I got my degree in Elementary Education because I love working with kids and helping them grow in their learning, but before I ever got an official teaching position, I became a mom and realized being a full-time mom was my true calling. I've homeschooled for 12+ years, I have four kids, and I love sharing advice, tips, and resources with people.
My passion for my family and for yours is to facilitate learning for our kids through 1. Books 2. Experiences and 3. Conversations. Over my years of homeschooling my kids, I've found that these three basic ways of learning are truly the best for meaningful, child-focused education.

Homeschooling High School for the first time
Просмотров 4804 месяца назад
I will be homeschooling high school for the first time this upcoming school year! It's so hard to know what resources to use, how to document and fill out transcripts, and also think about what our kids need to get accepted into college. I think I've found the resource that will help me do all of that. The Well-Trained Mind by Susan Wise Bauer amzn.to/3Y4SI2v Their online recommendations: wellt...

Homeschool your kids to be self-motivated, life-long learners
Просмотров 316Год назад
Reason 5 out of 5 to embrace homeschooling your kids confidently: you get to let your kids guide their own learning. We want them to be self-motivated, life-long learners. We as homeschooling parents facilitate and support, but also help our kids see that they have total capability to explore and inquire about whatever interests them to find answers they need.

Pulling Your Kids Out of School Over Winter Break? WATCH THIS
So incredibly helpful, thank you so so much, truly!
Hello, Beth! At 5:45 you mentioned that one of your kids was provided with an iPad to watch videos regarding his subject of interest. What is your opinion about giving young children access to the internet and technology? Do you maintain control on how many hours they can spend a day online and, if not, why?
Peter is such a treasure.
Wasn't the entire point of public education to create factory workers to keep coorperate machines going? No wonder so many children don't fit into it, not everyone was born to do factory type work
I’ve been following you for a little bit and watching some of your unschooling videos from a couple years ago. Are you still unschooling, or did you change it up?
Unschooling here after going through a nightmare with schools. Best thing I've ever done 😊
We started homeschooling a couple of years ago officially. My son would have gone to kindergarten. This second grade year is not going well for us. He finds my workbooks so boring and hates it, except science experiments and having me read to him. I am not sure exactly how to change up our curriculum to fit him or go down the curriculum rabbit hole. I am more of an eclectic homeschool mom who likes the Charlotte Mason approach, Montessori, and more hands on approach. I feel like this year I have been ready to give up. I have been looking into other methods because my go to workbooks are not helping either my son or I. I am curious about unschooling, but I am kind of the worry wart mom who wants to check off all the boxes. Haha I grew up going to public school so that it is hard for me to get out of that mindset. Thank you for the lovely video and explaining this well. We unschooled completely until he was 5 and then I felt this pressure to do more mom led writing and reading. Thanks again.
I was just reminiscing with my two graduates from homeschool on what I used when they were young. It’s a beautiful program!
Hey, I thought you unschooled?
I didnt hear about the picks and the download isn’t opening up. 😔
Good story
Is it common core? So u think it is good for a ASD child with special needs? Can learn but on a slower based.
Even though I don’t homeschool. I have read a lot of reviews for CTC. No it is not common core. The creator of the program is Australian.
My 9th grader is using IEW Level B this year. My 11th grader is using Sonlight 430, which combines composition along with American Lit.
I have a 9th grader and a 11th grader this year :) I LOVE homeschooling my high schoolers!
Thank you for teaching me about this today I am 13 and I hate school and this is nice and I will tell my parents tomorrow morning because I love this
Beautifully said ❤YES
This is sooooo fricken true!!!!!!! I had so much anxiety and stress when i didnt understand something.
I love to read but I read books that don’t have pictures so I can’t read my books for them for bedtime could I? And my oldest kid is 3 and is fully conversational. I’m still reading teeny tot books but when do I age up on the books or longer books?
Welcome back. Omg we missed you ❤❤
Half of my family have dyslexia I really hate idea of grading my future kids, when I know might have learning difficulties like my self. I think kids should be learn at own past. For middle school probably online program will be very nice.
Hi! Where did you get your world map?
Im a sophomore this year. I have a dance class, and I do bowling. I’m signed up for a co ops but I don’t think it’s gonna be as often as I’d hoped. Seems like I still don’t have any close friends or ever go out. Do you have any tips on how to make friends and get out more?
Thank you so much for this review! I've graduated 3 students & I'm now schooling my youngest who has Down syndrome. I used MUS with her siblings & now I'm second guessing MUS alone for her. She does well with MUS, but gets bored with it. Your review solidified why I need to stick with MUS for her! I may get the free download of TGATB & print sections as a review for her & to sprinkle in interest. Thanks so much!!
