SDRE / Diary at London Bridge Studio
It's a strange thing, but sometimes bands will admit to being somewhat embarassed by the records that made them famous. I feel like I've heard some members of Sunny Day Real Estate at least admit dissatisfication with certain aspects of their classic debut Diary before, so I wasn't exactly surprised when they announced this re-recording earlier this year.

Mark Knopfler » One Deep River » BOKY Album Review

Let's talk about Mark Knopfler's latest LP, One Deep River! Mark Knopfler is One Deep River of music. At 74 years old, and with about 50 years of music behind him, the new songs just keep flowing, it seems, from a fathomless source. His latest solo album sounds a lot like the one that came before it. And the one that came before that. And quite honestly, that works for me! The bottom line is, t...

"New is old" or "old is new"? Whatever it means, we have new Sunny Day Real Estate, and I am reacting to it, with tears in my eyes, as any self-respecting emo guy would. On ATUM, is Billy Corgan sending us a message about the future (or lack thereof) of The Smashing Pumpkins? And how GOOD OR BAD can an album be at 33 tracks? With Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, you've gotta surrender to the journey of it all. Smashing Pumpkins’ 1995 double album is one of the best selling albums of all time, and to this day, is seen as a hallmark of the 90’s music scene, a key intersection of the alternative underground and mainstream pop culture. BUT…is it a highpoint? Is it TRULY the classic that many think it is? In this...

Very accurate. With 20 songs without hits, and including some other b-sides rearranged would have been enough. We've seen them hundreds of times in live acoustic sets. Songs of indigestion at some moments... a bad prelude for bono's solo act while Larry Mullen Jr. was on surgery. Bad decisions one afer another??

Ahem... To understand U2 is to strive to understand the nature of God, as they have tried to convey that relationship between man and the Creator through sound and sight (sometimes tactile if you made a show in which I made 2, I'm a nerd 🤓.) It is a dark to light relationship, and a lovelorn relationship.

There is an overwhelming sense of self-cannibalism to the Wall of Eyes album, especially in comparison with ALFAA. While there is no overt attempt to copy any of the songs themselves, the atmospherics they create are clearly identical, and Thom Yorke's vocals provide no surprises here as on the previous record ("Television", "Panavision"). It's all gauzy sonic coagulation. And furthermore, if one more person uses the word "jazz" in relation to either this trio, or it's drummer, Tom Skinner they're going to get their arses kicked personally by me. The term/genre simply does not fit. This isn't Blackstar, the swan song release by David Bowie, where we can clearly hear the acid-jazz leanings of Donny McCaslin's quartet permeating Bowie's muse as a kindred collaborator. Frankly, as far as drummers go, Radiohead's Philip Selway is TEN TIMES THE JAZZ DRUMMER SKINNER WILL EVER BE, period. Just hear Selway's contributions to Amnesiac - now THAT'S the work of a jazz-informed drummer. Enough of this fanboy exaltation, please...it's embarrassing.

First two albums i bought in Newcastle 1980, Autoamerican and regatta de blanc. Beds too big was a huge hit in uk at the time. It took me an entire year of going without school dinner to sabe up to by both on cassette. I didn't have a record player but my dad brought a tape recorder to record me and him goofing about and playing flute , bag pipes, mouth organ and piano and singing. When i went to what you guys called junior high and we called middle school i learnt from other kids that tape thing also played music cassettes ans loving walking on the moon SOS and all debby Harry songs , ( i told my careers advisor when she asked what do you want to be when you grow up ? Absolutely honestly wirh no sarcasm and absolutely serious, when i grow up i want to be Debbie harry. Ot was 1980. I was a ten yr old autistic undiagnosed kid. The irher option when she said yes but you cant be Debbie, so i said ok. Princess Diana. My parents especially my mum laughed about it till i was 30. Come on, i guarantee my dad wanted to be elvis or the guy who sang i fell onto a burning ring od fire. Also, i don't know rush but will check them now. And im pretty sure A- is way better than it got in smash hits in uk at the time. I always wondered why they all bleached their hair. The reggae thing in uk sounding like this in 1975 to 1985 was called Ska. It was a. Anti racism movement to stop uk studios and tv channels ignoring reggae and black folks music whatever the genre. Go Google The Beat, The Specials Fun boy 3 Madness and thousands of less successful but equally brilliant ska bands.

Your review is so articulate and sums up Mark & his work so accurately. I think his heart is still in the North-East, he grew up close to where I did, and his music reflects that. An honest, passionate down-to-earth man who has a unique way with words - his lyrics describe how I feel about my home town, he describes characters that I grew up with and describes emotions that I am not sufficiently articulate to put into words.
