Hi there amigo's! When your VHF and/or AIS is underperforming, 99.9% of the times this has to do with a bad connection in the antenna. This is good news, because that means that in 99.9% of the times fixing this problem can be quick, easy and cheap if you follow these easy steps. All you need is a soldering machine, an UHF connector (PL 259) and you 50 ohms antenna cable (RG58), and soldering t...

In this episode I make a custom motor lift with some Harken blocks and Dyneema line. Since I want to sail the world solo, I want to be able to lift and lower my engine in and out of the water easily from the cockpit. This will reduce stressful moments cruising in and out of marina's, and so will greatly contribute to my safety. Thanks for watching! Become a member of my channel: ruclips.net/cha...

Mooi dat je dit deelt man, inspireert.
Niiice. Specs pls.
I had such a system on my IF, threw it out after installing the electric motor (no need for a pulley any more). It was already a pain in the ass to pull up with 8mm PP rope. So why use dyneema for it? It's expensive, you don't need to lift around 1,5t but 50 kg at a max, which any cheap 6 or 8 mm rope will do and it's more glitchy than anything else which makes me doubt whether the cleat will hold it. And its a pain to pull. You also might want to think whether you want to install the blocks further inwards, so you can pull the engine over the rim and the pulley is not in the way of the engine.

Adding solder to the wire before soldering it to the joint is called “tinning”. Tinning makes it much easier to use.
Thanks mate! 😁
Radar has come on a long way to be able to even consider fitting on such a small / light yacht. Be interested to hear whether the additional weight high up and windage causes any significant issue. How about electric current drain. I guess good to have, but with gps charts and AIS, is it now that worthwhile. Likewise, wind meter…what is wrong with the back of your neck and a streamer on the shrouds. Also I would be wary of putting more holes in the mast, normally the site for stress propagation and failure. But please don’t take these comments negatively, you have a lovely boat, and are sailing, or will be very shortly (I am still fixing my catamaran, perhaps wish I had bought one a bit smaller in better order)
Thanks for watching my friend! The comments and questions are very welcome! In the last year I have been a boat electronics salesman and installer, and I’m liking it so much that I started experimenting with anything i can get my hands on. I get crazy discounts and use a lot of used stuff aswel. I also have AIS, am installing 300 watts of solar and have a battery capacity of 230AH. I’m sailing a lot of racing boats of other people in order to learn, and I just came back from delivering a yacht from Netherlands to Spain. I think I got so used to having a digital wind meter I wanted one, and why not, I love trimming the sails all the time, so I enjoy constantly observing shifts in wind direction and speed. I will take this boat to London soon, and will find out if I over did it. Hope you stay around my channel to give your honest feedback and comments like these. I love to hear them! Thanks again! Fair winds!
@@LowBudgetSailing well lucky you! I am generally of the KISS persuasion, but would be tempted in your position. If you don’t use instruments you sail by feel more quickly. I recall on my first cruises, as a young lad, steering a very careful compass course, now I just steer, and glance at the compass occasionally
Hopefully I’ll sail with as much confidence and feel as you do very soon!
Seams an odd place for sealant. I would have thought it needs a permanent grp joint?
Hi there! Thanks for watching amigo. This is exactly how this is done for the Marieholm IF 😁
@@LowBudgetSailing sorry to ask..but what is that sealant doing?

