LEJOG Shakedown Day 1
April 29, 2024
Day 1: Chaffey's Lock to Fifth Depot Lake, Ontario, Canada
Shakedown ride for the Lands End to John O'Groats tour.
81km
8°C
This is day one of the shakedown ride I did early in mid-spring in preparation for the LEJOG (Lands End to John O'Groats) ride in the UK in mid-May.
Stopped in Westport for some extra food, then met a couple from the UK (Sarah and Max) who were on the last leg of their round-the-world tour.
Was a really nice ride from Westport to Fifth Depot Lake, where I found a beautiful stealth camp.
Headwinds for the first 15km's, then it was all tailwinds.

    Hey Reinhart, great seeing you at it again 🙂 Canada looks just like Norway in the spring, you know, before the weather gets warm enough for the treeleaf to pop and makes everything green and lush. We've had 3 nice and warm weeks from halfway through May and into June, but that's it. At least in my area. There's bin lots of great weather up north, though. It's usually opposites. Thank you for sharing it with us. 10 years ago at age 62, I pedaled from New Hampshire to Oregon and one of the posts you made from Coulter Bay brought a smile to my face. From the background I could see that your campsite there was right next to mine. Fun stuff! I admire your stamina on those trails and rocky roads. Also I appreciate your comments and thoughts. Thanks for this recap Reinhart. I have an iPhone 14 and recently purchased a $1,100 Garmin 1040 Solar wanting the battery life, ruggedness, waterproofness, In Reach satellite capability, etc. After spending time learning some of the complexities of linking it with other devices and then realizing it “supports” In Reach, but I still needed a $400 In Reach device, I returned it within the 30 day satisfaction guarantee period. The iPhone 14 offers satellite SOS service and I can get two days out of a single charge while navigating using low battery mode, shutting off the screen when not needed, etc. A phone is more delicate, but coordinating a phone with a GPS unit and a satellite communication device was too much fuss and bother for me. Good luck on LEGOG.

      @@reinhartbigl367 Reinhart, I’ve planned as far as Grants NM. I have given myself options in certain areas, like a taxi in WY if conditions are not favourable across the basin,and I will use alternate routes in other spots. I will see how strong I am in CO and take it from there. I have a 90 day entry permit and will use that and a bit more is necessary. Cheers, Tim

    Hi again ! Another great information video! I bought an inexpensive similar knuckle type support off Amazon for my GoPro .. on the moving shots were you able to record with it attached to you bars or did you have to switch to helmet mount/ chest etc?

    • @reinhartbigl367
      @reinhartbigl367 3 месяца назад

      Hi Ray, I recorded almost all of the moving shots with the knuckled support attached to the handlebar...and on occasion, I removed it to get shots to the left, right and closer to the road...such is the convenience of the clamp that holds the support to the handlebar. Hope this helps!

      I bought the physical, 6-map set as well as the App files...the app of course is free, but you have to pay for the gpx files that the app uses. I used my iPhone for navigation so I bought the set that the app uses. I found the app/gpx files crucial to ensure one doesn't get lost...and the paper maps were invaluable as they are super detailed and have tons of info...and I like paper maps! :-)

    Hi! Have a couple more questions-). Noticed you wore what look like running shoes. I’ve done that before also instead of the heavier 5-10 style mtb shoes Did you have any foot issues? You mentioned before Orvando that there is a woman to call about places to stay .. where can I locate her info? Thanks in advance!!!

    • @reinhartbigl367
      @reinhartbigl367 3 месяца назад

      Hi Ray, in general, no issues with the running shoes (I brought a pair of sandals as well)...however it would have been a bit nicer to have lite hikers on for some of the hike-a-bike sections. Note too that I wore booties over my running shoes when it was wet and/or raining, which worked out really well. I used the contact info for the Orvando caboose/tee-pee from the ACA BicycleNavigator app's GPS files. I highly recommend purchasing the app files from ACA, and the physical maps too...a bit of an expense, but well worth it IMHO. Hope this helps!

    @reinhartbigl367 Thank you for the honor of accompanying you on this amazing journey. I have not skipped one minute. Infact your journey was so fun i watched them all in 2 days. 😅I remember the first episode and I really see the difference in you and how confindent you looked in the end of the series. We got a saying in Norway that is directly translated as "Well Blown Journey" and it truely was an amazing viewing experience. You can proudly say that you have one of the most documented GDMBR on YT. Only thing I really missed was some live commentary on top of the videos instead of all the loud music and all the text. But I respect that it would be too much work in the edit. Maybe next time? 😀 Happy travels in the future. ❤from Norway - Marius

    Way Cool Bud. As others here this is great valuable information to gather for my 7/25 attempt. I watched all 53 episodes and really like what you caught here. You took the time to capture the GDMBR at a comfortable pace and shown what not many others can show when in a hurry. I have questions and hope you can share some answers in a session someday soon. TY and rock on.

      Thanks bud!! Glad you enjoyed it and that you feel it'll help in the planning of your ride in '25! You may notice at first that the clips weren't as long, but as I continued in post production, I figured that "it's the ride" that would be common to everyone who has ridden it or plan to...and to allow those who do not plan on doing the ride, to get a true sense of it...and so I extended the edits to include longer time on the sections (that said, I still cut out quite a bit from the original footage...). Thanks for hangin' in there for all 53 days...I know the audio quality was brutal in much of it (thank god for the RUclips studio's music selection...). I do plan on posting a wrap up video fairly soon...however if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask...I love answering questions! Cheers man!
