When I was a kid back in the 1970s, my dad had a good friend and partner in his law firm, Mr. Jones, who we called “Jonesy”. Jonesy had been a Marine in WWII and served in the Pacific. I was not at all a war buff as a kid, so I knew nothing about what the Marines had been through. Jonesy was always really good to me and gave me his K-Bar knife, map case, and a few other items he had in the Pacific. I thought it was cool but I definitely didn’t appreciate these items as much as I should have. To me it was just army surplus stuff that you could probably buy at any army surplus store. Jonesy was a fun-loving jovial guy who was always telling jokes and playing pranks. He would also drink himself into oblivion practically every time he came over, often passing out in our living room and staying the night. It wasn’t until years later when I developed an interest in WWII and read books by people like Sledge and Leckie that I realized the kind of hell Jonesy had seen in the Pacific. I can only assume his excessive drinking was his way of coping with the trauma he suffered from the war. I always enjoyed it when he came to visit. He always made time to play board or card games with me (he’d blatantly cheat to win! LOL), and made me feel like he was there to see me as much as he was there to see my dad. He’s one of my most favorite people in my childhood memories.

I know the series is not as dramatic or personal as The Pacific, but if you want to see what the naval sea battle of the Pacific was like, check out the documentary series "Battle 360: The USS Enterprise." It follows the battles of the only carrier to make it all the way through the Pacific War.

Great Review Marley. If you want to see another great series, I recommend the "John Adams". A great 7 part miniseries abour John Adams, his life and accomplishments as a founder of the United States. Paul Giamatti plays Adams brilliantly. Laura Linney and David Morse also star. Co produced by Tom Hanks. A great series by HBO from 2008. Thank you for the reactions, Marley.

John Adams is a fantastic series. But it is depressing in a way. The founders were men of character, intellectual giants. The current crop of politicians on both sides of the aisle can best be described as pygmies.

Hey glad to see you finish this, if you want to see more of these vets i highly recommend you watch a documentary called “he has seen war” similar to “we stand alone together” it has both groups of vets talking about coming home and even interviews with families of the vets talking about growing up with their farthers ruclips.net/video/McKV4PqapO8/видео.htmlsi=ccLHizoBsLdndxUT whether you react to on the channel is up to you but. i highly encourage you watch to not only show respect to these men but to also honor and remember them how they truly were, kids who did what had to be down. As the saying goes “we stand on the shoulder of giants” but those giants were humans like you and me and they struggled in their final battle in life but they did so with courage and determination. Well on to more fun facts Sids Australian sweetheart one day came to vist sid and while he was at work mary called him up and said Shirley's was here. And with that meeting some years later one of shirleys sons who was visiting the states ended visiting the Phillips and began talking to one of Sids daughter's this would lead To both families being joined with their marriage The scene with Eugene and his farther played out basically like that, but he was aiming at the bird before he broke down, it was his dads advice instead of shooting birds he study them and this would prompt sledge to go into biology. (Fun fact Eugene‘s family gifted the actor, his actual pipe which we see in the show for representing their father so well. He still has it to this day) John basilone is still a highly revered and legendary marine in fact the USS John Basilone DDG 122 was christened in 2022 and recently it passed its sea trials and will be joining the fleet soon.

Marley, I recommend you now see the 1946 Oscar winning classic The Best Years of Our Lives, about three veterans adjusting to civilian life, one of whom was played by a double amputee. Please also see the powerful documentary Let There Be Light, about the US Army's effort to treat PTSD (known as Shell Shock at the time). Note: Chesty Puller's son, Lewis Puller Jr., was also a Marine. He lost both legs in Vietnam. He wrote a memoir titled Fortunate Son, which won the Pulitzer Prize. Sadly, he committed suicide.

One of the men I knew had been captured by the Japanese in 1942 in Java along with his battalion of the Texas National Guard. They spent the war as slave labor in Burma and Thailand. He had severe PTSD after the war as a result of all the deaths, torture, and starvation he'd seen. He credited the Vietnam veterans for finally getting PTSD recognized and treatments developed for it. He said whenever you went to the VA hospital you could always tell who the WWII veterans were. They'd be the ones quietly suffering in the corners as they waited for their appointments. Meanwhile, the Vietnam veterans would be pounding the appointment desk and screaming at the attendant, "Where the f*** is my treatment?" Those guys got the condition noticed.

The pipe that sledge smokes from belonged to the real Eugene sledge. It was given to actor Joe Mazzello by sledge’s family as a thank you for portraying Eugene. Unfortunately none of the marines portrayed in the show are still alive. R.V. Burgin was the last, passing away at 96 in 2019.

Hello Marley's, How was your Monday, everything okay? 🙋🏻‍♂️💕 The series was interesting but I didn't like the explicit sexual scenes at all because they were unnecessary, it reminded me of Game of Thrones when there were even rape scenes and that even made me nauseous 😢 What do you think?

