Sailing Indiana
Великобритания
Добавлен 16 ноя 2020
We are Lauren and Chris - a couple from the UK with the dream of breaking away from the London Rat Race to live a life at Sea. We took the plunge and bought a beautiful (at least we think so...) 1989 Gib'Sea 372 sailboat, with our only sailing experience being a 10 day intensive course.. 3 months before! This channel hopes to document our journey, day to day experiences, lessons and adventures as we prepare to one day set sail around the globe. We still have a little way to go and welcome support from any who might help guide us. We hope you will come on this jouney with us, as we go from complete novices to experienced ocean tamers!

BOATLIFE 2023: Is It REALLY For SAILORS? An Honest Review I Ep. 62
Does it have a Helm position in the Cockpit. Would have been nice to get a bit of an idea of the layout below decks
I'm assuming something serious has happened as no update. Hope you are both OK.
Hi, it is really nice watching your videos. I am actually going to install the same full set of Raymarine including autopilot. You gave me the great idea to just bolt the mounting foot of the linear drive on the transom of the boat. I am going to consider this seriously. What have you finally done with the new “tri” transducer? Installed it or used the old ones? Why where the professionals giving a negative advise to place the new one in the exciting tube? Different dimensions or… Good luck with your journeys, your boat really looks like a Bavaria 340 /370. But apparently it is a different brand. 😅
Always buy two. One for the repair and one to hold in stock as a spare - assuming of course that the shop has two in the first place!
Great video! I loved the videography. Congrats on your recent marriage ❤. Graham & Cata (sv serenity)
Thanks so much Guys🫶🏼 Trying to find time to edit the next instalment, but we’ll get there 😂 Hope you’re doing well!!
You missed out the mosaics at the railway station, second to none
Oh no, we didn’t make it to see them! Will definitely plan for next time!
Nice marina, cheaper than Cascais. Well I've lived in Lisbon for 18 months and never been to that restaurant, will have to give it ago. I've heard that Sines isn't very friendly towards foreign boats, be interesting to see how you get on. Fair winds.
Thanks so much for watching!! We definitely loved Oeiras, it was so welcoming and the fresh bread really made all the difference. Cascais is beautiful, but definitely a more expensive marina😅 Definitely worth a visit to the restaurant, it’s a fun trip across the river and the food is incredible! We will show sines in the next video. The marina was closed at the time, so we had to anchor. It sounds like that was the best thing to do then!haha
Food looks delicious, long time between videos.Good luck with the Orcas.
Thanks for watching!! Yeah we’ve been struggling to keep up with editing, want to have a push to get them out more regularly tho😬🤞🏼
Hi guys. Hope alls well with you both. Always enjoyed your channel.Quick question ....what size (M? And length) did you usefor the window fixings. I have a 1991 352 with the same issue? Fair winds. Adam
Keep SN and Navionics as each have their own strong points. It’s not that expensive given the cost of charts.
Gosport was our home berth from 2005 to 2022 now down at Dartmouth
We loved Dartmouth! We almost wintered there, but then Falmouth let us stay. Really enjoyed Salcombe too.
Need to turn music down, it’s supposed to be background
Yeah we had a dodgy GoPro back then and didn’t realise how poor the footage was going to come out from this series of episodes🥲 So we might have thought some music would hide it a bit… It doesn’t 😂 Hope you stick with it though, as we learn a bit more about editing along the way! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Loving your channel! Tomorrow we sail off from Peniche to Cascais.
Thanks so much🫶🏼⛵️ Enjoy your sail, fair winds!
you should be flying the "Q" flag until you check in to the country.
Nope. France advise not to fly it and same with Galicia region of Spain.
❤❤🥰🥰
It is good to have a morning person and a night owl on board, especially for overnighters and ocean crossings. I know a couple like that. He is on watch from 6am to 6pm. She from 6pm to 6am. And I noticed you guys are already looking at bigger boats and cats. Well, I started with 18 foot. Then 24, 34 and 40. Following Brody from Jaws: "We need a bigger boat!" However, my future boat will be 24ft again. And why? Sailing a smaller boat means more fun, to me. And my opinion on cats: As far as sailing is concerned it is not the real thing. Having driven motorcycles in my early life, sailing a cat is like riding a Kawasaki with a sidecar. But again, my personal views. Cats are comfortable. Sure. The biggest con is that you cannot sail upwind, whatever others may tell you. Loads of other cons but I won't mention those unless you ask. Nice channel. Keep it up.
As a sailor I would find it of more interest if you: 1) filmed the mooring to, and leaving of, the pontoons 2} ran through an outline of each passage plan 3} explained your sail plan and 4) filmed the unfurling & furling of head and mainsails.
Thanks for watching! Great comment, thanks for the tips and we’ll be sure to work on it👍🏼⛵️
When was your last MOB exercise unplanned?
