    I was there and this city is so much underestimated, during 20'th century it was kind of shopping destination for people from at that time Yugoslavia and they would just come and buy stuff and did not really look around it, for example that square is beautifull and Miramare Castle is really something to see, last year when i said to my friends that i am going there to rest and just relax a bit they were like "what are you going to do there,go to Rome" but i was really surprised how good it looks and how there is a bit of everything there and its a very tasty mix of cultures(Habsburg, Mediteranean...) for sure a place to see. Also about Bora/Bura it can be fierce and more than 200 kph gusts, most famous places with Bura are Trieste, Rijeka,Senj,Pag, Makarska and actually sometimes Dubrovnik and Kotor but on west coast of Istria and around Zadar there is no Bura,which is weird because just 20 kilometers North it is fierce. Trieste in all South Slavic languages actually has no Vowels in its name because it is called Trst 😅 Ps, funny is how when i came to Trieste and later during same year in Milan i avoided all food that was not traditional in Italy, i was thinking why not just try local food and leave all imported stuff for some other time.

    While it is true, that Slovak is spoken only in Slovakia we should also consider mutual inteligibility with other local languages. As a Slovak native speaker I have absolutely no problem to understand and communicate with Czech - our communication will be almost 100% fluent (but if I try to speak Czech, I could not do it in totally correct way - I would not be able to deceive them and in few minutes I would be recognized as a Slovakian). Polish is more tricky, communication would require effort and concentration. Spoken Polish would be perhaps difficult, but I can read polish newspapers with some guessing of the meaning of some words. Ukrainian would be even more tricky and in addition they use cyrillic script. And at the last Hungarian and German - despite some common words Slovak speaker would not be able to comunicate with them without dedicated effort to study them as a foreign language.

    6:02 - Each time when I return from Poland after longer stay there, I accidentally say TAK for yes instead of our word, when I return from Croatia, I greet dobar dan for a few days, that's completely normal, sometimes I say chvala instead of our normal thank you. 😀 About your accent, I don't know if it's typical for Italians, but your N and D is more softened than standard D and in Czech or Slovak, which is something you have in common with Russians, Czechs or Slovaks don't do it, that's why some people may think that you have a Russian accent. Even when Russian has a really good English, you can still catch him on pronouncing too soft N and D in words where it is not supposed to be softened. Or long vowels, Russian speakers can't distinguiush words like ship and sheep, they pronounce both the same, Slovaks and Czechs have advantage in this.

    • @palmacate
      @palmacate 13 дней назад

      I understand 😆 Regarding the accent, it’s not connected to Italian accent or pronunciation. I think I have softened N and D due to having studied Russian for longer time + listening to many people from the East of Slovakia while learning Slovak (they do have softer N and D, right?)

