
I hope the chicken wire does the trick and that cottontail takes a hike!

🤣🤣🤣 Yup Elmer has it right!
This one is very bold indeed.
You are so right about all the pest's we encounter and the measures we go to.🥰
I thought it was fitting that a cabbage white was flying around as we were filming....

Stinker 😂😂 I haven't heard that since I was a child! Oh Robin after all the hard work growing those veggies from seed I know it's so disheartening to see them all gobbled up, like you I try my best not to net the home garden, I totally understand how you feel. I don't think I have any solutions to offer you, other than lone you Roo for the summer as she likes to chase the bunnies in our local field 😅 xx

Al would love a visit from Roo (he's the allergic one).
I have been on high alert for the bugs, and I guess I thought I had the bunny formula figured out.....not.

Hello Robin, I like the idea of threading the poles through the wire first , wow a difference! I esp liked the third basket you placed in the garden. It was taller and I thought I could plant 5-6 smaller sunflowers next to one another positioned so they will come up in the basket and fit through the holes on top. For me the rabbits eat all my sunflowers all the time I have not gotten one for several years. On some of the canes I put empty water bottles upside down with shiny reflective shimmery strips glued and tied on. Sometimes I spray paint the bottles just depends upon energy levels. "I hate those pesky wabbits!” Ok the next day starts now! Steven

I joined the sunflower challenge @ The Feel Good Garden (Linda in Wales). I always have the same problem with sunflowers. We did a cage around them from the start.
Ahhh the water bottles would work out great on the taller canes and spray painting is a great idea.
I'm really worried about a lot of things around the yard this year, including the flowers.

Stinker rabbits!! I'm always picking up random wire basket/cages as I find them - very useful. Aw bunny was so cute!! We have rabbits but they stick to the parks here and don't bother with the allotments, for some reason. Anyway, hope the bunny eats the clover now that he can't get to the crops 🌱💕

He's now gone for the zinnias........ Yes the wire baskets are helpful. Plus it's an excuse to spend the day thrifting (like I need an excuse).

Mini fortress it has to be 😢
Reminds me of the board game mousetrap seeing all those baskets 😂
Got to do what you gotta do Robin.
I’ve just cut some scapes up to go with our roasted turnips, butternut squash and potatoes ❤
Keep smiling 😊 and have a lovely weekend.

Love the wild boar farms top!
Thought this was going to be a cicada related video to begin with. Super annoying though after putting in so much work. Bunny sure isn't shy, very brazen to be just wondering around your yard. Hope the crop protection does the job for you now 🙂🌱

      @RobinGardens  4 месяца назад +1

TY, I love the Wild Boar tomatoes soooooo much, I treated myself to the t--shirt.
The cicadas have not done damage by me. I have a few shed outer cicada cases around the yard, but not the numbers that I thought we might have. A friend 2 towns over is covered in them.
No the bunny is larger than typical and quite a hopper, wish I could have gotten that on film.

Hi Robin I need cane toppers, I'm using beer cans 😂 your garlic looks healthy, mine is covered in rust😮. Good job protecting your crops 👍🙏❤️👌

    • @RobinGardens

The garlic is loving life this year. That batch was super tasty. Rust would be so devastating, since I pack things in closely.
I just checked Amazon UK and they sell the cane toppers like the ones I use.
Let's hope that we've stopped the nibbling.
      🙏

Oof! Sorry about the rabbits, Robin. Last year the rabbits gnawed my sunflowers when they were sprouting... oh, and my lima beans! Generally they grew back but there were a few that didn't 🤬 Oh well. That's the problem with outside... all sorts that are out of our control! Once your crops get bigger they may leave them alone.

    • @RobinGardens

I fenced my sunflowers from the get go, because I would never get any, just like your saying. The 4 legged pests are really a bother this year.

I've been on a few websites trying to find green wire in stock so I can live with the look. After all it's my back yard (funny because normally my inner cheapskate rules). I think I might have located some.

@@RobinGardensI think form over function is a very valid part for those of us who grow our veggies at home. I agree with you, that if you’re looking at it, you want it to be less obtrusive. Glad you’ve located some.
I absolutely detest the environesh cloches, for the same reason. They ruin the aesthetics for me but a necessary evil sadly
