Love your videos & enthusiasm! I’m a dodgy fly fisher Of sorts and live nearMarysville vic as of this year would love to go fishing with you Rob👍🏼
no weiber :( and there is another fly fishing shop in melbourne *points at Aussie Angler* *cheer*

@@robertlouis24 fair enough big fellah take care :)
Hurleys shop is just as good, and Gav and staff are THE BEST
That was interesting. I have fished downstream twice and never felt confident about upstream because of those signs, even though it is clearly a TSR on the left bank. Next time I will definitely try upstream. It is a lovely stream and would be wonderful to fish it in a better season with more fish in the river. I blanked both times. Good to see there is at least 1 or 2 there and you got one of them :D
That’s my local shop Robert
You went into the FlyFisher with Squish's cap . . . and came out of there wearing it too. Ha ha ha! Andrew must be doing too well.
@@BillSaltbush Always keen to support my flyfishing mentor, Darren Asquith - after all, my favourite rods carry his surname 😬
Looks sensational, perhaps in another life.
@@adzoutnabout888 That shop is not for the faint hearted - it has all the cool kid gear - what I would say is that my flyfishing addiction is cheaper than my previous cycling addiction…
Hi there LG, I fished the downstream section of the river late December last year on light spin gear. I managed to catch two trout and numerous redfin so it was a good session. Just beware of snakes as I saw numerous specimens sunning themselves along the bank.
@@markc3478 Thanks Mark - I am very keen to fish downstream - beautiful water…
I wonder how many landowners are aware of the access right of way along the bank. Most I know assume they own right to the water's edge.
hmmmmm rosenbud *cheer* 6.05 for the money shot guys :) thats so interesting about the river levels and banks etc.............there was a time where the land owners used too let us in if we came and had a chat but a certain segmant of the fly fishing community farked it about ten years ago anyhows great video mate :)

Another great video Robert!! I have the Asquith 5 weight, you have me now interested to have a look at the 4 weight!
@@aaronbowie7368 Aaron - all that I can say is that we are both extremely lucky to be able to own and fish Loomis Asquiths - as they are superb rods - certainly the most accurate rods that I have ever fished with - what trout line do you typically pair your 5wt with? I bought the 5wt second-hand over 2 years ago for A$950 - which was the bargain of the century - rod had only been used a couple of times by the previous owner, and the cork was flawless. A perfect combination would probably be the 4wt and the 6wt as the 4wt has surprising backbone - I am comfortably able to throw a dry dropper with the 4wt. That said, I have always loved a 5wt - my favourite rod of all time is my first decent trout rod - a Sage Graphite III 586 RPL - 8’ 6” 5 weight - a perfect rod IMHO.
@@robertlouis24 yes, you did well there, that's an excellent price. As you have described, they are beautiful rods, I love mine. I am currently using it with a Rio Gold Elite that I have on a Lamson Speedster in the limited "Steve Perriwinkle" colour, its purple with orange hub, its cool. I have another Speedster with a SA Smooth Infinity taper which goes really well on it also. I can't believe your first decent rod was a Sage RPL Graphite III. My first decent rod was also a Sage RPL Graphite III but a 690. Mine I got from the Compleat Angler back in 1991, they use sell Sage rods that they would make up here in Australia, they still had the lifetime warranty but you got them a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than the factory rod. I am really keen to have a cast of the new Helios 5 weight. Thanks Robert. Aaron
Thanks for the info on tackle, set up and the places you fish. All makes it worth watching. My Nautilus also wobbled a bit, and occasionally the leader would slip out of the spool. I found a Nautilus RUclips channel which showed how to insert some felt between the spool and frame to cure both problems. As a fellow ex-Saffer, thought I’d ask if you’ve researched the Origin II fly reel - designed in SA, built in South Korea, sells at $300-$400. Fantastic reel, great drag well tested on some big NZ trout a few months ago.
@@RuHa-s4q I have taken a look at the Origin II reels online - wow - stunning looking reels - definitely a reel that I would like to get in my hands some day…

Awesome stuff LG! Im doing my chargeable hours so good to have a quick break! Great vid. Loved the shop and rod review...and of course your fishing my local! It is a lovely stretch of water Unfortunately there have been a few years of conflict between land managers and fisherman at that spot of the Fish R. A lot of pumping gear and fencing was sabotaged/stolen at one point, some tension and confrontations. Always good to know and respect the laws and introduce yourself to the land holders if you see them. Great people, but given the ease of access at the bridge has become difficult for them to know who to trust and who not too. Unfortunately they have to assume everyone is of the unsavoury variety. Betta get back to it...if I work hard I might get a few hours to follow your footsteps later this week!!! Just in your honour I might even un-moth ball by 30 odd year old Loomis GL3 9ft 4wt....the great great great grand daddy of your asquith! Still a decent enough rod!! (Will probably stick with the modern 963 and EN rods though!!)