    1/26/2025 RUSSIAN IMPERIALISM IS THE REASON RUSSIA INVADED UKRAINE, GEORGIA, AND MOLDOVA. BEWARE OF THE AXIS "PLAYBOOK" OF "STATE CAPTURE" IN SLOVAKIA, HUNGARY, AND ROMANIA. After the brave people of Ukraine won the Maidan Revolution in February 2014, we saw Putin’s designated dictator Victor Yanukovych fleeing to Russia with his tail between his legs. It was obvious that the "Play Book" for "State Capture" had failed in Ukraine. Putin was frightened that a color revolution could happen in Russia. He knew that Ukraine and NATO were not a security threat to Russia, but his propaganda machine continues to hype this absurd “RUSSIA AS VICTIM” narrative in order to justify invasion and war. While Russian propaganda claims that its security concerns and its desire to protect Russians in foreign lands are the real reasons for its wars, Russia was not being threatened with attack and its citizens were usually in a better situation in these foreign lands than they were in Russia. The real motivation for the use of the “Play book” of “State Capture”, and invasion is that Russia pursues imperialist expansion for the following economic, military, and political benefits: To be a great world power, Russia needs to significantly increase its population as its own population is in decline. The “State Capture” of Georgia would add 3.8 million people, the “State Capture “of Moldova would add 3 million people, and the military defeat of Ukraine would add 38 million people for a total of 44.8 million people added to the Russian empire which would increase Russia’s population by a third from 145 million to 189.8 million. Next Russian needs the land, resources, industries and the militarily strategic geography these lands provide. For example, Russia needs to rule Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe bordering NATO with the most fertile land in Europe. We must remember that Russia and its AXIS allies(China, Iran, and North Korea) are “weaponizing“ food and fuel in their struggle to create a world, ruled by autocrats, without the rule of law, in which “might makes right” to replace the multilateral world of democracies where international laws are respected and border disputes can be settled by peaceful negotiation or by the International Court of Justice without war. With the expansion of Russian territory, Russia and its AXIS allies will be in a better position to use the “Play Book” of “State Capture” with countries within NATO such as Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Bulgaria. For example, to prevent a stolen election, and to ensure the correctness and legality of the electoral process, The Romanian Supreme Court (12/2024) annulled the first round of the election of a far right, pro- Russian, ultra-nationalist candidate after blatant Russian backed election interference, "aggressive hybrid Russian attacks", and election manipulation by TikTok which used algorithms, paid promoters, and coordinated accounts that came alive only weeks before the election. The Romanian intelligence service concluded that the 85,000 cyber-attacks on election websites, and IT systems could only be done with the considerable resources of an "attacking state". We must remember that the "Play Book " of "State Capture" is much cheaper and more cost effective than invasion and war. What would NATO and the EU do if countries in NATO fell victim to the AXIS strategy of “State Capture” and an AXIS(Russia, China, Iran, North Korea) allied dictator destroyed democracy from within, without war, allied the country politically and militarily with the AXIS, all without activating NATO’s Article 5? Timothy Snyder describes Russian imperialism as follows: “Putin’s wars on Ukraine in 2014 and 2022 were Neo-neocolonialism. Russia's leaders applied every argument from the history of imperialism, including Nazi and Soviet neocolonialism, to Ukraine and Ukrainians. The state did not exist; the nation did not exist; international law did not apply; borders were not real; Ukrainians were colonial people yearning for domination whose alien elites were to be destroyed and whose food and other resources were to be plundered. The scale of Russian atrocities after 2022 was comparable to that of the worst colonial wars of the past.” (On Freedom, page 128). Russian propaganda repeated by many in the west, blames the NATO expansion into eastern Europe as the reason Russia invaded its neighbors in violation of their sovereign internationally recognized borders. This absurd “Russia as Victim” narrative ignores the fact that Ukraine is not a threat to Russia, and NATO is a defensive alliance respecting international law. Question? Do independent countries and free people have the right to voluntarily choose democracy and freedom under the protection of a security umbrella after experiencing decades of oppression and a history of invasion by a foreign totalitarian regime? Should NATO have denied Eastern European countries entry into NATO with the hope and a prayer that a dictator bent on restoring the Russian empire would leave them to peacefully develop their democracies and their economies without any attempt at “State Capture” or invasion? How can Russian sympathizers be so naïve? Do they seriously believe that capitulation to dictators will bring peace? As the Roman strategist Vegetius said: IF YOU WANT PEACE - PREPARE FOR WAR! NATO is a defensive alliance of democracies that respects the territorial integrity of their neighbors and operates under international law. Russia is a totalitarian society ruled by a dictator and his corrupt oligarchs who share in the plunder of their own country and they hope to take their imperialist ambitions to other countries they can control by using the "Play Book" for "State Capture" which is much cheaper and more cost effective than invasion and war. With the Russia-Ukraine war, Russia repeated the strategy of military invasion used in the Transnistria War from March 2 to July 1992 to create a Russian satellite state Transnistria separate from Moldova. In August 2008, the Russo-Georgian War or the Russian Invasion of Georgia resulted in the establishment of two Russian backed separatist regions- South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In this way, Russia succeeded in keeping Moldova and Georgia out of the European Union and NATO while leaving open the future option of capturing the rest of these countries by using the” Play Book” for “State Capture”, or by a future military invasion. Russian troops remain to this day in these captured territories, and mass protests in Georgia have failed to stop the gradual dismantling of Georgian democracy and freedom. In10/ 2024, the Russian backed Georgia Dream party conducted a stolen election and ended its application for EU membership. Moldova election in 2024 was the victim of massive election interference by Russia and its proxies, but the brave and brilliant Maia Sandu won the presidency so that the country could continue its march toward the EU and democracy. The Eastern European countries understand what life is like when a country is attacked and subjugated under a foreign autocrat. They were invaded and occupied by Russian dictators so they also understand the Russian imperialist mindset. When Russia invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014, the B-9 was formed including the countries of Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia. During the June 11th 2024 B-9 conference NATO Secretary Jens Stoltenberg recognized the B-9 countries for strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defense: “You host our eight multi-national battlegroups; you have increased the readiness of your forces; you lead by example on defense spending; and you are at the forefront on Allied support for Ukraine”. The B-9 nations have thrived in the EU under the protective umbrella of NATO and they are a bulwark in defense of liberty. However, the B-9 countries are at risk of "State Capture" by autocrats allied with Russia and its AXIS allies- especially Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Bulgaria. Russia could have chosen a different path since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Imagine Russia as a democracy with the rule of law, a free press, freedom of speech, an independent judiciary, a country with a market economy based on free enterprise without Oligarchs and a corrupt ruling party. Imagine Russia - the largest nation on the planet- coexisting peacefully with its neighbors while respecting their sovereign territory, freedom and independence. Remember the hope for Russia’s future as a democracy with freedom and real prosperity for the Russian people as envisioned by the murdered Alexei Navalny and so many other true Russian heroes. Imagine the wealth ordinary Russians would possess in a free market economy, without corruption, peacefully trading with its neighbors. A democratic and free Russia could have led humanity to a better world! Unfortunately, Putin used the PLAY BOOK of STATE CAPTURE to dismantle the democratic institutions and laws put in place during the fall of the Soviet Union in order to install a repressive totalitarian regime. No longer do we see term limits for the President, an independent judiciary, a free press (versus pervasive state propaganda), freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, independent political parties that have the right to put forward candidates chosen in free and fair elections, and a legal system that respects the rights of the accused before imprisonment, torture or murder by the state. The best chance for the Russian people to achieve a democratic country with freedom, prosperity, and peace would be the Victory for Ukraine against Russian imperialism, and an end to the corrupt totalitarian Putin regime. David A. Mangs Ph.D.