    • @marleysmovies
      @marleysmovies День назад

@@Gonzalo_Almendra Thank you for watching with me! I have the final episode coming up. Explicit scenes don’t bother me too much but if I had a choice I wouldn’t add them myself because most of the time it isn’t necessary. I thought a small amount was necessary for the storylines regarding the purity of Rhyneara and Alicent as teenage girls and how Alicent perceived her own virtue in comparison to how she perceived Rhyneara. It plays a part in the breaking of their trust and friendship. Then later on how Alicent herself then commits the same acts she looked down on Rhyneara for. But I do think sometimes they add them for shock and not necessarily needed to push the story (like Daemon having his dream for example)

Marley, soldiers returning from WW2 and Korea had it much better than the men returning from Vietnam. The WW2 and Korean vets had the opportunity to wind down from the war as a unit. Not coming home immediately after the war gave them time together and a chance to "decompress". It was the best therapy for them. Vietnam soldiers came back one at a time. As soon as their tour was over they were flown back home. One day they'd be in a search and destroy mission and the next day they'd be back in the US. WW2 vets were welcomed home as heroes while Vietnam War vets were called baby killers. What the US did to its Vietnam Vets was disgraceful. It was a war started by our politicians who knowingly lied and run by politicians with rules of engagement that made no sense. As my best friend once told me, "the whole damn thing was one gigantic cluster f_€k."😢

Growing up in the 50s I got to know a few WW2 vets. One was my Dad who had dual citizenship (born in Tampa raised in Cuba with Cuban parents and Cuban siblings, except for his older brother) and left Cuba right after Pearl Harbor to enlist in the Army. He was seriously wounded during training and was discharged in 43. My best friend's father was in the Navy and wounded when a Kamikaze slammed into his cruiser during the Battle for Okinawa. He carried shrapnel in his body till the day he died. Domingo, one of my Dad's friends served in the Merchant Marine. His ship was torpedoed twice. He and my Dad would sit out on our front porch and mostly talk politics, but he did answer my questions about his war experience. My late father-in-law was a waist gunner on a B-24 Liberator. He served in Africa and Italy from 42-45. His younger brother fought in Korea and was twice decorated. One thing all these men had in common is they came home and led rewarding fruitful lives. They never gave me the impression that they thought they were anything special. The only combat vet I knew that had trouble adjusting was my best friend, who did 2 tours of duty as a combat Marine in Vietnam. He died in 97 a victim of Agent Orange.😢 The way I see it, every generation that serves is that generation's greatest. The citizen soldier that risks everything for our freedom. I honor each and every one of them; past, present, and future.

The atrocities inflicted by both sides are truly disturbing. Digging the gold teeth out of Japanese soldiers was very common. Other soldiers adorned their foxholes with the skulls of the enemy. The horrifying things that happened are barely hinted at in this series. It was much more disturbing than depicted.

The fanatical and suicidal resistance put up on Saipan, Okinawa and Iwo Jima was a major impetus in decision to use the atomic bombs. Invading Japan itself would have been complete slaughter on both sides.

The battle of Okinawa really pushed the U.S. to drop the atomic bombs. The fighting on Okinawa was so brutal they estimated millions of people would have died in a mainland invasion. There’s multiple stories of Marines not believing the the war was over because they thought they would never surrender. Most Marines thought they would’ve had to kill literally everyone to win. Crazy to think about.

Upon returning with the medic they heard a single gun shot and, much to the disdain of sledge and the medic, out walked another marine who had followed through with the women’s request to end her suffering.

My Great Uncle fought in the Pacific in WW2! He said ( as well as other Pacific Vets I spoke with)That He didn't know what "Atomic" was when he heard about the bombs being dropped! But that it did mean, that he survived the war (many of his friends did not) Once Japan had surrendered! He got through the war without physical wounds ( the effects of Malaria stayed with him for decades) Once home (self medicating) he drank heavily for a period and while drunk broke a leg after a milk truck hit him! He got married QUIT drinking, worked a Job and raised a family! My Great Uncle, a member of the Greatest Generation!

It was estimated that over 10 million Japanese civilians would have died had the Atomic Bombs not ended the war in a week. 2 Years of this episode all across Japan: suicide charges by women and children with sharpened sticks, combat, fire bombing, and starvation.

'Use your intelligence and get these men off the trail." In his book, Eugene Sledge states the insanity of encountering the Japanese POW's when 200 yards away was the front where they were just burning, hacking, shooting, bludgeoning Japanese soldiers.

The good news is that the last episode, by these standards, is much easier to watch. The psychological costs of war are much more heavily covered in The Pacific. You are correct, they did leave some things out that they felt were too horrific for the show.

@@Carln0130 it’s horrific and hard to imagine them having to go back to ordinary lives after this!

@@marleysmovies the amazing thing is that so many were able to. Of course, I'm sure that many were never able to make the transition back.