Are you letting all the scraped Sikkaflex just drop into the water?
No mate, trying my best to drop as little as possible!
"The never ending list" is a very true statement when you own a boat, no matter the size of the boat there is ALWAYS something to do on them hahaha.
In the Netherlands we say "Koop een boot, Werk je dood". Thanks for watching my friend!
OK, but you can make the list shorter through your choices. Eliminating thru-hull and thru-deck fittings, switching from sheet tracks to blocks/low-friction rings, switching from steel to synthetic rigging, switching from inboards to outboards, tiller instead of a wheel, sealed cockpit instead of lockers, hanks not rollers, bungee instead of hinged cabinetry, soft shackles instead of steel etc. There are many modifications you can make to any boat, and criteria when choosing a boat to buy, which reduce the number of maintenance items and make many of the remaining ones much easier.
Wat vet je bent zo gruwelijk bezig moat!💪
Ey pik! Thanks 😊
First off, isn’t the wind meter holder blocking the lantern? You talk about doing what you like and letting it become your job, vacation as a job. But i’ll tell you a short story why I think people need to separate job and vacation. Many, many, many years ago I used to “work” with stage lighting as a hobby on a local amateur theater, it was my hobby and I liked it a lot, it was fun and made me a lot of nice friends. But that led after some years to a professional career working at large national theaters and stages with many great (famous) artists, musicians and actors. My hobby and relaxation had become work, and that was fun at the beginning, like most jobs. But after a while it became my everyday life and a job is a job, my hobby had become my boring 9-5 job (Yeah, I never worked 9-5 but rather 1 til midnight every day…). I had lost my hobby and joy for this. I’m now, 20 years or so later, at another bus stop where I wonder what to do with my life, but that’s another story on the same matter, another interest becoming a job. So to conclude, never let anything you think is joyful and fun become your everyday life because one day it will be boring and you lost the joy of your life.
Thanks for watching and the comment mate! Totally agree with you! I guess I was a bit too enthusiastic. I guess what I meant saying was that the most important thing I have learned in life lately is to follow my heart, always. When you make decisions that are fully backed by your heart, passion, love, there is no mistakes to be made. These days I am truly jumping in the deep, making decisions my parents (and many others) don't understand, but everything is turning out just as I want it and better even. All of this contributing to a state of happiness, instead of stress. ps. The wind meter isn't blocking the the lantern. Hoping to see you in the next episode amigo!
@@LowBudgetSailing What I mean is that there is a very, very thin line between the joy of being able to get paid and even live off your hobby or interest and when it becomes your only source of income and the stress that puts on you not getting enough to get food or other important costs. But yeah, I would really love to sell (almost) everything I own and live off the savings from that but at the moment my most important goal in life is to give my kids a good life and and a good education and for that I need to stay at one place (near school and friends) and just keep on working with something ordinary...