We’ve never had an unplanned MOB, luckily! But it’s something we should probably plan as a refresher
@@SailingIndiana i would suggest it long over due for both of you.... just do it out of the blue( do not jump in🤣) and see what you dont know.... and how confident you are on the other person... its fun in a scary way
Nice to see you sailing down the Portuguese coast. Cascais is an expensive marina compared to Oeiras and the Lisbon marinas.I know this isn't in real time so I've probably missed you in Lisbon. I've been here for 18 months now and did my competent crew course here and will go on to do my day skipper. Watch out for the Orcas if you are going to the Med. They like to chew on your rudder! Fair winds
Thanks so much!! Yes Cascais was a little bit expensive for us, Oeiras was great though and they bring you fresh bread every morning!! Really loved our time there. Yes we’ve moved down the coast now, we need to catch the videos up to real time! Orca have been on our mind for sure, you’ll see in the next few episodes 😅
Look forward to every new episode. Love following your adventures
Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment!! ☺️
Welcome to my city. Also very close to Oeiras. My sailboat is in south Algarve/ Vilamoura. if you need any tips let me know
It’s such a beautiful place!! Thanks so much, we will☺️🙌🏼
Well done, the saloon looks much lighter, here's hoping it never needs doing again.
Lovely sailing, appreciate you sharing.
Thanks so much for watching!☺️🙏🏼
wath a mesh on board
Great to see you getting better at video production and more confident at sailing, you are coming on in leaps and bounds. Envious! Oh criticise pizza for breakfast… never 😊
@@Sailing_Antrice thank you so much! We definitely feel like we’ve come a long way in a short space of time 🙏🏼 haha, pizza for breakfast is always a good choice.
On leaving fenders on deck while sailing: Just leave them if you're not bothered by them and ignore people that might mock you for that.
@@gertboerman3666 excellent advice! A mantra for most things in life! Thank you 🙏🏼
Great video guys. You keep getting better and better. Love the tour!
@@wizquack4505 thank you so much! Nazare was incredible! Definitely one of our favourite spots so far ⛵️
Aaaww Nazare ❤❤❤ Go on Lauren 🍕 and 🍍, breakfast of sailors 😂 Just got a ptsd flashback of Cabo Raso and its 4 metre waves with 35 kts wind, never again 😂🫣
@@Louise-i8p isn’t it such an awesome place? 🏄🏼♀️ haha! Yes! I’m glad I have a pineapple pizza allie 🫶 Wow! 4metre waves! No thank you! 🫠
Hey, you guys are probably way past Peniche area now but if you ever get the chance to go to Berlengas island nature reserve it is stunning! Great surf in Peniche as well ☺️
@@Sailing_Honeybee hey! Aw next time we’ll definitely make sure we visit! It looks like an awesome place ⛵️
Do not miss that cool weather sailing. We summer at our cabin while S/V Drifter sleeps at Indiantown. Maybe we will all meet in the Caribbean someday?
@@montanadan2524 always chilly in the mornings and at night! Summer in the cabin sounds amazing! Yes, we really hope we get to the Caribbean one day! ⛵️
in portugal water is orca ? is not in marea neagra as well ?
We loved Nazare ❤, it was just by chance we berthed there as we had just about had enough of the swell for that day 🤢 We feel your pain with the fantasy wind forecast, get the motor on again 😬😕 Another great video guys, we really look forward to them 😊 Oeiras marina - can't thank you enough for that recommendation - perfect ❤😊
Nice video guys, although you do realise that wearing a baseball cap if over the age of 15 reduces intelligence by 25% and wearing it backwards reduces it by a further 25%.
Haha, thanks for the comment, noted and will decide what to do with this information😂 Long hair and wind = poor vis… so it’s baseball cap or the razor I’m afraid!
Thanks for sharing the adventure! What year/model are you sailing?
Thanks for watching! She’s a 1989 Gib’Sea 372. Still going strong 💪🏼
U after G is mute in Portuguese -> Migel -> Figeira
As long as you get where you are going without breaking anything it’s a great sail! Love watching! Can’t wait for a tour of Nazare.
That’s actually VERY true😂 We’ve got to celebrate the small wins too! Thanks so much for watching ⛵️
Nazare is a huge and scary wave in the winter. Those guys and girls who ride them are pros for sure. Good to see you so much more confident in the sailing skills. Caribbean is calling.
It was a bit scary on the approach, even though we knew the big wave wouldn’t be there😅 Yep, each sail we feel more and more confident!
Good to watch your progress. Bucklers Hard is a great mooring and the Solent can be a challenge with strong tides and lots of shipping. You might consider stowing the fenders once under way as keeping the side decks clear avoids a potential trip hazard - important if sudden action needed. And personally I always wear shoes to avoid accidentally stubbing toes/getting cuts etc. It’s all about avoiding possible mishaps. Keep sailing!
