My ancestors were the lockeepers there.
How cool, do you have any good stories?
like the drone shots, would be really nice to see the line of the whole canal as a drone video - same with other disused canals, especially the Rother Navigation (branch to Midhurst) and the Arundel and Portsmouth; both sadly lost to time, but these three southern routes would've been a canal boaters dream. I miss the Wey and Arun and hope in my own life-time it gets completed.
@@paulmessis1094 I used to make them but the problem was the videos didn’t get many views so they used to effect how RUclips recommended the main videos. I now offer drone only videos showing all the drone footage and more to members (narrowboat level and above)
Huge respect to all of the Wey and Arun volunteers, none of whom will live long enough to see the completed project. A true labour of love in a spirit of hope.
@@allangriffiths9555 that’s the same for most restorations, cruising the cut did a video on the Stafford Riverway link this week which says the same.

@@misterglo1394 I believe there’s some dispute with the developers who claim low level development won’t pay for itself as they have contaminated soil to remove. They are trying to get apartments over more of the project

Winding hole, or wynding hole? Wynding I think since you wind the boats around.
@@charlo90952 pronunciation varies Wyn ding is how I was always told Wind 🌬️ ing is because they used to use the wind to help turn the boats It’s not winding as in wind a clock as many people pronounce as read
Heading north towards Guildford, other completed projects include a major road bridge (Compasses) giving access to Dunsfold Aerodrome (and the summit pound here had been fully now, by contractors). Then there are two lift bridges installed on a length of canal in water just south of Bramley. It's not yet navigable, but there is a circular walk, including part of the adjacent closed railway line that utilises the restored towpath.
@@PeterJewell2 are they the 2 that WRG have been working on?
@@CourtAboveTheCut - yes. Many WRG work parties take place to supplement the Trust's own groups - there's a different one each day of the week!
I'm a (distant) volunteer and have worked on several of the projects, including Compasses Bridge and Birtley. In your follow-up video you'll have to cover the sections both north and south of this video as there's plenty more to see!
@@PeterJewell2 I’m planning one south, I’m also planning one on some of the engineering as well as the sections north of here, I will try and spend a weekend down there soon.
@@PeterJewell2 different work parties from the trust? That’s good to here that it’s so active!
You missed a trick not heading 'south' to the next lock below Loxwood (although you did mention it). Brewhurst Lock was restored twice. The second time was during the bridge construction when the water level in the pound (and hence the fall of Brewhurst Lock) was dropped by 1.8m. It now has a most strange appearance as one set of gates were left original height to show how much had changed in the second rebuild.
@@PeterJewell2 I’ll be visiting for another video or 2, my plan was to end a video there. The section is closed atm though as they are relining the canal after a breach
@@CourtAboveTheCut - right, yes I've heard about that. It's making progress.
@@PeterJewell2 I’ve been offered access but as this was filmed in an evening I didn’t really have time.
The towpath resurfacing featured has now been completed all the way to Gennets Bridge Lock (the last one shown).
@@PeterJewell2 yes I saw, it looks great, I’ve been away on holiday this week so this video was produced before I went away so I couldn’t add a little update like I often do.
Lovely to see your update down here. The bricks are quite a different colour here. All beautifully re constructed locks. Thank you.
@@marilynbalderstone696 you see the same everywhere, it’s fun to see the different colours. The same as the soil, it always amazes me how red the soil is in the midlands, is so brown here in the south west.
I’m interested in canals and Napoleon (note spelling please) but I won’t watch this. If the author can’t be bothered to spell Napoleon’s name correctly, s/he's obviously so slapdash nothing else will be worth my time. It is frankly insulting to RUclips viewers to inflict such low grade material on them.
@@andrewcampbell4847 wow, I’m sure you’ve never made a mistake in your life. Good luck in your future endeavours and your perfect existence 😂
@@CourtAboveTheCut I have of course made mistakes - I'm 73 and still making them.. But I never showed such disdain for my readership/audience/viewers that I made such an elementary spelling mistake in the title. Napoleon was one of the most significant men who ever lived. More books have been written about him than any other historical figure, except Jesus Christ. If you don't respect your viewers, you might at least have had enough respect for him to get his name right. My existence is far from perfect. I'll be dead from motor neurone disease before this time next year.
@@andrewcampbell4847 I respect my viewers, I have met many of them on walks and you won’t hear any of them say I’ve disrespected them. You are the disrespectful one here, I don’t see you producing content for free, taking both time away from your family as well as money out of your pocket. Go watch someone else it doesn’t bother me, as you aren’t watching my content i’m not disrespecting my viewers.

How did I miss this one…. Once again. Very interesting. How do you find the time, I’ve got an interest in the Ashby, Derby, Lichfield and Nottingham Canals and would love to get some videos done on the subjects, I’ve had one in ‘production’ since 2023. Kudos as always!

@@CourtAboveTheCuthaha, I just added more txt… you were too quick with your reply …. Great work.
@@thoughtsonnarrowboatingwit3882 I work a lot! I’ve always been a workaholic, I have a business as well as this and 2 young kids. Somehow I get it in but I spend most days working on the tools, walking canals or editing/paperwork for about 12 hours a day, sometimes 14. When I go away filming I tend to go for about 3 days where I’ll 6am-10pm just driving, filming and sorting footage in the hotel. On the canals, I’ve got loads on the Lichfield, it’s one of my favourite. Derby and Ashby are both on my radar, I’ve got plans to visit both before the end of the year. The Nottingham is a little more difficult, apart from the Beeston cut there isn’t much to show. I’ve got 3 videos filmed on the Grantham which will come at some point one I’m going to have to split into 2 videos as it cover about 8-10 miles of the Trent end and it’s just way too long to leave as one video.
@@CourtAboveTheCut madness, I work mostly nights all over the Midland Mainline, all my ‘kids’ are grown up now and while I do live full time on my boat, I find it takes a good bit of time to edit footage to make it half decent… The time I do get to look into stuff like the Ashby is priceless, I’ve got on coming out very soon, I lived on the Ashby for a year, got a lot of investment over there …. Around about 1965 mom took me up to Lichfield on the train from Erdington and we intended joining this canal at Birmingham Road and walking from there in a westerly direction.