      Nobody can expect you to learn a language within few weeks or let's say half a year. However, it is nice to be able to say some basic words like hello, good bye, thank's, my name is etc.. That is feasible and it is also helpful. European languages have also quite some similarities so it is not that difficult. Even Hungarian which is rather special has due to its neighbourhood some familiar words utca like czech ulice for example. Regarding alphabet it is also easy: Most Latin, Greek you know from maths and physics and kyrillic is not that far from Greek. No excuses to not at least try. OK, some like Finnish or Basque are really challenging.

Basically everyone younger than 25 is guaranteed to understand English at least at the level where you can get your things done, and most older people do understand quite a bit too. I am 44, I grew back during communism / wild 90's in our country, when English was anything but common here but today's kids speak now pretty good I would say. But I agree, it makes sense to learn at least a few basic phrases / greetings /etc, just like in every other country. The locals will be much more helpful when they hear that foreigners try to speak Slovak, and nobody should be afraid about making mistakes etc. that doesn't matter at all, just like everywhere else, at least when dealing in basic day to day situations. Cheers!

    I am from the East Slovakia and I never use Ľ sound, instead I use only L sound. In fact, I even don't know usual words with Ľ, we do not use them in real life. What comes to my mind is the word "ľalia", which is special kind of flower used in one poem learnt in school. 🙂

    Išlo Ti to, Katka. Skús toto: "Naolejovaná lampa, nenaolejovaný knôt." Výzva pre Slovákov je opakovať túto vetu čo najrýchlejšie za sebou a počítať, koľkokát sa Ti to podarí, než sa prvý raz pomýliš.

    Oh girl, your soft “ď, ť, ň, ľ“ were adorable. Most of my family (in Trnava) couldn’t do that 😊😂 As i was growing up my fav tongue breakers were “Strč prst skrz krk” and “Guľôčka v jamôčke” of course it has no real meaning

    You can try this one: Tristotridsaťtri strieborných striekačiek striekalo na tristotridsaťtri strieborných striech. In english it would be: 333 silver fire pumps were spraying on 333 silver roofs 😂

    I think it all depends on your native language. For people whose native language is not Slavic, this language will most likely be difficult. For me, it was incredibly easy. The only difference is that my native language is Russian, and I also speak Ukrainian and English. So even without studying this language, I could understand about 50-60% of what Slovaks say. When I started studying, it took me 2 months to confidently understand Slovak speech without losing the main idea. 4 months to start listening to podcasts and slowly reading texts in Slovak. 6 months to freely watch films without even thinking about the fact that it is a foreign language, and read at a slow pace. It took me more than 20 years to reach this level of English.

      I fully agree, and wow, great (and fast) progress! For me the easiest would be Spanish and French instead :)

      @@palmacate It seems to me that the closest more accurate example can be Spanish and Portuguese. The difference between these languages, in my opinion, most accurately determines the difference between Russian and Slovak. And if you consider that I speak Ukrainian fluently, at the level of a native speaker, even the example of the closeness of Spanish and Portuguese is not correct. My progress in learning Slovak is natural, and does not at all reflect any special abilities in learning foreign languages. Therefore, your example is more indicative. Despite the fact that your native language belongs to the Romano-Germanic language family, you still do not give up, and continue to improve your Slovak and Russian.