Nice! Hope you enjoyed my home town. Sailed dingyhs for 20 years there. Usualy the wind comes from the North, open up those sails and get a spi up 😜
Amazing!! Definitely a beautiful place. Would love to do some dingy sailing again ⛵️🚀
Long live Pastel de Nata😄
We ate soooo many😂🙌🏼

Nice to see you in Portugal, hope you enjoy your stay. Bons ventos e mares tranquilos...

We were there 2 weeks ago in @sailing_gentoo. That pot field outside fig de foz is crazy! We went round it. Glad you got through!

Orcas are a type of dolphin; they're the largest of the species.
Yes it’s crazy to think that they are just big dolphins really! Or at least, relatives to dolphins
Wow , a thumbnail without a bikini pic, on a sailing channel, is this possible?? must be AI surely
Haha, yep we had to add the clothes with AI, painstakingly work but worth it 😂
Nicely done another well executed passage.
Thanks very much! We always hope for a bit more wind so we can use the motor less, but the forecast never seems to play ball. Enjoying the adventures, nonetheless
@@SailingIndiana well the wind always blows from the place you are trying to get to or too little or too much. But we sailors are optimists living for the rare times when it’s just right. But you had an uneventful trip and got in safe before the light faded. That’s a win.
@@Sailing_Antrice so true! Those perfect conditions never come! But yes a safe sail is a win! 🙏🏼
Nice video guys :) We saw an orca off Galicia so totally understand the apprehension! Need to get our bag of sand ready 😂
Thanks very much! Oh wow, that sounds a little too close for comfort 😳 The bag of sand is our third crew member now😂 A small comfort, but highly recommended!haha
No marina when I entered this river. We had to tie up to the town wall on the port side. Locals told us to move because we were right on top of a big rock! Bill
Oh wow! I guess it’s lucky the locals let you know… Good marina now tho
Wow, Porto looks great 👌 we are hot on your heels (video wise) and Porto is our next destination 😊 I think we had your berth at Gijon 😂 The orcas though ☹️😳, stressing heck
Oh brilliant to hear!! You’ll love Porto, definitely worth checking out Matoshinos Marina if you’ll be there any length of time. But if a flying visit, probably worth heading up the Douro to anchor/berth. We loved our little spot in Gijon😅 Hope the facilities refurb has finished? We’ll try and post some more videos so you can watch them before you get to the next place😂🤞🏼
Oh yes please, we have been sail stalking you for ideas on the coastline of where to pitch up for the night 🤣 We'll have a check out of the marinas as we are not sure how long we will be there at Porto but that's great advice, thank you 😀 Absolutely Gijon ❤️, I was just happy to get my washing done 🤣 definite boat win that day🏆 🙌
@@Louise-i8p we loved this part of the coast! Also go to Oeiras Marina! It’s cheaper than Cascais and closer to Lisbon. They also bring you free Portuguese rolls in the morning 😍 plus there’s a swimming pool right next door! Safe sails! ⛵️
@@SailingIndiana fabulous 👌 thank you, that's now on my passage plan 😊👍
I notice at 13:37 seconds that your fire blanket is not in a good position. If you ever have a galley fire, you possibly would not be able to get it out of the wall fixing. On my yacht, I have two fire blankets, one in the forepeak and the second at the companionways steps from the cockpit, both some distance from the galley which is amidships. In a panic situation, it might burst into flames when you are away from the galley and to then being able to get back and successfully get hold of the fire blanket is very important. I did two fire fighting courses in the Royal Navy at HMS Phoenix Fire-fighting Training establishment and have done refresher courses in the Civil Service.
Thanks so much for the comment, it’s definitely good hearing this from someone with experience/qualification in the field. We’ll have a think about an alternative location! It’s also good for others who might read this comment 👍🏼
@@SailingIndiana It wasn't a dig at you specifically, it was just a observation. I have seen far, FAR worse, where the fire blanket has been mounted directly BEHIND the cooker. There would be no chance of using it in a galley fire as the crew would be beaten back by the heat and the flames, not to mention any spilt fat from the pan that is on fire. Imagine that on a rolling yacht in heavy seas and not being able to get at the fire blanket, it doesn't bear thinking about. Fires in the galley seem to start when no one is watching, they just might have stepped away for just a moment or two and when they return, they can't get near the fire. :(
@@SailingIndiana It is best to have the fire blanket at the bottom of the companionway so that anyone arriving down from the cockpit can grab it straight away on their way to tackling any fire. Possibly near the VHF/SSB radio near the chart table. Also, if the duty cook is badly burnt (clothes on fire), the helmsman can grab it when attempting a rescue as he/she arrives below deck. Companionway steps to the galley can be no more that half a second or so, away from the fire if that, and anyone running FROM a galley fire would automatically make for the cockpit to either get out, get help or get fresh air. If the galley is on fire, the last thing you need to do is stand there, trying to get the frigging fire blanket out of its canister or valise. If in a moment of doubt GET OUT. You might always be able to think and return to the fire a few of moments later WITH the fire blanket, once you have gathered your thoughts.