My son is doing a lot better homeschooling at his own pace, compared to public school getting distracted by the other children couldn't focus on his work sitting at a desk all day, public school is not for everyone
Unfortunately for my son, his mom has ADD inattentive and managed to get through a graduate degree without ever reading a chapter in her life. I DESPISE reading. My son used to love it until the school forced him to read 500 pages each month, on top of the in-school reading for book reports
Google search of Sudbury Schools brought me to a wikipedia article and the reference list to the article has many great sources to read if more info is wanted. Like books by Gatto.
Hey just giving my opinion here take it or leave it. I was forced to do homeschooling, and i am autistic. this was not good because my parents did the equivalent of throwing me at a computer and said ‘learn, boy!’
Thank you for this video. I needed this.
10th grade - transitioning back to homeschool
That's what I did. My daughter was 7. I just read to her. And not that often bc I don't like to read at all. I'm am audiobook person. My daughter eventually started to read along with me. She was reading perfectly within a couple of weeks. Didn't take long or much effort at all. We unschool. And believe me they will learn regardless. Children really are like sponges and will soak up any information they find interest in.
Hai i'm Ririn from Indonesia who has plan to homeschool my kids for primary secondary stage. And so lucky to meet your Chanel n inspire me a lot. Thank mam.
In our experience, we have had some of our kids use Math U See (MUS) in a private school setting, and these children finished Algebra 1 in 8th grade, going into Honors Geometry at the public high school (in WA) in 9th grade. They both did fine. One was an A student in math and the other one was a B student. They both completed Algebra 2 in 10th grade, as well as a statistics course at the community college in Running Start (our form of dual enrollment) in 11th/12th grade. One daughter also finished pre-calculus in Running Start at the college in 12th grade with a perfect grade. She didn't need any further math for her nursing degree, so she stopped there. There was another student at the same private grade school who completed geometry in MUS in 8th grade and went straight into public school Honors Algebra 2 in 9th grade. She ended up graduating valedictorian at the high school and earned a bachelor's from the University of Washington with a minor in math. I have not used MUS beyond Algebra 1, but in our experience the arithmetic levels of this curriculum lay an excellent foundation for higher level math.
I’m so glad those kids had a great experience!
Is Math U See common core? And what is CTC online. I am a first time homeschooler of my ASD child, and plan to bring my older child home next.
Yay! I finally found a mama that has children around the same age using a much more minimalist approach. I’ve gone back and forth with using TGAB for my 1st and 4th grader but don’t want all separate curriculum. I also have a 12th grader. With these age gaps, I was getting super overwhelmed as I’ve been an unschooler for years. Do you happen to know the difference between handwriting without tears and Zaners handwriting books? I can’t find anything that shows a flip through sample of Zaner.
I’ve never used handwriting without tears so I don’t know the difference between the two.
How long do they spend in workbooks?
We have zero workbooks this year.
How long do you dedicate to work book? I thought you were doing child led education
Unless the parent has no desire to actually teach and just wants it easy... i.e my step kids mom
I don’t see how it would be easier on parents to keep their kids out of school just to neglect them at home. That is not unschooling.
One of the traps I felt into when I started homeschooling was to basically inforce classic books and my kids got so bored. I read the homeschool family from Sarah Mackenzie and that transformed me too. I started letting my kids choose their books and I just try to introduce classic books in our read aloud time. It has change me so much. I was not raised as a reader so it feels like I am learning alongside my kids. They now love when I read to them. It has changed me in my homeschool/life approach. Now I am reading Jim Trelease’s book and I kept getting excited. Loved your video and just subscribed 🎉
The classics are great but I also LOVE new books by amazing authors. Thanks for subscribing!
My husband is trying to get me to quit. It is hard, He doesn't support me.
I’m sorry to hear that. It’s a very important decision that both parents need to be in agreement on.
@@BethPavlik We agreed to do it, but now that we are he suggests quitting if I talk about challenging days with him.
Thank you for this summary. We've homeschooled almost from the beginning, and we did a lot of child-led learning in the early years. As he has gotten into middle school, we follow a curriculum because I'm tired. We still use unschooling methods for certain topics, rabbit holes, etc. but for the most part the pre-made educational materials leave me with more energy for elder care, farm care & small business. Unschooling was A LOT of work. It was awesome, and he had an excellent early education, but it was just a lot. Coming at this from a public school teaching background, and a fan of John Holt's educational philosophies, forest schooling, and interest-based learning.
Who can afford this?
