Regional Data Show Dangerous Sea Surface Temperature Increases
#climatechange
#hurricanes
#hurricanehelene Recently available regional sea surface temperature data from the University of Maine Climate Reanalyzer indicate that the 2024 North Atlantic hurricane season is likely to produce some very intense and very wet tropical storms. The recent hurricane Helene with its rapid intensification to a category 4 storm that produce record storm surges along the Florida gulf coast, very high winds, and very heavy rainfall inland from landfall is an example of such a dangerous storm.

    Devil's Advocate: Can you really measure acceleration over such a short period? In your first graph, overlying the linear trend I saw what looked like a 50-year cycle. Isn't there a 50-year cycle of transfer of heat from the tropics to the poles? In any case, unless there is continuous positive feedback from ice loss or increasing wildfires the acceleration will be only a step change.

      Thanks for your comment. From the analysis of the empirical data that I presented, it's quite clear that global warming has been increasing - owing to a number of factors, which I enumerated. It remains an open question whether or not the acceleration will continue, or whether it will level off as you propose. Time will tell.

      Thanks for your comments and question. I have seen various estimates as to how much SO2 would be required to reduce global temps by about 0.5 deg C. Most run around 5% of the SO2 normally in the atmosphere. So, I would estimate that the amount needed for a valid test would be about 1% or so of the SO2 normally in the atmosphere. That's non-negligible.

      ExxonMobil is attempting to prevent shareholders from calling management to account at its annual shareholders' meetings. They are doing this by filing a lawsuit that, if successful, would make essentially impossible for individual shareholders or groups of shareholders to place issuses on the annual meeting agendas of any publicly held company in the United States. CalPERS holds investments in many publicly-held companies, and they occasionally use their ownership of these shares to hold the company management accountable on issues such as climate change.

      I've wondered why people don't make the connection between the idea that we are reaching Peak Oil within the next 50 or so years and the obvious trend in Global Warming since the mid Eighteen Hundreds when the Industrial Revolution essentially started... What I mean by that is that it took the planet several hundreds of millions of years to produce the petroleum and we will, essentially, have used it all up within 250 to 300 years.... This aligns perfectly with the Industrial Revolution as well as population growth and the constant rise in fossil fuel usage being the PRIMARY contributors to The Greenhouse Effect... For all intent and purpose, we will have taken everything from the ground and pumped it into the air.... If that isn't the most obvious indicator that the warming is MAN MADE, I don't know what is.... This is so ridiculously obvious.... What it shows me is how powerful the Oil Lobbyists are and how gullible the Climate Change Deniers are.... They love their SUV's SO MUCH, that they're willing to accept the weak argument suggesting that this drastic level of Warming is just "NORMAL".... Looks like we will just have to let it all crash and burn in order to learn the lesson. All that done and said, I'm NOT saying that the "Green" plans we have are going to help in the least.... Both Solar and Wind have huge problems... (Mainly the inability to recycle as well as inefficient power storage systems.) And then there's the giant elephant in the room when looking at Electric Vehicles. (Inefficient Batteries, huge pollution caused by Battery disposal and COAL as being the primary source to charge the Batteries....) Finally, you have the suppression of technologies that could have been Game Changers like the 20% efficiency Solar Panel that was made around the mid Eighties. Had we really invested more heavily in them, we could potentially be near 60% plus efficiency by now.... But sadly, after nearly 40 years, we're still averaging about 20% on Panels..... You also have Stan Meyer and his Dune buggy that ran on water... (Running on Hydrogen created by Electrolysis....) (Of course, all a "Conspiracy Theory"...) There are plenty of other Game Changing technologies that have been shelved all in the name of "More Profit".... It's sad to say, but I've lost a lot of hope in humanity as I get older... Where's that good ole Asteroid when you need it? Perhaps it's time for a Reset....

Averages of temperature measurments over large regions or over the entire globe give us information about climate as opposed to weather.

    Whilst it is logical that the small area of heat islands is not relevant to the specific heat input, if it is correct as I am given to understand, the temperatures cited by the media as an indicator of warming are taken within a heat island then this is misleading!!

    • @DrMarkHShapiro
      @DrMarkHShapiro 7 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your comment. The point of the video is that the reports cited by the media generally are NOT heat island data, but data from the various climate monitoring agencies reporting global average surface temperatures computed from the average temperatures in a large number of sectors that span the globe. Since the urban areas where the heat islands are found cover only about 1% of the surface area, the contribution from heat islands to the overall global average surface temperature numbers is less than 0.2 deg C even if no correction is made for the heat island effect.