Doesn't sound silly to me. You have very good plan, I think. With your captain's ticket you can find a job everywhere in Caribbean. Boat electronics and electricians also are very good options for work. There was a cruisers here announced that they make picas and deliver them with the dinghy - you could do something like this too. Plenty of options and if somewhere is not for you, just pick the sails up. Probably you will meet many cruisers that will tell you how small is your boat... you deserve bigger boat... and things like this. Better dont listen them - you have your boat, proven design and build, fully equipped for cruising and ready to go. Bigger boat it is not better boat especially if it not set and equipped for cruising. Love that acordeon rivet gun, I have same and its working like a beast! I would check regularly that mast area around the radar for little cracks - think to many and close holes there and the pressures are big. You have great boat! Fair winds and Good luck!
Thanks again for watching my friend! I always look out to read your comments. Appreciate it very much! Fair winds amigo
Thank you for this. I bought myself an IF last year around my birthday, very little experience and sailed solo first time last week. But all the maintenance is still something that feels like an obstacle to me, just watching vids of others doing it helps massively, you always pick something up.
Glad it was helpful my friend, I feel you! If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me on instagram, I’m always happy to help. I will do my best to continue making nice vids 😁
Beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
@@LowBudgetSailing I'm not a sailor but I've looked extensively into the boat that I someday want to get. Keep us posted
Ah nice! I needed to this to my Centaur a week ago, I built a "thing" I saw in internet which is a whooden pole with a winch in one end that works kind of the spy giek you used but it sticks to the foot of the mast with a strip to prevent it from moving and with the winch you can slowly pull it down, I believe my mast is 6meters but as you mentions it "looks" not so heavy.... but they are very heavy haha. Good that you could make it work man!
Thanks mate, I guess there is many ways to do it, but the thought of dropping it is just terrifying😵😂 I just saw that my windex is stuck… damn it!
I love the yellow hull. She's a lovely boat.
Thanks! It's the original gelcoat from 1975
Great idea with that whisker pole! 💡 Might try that trick too, thanks! 🙏🤙⛵
Nice right? Don't forget to keep the mast straight though, haha
Buddy see you soon
See you soon amigo 🥰
Hy guy good job... But before to weld the lift just vertical on the engine i will think if is better give a little angle inside. So when the engine comes up it can rotate a few orizontal. What do You think about? Sorry for bad English😊
Totally agree my friend! I just added the engine to test it, and actually it worked out fine, but if inclined will lift the engine a little bit further. However, vertical lift is less heavy than horizontal lift… don’t you think?
👍
Thanks for watching mate
Some years ago I had Folksong Folk boat and I made similar arangement on the stern, but first I instal my Hasler SP2 windvane. It was a bit tricky to have enough distance beteen the OB and WV so when the engin is up to not interupt the work of WV. I bought new Yamaha 2.5 long shaft and the boat, the windvane and me was very happy - very small OB and didnt interupt the WV. Good luck and Fair winds!
That sounds amazing my friend. I actually have a windpilot I want to install soon. So, thanks for the tip, I’ll double check if it doesn’t get in the way. Fair winds, thanks for watching!
@@LowBudgetSailing gess is Pacific light. For this you can chech Attila Vedo. It will be useful cause, as a space, positioning and distances FB 26 and H 22 are almost same in transom - H 22 its a bit smaller, but you have transomhung rudder, so the space should almost same. Atilla was very happy with his Pacific light. On my H 22 I had Sea Feather and it is a great machine. A bit heavier than Pacific light. Atilla crossed Atlantic and Pacific with his H 22 without big drama, as I remember.
Like a boss! 💪🤙⛵
Thanks mate 😁
Nice. But if that was my outboard the lift rope would catch the back of the engine due to where it attaches to the mount. Guessing you've checked. I still want one.
I just tested it with the actual Honda outboard engine, and it worked out very well. Maybe I’ll make some minor changes before I weld it, but the concept works as expected 🤩
How funny!
Gracias 😊
Nice one!! Ready to conquer the 7 seas! 💪🤙⛵
You and me both!
Great video! Brings back memories, I did this kind of training 12 years ago or something like that. Outside of Gothenburg, in the ocean. We had to plug a leaking “hull” halfway under water and a firehose spraying our faces with whatever we could find as plugs.
Wow!! Thats sounds super cool mate 🤣 and terrifying… but there is no better preparation than that. Thanks for watching again 😁
Dat is wat anders dan een dagje Duinrell 😉 lekker man. Gefeliciteerd 🥳

Thank you! Will do!
Goed bezig 😂❤

Leuk stel zijn jullie ❤
Volgende keer ga je mee!
The folky will never let you down. One of the best boats ever designed. I owned one for nearly 30 years. It would surf down large swells outside Sydney heads at well over hull speed and never look like broaching. A proper viking boat. Main thing is to keep the weight down. Not sure about that humongous outboard, do you really need one that big? I had a tiny one and even then would take it off the stern and put in the cabin sole when underway
Couldn't agree more! I already sold the 9.9hp engine, and bought a 6hp Honda instead. Also I changed engine brackets (check out one of my latest videos on it, its a beautiful system). Thanks for watching my friend 😁
Alright, nice engine bracket!
You are smart, I know 🤣🤣. Respect dat hij eindelijk goed zit!
Thanks vriend 😃
Good looking engine mount, but maybe a little bulky. I think you should have gotten rid of the entire pushpit to make room for the engine when sailing. In my opinion though, I think the IF is looking at its best without any guardrails, pulpit or pushpit. Just a clean deck. But I realize you would want to have something to hold on to on your big ocean voyages. And, by the way, I think Remy is wrong, on a small boat an outboard is much easier to handle and service and so on.
Thanks so much for watching amigo! I totally agree with you that the IF is much nicer with just a clean deck, but yes, as you say I want it for solo safety at sea.. At the moment I am remaking the pushpit so the engine fits under easily. Thanks for all the useful tips and help thinking as always, hope to see you soon!
