At the 25-minute mark you mentioned "the oil". I didn't think about the oil."
It's true that many of the survivors of sinkings during the war, once in the water, had to worry about dying from the oil that was alight in the water around them. There are many pictures of survivors of sinking, covered in the oil. That so many of these men were able to pull themselves together from PTSD like this and go on to live productive lives is a true testament to them.
No shame in you crying. I, a yank, smiled to see the patriotism and pride of what your countrymen achieved and having it commemorated in this manner, well yeah, it made me smile. The movie did a great job treating a historical subject with leading characters who were fictional. It freed them from having to be true to individual historical characters while staying true to the overall historical event. Very well-done movie and a very well-done reaction.

An amazing reaction to an amazing film. The army were angry at the raf because there was a lack of fighters protecting them on the beaches but the raf were fighting the german air force deeper in France trying to prevent them getting to attack the beaches. This film shows where we get our Dunkirk spirit from.

A great reaction to a great movie, young lady. I lived in Essex from 1970 through '74, only 25 years removed from WW II. It was still very present in the English psyche. I learned a lot about the war in school there. I think that's when my love for history started. That and watching "Battle of Britain" in 1970, at 12 years old.
All that to say that when "Dunkirk" came out, I couldn't wait to go see it, because I understood its significance in the chain of historical events that lead to victory in Europe for the allies. Like you, it was very emotional for me. Seeing Churchill's "little boats" arrive to rescue the soldiers on the beach brought tears to my eyes.
If you've never watched it, the 1969 film "Battle of Britain" would be a good movie to react to. Again, I really enjoyed your reaction to this great movie.

War Horse 2011 is an epic by Steven Spielberg. Set in World War 1, it follows Joey, a horse taken into the war and his original owner Albert. It's a masterpiece.

Many soldiers on the beaches did complain about the RAF. However the RAF flew almost non stop sorties over Dunkirk for every day of the evacuation intercepting bomber streams. but they were so high up most of the soldiery did not notice them. Dunkirk was in smithereens which is not captured in the early scenes of the film on fire & covered in smoke due to the German bombardment of the town. The number of soldiers on the beach & equipment is not really well represented. Perhaps Nolan should have used CGI. Also worth watching is the 2004 TV series Dunkirk with Benedict Cumberbatch which also covers the Wormhoudt massacre of British soldiers by the SS on the outskirts of Dunkirk.

Churchill begged Roosevelt for help, but FDR was constrained by Federal law, which took time to change, from strict arms embargo, to repeal, to Lend-Lease, to full Allied assistance (after Pearl Harbor, and Germany's declaration of war on the U. S.).

Alot of politicians and leaders have a brutal side or used very nasty means to obtain power and influence in all ages and societies. I would Say Jimmy Carter, RIP was an example of a small minority that bucked that trend. I'm not standing up for or condoning any wrong doing. However, it's rare to find, perfect, angelic leaders both today and throughout history. They all have faults like most of us Humans. All each of us can do is strive to be better and make better choices. But most of us fail. That has been true since humans came into existance. With all of Churchill's faults, he was great for his courage against Nazi Tyranny and he at least stood behind his principles, good or not good by our standards today. He also overcame a speech impediment and was a great communicator as well. An overall wonderful PM of Great Britain (1940-1945, 1951-1955). As An American, I see anyone in Parliament currently or yet in Congress that would measure up to his stature. He is a once in a multiple generation Phenomenon. Margaret Thatcher wad the same way very flawed, like all of us. Whether you liked her policies or not, she stood by her principles, she was another great communicator. She faced ridicule for her gender in in Politics from the 1950s and even into her term as PM. She even looked up to not just her own Father, but also two other PMs inspired her. David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. History is amazing.

The only person you can blame for the bombing of Dresden is Hitler. Everything that happened in World War 2 and what lead to it can be attributed to him

"They'll be spitting at us in the streets". No that would be Americans that would do that to their returning soldiers almost a decade later.

Hello Marley. You've picked a great movie about the people that saved Western Europe from tyranny. If the British had not stood up to the Nazis there is a good chance that Hitler would have defeated the Russians and all of Europe would have fallen under Nazi rule. The US wouldn't have had a base from which to help liberate Europe and it would have stood alone against the Germans and the Japanese. We know that Hitler lost the war in Russia but if Great Britain had not stood up to Hitler in 1940 then all of Europe would have fallen under Stalin's communist tyranny. DUNKIRK is a shining example of British courage. I hope you follow this movie up with another great WW2 movie, BATTLE OF BRITAIN. It's historically accurate and has a star studded cast; Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Susannah York, Michael Caine, Kenneth Moore, just to name a few. If you haven't seen it please, Please, PLEASE consider watching it. Even if you don't react to it you should see it anyway.

Both my grandfathers were at dunkirk. One left via the beach, the other was on the ships. This is an appalling film that doesnt tell the true story of what happened at dunkirk at all. Im guessing if youre reading this you probably have no idea that the men on the beaches were being shot up, night and day, by the luftwaffe. That they had to stay in holes in the sand where many of them died from air attacks and live among the corpses of their mates.
THE one big thing - if you ever knew a dunkirk veteran - was ‘where was the raf?’ Because the raf was not over dunkirk in numbers. When the men of the BEF got off the ships they were fuming over the lack of air support. Yet you watch this movie and youd think the raf saved the day.
What really saved the day at dunkirk was the hundreds and thousands of ordinary British and French soldiers - let down by their political and military leaders - who fought a gallant retreat to the city in which, at every point where they met them, and despite repeatedly running out of supplies and ammunition, they gave the germans such a bloody nose that the germans dared not move into the city to take them on head to head. THAT is the true story of dunkirk. And its not told in this movie, which is a disgrace.