    The climate science denialists aren't claiming that UHI is responsible for observed GW, but that the UHI effect distorts the temperature record which they picture as thermometers in dense urban areas, or on asphalt runways in the path of jet exhaust. Of course this isn't true, but perhaps you could explain how the station measurements are actually used to construct a global temp average, and why the UHI has negligible effect on the reported global temperature anomalies.

    • @DrMarkHShapiro
      @DrMarkHShapiro 8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your comment. I personally have met some deniers who claim that the UHI is responsible for a large part of the global average temperature increase, and others who claim that the UHI distorts the temperature record because there are more weather stations in the urban areas. In the video I tried to emphasize that each grid element used to compute the global average temperature contributes only one value to the average temp for that grid element.

    It's gotta be a corollary of The Peter Principle: Those that can't teach or do scholarship rise to become administrators. In addition to the remedies suggested, perhaps all academically qualified administrators should be required to teach one class per year. Deans and VPs should have term limits, maybe ten years, after which they must return to their departments as regular faculty for at least five years. A whole special class of administrators has arisen with little to no experience as faculty. They've earned the Ed.D. in "Higher Education Administration" and have no practical knowledge of the functions or functioning of a university. Let a clerk compile the ostensibly onerous new reporting requirements.

      You are right on the mark. When I was a graduate student in physics at Penn back in the dark ages, the university president was Gaylord P. Harnwell, who had a distinguished career as a physicist before he became an administrator. Even though Penn was a major Ivy League university, Harnwell insisted on teaching one course in the physics department every year - a great way to keep in touch with the concerns of students and the pulse of the university.

      Which direction? More or less bloat?

  • @gaylek.brunelle5909
    @gaylek.brunelle5909 8 месяцев назад

    I have long felt administrative bloat was a serious problem, not only because all those administrators are more costly than faculty, even full-time faculty, but also because all to often they impede rather than aid faculty in doing their jobs. Their insistence on ever more meetings, reports, and initiatives distracts faculty from teaching and research, consuming time and energy for projects for which there is very little evidence in most cases that they actually improve education. Who assesses whether assessment actually results in enhanced learning, for example? It's treated as a given that it does, and then everyone must comply. This is but one example of how these initiatives end up justifying hiring more administrators to implement them, who then create new initiatives to justify their jobs, in a spiral that results in rising costs and a demoralized faculty. Administrators are necessary, but there should, must in an era of declining enrollments, be oversight of the administrators themselves, assessment of their utility, and a willingness to downsize administration when the evidence indicates that a program or initiative is unhelpful or overstaffed. Universities have been plagued my "mission creep" just as K-12 education has been, and this too results in bloated administrations. What will be needed in the future is a difficult conversation about the actual purpose of higher education, what the real mission of various types of institutions of higher education is.

    Thank you for this overview. I've been preaching this for years and even asked CFA leaders why they aren't pushing for the decrease of administrative bloat. As you point out, it is in faculty interest to decrease the bloat so faculty can better advise and educate our students.

      Thanks for your comment. I agree. Often the advice given by student services advisors is actually detrimental to students - especially for those interested in sequential majors including the sciences and engineering. For example, in my department (physics) most of our courses have prerequisites so it's important for our majors to take their introductory physics courses and their required math courses early. However, the advisers in student services often tell new students to get their general education courses out of the way first. This can delay graduation for our physics majors (and students in other sequential majors) by up to two years.

    Any idea why the sea temperature has increased so much since April 2023?

    • @DrMarkHShapiro
      @DrMarkHShapiro 8 месяцев назад

      It's likely a combination of factors including reduction of particulate emissions from ships owing to new regulations going into effect, relatively low particulate emissions from volcanoes in the past year, the return of El Nino and rising concentrations of greenhouse gases such as CO2 and methane in the atmosphere. The reduction in particulate emissions allows more solar radiation to impact the ocean surfaces. El Nino weather conditions tend to increase sea surface temperatures in the tropics, and the increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere cause more heat to be trapped in the lower atmosphere and more infrared radiation to impact the sea surface.

    Would a lessening of air travel appreciably help slow global warming? (And thanks for these illuminating videos.)

    • @DrMarkHShapiro
      @DrMarkHShapiro 8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the question Ben. The latest estimates show that air travel is contributing about 3.5% to climate change. So while reducing air travel would help, it would result in only a minor reduction in warming.