If it's any consolation Victoria's trout season this year has been a bust. No one knows where the trout are.
It's been a dry winter up around Lithgow way. Some of the creeks in September looked like end of summer, not end of winter. Others are running well though. The low creeks will need restocking as last year wiped out quite a few trout. Good on you though for getting out and having a go.
omg thank god its a weiber again, and we get it twice :) . Been a more than a couple of years since the weiber got whipped out twice in a day i bet :) Great video Rob ..............Thank you so much for taking the time and effort too post an amazing episode again :) Youre productions are getting so much better mate as in getting towards Tvish standards so thanks so much :)
Pity you're not blessed with Tassie's rivers - that for me is a big difference between NSW and Tassie in terms of trout fisheries.
Not sure about these days Robert, but we used to catch some cracking trout in Diamond Swamp Ck in good years. Havent been back that way for at least 5 though so...ask for permission to access.
Good stuff LG! Now your really really close to my home...and I am getting nostalgic. That view from the Tarana pub...you are basically looking at where my father grew up (now 92yo...Funnily was having a cuppa with him before I logged on). Look forward to the second instalment...have fished that section a lot over the years (as well as the section in this episode). As we are all aware, not fishing as well this year, but there are a few about!!

Hi Lord 🙂 I'm enjoying watching your videos. They are kind of like the Aldi of fly fishing videos. Just a few questions. The rivers look a bit low, have you found that to be the case generally in the alps this season? Also how does your Thomas and Thomas Contact 2 10' 9" 3wt compare to your other euro rods, in terms of general euro nymphing and dry dropper fishing. I'm looking at upgrading from a 10' rod to a 10' 9". I have found the 10' Orvis very versatile if you carry a reel with a 5wt line in your pack. It functions adequately as a dry fly rod if you you want to carry just one rod. Cheers.
@@PhilKing-u3s The Contact II 10’ 9” 3wt is a pretty complete rod IMHO - that said, it is expensive - so, not for everyone - I have been flyfishing since I was 6, and fished for the first half of my life with very ordinary gear (Daiwa Osprey rods in 9’ and 7’ 6”) and can pickup the cadence of rods pretty quickly - there is no doubt that line tangles that you get from a longer rod are bad, especially when the line wraps around the tip of the rod - you have to be very deliberate when you place the fly in the hookkeeper and release the fly from the hookkeeper - there is also no doubt that the extra length helps when contact nymphing - I have tried to thrown a 3wt line (SA MPX WF-3-F) on the T&T and it does not cast well - that said, the rod casts a dry dropper rig superbly well. My Winston Super 10 10’ 3wt was a better all-round rod for contact nymphing, dry dropper on a contact nymphing rig, and casting a regular trout line (SA MPX WF-3-F). I prefer both of the above rods to the Hanak Superb RS Graphene 10’ 3” 3wt that I fished a lot earlier on this year. And, in terms of a more reasonably priced option - you cannot go wrong with the Primal Zen 10’ 3wt that I bought Barbs for her 50th. I would suspect that you will be very happy with an Orvis 10’ in 3wt to 4wt. Keep me posted.
@@robertlouis24 Hi Robert, Two more questions. Where did you access your Contact 11 10'9" 3wt in Australia or did you buy direct from the US? How does the recovery of the tip compare to the Winston 10' 10"ie. "noodle factor". Cheers
@ I bought the Contact II directly from Piet Gouws at Nervous Water - service from Piet was superb - he organised for my name to be put on the rod and a spare tip - and the rod was in my hands within a month - I have Piet’s contact details if you need them - in terms of tip recovery, I don’t fish any rods that do not have a tip that recovers quickly - all my current rods are top end - I just take it for granted that the tips will settle quickly - there are two areas where I feel that the Contact II differentiates itself from my Winston Super 10 10’ 3wt (and my old Hanak Superb RS Graphene 10’ 3” 3wt): 1) the Contact II seems to cast single nymph, double nymph and dry dropper rigs better - the flies just are easier to place where you want them - now, this could be related to the extra length as this rod is the longest rod that I have ever owned (I have fished the Contact II 11’ 2’ 3wt for a day, and it also cast nymph rigs beautifully) 2) the tip is more sensitive that any other rods in my quiver - you can feel the fish take - you can feel your flies tick bottom - imprressivley sensitive
@@robertlouis24 Thanks Robert. That's good information. I make all my own flies and have enjoyed the addition of euro nymphing to my fly fishing experience. My nymphs are now arranged in my boxes according to weight. I use an accurate 1g scale. Being able to accurately select the correct weight for depth and river conditions has been a game changer in nymphing. I have to admit however that a long cast with a dry on a traditional rig to a difficult rising trout still has the greatest thrill for me. Cheers.
Cracking trip LG. Thanks for sharing, made my week to see you fish the gooobs!!! ( no fishing, just working atm!!)
Beer koozie? I'll stick with 'stubby holder', thanks.
@@franksaunders6534 Yup - stubby holder…
Good to see you starting to employ single accurate casts instead of multiple false casts - master caster, Peter Hayes, does this a lot (Tom would know him as he is considered one of the greatest fly fishermen and champion casters). Your time spent with Tom was invaluable to your development though for river/stream craft, your choice of rod could be shorter and would perform better.
YOU HAVE TURNED INTO A WEIBER HO............WIGGLING IT ABOUT AND SHARING WITH OTHERS shames on you *slap* money shot 5.10 :)
I purchased a pair of Simms waders, wore them for the first time about 6 weeks after purchase and within 15 minutes both legs were wet. Simms replaced them under warranty but I still had to pay $25 postage to return them to the store where I purchased them. No apology and no reimbursement for the postage, not really acceptable when you are paying a premium like you do for Simms products. Perhaps it’s time to try a cheaper alternative?!
Great video as always! I'm looking forward to you starting to tie flies, then you will truly be Lord Gadget. So much more gear and stuff to buy when you tie flies. But satisfaction of catching a fish on a fly you have tied yourself is amazing Rob.
Beautiful looking stream. You should have a go for the carp with some nymphs Robert!.
Hey Robert. Nice vid. Been bloody tough this season. We need rain basically. Ive only fished about 60hrs in my Skwala carbons and they're definitely more comfortable than the G4Z, but so much lighter that it doesnt surprise youve sprung leaks. Our blackberry/ tea tree/pittospora laden bank veg is really tough on waders. My Orvis Pro's lasted only a few hours - and they were meant to be bullet proof so...
@@mathewcampbell8479 Makes me feel so much better knowing that there is somebody else in Australia that has Skwala Carbons - and is questioning the durability - I am going to see if I can send them back to the US to get them repaired as they are still under warranty - I bought them from The Slide Inn (Kelly Gallop’s shop)… the Simms do seem to be the most robust of the waders that I have - am now trying a pair of Patagonia Swiftcurrrent Expedition Waders (with a Zip) - will keep you posted on how they hold up…
@robertlouis24 My mate had a new pair of the Patagonias. They looked quite good. Toms Outdoors use them for their guiding clients, and swear by them so... I see The FlyFisher now sell the Skwalas in Aus, so maybe speak to them re. warranty. I really think our veg is a lot tougher than average.
Great fishing Rob!! Looked like a beautiful spot, some nice water. Its good fun fishing with a mate!

