Something really interesting to note about these films is that they released during a time when it seems like studios were ashamed of comic book films, rather than embracing the comics they pushed certain aspect away. Director Bryan Singer actually banned Comic Books from coming onto the set as according to sources:

"He wanted everyone on set to look at these characters as three-dimensional figures, as opposed to the caricatures that he thought appeared in the comics*
Fun fact Kevin Feige the President of Marvel Studios was actually a associate producer on X-Men (2000) due to his knowledge of the Marvel Universe. He pushed for more comic accurately like giving everyone their iconic costumes but no one really listened to him. Instead they followed the trend of The Matrix (1999) and gave everyone Black Leather outfits. He then became the President of Marvel Studios and the rest is history. Spider-Man (2002) brought color back along with Fantastic Four (2005).
It wasn't until the MCU that we would start to see Marvel superhero's back in colourful costumes, Hugh Jackman was even a little jealous when he saw how good The Avengers in their movies and hoped one day he'll get to wear the iconic Yellow & Blue Wolverine suit with the mask. So it's just something you'll notice going from the X-Men films to the MCU Marvel films and the cartoons such as X-Men '97. I love these X-men films btw there just a product of the 2000s.

    Some basic X-Men history.
The X-Men were introduced in X-Men #1 (1963) created by writer/editor Stan Lee and artist/co-plotter Jack Kirby. This comic would introduce us to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters founded by Professor Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X. Here we would meet the First Class of X-Men. Cyclops (Scott Summers), Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Angel (Warren Worthington III), Beast (Hank McCoy), and Iceman (Bobby Drake). Everyone, besides Beast were teenagers while Beast and Charles Xavier's were around mid to late 20s. This comic would also introduce Magneto, X-Men #4 (1964) would introduce his Brotherhood of Mutants.
The X-Men would continue throughout the 1960s until Stan Lee decided to drop the X-Men comics to focus on The Avengers, and Fantastic Four. The X-Men took a good 5 year break until Giant Size X-Men #1 (1975) a soft reboot. Here Professor X is seen travelling around the world recruiting a new X-Men team with an unknown goal. We get introduced to new characters like Wolverine (Logan) and Storm (Ororo Munroe) along with other new members as well who you'll meet in future films. Charles reveals that he formed a new X-Men team to rescue the original X-Men who were captured on a mission. The new team saves the original X-Men and the X-Men roster greatly expands.
By the 1980s we would have the iconic line-up you see in this film. Characters like Rogue (Anna Marie) are introduced in Avengers Annual #10 (1981) and later joins the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #171 (1983). Magneto's backstory would get overhauled revealing him to be a Jewish Holocaust survivor in The Uncanny X-Men #150 (1981) an aspect of the character most people assumed was the cause for his first appearance. But nope, took almost two decades for his Holocaust origin to be born and ever since it's been an important part of his character.
A bunch of X-Men lore comes from writer Chris Claremont who began working on Uncanny X-Men (1975 to 1991) along with other comic's as well. John Byrne as well began working on X-Men around this time. They very much developed the X-Men into the team you see today but it all began with Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. We also have comics like X-Factor, X-Force, The New Mutants often overlapping in storyline's following differant Mutant groups.
    Film differences:
The film does have a few differences. Rogue is depicted more as a young teenager while in the comics she began as a villain and later joined the X-Men during his early adulthood. Meanwhile Iceman was one of the first X-Men in the comics but in the film he's a young Mutant attending the school decades after the formation of the X-Men. Bobby and Rogue don't have any relationship connections in the comics, instead we have Gambit who unfortunately never appears in these films but Rogue and Gambit are very much an iconic couple. Professor X is also American in the comics, British accent very much was born from Sir Patrick Stewart playing the role. Wolverine of course joined the X-Men alongside Storm much earlier to what we see in this film. Mystique (Blue Woman) is actually the foster mother of Rogue which is how Rogue in the comics has connections with Magneto. Rogue never knew this until Mystique revealed that she was her mum. Rogue in the movie comes from a more typical Nuclear American Family.
So they did change some things up with this take on the X-Men. Wolverine is very much front and centre and characters like Cyclops, among others have less character develop. But I still really enjoy this films, if you want a take on the X-Men that's closer to the comics and spends more time focusing on the whole team I highly recommend checking out X-Men '97 it's amazing.

Quick mention but the X-Men do exist within the Marvel universe. They exist alongside The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Hulk, etc. X-Men #9 (1964) would be the first crossover between the Avengers and X-Men while Spider-Man would show up in X-Men #35 (1967). It was also common for certain teams to be mentioned across comics, like The Fantastic Four or Avengers being mentioned in an X-men Comic.
You'll not see any of this in the films for legal reasons. People tried to crossover for example Wolverine had a planned cameo in Spider-Man (2002) but it never happened. And Marvel's biggest rights at the time were spread across differant companies with Sony owning Spider-Man, Universal owning Hulk, and Fox owning Fantastic Four and X-Men. And even though Fox owned the rights to F4 they never even crossed it over with the X-Men films. So Marvel during this time was very isolated, a contrast to today where we are seeing everything coming together.
