    Distance: 124km
    Ascent: 1151m
    Descent: 1427m
    End of day elevation: 2256m
    Weather; Sunny, 17°C
    I wasn't surprised at all that the temp was close to freezing and to see my tent covered in frost when I emerged from my tent...and it was such a beautiful, peaceful morning.
    I saw one car pass by during my usual morning routine.
    I took more time than usual to start packing up as I waited for the sun to breach the horizon to reap some semblance of warmth and to melt the frost on my tent fly. As mentioned in the video, I accidentally mixed my oatmeal with my coffee, and it was dry and could not be separated, I tried the combination...and it was virtually inedible!
    The ride south along the route was sublime...with beautiful views of the mountain range through which I'd ride that morning.
    Just as I was to enter the forest and start the first climb, I met a fellow rider named Jake, who was waiting for his friend to catch up. We chatted a bit about our rides and experiences, then I continued on...I figured we'd meet each other somewhere up the route.
    The climb was gradual and although the forest was lovely, I was missing the bit of heat that the sun was providing on that cold morning. I stopped at the Indian Creek Campground, as it was identified as having a water source...however as I rode around the campground, it was not clearly identified and I could not find it...so I carried on with what I had.
    The descent let me to paved Hwy 114, along which I rode for

    Such A joy of the day! What has to become of us, watchers of your GDMBR adventure videos, when it is finished…. We’ll have to make our own (GDMBR) adventures…😜

      Thank you so much for your complement and I'm really glad you are enjoying this series!...it makes taking the time to edit down all that video that much more enjoyable! I guess I'll need to just ride that route again! LOL!
      Have a great day!

    I wondered about your header picture, thanks for enlightening us!, It's a beauty. I am really enjoying your series, love the video detail of the route and surfaces, you are giving me a great understanding of what to expect!

      Thanks...really glad you're enjoying the ride! I figured the simple and at times extended POV format would be helpful to those who are planning the ride, as well as folks who relive their rides from the past.
      Cheers!

    Excellent video! I thought you were on to something with the coffee/oatmeal mix. One rider in our group rode a Surly ECR with 2.6" Maxxis Ikons. This summer I'll be on a Black Mountain Cycles, La Cabra so I can use racks front and rear with Revelate Designs Nano Panniers. Sticking with Maxxis Crossmark II and 2.25" tires. Beautiful section through there, you're almost to NM. I came across a few north bounders, they all said NM was the hardest state due to road surface and water sources.

      @reinhartbigl367  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks Mike! Wish I was onto something good with that mix...it was horrible LOL!! Sounds like you've got a sweet ride for this summer! 2.25" would be perfect for that ride! I hope you have enough capacity with those panniers...I tried 2x5L rear dry bags (identical to the front set) but found that I just didn't have the capacity to load up on food and water without having too many items strapped to my rack...but everyone travels differently! When do you think you'll depart?

      @@reinhartbigl367 Start date is July 2nd or 3rd. Re capacity, on 2021 ride, I used all frame bags, no racks. Started with 18 pound load with food, minus water. Very minimalist, but not as minimal as the racers. Clothes and gear I felt was the right pick, and comfy enough. It was water and food carry that I needed more capacity since I'm older and can't get across some of the longer resupplies in one or two days. Changing approach from hardtail Ti mtn bike to the racks and pannier (old school road tourist) so I'll probably be slower downhill than my hardtail with shocks, but I'll be more comfortable on the smoother, open sections with ok surfaces. A trade-off in some downhill speed for comfort and more capacity. If I take any extra comfort items, it might be a very small light tarp for sun and to double as a throw down for rest. I've used a piece of Tyvek for years as tent doormat, and throw to lie down on for a break, so I might stick with that again. Another luxury item might be that one beer you take for the night! Even a warm beer might be a good attitude adjuster after a rough day. Thanks again for that tip!

    Throughly enjoying al of your post! You are riding the trail at the same time of year I'm thinking. Aug-Sept. That ice on the tent is chilling. Were you good with the sleeping bag choice you made?

      Thanks, glad you're enjoying the videos and experience!
      In retrospect, I think that is probably the best time of year to do that ride....or perhaps I was just lucky...
      I had a down bag rated for zero degrees C (32 degrees F), was wearing head to toe fleece and a 3.2' sleeping pad...and I was cozy.

    • @reinhartbigl367
      @reinhartbigl367  5 месяцев назад +1

      That would be fun I'm sure! What part I liked most is a difficult question to answer...each area has its own attributes...perhaps I'll add some commentary when the series is complete to wrap it all up... ;-).

    That was an adventurous 24 hours with a crazy shack ogre and caffeinated oatmeal 🤢A bike swap enroute would be interesting 🤔

    • @reinhartbigl367
      @reinhartbigl367  5 месяцев назад

      It was indeed! I was already setup when I knocked on that door...and he was NOT nice. I told him after I would leave I the morning, he would never know I was there (as most if not all bikepackers would be), and he became even more belligerent... Some people are just not nice...
      I thought a lot about the possibility of the bike swap...but I am happy with the small ECR as I am at the upper limit of the recommended height range for that size, and as it is, the top tube is shorter, which allows me to sit a bit more upright so I can see the sights! Chers!

    I don't drink coffee, so there is little chance I'll have the same mishap, but I'm pretty sure I'd be able to fuck something else up 😅😅 Hey!! Look at the rock formation dead ahead 12:15 into the episode, and you'll see a face with a split down the middle.. Kind of looks like he had a reverse stroke 😄As for going on the ATV trail, from the view of your camera, it seems almost impossible to get a sense of how far away stuff is, like the ridges in the backgrond. The vegetation is low and the ridges are quite big, but with no known references for size in between or around, the only thing to make out of it, is if they're far away or v-e-r-y far away 😋 Another great day with great views and probably soothing temps from the cloudcover that came swooping in during the day. Thank you, and as usual, looking forward to the next one 🙂
    Cheers!

      Your a nice guy. I don’t ever ask i just do it. It’s just camping and i leave no trace so if they have a problem with it its there own personal ego problem and that’s not something I’m willing to cater too.

      Don't know how you do it without coffee... ;-)...that said, if I didn't drink coffee, I wouldn't have messed up that oatmeal!! Will have a look back at that rock formation...you have a keen eye! Yes, everything is so spread out in that area...mountains could be 5km's or 25km's away...
      Thanks A.K.!

      I guess I should have mentioned that it was on an inactive construction camp that was very quiet for the weekend...there was nobody around, not even a car, so I don't know how that guy would have gotten around... I was setup on a flat spot beside the cabin...and as you said, he would never have known I was there... Out of respect I packed up and left. Cheers!
