  • Hey Crew! Welcome back to Sailing Indiana! 🌊⚓
    Join us on our latest adventure as we sail from Matosinhos to Figueira de Foz along the beautiful Portuguese coast. This episode is packed with excitement as we are not only on Orca watch, but we came across more dangers...🐋🎣 So, its safe to say, Orca attacks were not our main concern!
    If you are not familiar with the orca attacks (interactions) -- since 2020 the Orca's around the Spanish and Portuguese Coast have been 'playing' with sailboats, biting off rudders and unfortunately, in some instances, boats have been sunk. So, not ideal when your sailboat is also your full time home!
    Come along for the ride as we navigate through tricky waters, share some laughs, and soak in the stunning coastal views.
    It's all part of the fun (and challenges) of life at sea! Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just love the ocean, you won't want to miss this one.

    Nice! Hope you enjoyed my home town. Sailed dingyhs for 20 years there. Usualy the wind comes from the North, open up those sails and get a spi up 😜

    No marina when I entered this river. We had to tie up to the town wall on the port side. Locals told us to move because we were right on top of a big rock! Bill

      @@SailingIndiana well the wind always blows from the place you are trying to get to or too little or too much. But we sailors are optimists living for the rare times when it’s just right. But you had an uneventful trip and got in safe before the light faded. That’s a win.

      Oh brilliant to hear!! You’ll love Porto, definitely worth checking out Matoshinos Marina if you’ll be there any length of time. But if a flying visit, probably worth heading up the Douro to anchor/berth.
      We loved our little spot in Gijon😅 Hope the facilities refurb has finished?

    What do you do with the sand?

    • @SailingIndiana
      @SailingIndiana  Месяц назад

      Good question!
      It’s a trick the local fishermen have used for some time, to keep the orca away from fishing nets and their tuna. You chuck some sand overboard and, apparently, it disorientates the orca and they back off!
      There have been numerous reports from sailors who have tried it and said it worked.
      We’ll try anything we can to keep our rudder intact😂🤞🏼

      @@SailingIndiana You have a skegged rudder, but what sort of construction? Do you know? I've seen spade rudders chewed off. Would the skeg and rudder post help prevent total rudder destruction?

      @SailingIndiana  Месяц назад

      @@rickkwitkoski1976 it’s all fibre glass with possibly a timber core rudder. We think the skeg or semi-skeg would make a big difference! Or at least give you more time (more impact) before you were in trouble 😬
