I agree. We have tried completely unschooling before which I tried to do “perfectly” with many rules and it was a flop. My kids enjoy having knowledge brought before them and sharing in that together consistently and I was trying never to put anything on them with no structure as I understood it. Everyone was dysregualted and it wasn’t working so we returned to what we were doing before. But over the years we have become more and more relaxed and more focused on what Charlotte Mason said as well that it is not how much the child know but rather how much does he care? And we teach highly to that principal. I feel Charlotte Mason, a revolutionary of her time and John Holt a revolutionary for his would have had much engaging and merry conversation about education and what children need. I then, like you I realized I’m basically unschooling in many ways the way John Holt was trying to describe. We use what we love and we meet every need we can. And we don’t to what is unnecessary.
Recently a lot of learning disorders have been diagnosed in some of my children. That confirms why we got to this place in a lot of way. I also readjusted to meet that knowledge by immediately starting a Year of Plying Skillfully and adding a very visual math. We are also considering Diane Crafts program and Dyslexia games. But the bulk of the way I have taught my children things successfully ia when they are fully engaged in it. It’s funny how to some people we do way too much and to others we are way way too relaxed. But we just find our way and trying to make sure everyone feels peaceful and interested while making progress.

Thank you for this video. I’m a classroom teacher but exploring how to bring a sense of “unschooling” to school.