What a epic session 👏👏👏Should be every flyfishermans mantra….. “remove the carp, remove the carp, remove the carp”…….
A gill net with 100mm mesh would remove stacks of carp. Key is to monitor the net and not leave it unattended.
Great session …. You have been covering some country 👍👍 How do you find the NZ indicator V the Oros ??? Cheers
@@platypusexpeditions5737 I am an immigrant to Australian (arrived in 2006 from the UK) and I do not take what we have in Australia for granted - and, frankly, to catch trout in NSW you have to be willing to drive - NZ strike indicator casts better than the Oros - Oros are better for beginners - and are a bit simpler to use… both have their time and place…
Thanks Rob… well played on your adventures and thanks for your thoughts on the oros.
What a great little place to stay!
@@davidflyfisher6379 Just a superb find, David - and an owner whose family have lived in Tumut for multiple generations - and who knows all of the local farmers - I have never had it so good on a hard to access river (I say hard to access as I often fish in the Snowys National Park where you can walk & fish anywhere - it is not the same on the Goobarragandra River)…
8.30 although its a weber check not a weiber check guys *sigh* and how dare you let someone else handle youre weiber *sob* and i must say what an amazing river and part of the world........have seen the guys pass by while fishing and they are always friendly and respectful. Something tells me you would be hard pressed too find a fault with the guys who run that float business and it really seems a bucket list trip :) great work mate
WATE TEMP IS IMPORTANT ,,,,,HIGHER YOU GO THE COLDER THE WATER , COLDER THE WATER THE MORE HUNGREY THE FISH ,,,,AS THE WATERR RGETS WARMEER TEH FISH WONT FIGHT AS WELL TAKES ARRE SLOWER ALSO IN WARMEER WATER SUMMER DAYS FISH LET LAZEY LESS OFF AFIGHT .,TOM SHOULD KNOW THAT TAKE LAKE FISH FOR EXAMPLE THATS A GOOD EXAMPLE HOWEVER THE BIGGER FISH IN RIVERS ALSO GET LAZY ,AND SLOW DOWN A LOT ...
