Which EXPENSIVE Islay Is The Best? | Blind Tasting
I Love Islay Scotch Whisky, but I'm not quite sure what my actual favorite is of my expensive bottles. I have Bruichladdich Octomore 13.1, Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 18, Laphroaig 25 (2019), and Ardbeg 25 today. All ranging from $200 to $900. I decided to pit these against each other in a blind tasting to figure out which one I like the most! Some of the results make me sad but it was a fun experience!

    Blind tastings are a great way to educate your palate, especially if you feel like you're in a rut with whisky. I would have swapped out the Octomore for something a bit softer, because it was obviously pretty easy to pick out that one instantly. Regardless, those are all great drams and I'm looking forward to the next one - cheers!

      I was focusing on price and I don't think I have another peated islay near the $200 mark. You are right it was very easy to distinguish, I think maybe if Mrs. GC put it in the middle. I will definitely be doing this again though in the future!

    Cool video. I think that Caol Ila 12 would be better than Laphroaig at the beginning. I'm afraid that a beginner could be discouraged after trying Laphroaig, which is very intense. Caol Ila has a milder character and therefore (in my opinion) it is better understood by novices. On the other hand, I started my adventure with whiskey with Balvenie 12 yo and I didn't like it (I liked these whiskeys only after a few months) and only tasting Ardbeg 10 yo made me start liking whiskey xD. Greetings 👍🥃

      I agree on the softer caol Ila peat. The only issue is availability in the states. I never see it, but I think as far as experiences go, laphroaig is the “classic”. Completely agree on caol Ila though it’s very soft for peat, same could be said about bowmore. Its funny Ardbeg 10 made you start liking whisky 😅 I started with Aberlour and never turned back! • @glencairngamer
      @glencairngamer Месяц назад

      I think it depends on what you want,to say "bourbon is cheaper than scotch". Generally $50 for bourbon is standard but there are tons of $40-$60 scotches that are great. Scotch prices usually depict age, but there are insane tariffs as well. The allocated bourbon market is something else entirely though...

    • @steveno7058
      @steveno7058 Месяц назад

      @@glencairngamer I’d say solid Bourbon starts at $25-$35 with stuff like Wild Turkey 101, Knob Creek and Buffalo Trace. Solid Scotch starts at $50-$60. Good high proof Bourbon starts at $50-$60 while Scotch starts at $100. Those price segments is where Bourbon has a big value advantage in the US

    • @glencairngamer
      @glencairngamer Месяц назад

      @steveno7058 $25 bourbon is just as good as $25 scotch, which is to say not 😂 I can't say I agree that "good solid scotch starts at $100" But I agree with the general sentiment that bourbon has cheaper price tags depending on what you want. Several $70 and under scotches that are superb: bruichladdich classic laddie, glenmorangie Quinta ruban, port Charlotte 10, any compass box blend under $70, any Ian macleod for $40 are super solid. Point being I don't think that "solid scotch starts at $100". There are a lot out there way under that they just don't get talked about a lot. I enjoy civil discussions like this though I'm not on th defensive FYI 😅

    • @steveno7058
      @steveno7058 Месяц назад

      @@glencairngamer solid cask strength Scotch starts at $100. No Scotch at $25 can touch Wild Turkey 101 or Knob Creek 9. No cask strength Scotch at $60 can touch Knob SiB or Rare Breed.

      @steveno7058 at that point you are kind of splitting hairs. I could say the same thing about an 18 year scotch at $150 blowing the doors off an Elijah Craig 18 that you will A. Never find and B. If you do it's $300-$500 Like I said there are great options in both categories which is why I enjoy both. When you get into specifics like that it's easy to sway an argument in either favor. I'm OK with more bourbon being "cheaper" and we need these tariffs to drop a bit so scotch is more "inviting" to whisky drinkers

    Great video! The comparison of Scotch and Bourbon is always a heated one, but I appreciate you went with a dollar comparison too. I'm finding that when I purchase, I'm always considering the value, not just the spirit as it is. Comparing two higher-proof, more fruity/approachable really let this video work. There's strange dichotomy of $100 in Bourbon vs Scotch. There seems to be a slight point of diminishing returns when you get past $100 for bourbon (unless you're going for a unique/rare bottle), while in Scotch, it feels like once you get to $100 you're getting into the really interesting territory. Obviously pricing is regional (whether country, state, province, etc). Keep up the great work!

    • @glencairngamer
      @glencairngamer Месяц назад

      Thanks for the well thought out comment and view my friend! Yea the debate will never end but it only makes sense with comparable proof and prices. I agree 100% on the diminishing returns with bourbon at $100. It’s such a young spirit that unless you want a 23 year pappy or 20 year Michters you don’t need to throw more than $100 at one. Scotch age is obviously an older market and $100 is definitely the sweet spot up to about $200 for truly older whiskies or rare releases that are finished in special casks. Cheers 🥃

      Oh! I'm probably gonna roll up with either a smoky islay since I think the DLC has a lot of fire influence, or my 67% Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye 😂

    I always want a lot of peat but this is a fave for an unpeated Islay scotch! I offer this scotch to many people who want to try an unpeated scotch. They often love it. I do really enjoy it it but admit I prefer scotch to be less sweet. Not a sweet fan overall. I do like some scotch single malts with Oloroso or PX casking sometimes although right now I am loving my peat and Bourbon casking! I had too much PX and Oloroso over the past while. I am always up for a classy sophisticated scotch, deeply complex, to analyze, and of course the rock em' sock em' peat bombs!!!

      What a great thought out comment! Love the peat bombs! I also agree on sometimes wanting something that isn’t sweet. I’m a huge Oloroso fan but sometimes you need to mix it up. This is definitely a favorite unpeated islay love it!

    I love the transparency in Compass Box. The Peat Monster isn't bad. This Ballechin didn't blow me away but I have a couple of bottles. This Bruichladdich is lovely and I have several that will be enjoyed over the years. It takes a long while! I am a health nut so I drink occasionally. Maybe take a break while you recover from surgery! Cheers!

      @@glencairngamer 🙂 The Penelope was a disappointment but I have experienced that before with Penelope. I am not a big fan of Bourbon but I hoped this one would me enjoyable for what I ended up paying locally. My husband felt very disappointed too. Friends as well! Cheers! Oh! The Marsala Ballechin seems to be an expression that some people like. I just hoped for more! I prefer Oloroso to Marsala.

      @christinecamley if you want a good Penelope for cheap the architect I highly recommend. I enjoy Marsala but they aren’t available a lot around me. The 13 year bunnahabhain Marsala is magnificent

      @@glencairngamer I will try the Architect! Thanks so much! I don't mind paying a lot if it's delicious and so well done! Yes the Bunna Marsala is amazing! I am loving the Lagavulin 11 Offerman 4th Edition. I bought a case but I am a Lagavulin nut! Oysters, charred lemon, gorgeous Lagavulin smoke and brine! So much here. It's good you're back. The new bottles look fantastic. PS. Have you ever had a Laphroaig out of a sherry cask? I was wondering if I would buy one, but the prices of Laphroaig from sherry casks are very high and I don't know if it's worth it. Greetings 👍🥃

      Yo - sherries frog is wonderful stuff. The 10 year is usually cask strength, so that plus the smaller production for the sherry casks means it’s gonna be more than the standard 43% mostly bourbon cask frog. If you can find the PX travelers release it’s one of the best NAS whiskies out there for the money. The standard 10 sherry CS is great as well, though a bit more expensive. It’s sweet sherry smoke, what’s not to like?! 🥃🥃🥃
